Engineering students help create 3D-printed hand for child in need Students have 3D-printed and assembled a test hand The Joliet Central High School Engineering Team has teamed up with the Enable Community Foundation to create a 3D-printed prosthetic hand for a child in need.

“The Joliet Central Engineering Team is a newly founded studentdriven group who began meeting after school during open lab times to work on the creation and assembly of the hand,” said teacher and sponsor, Dale West.

Construction of the hand is coming along nicely. The students have 3D-printed and assembled a test hand to demonstrate their mastery of the process.

“The project is turning into one that I had never imagined.

The feedback and response from students wanting to get involved was overwhelming,” says West. “I really like how the students are applying their strengths to the project. It is really cool to see what this is quickly turning into and the best part is that it is all student driven. I am looking forward to seeing where this project takes us.”

Once assembly of the hand is completed the team will send the hand to Enable Community Foundation for approval to be matched.

Students have also formed a media team for the Engineering Team, which maintains the team’s social media presence and documents updates of the project along with pictures and videos of the hand.

Women Who Care donate $2,300 to dog rescue AHBDR has dogs that are heartworm positive, which is expensive to treat Members of 100+ Women Who Care of Will County presented All Herding Breed Dog Rescue of Joilet with a $2,300 check Dec. 12, the third such donation since the group formed earlier this year.

All Herding Breed Dog Rescue is an advocate against animal suffering, abuse and neglect, according to WWC. The mission of AHBDR is to rescue dogs from highkill shelters, return them to good health and find them new homes.

“AHBDR is incredibly grateful for this gift and thank 100+ WWC of Will County,” said Lois Carberry, director of All Hearding. “This donation will go to help dogs who need severe medical attention.”

Carberry said AHBDR has dogs that are heartworm positive, which is expensive to treat. She said the dogs receive medication and the loving care they need to recover and be adopted.

“Thank you again to the 100+ WWC members who chose to support AHBDR,” Carberry added.

100+ WWC is a philanthropic group formed for local women who are interested in supporting their communities by contributing to group donations to Will County charities.

The Holly Club recently hosted its annual Holly Club Ball, which serves as the group’s holiday fundraiser.

The local community service group started in 1889, and is the Joliet area’s oldest community service organization, according to the club’s publicity chair, Helen Karakoudas Redfern. The club is run completely by volunteers.

In 1889, the women first called themselves the Young Maidens’ Christmas Association, but they worried about confusion with YMCA and changed the name to the Holly Club.

This year’s Holly Club Ball, held Dec. 12, was the 126th and serves

as the group’s biggest fundraiser.

“The ball went very well,” Redfern said. “We had more reservations and donations than last year.”

She added that the milder weather helped.

According to the club’s handbook, its mission is that it “answers calls for help from growing numbers of people who are not poor enough to qualify for government aid, yet whose limited income makes providing basic necessities for their family a real and continuing challenge.”

Holly Club celebrated a milestone this year; it was the 25th year that they founded a psychosocial services program.

The program was founded in late 1990 after a tornado that killed several people hit Plainfield, Joliet and Crest Hill that summer.

“This program was organized by our members to help first responders who had been traumatized in their work with tornado victims and survivors,” said Redfern.

Area Muslims condemn ISIS Association of Pakistani Americans’ president speaks out against ‘un-Islamic ideology’

As terror attacks by groups like the Islamic State in Syria and Al Qaeda continue to stun the world, American Muslims are gathering to promote peace and to help educate their communities about their opposition to these types of extremist groups.

Hours after the Paris attacks, the Association of Pakistani Americans in Bolingbrook sent a statement to the ambassador of Paris and local officials condemning the act.

“We are equally saddened and shaken by the attacks of this terror

group,” the statement read. “This kind of inhumane act has no place in any society. These individuals carried out their own agenda using Islam which is against the teaching of Islam.”

In a time when a new Gallup poll taken Dec. 8 noted that 2 in 3 people think acts of terror in the U.S. are likely, The Muslim community in Bolingbrook is making efforts to reassure residents that radical Islam does not represent the more than 1,000 Muslims living in the area.

Talat Rashid, president of the APA, described ISIS as a terrorist organization that grew after the Iraq invasion and flourished in Syria.

