o’Dekirk elected Joliet’s next mayor Bob O'Dekirk defeats incumbent Tom Giarrante in mayoral race After four years in office, Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante lost his reelection bid April 7 to city councilman Bob O’Dekirk.

More than 1,800 votes separated O’Dekirk from his predecessor, and the former Joliet police officer received about 5,000 more votes than a third candidate, Joliet Junior College Board Chairman Andy

Mihelich.

The margin of victory was the biggest surprise for both O’Dekirk and Giarrante, who said he did not have any bad feelings toward his opponent and looked forward to spending more time with his family.

A former firefighter and president of the Joliet Firefighters Local 44, Giarrante served on the Joliet Park

District Board and 15 years on the Joliet City Council prior to being elected mayor in 2011.

During the campaign, Giarrante stood by his record as mayor, which included overseeing a city budget that was in bad shape at the time of his election to one that had a $35 million to $40 million reserve fund.

The former mayor argued that, because of the budget, the city was able to hire more police officers and address the ash borer tree problem.

Giarrante added that the city had

issued 21,000 building permits during his four years as mayor, compared with 829 in the same time period prior to his taking office.

O’Dekirk argued against Giarrante’s claims that the city was on budget. He said the city took $3 million from reserves to balance the 2014 budget, and $8 million from reserves was included in the 2015 budget. In general, O’Dekirk

argued that the problem in Joliet was the “culture” at city hall.

Some of the changes O’Dekirk called for were to hire an economic development director and create an economic development plan to lead the city forward and actively market Joliet.

“Overall, I think people all over were looking for change,” the newly elected mayor said following his victory.

plans for new courthouse advance

In 2015, plans for a new Will County courthouse and judicial center moved forward, with the Will County Board choosing downtown Joliet as the site of the complex.

Architecture firm Wight & Company presented concept plans to the county board in November for the proposed judicial complex. The plans included a new 10-story county courthouse in downtown Joliet at the intersection Ottawa and Jefferson streets to replace the current facility, which city and county officials had

criticized for being outdated and unable to meet the needs of the county’s growing population.

Plans also include the construction of an adjacent four-story office building that would house the court clerk, state’s attorney, public defender and probation departments.

The new courthouse and judicial complex would contain between 30 and 36 courtrooms, while a satellite courthouse in the northern portion of the county would house several more.

County residents bid farewell to ride the rock The Forest Preserve District of Will County had to make tough budgetary decisions in 2015, with popular annual events such as Ride the Rock and Howloween Hoopla getting cut from the 2016 spending plan.

During a February meeting, forest preserve staff explained that the district can no longer afford such large-scale events because of planned employee retirements during the next few years, as well as a lean, no-frills budget approved by commissioners last fall to address a projected $400,000 loss of revenue in 2015 and beyond.

They recommended eliminating Ride the Rock, as well as other events, in 2016.

On May 16, more than 1,000 riders turned out for the ninth and, perhaps, final running of the annual bike ride and festival.

Despite its popularity, Ride the Rock costs the forest preserve more than it brings in.

John Gerl, director of administration and finance, told the forest preserve district’s operations committee in March that the event raises $18,000 in sponsorships but costs $60,000.

JJC recognized as part of Community Colleges Act Joliet Junior College and surrounding communities came together Aug. 12 to honor the 50th anniversary of the Illinois Community Colleges Act. The Joliet institution was the nation’s first community college and helped pave the way for other post-secondary opportunities.

Gov. Bruce Rauner issued a proclamation naming July 15, 2015, through July 15, 2016, “The year Of the Community College.”

The proclamation designated the state’s commemoration of the milestone through events, conferences and other initiatives, while the 50th anniversary celebration was designed to

recognize the successes of community colleges.

“It’s no accident that these institutions are known as ‘community colleges,’” Sen. Pat McGuire said during the August celebration at Joliet Junior College, adding that individuals earning degrees at these institutions strengthen the community and the nation.

