or years, city of Joliet officials have pondered a nagging question: What would transform downtown? They would like to revitalize the area and make it the real heart of the city. And they’ve already done a lot to make that happen. First the streetscapes were spruced up. Then shindigs and festivals hit the calendar, including the very popular Race Fan Rally, a one-day event devoted to all things NAsCAR, and the Light up the holidays parade before Christmas. The city even built its own minor league baseball park, silver Cross Field.

Nearly a year’s worth of work on Will County’s open burning ordinance will continue to smolder at least another month. The County Board on Jan. 16 tabled a recommendation from its Public Health and Safety Committee, and sent it back to work out some issues.There also may be another public hearing on any changes before the full board takes up the plan again. For the second consecutive meeting, most Republicans on the board attempted to amend a committee’s recommendation on the floor.