“It is a cult, which has nothing

to do with Islam,” Rashid told the Bugle. “It is dividing Muslims for their own benefits. It also seeks to divide the entire society to gain their ill intentions. It has killed thousands of Muslims since its inception.”

ISIS, according to Rashid, does not represent Islam or Muslims in any way. Similar to other religions, he said Islam teaches peace.

“We Muslims condemn their un-Islamic ideology, and do not condone their actions because ISIS is not one of us.”

He explained that whenever incidents of this magnitude happens, regardless of who carried it out, he believes no religions advocate killing innocent people.

“We are very fortunate that so far nothing has happened in Bolingbrook,” Rashid said. “But you never know, because backlash is a result of public emotions and immediate reaction. People listen and read news and make biased judgments immediately without looking into the real matter, especially when a Muslim name is involved. People question why these groups are defaming Islam and its real flower. “[American Muslims] all try to disassociate themselves with [terrorists] and tell them, this is not us, this is not Islam. As always, we pray that this does not happen

again.”

Last year, the threat of ISIS did hit close to home. A Bolingbrook man was arrested after attempting to leave the country to join ISIS in Syria.

“It was very shocking to all of us and no one expected that this would hit our home in Bolingbrook, where the Muslim community is proactive and living the American dream,” said Rashid. “It was a very scary and unbelievable event that shook everyone not only in Bolingbrook but the entire U.S. This young man did not go to any of our Islamic schools in Bolingbrook. He was recruited from the Internet, which is the tool that is being used by ISIS.”

American Values Luckily, Rashid said that Muslims in Bolingbrook, with two mosques and one Islamic school, Furqan Academy, have been very well supported by the village.

“Bolingbrook is a very diverse city and Muslims are proud to be a part of this fabric,” said Rashid. “The city not only encourages religious practices but also helps facilitate these religious practices. In the past 25 years there has not been a single incident in my knowledge where any Muslim was discriminated against based on their ethnic and religious practices.”

Rashid said it is incumbent upon American Muslims to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to ISIS to law enforcement authorities immediately.

“ISIS is targeting youth and luring them in to their so called un-Islamic and evil beliefs which has nothing to do with Islam and Islamic values. At the same time it is the responsibility of parents as well to monitor their kids. Watch for changed behavior

and keep an eye on the circle of their friends so that incidents like this do not happen again,” said Rashid.

The Gallup poll cited earlier also indicated that the trust in government to protect against terrorism is at a new low of 55 percent, that is 33 points lower than 2001, shortly after 9/11, when 88 percent of Americans said they had a great deal or fair amount of confidence.

Adding to the fire are comments like that of presidential candidate Donald Trump who has been calling for an extreme crackdown on U.S. Muslims.

“A presidential candidate should not be making comments like this,” said Rashid. “His comments not only outraged Muslims, but every other ethnic community, including other Republican and Democratic candidates. Muslims also want to see this country a safe place to live.

The reason people want to come to the U.S. is because of American values such as religious freedom and justice, according to Rashid. He said that Trump’s comments about Muslims are very un-American.

“He cannot hold the entire Muslim community responsible for the act of a few evil and sick people who are carrying out these acts of violence which has no place in Islam,“ Rashid said.

He added, however, that Trump is getting a lot of attention because he is speaking on behalf of average Americans who may think that Muslim are terrorists, even though it is not based on fact.

“We Muslims have to do a better job defending religion and disassociation of ourselves from ISIS and the groups like them who are defaming Islam, a peaceful religion,” Rashid said.

Richland School District 88A announced Thursday that the refunding of the Series 2005A Bonds was finalized Dec. 4.

The refund generated $172,182.00 of debt service savings, compared with the refunded debt service.

The district said a bulk of that savings will come in 2023 because it refunded the remaining single maturity in 2023.

District 88A said the new interest

rate is 2.89 percent, compared with the prior rate of 5.25 percent.

Government Finance Officers Association standards for pursuing a refunding for savings suggest targeting a minimum of 3 percent on percent value savings.

This refunding generated 14.56 percent savings for the Richland property taxpayers, according to District 88A, which was in excess of the GFOA target. The present

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic wins Innovation Award Care coordination program recognized When the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic implemented its care coordination program, the goal was to improve patient outcomes.