During the celebration, Joliet Junior College President Debra Daniels said JJC was honored to kick off the 50th anniversary observance of the Illinois Public Community College Act, which was signed into law July 15, 1965.

remembering the deadly 1990 tornado On Aug. 28, 1990, an F5 tornado tore through three communities in the area, causing $135 million in damage, killing 29 people, injuring more than 300, and destroying many homes and buildings.

Joliet, Plainfield and Crest Hill remembered the 25th anniversary of that deadly storm throughout summer 2015, culminating with a commemoration ceremony Aug. 28 at the former site of Plainfield High School. Local leaders attended the ceremony, including Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, Will County Executive Larry Walsh and

Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman.

At 3:30 p.m., the approximate time the tornado hit, the names of each of the victims were read.

In addition to the commemoration ceremony, the Joliet Area Historical Museum held a special exhibit on the tornado and its impact on the history of Will County. Titled “Eight Minutes in August,” the exhibit ran from August through November. Much of the growth in the area has been attributed to efforts to rebuild after the tornado, as well as the media attention it received.

Job Corps donates canned goods through ‘Food Feud’ Event collected 865 items for Forest Park food pantry It was a fight, but it was for a good cause.

From Nov. 16 to Dec. 14, the staff at the Joliet Job Corps Center competed to see which department could collect the most nonperishable food for the food pantry at Joliet’s Forest Park Community Center, 1017 Woodruff Road.

Here’s how it worked: the employees from the Center Director,

Finance and Administration, Education and Training and Social Development departments bought food and brought it to the Center.

The cans, boxes and bags were counted each week, and each department was awarded first, second, third or fourth place for that time period.

It was an effective way to gather a donation, said Center Director Christine Sanchez.

“Our staff are very giving to our students every day. This was a good way to have a healthy competition between departments and give back to the community,” she said.

At the end of the event, a total of 865 items had been collected, and the Center Director department had won.

The winning wasn’t the important thing, of course. Helping the needy in the Center’s community was the real goal of the Food Feud.

On Dec. 16, Joliet Job Corps Center students Deon Washington, James Tucker and Erik Morales loaded a van with all of the food and took it to the pantry.

Bettye Gavin, director of the Forest Park Community Center, said the donation really would help the pantry’s clients.

“The Forest Park Community Center’s food pantry was established to help eradicate hunger in our area. We have the opportunity to service about 550-560 families per month, and we distribute canned food on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,” Gavin said. “We are serving thousands of people.”

And she thanked the three students for the work they did loading and unloading the food.

“I give them my highest praise for their efforts and community service,” Gavin said. “We appreciate the Joliet Job Corps Center and look forward to a continuing partnership.”

Will County Electoral Board removed two from March 15 ballot The Will County Electoral Board convened Dec. 18 at the Will County Courthouse to read its decisions on objections filed to the nominating petitions for the March 15 general primary.

In regards to the objection filed by Derrick Barry to the nomination petition of Barbara Guerrero, who is running as a Democratic candidate for Will County Circuit Clerk, the electoral board ordered the Will County Clerk to reject Guerrero’s nomination papers and not print her name on the March 15 ballot.

In regards to the objection filed by Richard Gougis, III to the nomination petition of Sinatra Strong, who is running as a Democratic candidate for County Board Member District 3, the electoral board ordered the Will County Clerk to reject Strong’s nomination papers and to not print Strong’s name on the March 15 ballot.

The Will County Electoral Board consisted of County Clerk Chief Deputy Judith Wiedmeyer, Circuit Clerk Pamela McGuire and Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe.

“The field of patient safety is full of stories about amazing interventions that can save patients’ lives but do not end up getting widely adopted,” he explained.

“Why?” I asked.

“It really isn’t anyone’s priority except maybe the patient’s,” Jha said. “How many times have you heard stories about hospital CEOs getting fired because of the hospital’s infection rates? I haven’t.”

He added there’s also no evidence that high infection rates or high mortality rates have any effect on CEO salaries.

So what does affect hospital CEO salaries? Is it all those advertising dollars that bring in gobs of new patients and brand recognition? I have no evidence one way or other, but I do know I’ve interviewed enough families whose relatives suffered harm in a hospital to know that someone should be paying closer attention to preventing preventable infections.

The government’s list opens a window into the world of hospital safety. If the public looks through that window, takes notice of the penalties and asks what their local hospitals are doing to correct their deficiencies, that’s a start at cleaning up the problem. Voyager Media looks back on the year’s memorable moments

The year was filled with several top stories, some happy, some sad, all memorable.

He are the Joliet Bugle’s top stories of 2015.

PASSING OF A LEGEND Fifty-nine-year coaching icon Gordie Gillespie, died Feb. 28 at his Joliet residence at the age of 88.

Gillespie, who spent 25 years with the University of St. Francis, was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas in July, 2009.

Gillespie posted an overall baseball record of 1,893-952-2.

With St. Francis, Gillespie was 1,020-581-2 in his years on the bench. He spent 10 years at Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he was 239-130. His college coaching career began at Lewis University, where he was 634-241 in 24 years.

Gillespie was not only a baseball coach, nor has he stayed at the college level.

He had a 222-54-6 record in 27 years as coach of Joliet Catholic High School, where he won Class 4A titles in 1975-’78 and the Class 5A title in 1981.

Gillespie also coached USF football for eight years, netting a 48-33-0 record.

He coached Lewis’ mens

basketball team for 15 years, putting up a 228-124 record.

He also coached women’s basketball at USF for one year, posting an 11-7 mark.

Overall, Gillespie has a coached a total of 3,453 games, with a 2,402-1,170-8 record, a win percentage of .672.

He won four championships in college, three at Lewis and one with the Saints.

The death of Gillespie brought many stories of his style and dedication to the many sports he coached.

No matter who you talk to or what sport they played one general theme existed – Gillespie cared more for the athlete than the victory.

That philosophy, however, turned into more than 2,000 wins in his illustrious career.

“He would make you feel good,” said Roger Hewlett, a linebacker on Gillespie’s first state championship team at Joliet Catholic. “He was a great motivator. That was why we were so good. You never had to try and get yourself ready to play, you just had to listen to him for five minutes before the game. He brought out the best in you.”

In the state final meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria, they achieved it – and then some.

The Indians didn’t just get a state trophy, they got the top state trophy as they scored 132 points to win the Class 3A state championship.

Ashley Tutt led the way, placing fourth overall in 16 minutes, 36 seconds.

Emily Shelton was the second through the chute for Minooka, finishing 19th in 16:59, while Mackenzie Callahan was also AllState, playing 20th in 17:03.

Also scoring for Minooka were Morgan Crouch (60th, 17:47) and Vivian Van Eck (66th, 17:51).

Emily Ellis (175th, 18:52) and Katelyn Gall (188th, 19:00) also competed, but did not score.

HOLMES DRAFTED Richaun Holmes came into Lockport High School in 2007 as a 5-foot, 9-inch, undersized forward.

He is now a more than a foot taller, much stronger and a Philadelphia 76er.

He was selected in the second round, 37th overall, of the NBA

draft.

Holmes is the second Porter drafted into the NBA, following Alando Tucker, who was drafted 29th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2007.

Holmes joins Jahlil Okafor from Chicago’s Whitney Young (No.3 overall selection) in Philly and follows Okafor and Frank Kaminsky III (No. 9/Hornets) as Illinois natives selected in the top 40 picks.

Holmes is the second Porter drafted into the NBA, following Alando Tucker, who was drafted 29th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2007 He is the 10th player from Bowling Green to be drafted in the NBA and the first since Antonio Daniels was the fourth overall selection by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the 1997 draft. Upon his debut, Holmes will become the 15th Falcon to play in the NBA. In his final college season, the 6-foot, 10-inch Holmes was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection and paced the Falcons in scoring (14.7 points), rebounding (8.0 rebounds), and blocked shots (83), and was named the MAC’s defensive player of the year.