Now, WGMC is implementing disease care management plans for all of its chronically ill patients.

On Dec. 7, the Illinois Association of Free & Charitable Clinics recognized WGMC’s care coordination program by presenting the clinic with its Innovation Award. The Innovation Award, presented during IAFCC’s fifth annual conference at Starved

Rock State Park, recognizes innovative approaches to patient care that result in measurable improvements to patient health and well-being.

As part of WGMC’s care coordination program, all patients are offered ancillary services such as nutrition counseling and education, fitness classes and mental health counseling. Through a partnership with Midwestern University and Roosevelt University, fourth-year pharmacy students also provide medication

teach back and management counseling to clinic patients.

Overall, WGMC said the care coordination program produces quantifiable improvements in patient health and reduces the clinic’s costs, while also providing hands-on experiences for students.

According to WGMC’s website, the not-for-profit organization provides free medical and dental care to adults who have no health insurance or medical care entitlements and meet prescribed income guidelines.

Courthouse design unveiled to county board $225 million financing plan to be discussed next month

Architecture firm Wight & Company recently presented concept plans to the Will County Board for a proposed judicial complex that includes a new 10-story county courthouse in downtown Joliet.

The new courthouse would be built at the intersection Ottawa and Jefferson streets and replace the current facility, which county officials say is outdated and unable to meet the needs of a growing population.

Plans include the construction of an adjacent four-story office building that would house the court clerk, state’s attorney, public defender and probation departments.

When the current courthouse was built in 1969, the population of Will County was around 250,000.

There are now 700,000 residents in the area and that number is projected to increase to 1.2 million over the next 30 years, according to the county officials.

The current courthouse, located at 14 Jefferson St., contains 23 courtrooms, but board members say it lacks adequate space and

Will County currently has 35 judges, with one vacancy, who handle 80,000 cases each year.

The new courthouse and judicial complex would contain between 30 and 36 courtrooms, while a satellite courthouse in the northern portion of the county would house several more.

“As a local attorney and frequent user of the courthouse, I see firsthand the importance of getting these projects underway and completed as soon as possible,” board member Ragan Freitag,

R-Wilmington, said in a news release issued by the county board.

Freitag, who chairs the capital improvements committee, added that the proposed construction of a new sheriff’s office and health department building are equally important.

“All of these projects are crucial in addressing our long-term capital needs,” Freitag said. “The Sheriff’s Office and Health Department are both overdue for new facilities that can meet the public safety needs of our county.”

The county’s long range building plan calls for construction of not only a new courthouse,

but a sheriff’s office and health department building, as well.

Construction on a new sheriff’s office building would begin in 2016 and end in 2017, according to the board. Plans for the Sheriff’s Laraway Road campus include new evidence storage and training buildings, as well as a new administration building to house the coroner’s office, emergency management service and other public safety offices.

The proposed health department building would be the last project on the building plan, which the county board expects to be completed by 2022.

“The board is going to move forward with a long range building plan to make the county more efficient and adequately meet the demands for our ever growing population,” County Board Speaker Jim Moustis said in a recent statement. “These are very important public safety needs, and along with continuing to improve and upgrade our roads, a necessary investment in our future.”

During the Dec. 10 executive

committee meeting, board members also discussed a $225 million financing plan to fund the various construction projects.

Mike Fricilone, who chairs the county board’s finance committee, outlined eight different revenue streams identified by the county to fund the project. These revenue options include courthouse and user fees, existing property and sales taxes, bonding rebates, special funds and contributions from the city of Joliet.

“This is a fiscally responsible plan that doesn’t raise taxes, uses existing revenues and only borrows what is necessary,” Fricilone said.

“I look forward to seeing ground broken next year and building a Will County for the future.”

In a press release from the Will County Board, officials added that the financing plan also allocates “significant revenues” to road projects.

The board is expected to continue discussions on the plan at the Jan. 14 committee of the whole meeting.

Officials said a plan could be approved as soon as next month.

Christmas carols and holiday television specials and stories are filled with traditions that may be lost on us in the 21st Century. Where did these customs, traditions and legends come from?

If you’ve heard of frankincense and myrrh, it’s probably thanks to the biblical account of the birth of Jesus.