Despite playing just three seasons at Bowling Green, Holmes

is the school’s all-time blocked shot leader with 244, and also ranks 11th in career rebounds (652) and 35th in points (1,089).

FIRST FAMILY It took six years, but the first family of Lockport wrestling crowned its latest champion.

That happened at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament in the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Junior Shayne Oster became the third member of the family to claim a state title, as he defeated Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy 5-4 at 138 pounds.

Shayne joins brothers Jake (2004) and Jameson (2009) as state champions. Brother Josh is the current head coach of the Porters.

A week later, the Porters claimed the school’s first dual wrestling trophy in school history, placing fourth in the team state meet.

STATE CHAMPS Lockport entered the second day of the state tournament at Cherry Bowl sitting in fourth place, behind three of the top teams in the state, 169 pins out of the lead.

By the end of the morning Saturday, the Porters were in first place.

One game later, it was theirs to lose. Instead, they held on to their lead tightly, winning their second state title in six years with a staterecord total of 12,689.

It was a Saturday for the ages for Lockport, who had an incredible total of 6,548, far and away a state tournament record. Their morning of 3,343 was also a threegame state record.

The day started off great as the Porters shot a 1,105 to vault to second as freshman Bailey Delrose rolled her first 300.

Individually, Kierstin Vandenburg finished second in the state with a 2,663 12-game total.

VOLLEYBALL Joliet West, the No. 3 seed in the Minooka Regional, came back time after time on No. 5 Plainfield Central and in the end came away victorious, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 on May 27 to win its first regional title in program history.

It was Lauren Stefanski who stepped to the service line in game two with West trailing 19-12 and momentum clearly in Central’s favor and served four straight aces, five points total, to get the Tigers back in the match.

“It was so much pressure and I wanted it so bad,” she said of the serve. “I really wanted to get those aces and get those points and get us back in the game. We had to dig deep and claw our way out.”

Stefanski, who posted five aces and eight kills on the night, served the final two match points to give West the win.

It was the 30th win of the season for the Tigers, who were 3-27 in 2010, the first season after the split of the Joliet athletic programs.

Minooka also won a regional title this season and then defeated Joliet West in the sectional semifinal.

The top performance came from Joliet Catholic Academy

girls, when for the second time in two years, the Angels team ended the season in the Class 3A state championship game.

For the second time, the Angels placed second.

JCA fell 25-16, 18-25, 12-25 to Marian Central at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.

The Angels reached the championship match after defeating LaSalle-Peru 25-21, 2527, 25-13.

duo tAkeS SiXth During the tennis season last year, Joliet senior Tom Carney decided to abandon his singles play, which he had qualified for state in three consecutive seasons, and team with freshman Morgan Red and play doubles.

The move paid off as the tandem went 7-2 over the weekend and placed sixth in the state.

It was the first tennis medal for Joliet since Mickey Chaudhuri took seventh in singles in 1988 and the highest a doubles team has placed since Howard Sprague and Robert Hoffer won the state title in 1932.

Carney and Red opened the tournament with two wins, defeating Tyler Busell and Ryan Holt of Plainfield North 6-0, 6-0 and Springfield’s Bailey Gill and Moshe Latif 6-2, 6-3 before their first loss, which was a 6-7 (9), 6-2, 7-6 (4) loss to David Aizenberg and Max Gordon of Highland Park.

After that loss, Carney and Red went on a six-match winning streak that propelled them into the fifth-place match.

It started with a 6-7 (6), 6-3, [105] win over Loyola’s Patrick Browne and Jack Nichols and continued with Michael Gasick and Julian Janczak of Libertyville (6-1, 6-3), Lawrence Hiquiana and Zach Wood of Downers Grove South (36, 6-2, (10-8) ), Matthew Harvey and Adam Maryniuk of Stevenson (6-4, 6-0), Zach Elliott and Nick Calzolano of Hinsdale Central (60, 7-5) and Greg Frauenheim and Jordon O’Kelly of Lake Forest (7-5, 6-2).

In the fifth-place match, Carney and Red were defeated for the second time, falling 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (6) to Lope Adelakun and Michael Czlonka of Hinsdale Central.

Keep holidays with difficult family simple and on the surface If family members ask for help, maybe you could insert some gentle wisdom Dear Dave, I haven’t spoken to my mom and sister in more than six months.

Over time, I realized we have a real clash of Dave Says moral values money advice by dave ramsey that has led to arguments and hard feelings. Lately, with it being Christmas season and a new year just around the corner, I’ve found myself wanting to navigate things a little better and stop avoiding them.

It’s been mostly just between myself and them, so my wife and kids are pretty insulated from the ugliness.

Do you have any advice for handling situations such as these?

Dave Dear Dave, Well, the good news is it doesn’t sound like you’ve had to spend a lot of time with them. So their influence over you and your household has been minimal. Still, things like this are painful. These are people you love, even if they are hard to get along with or understand.

I’m not a family counselor, but my initial advice would be don’t try to change them. And don’t take discussions too deep. If you get together, just keep things simple and on the surface. To the extent they try to invade your family, that’s where you have to put up a good

solid boundary. You have to protect your family and try your best to keep bad influences at a distance.

But I don’t think you’re going to fix them. Probably the best thing you can do is model sanity and reason in front of them.

A friend of mine who has some crazy in-laws says he adopts the bobblehead deal. He just sits there like a bobblehead and smiles and nods, no matter what craziness is swirling around. And that’s not a bad idea when you think about it.

You don’t want things getting ugly if you can help it, plus the chances of you changing a lifetime of toxic behaviors in one brief interaction are very small.

Pray for them, too, Dave. Then, if they ask for help, maybe you could insert some gentle wisdom.

Don’t tell them what they’re doing is wrong or that they’re bad people.

Just describe things you and your family have done and how you’ve handled similar situations. But until they bring it up, I wouldn’t go there.

Jeremy Dear Jeremy, It sounds to me like this is the kind of idea that would require more in the way of brain sweat and time than money. I would just think of it as a part-time side job and go for it. However, make sure you have a clear understanding of exactly how much — if any — financial support would be required. Set these financial boundaries, and also be clear on when you expect the business to make money.

One thing I would warn against is ending up in a partnership if this thing becomes a success.

Partnerships are bad news in the business world, so I’d advise you to figure out a way to structure things where you each own different parts — something more along the lines of a joint venture.

But in terms of doing some side deals, creating some cool new apps, and making money in the process?

Absolutely, I would do that. Just figure out an intelligent way to structure the business and finances so you don’t get pinched!

Joliet Slammers make donation to medical alert program Lifeline said medical alert services help millions of seniors maintain quality of life The Joliet Slammers recently donated $5,000 to the Silver Cross Foundation to be used for the Lifeline Medical Alert Program - a medical alert service for people 65 and older.

“We appreciate the Joliet Slammers generous donation that will help fund the Lifeline Medical

Alert Program, ensuring the safety of so many people living within the surrounding communities,” said Larry Johnson, vice president of the Silver Cross Foundation.

Lifeline said its medical alert services help millions of seniors maintain their quality of life and independence by providing them

a way to connect with emergency services or a loved one at any time.

Users wear a small device that contains a “personal help button.”

If an emergency occurs, the person wearing the device can simply push the button to be connected with a Lifeline representative.

Representatives -- available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year -- will immediately respond to the user and connect them with emergency services, a family member or friend, depending on the situation.

“The Slammers baseball organization is thrilled to assist Silver Cross Hospital in giving area residents peace of mind by helping set-up the Lifeline program in their own homes,” Slammers General Manager Chris Franklin said.

Individuals interested in becoming a volunteer for the Lifeline Program at Silver Cross Hospital or those in need of Lifeline services can call the volunteer services office at 815-300-7630.