The book of Matthew says Magi, or wise men, followed a bright eastern star to Bethlehem, the place where Christians believe Jesus was born. There, these wise men saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the child.

We all know what gold is, but what are frankincense and myrrh? Both frankincense and myrrh are derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees, respectively, after their bark has been cut. The leaking resin is allowed to harden and is scraped off the trunk in tear-shaped droplets; it may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils.

These items were considered extremely valuable in the ancient world and standard gifts for a king or deity. Gold is a valuable precious metal, frankincense was used as perfume or incense, and myrrh was used as anointing oil. Other accounts from the ancient world that detail these items being presented as gifts include King Seleucus II Callinicus offering to the god Apollo at the temple in Miletus. Another tradition during Christmas is to hang mistletoe in one’s house.

Mistletoe is a plant that grows on willow and apple trees, and the tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient druids.

According to mythology, mistletoe possesses mystical powers that bring good luck to households where it is hung and wards off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology. Interestingly, some of the first Christians who came to Western Europe tried to ban the use of mistletoe in churches. However, many Christians continue to hang the plant to this day.

Christmas carols are an important part of the holiday. A favorite of carolers this time of year is “The First Noel,” but what does “noel” mean? In French, joyeux noel means “Merry Christmas.” Our modern English word comes from the Middle English nowel, which Webster’s Dictionary defines as “a shout of joy or Christmas song.”

The roots of the word are the French noel “Christmas season,” which may come from the Old French nael, which in turn, is derived from the Latin natalis, meaning “birth.” Since Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, it was natural for people to refer to the celebration as the “nativity” or the “birth.”

Another possible root for noel, also from the French, is the word nouvelles, meaning “news.” As the popular carol says, “The first noel the angels did say / Was to certain poor shepherds. . . .”

The meaning of “news” certainly makes sense in that context. However, the early usage and definition of noel seem to focus more on the idea of birth and that is probably the more accurate meaning.

state’s top tourney Porters, Tigers again playing in Pontiac Holiday Tournament

In what is widely considered the top tournament of all the holiday tournaments, severalVoyager Media teams will square off with some of the state’s best at the 85th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

Peoria Manual is the No.1 seed in the tournament and the No. 4 team in the state of Illinois according to ChicagoHoops.com. The No. 2 seed goes to Curie, the No. 5 team in Illinois, while Simeon is the third seed and No. 3 team in Illinois.

Curie comes out of the Public League Red-Central and opened the season 4-0 and Simeon is 2-1 in the CPL Red-South after a loss to Morgan Park.

Simeon will feature the likes of Evan Gilyard, Josh Thomas, Zach Norvell and 6-foot, 7-inch Ben Coupet.

Benet, 7-0 out of the East Suburban Catholic Conference, earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament after opening the season with seven straight wins.

“We are looking forward to playing in one of the best tournaments in the state,” said coach Gene Heidkamp.

“Pontiac in the first round will is a tough match-up. They have a good team, and I am sure it will be a great environment for a game. We are going to have to play very well to advance.”

Win or lose, Benet will face either Joliet West or Plainfield North. The winners would play at 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 29, while the losers play at 6 p.m.

Plainfield North (3-4) features senior Kevin Krieger, one of the top players in the Joliet area.

“We’re going to try and go out there and win it,” Krieger said. “It will be a little different this year but I think we have a shot if we play

JCA to take part in Romeoville tournament Tournament format changes to merge small and large schools in one bracket

This year’s Romeoville Christmas Classic will have a new look.

After having separate big and small school brackets with the two divisions meeting in the final round, this year there is just one bracket with the different school sizes mixed in.

Defending champion Downers Grove North returns this year to lead the field.

It has been a slow start this year for the Trojans as they are just 2-5 and have yet to win a WSC Silver game. However, they used the tournament last year to springboard into a strong second half of the season.

Defending tournament MVP Devin Blake returns to lead the Trojans.

“We are looking forward to playing a four-game tournament format,” Downers North coach James Thomas said. “Being able to complete against a field of teams

and get a variety of styles of play allows for your team to improve heading into the new year.”

They open the tournament Saturday, Dec. 26 at 6:30 p.m. against Lincoln-Way East (3-4).

A win would put them in the 8 p.m. game Dec. 28 against the winner of Chicago Christian (7-1) and Lemont (4-3), which features recruit PJ Pipes. The losing schools will play at 1:30 p.m. that day.

The other half of the bottom bracket features the host school, Romeoville. It opens play in the nightcap on the first day at 8 p.m. against Oak Forest (4-3).

The Spartans (3-4) feature several underclassmen on their roster, but are led by senior Matt Cappelletti.

“We open up the RHS Classic against Oak Forest, which is well coached in has played in the championship game at RHS the past two years,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “We just want to continue developing our youth and playing four solid quarters of basketball each night.

We are emphasizing closing out games better in the fourth and that starts with attention to detail defensively.”

The winner of that game plays at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 against the winner of Glenbard South (4-3) and Phillips (1-2). The losers of the game will face off at noon.

The bottom bracket winners will face off at 8 p.m. Dec. 29, while the consolation winners face off at noon.

On the other half of the bracket are two more Voyager Media teams.

Plainfield Central (0-8) faces off with Reavis (4-3) at 9 a.m. Dec. 26 to open the tournament.

The Wildcats feature several senior leaders in Justin Windt, Chris Bowitz and Scott Gustafson.

“The Romeoville Christmas Tournament provides a quality atmosphere in a very competitive setting,” Central coach Steve Lamberti said. “Every team in the tournament feels like they can win it. We are going up against at solid Reavis team that will force us to be at our best. As always in a tournament situation, we are looking to play our best basketball and put ourselves in a position to win four games.”

In the other game, Joliet Catholic (4-2) takes on Shepard (1-6) at 5 p.m. JCA is anchored by Jalen Jackson and Harold Davis.

Hoyer to headline Saints’ Brown and Gold Banquet Tickets on sale now to see Cubs’ General Manager at Jan. 28 event Jed Hoyer, Chicago Cubs executive vice president and general manager, will be the featured speaker at University of St. Francis’ 39th annual Brown & Gold Night to be held Thursday, January 28 at the Pat Sullivan Center in Joliet.

Hoyer has served as the Cubs executive VP and general manager since November 2011, working closely with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.

Hoyer and Epstein spent eight years together (2002-09) with the Boston Red Sox, helping guide the club to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.

In 2015, the Cubs advanced to the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2003 with a 9765 regular season record – thirdbest in Major League Baseball.

Among the many roster moves in an eventful 2014-15 offseason, the Cubs hired Joe Maddon as manager, signed free agent pitchers Jon Lester and Jason Hammel, and acquired catcher Miguel Montero.

During Hoyer’s tenure with the Cubs, the organization acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo

via trade and selected infielder Kris Bryant and catcher Kyle Schwarber in the June amateur drafts. The Cubs were ranked as having the best farm system in baseball heading into the 2015 season by ESPN.com, Baseball America, The Sporting News, Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs.

Hoyer spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons as executive vice president and general manager of the San Diego Padres. In 2010, the club posted the fourth 90-win campaign in the franchise’s 42year history. At 90-72, the Padres finished 18 games over .500 despite having the lowest payroll in baseball.

During his tenure with the Red Sox, Hoyer was actively involved in player development, major league scouting, quantitative analysis and advance scouting.

In 2005, he served as Boston’s cogeneral manager during a 44-day stint while Epstein briefly left the organization. During that span, he helped to complete the trade for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell that sent Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez and two other minor leaguers to the Marlins in a seven-

player deal. Beckett and Lowell were named American League Championship Series MVP and World Series MVP, respectively, in 2007, with Beckett also finishing second in the American League Cy Young award voting that season.

Hoyer joins an impressive list of Chicago professional sports personalities to have served as the featured speaker at the Brown & Gold event. That list includes Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster (2014), Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox (2013), Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX quarterback Jim McMahon (2012), Denis Savard of the Chicago Blackhawks (2011), Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs (2008), and Chicago Bears’ Mike Ditka (1982, 2007) and Dick Butkus (1980).

New name, same challenges for Central Rich South tournament goes back to being called the Big Dipper, has strong field

The name may have changed back to the Big Dipper Tournament, but the Rich South holiday basketball tournament is just as loaded as in years past.

The Raiders come in with a talented, yet inexperienced team looking to find chemistry this season.

“We are simply looking to get better each game,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost. “Butler College Prep is a well-coached team that

presents some challenges for us and as always, the Dipper field is one of the best in the state.”

Bolingbrook (2-3) is led by senior returners Devon Sams and Zach Grady, as well as junior Nana Akenten.

Butler is a member of the Noble Athletic Conference.

A win on the opening game would place the Raiders in a matchup with the winner of Lincoln-Way Central (5-1) and Hales Franciscan (3-3) at 4 p.m. Dec. 28. A loss would put them in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m.

Hales is the defending tournament champion.

Other teams on the Raiders’ half of the bracket are Rich East,

Leo, Thornton and Perspectives Calumet.

The other local team in the Dipper field this season is Joliet Central.

The Steelmen (5-2) open play at 4 p.m. Dec. 26 against Chicago King (4-6).

Joliet Central is paced by seniors Malik Fuller and Taquan Sims along with junior Jose Grubbs and sophomore Cameron Blackmon.

A win there would face the home team Rich South (4-3) or University High at 7 p.m. Dec. 28.

A loss puts the Steelmen in the 12 p.m. consolation game.

Rich Central, Marquette, Marian Catholic and Tinley Park make up the rest of the teams in the bottom bracket.

The championship semifinals are slated for Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. with the championship

game Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.

The third place game is set for 5:30 p.m. and the consolation championship is at 12 p.m.

Thornton is the lone ranked team in the field this season, coming in No. 19 in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our first round match-up is no exception. Oak Park River Forest has an excellent team and they are well coached year after year. We will need to rebound at both ends and play great defense to be competitive.”

A win for the Wolves would likely get them a match-up with topseeded Manual.

Lastly for local teams is Lockport, who will open the tournament at 9 a.m. Dec. 28 against Danville. It will be the Porters’ first trip to Pontiac under new head coach Brett Hespell.

International Transload Logistics opens ‘state of the art’ building in Joliet Company specializes in domestic, international logistics, full-service warehousing International Transload Logistics held a grand opening celebration for its new 303,061 square-foot facility in the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet.

The company, which specializes in domestic and international logistics and full-service warehousing, has been a tenant of Oak Brook based CenterPoint Properties since 2010.

Previously located in Elwood, ITL made the move to the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet to accommodate its growing business and operations.

Christmas Express raises $60K for CASA of Will County Fundraiser helps underwrite organization’s programs and services

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Will County raised more than $60,000 for programs during its annual Christmas Express train ride, held the first weekend in December, Dec. 5-6. The event was presented by Midland States Bank of Joliet, with other sponsors including D’Arcy Motors, CITGO, Joliet Junior Woman’s Club, Caton Commercial Real Estate Group and Holly Club of Joliet.

“We are very proud of how this event has transformed over the past seven years,” said CASA of Will County Executive Director Rita Facchina. “Each year, our numbers get larger, and the magical holiday experience is enhanced by the generous support of the community.

The strong community support we see year after year allows us to directly help the children within Will County and that’s what makes this event truly special.”

The first day began with families being greeted at check-in by “Santa’s Elves.” Visitors enjoyed playing games provided by the Joliet Junior Woman’s Club while excitedly awaiting their departure to the “North Pole.”

Families then boarded a Metra train, en route to see Santa. Each train car was escorted by volunteer elves who led the guests in Christmas songs.

As each train arrived in Tinley Park, the elves marched passengers down Oak Park Avenue to Durbin’s Restaurant to see Santa and to enjoy a buffet breakfast or lunch.

Saturday’s festivities also included a “Santa’s Workshop” at the Tinley Park Fire Station, where guests made reindeer food, enjoyed face painting, wrote letters to Santa and created holiday-themed crafts, courtesy of Macaroni Kid Joliet – Shorewood and Holly Club of Joliet.

On Sunday, guests returned to Durbin’s for breakfast or lunch, pictures with Santa and had cookies delivered by Mrs. Claus. Santa’s Workshop, complete with crafts, cookies and fun activities was held at the American Legion.

The Christmas Express is one of several key fundraisers to underwrite CASA of Will County programs and services. The next event is the “Have a Heart for the Child” Benefit Auction Gala to be held Feb. 27 at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet. The elegant event will feature Andy Avalos, meteorologist for NBC 5 Chicago, as the master of ceremonies.
