Shoveling guidelines Commercial property owners are responsible for plowing commercial parking lots, driveways, and public sidewalks adjoining their businesses, according to the city.

Residential property owners are responsible for shoveling or plowing public sidewalks adjoining their homes. Shoveling snow into the street is a city code violation.

Additionally, the city is asking

residents to shovel out fire hydrants that are in or around their property and clear the area around meters to aid utility workers; clear sidewalks of snow for pedestrian safety; and uncover their mailbox and create a path for postal vehicles to pull up to mailboxes.

Residents are also asked to help neighbors who, because of age or medical conditions, have difficulty shoveling snow.

With winter approaching and the threat of winter storms increasing, the city of Joliet is reminding residents of its snow removal policies and actions for the upcoming winter season.

In a press release from the city, officials said residents should be aware of Joliet’s snow parking

For older neighborhoods in Joliet that do not have adequate offstreet parking options, the city is encouraging residents in those areas to seek permission from neighbors who have off-street parking spaces or explore other parking options, such as commercial or church parking lots. Joliet police have the

ban and shoveling guidelines, as well as the importance of winter preparedness. “Please take caution during any snow storm if you need to be driving on the roadways,” city spokeswoman Peggy Thomas said in the release. “If at all possible, please remain home during the time when it is snowing.”

If travel is unavoidable, the city said drivers should make sure their gas tank is full and have a survival kit in their vehicle, which should

include a cellphone and charger, blankets or sleeping bag, flashlight and batteries, and high-calorie, non-perishable food.

Drivers are encouraged to tell their family and friends where they are going, as well as their expected route and time of arrival.

In the event a driver becomes stranded on the road during a winter storm, they should call for help and not attempt to walk to safety.

“Stay in your vehicle and attach a cloth to the antenna or window to indicate you need help,” the city said. “Turn on the dome light and flashers to make your vehicle more noticeable.”

During snowfall events, the city’s roadways division mobilizes its crews when there is a measurable accumulation of snow or if a winter mix is causing hazardous driving conditions. The roadways division is responsible for more than 500 miles of roadway, according to the city. Its fleet contains 37 snow plow trucks and a crew of 37 employees.

“Joliet has a goal of clearing all streets within 24 hours after the snow stops falling,” the city said, noting that heavier snow typically takes longer to clear. “Due to the volume of streets to be cleared of snow, and the staffing and equipment available, roadways crews will not

return to streets where parked vehicles were not moved when the plow came through the first time during snow removal operations.”

The city said crews return during normal working hours after all streets have been cleared.

Street plowing operations are performed in the following order: major arterials, hospital routes, hills, and bridges; subdivision mains and collector streets; all remaining subdivision streets; and cul-de-sacs and dead ends. The city does not plow alleys.

Due to the cost of de-icing materials, the city said the roadways division only uses salt on major arterials and subdivision mains at intersections and mid blocks, and a mixture of salt and sand at the intersections only on the subdivision streets.

New study to investigate DuPage River flooding River, tributaries drain over 353 square miles in Cook, DuPage, Will counties By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

After the flood of April 2013 hit at least 20 area communities hard, causing major damage to both residential and public areas, an investigation was deemed necessary.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a series of public meetings last week in Bolingbrook, Wheaton and Shorewood to share a first look of the DuPage River Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study and solicit concerns and information from residents.

In July 2015, the USACE, Chicago District, signed a Feasibility Cost Share Agreement with the DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee and Will County Executive Office to initiate the study, which will investigate overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries.

The study is still in its infancy, and the USACE, in coordination with local agencies, is hosting numerous meetings to further its research, identify and prioritize high-risk areas, and develop possible structural and nonstructural alternatives to address flooding.

Though the April 2013 flood was

the most recent and devastating to the area, it wasn’t the first. Other major storm events that caused the river’s basin to flood occurred in 1996, 2008 and 2009.

The DuPage River and tributaries drain approximately 353 square miles in suburban Cook, DuPage, and Will counties.

The area has seen rapid growth over the past two decades, and now includes 40 communities and approximately 900,000 residents.

With the DuPage River flowing through the majority of the northwest part of Will County, including Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield and Crest Hill, nearly 55 percent of the population in that area are prone to potential flooding.

During the Nov. 16 meeting at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, many area residents came to attest to just that, saying that they have seen a substantial increase in flooding over the years.

Many long-time residents, some living in their homes for more than 40 years, recall when then there was no flooding to times now when backyards and roadways resemble a pond.

Many blamed growth without proper retention, calling for something to be done to block off the overbank flooding that is now all too common.

wasn’t event considered a flood plain,” Plainfield resident Gary Magauder said. “Now, it rains two inches and the river floods. We are obsessed with building roads and bridges… Well, we created a manmade monster. Some serious action is needed.”

Bolingbrook resident Judy Bredeweg shared a similar story.

Bredeweg said she went from never seeing water at her home near Royce and Boughton roads to now experiencing three feet of water in her backyard during a recent flood.

As a former Will County board member, she recalled open space planning, the creation of berms to stop flooding and the idea that Whalon Lake would take in the overflow.

“Nothing is happening, yet something needs to be done,” said Bredeweg. “I hope something can be done. I am too old to run for

office again.”

Carl Bryant of Plainfield said the misplacement of berms can sometimes cause further flooding in other areas.

He spoke of the berm built by the Lakelands subdivision, which was recently deemed illegal to have been constructed, calling for further investigation.

Bolingbrook resident Sean Salisbury added that the newly constructed 95th Street Bridge should just be called a dam. He said he has already seen an increase of flooding since its construction.

Input and solutions Officials at the meeting explained this was merely a time to listen to public input, but added that the study intends to evaluate a large range of possible solutions, including floodwater storage, levees or floodwalls, diversion channels or channel modifications, flow control structures, flood-proofing, structure elevations and buyouts.

Input received is expected to help refine areas of focus for the study and identify significant resources in the watershed.

The USACE expects issues to

include flooding at homes and businesses, access to emergency services and critical facilities during flood events, and effects on existing natural and cultural resources in the watershed.

The study will include Bolingbrook, Joliet, Shorewood, Romeoville, Crest Hill, Plainfield, Minooka, Channahon, Plainfield Township and Wheatland Township in Will County.

DuPage County communities to be covered by the study include Bartlett, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Hanover Park, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Westmont, Winfield and Woodridge.

The USACE is seeking additional comments in writing by Dec. 4.

He has long argued policies are too expensive and deductibles too high for all except those who get the highest subsidies—in other words, those with the lowest incomes.

Laszewski predicts even higher increases for next year along with higher deductibles and a smaller choice of doctors and hospitals. That’s what the Illinois woman is afraid of.

“I didn’t expect these kinds of increases year after year,” she told me. “It was like the first year was a big come-on.

Everybody gets in and the second year they sock it to you.”

And for next year?

“Who knows,” she says. “Still counting down to Medicare.”

County reports 8 tuberculosis cases since July Infection risk highest for individuals with weakened immune systems The Will County Health Department said last week that active tuberculosis is on the rise in the county.

Sunny Hill Tuberculosis Clinic in Joliet reported eight cases of active TB since July 1, compared with only one case in the first six months of 2015. Each new active TB case requires constant monitoring and a specific regimen of antibiotics lasting six months or longer.

Dan Garganera, medical director of Sunny Hill, said he suspects that the number of local cases could continue to rise.

“Tracking TB cases and tracing their contacts is a huge undertaking

requiring lots of manpower,” said Garganera, who is an infectious disease and internal medicine specialist with Southwest Infectious Disease Specialists Ltd. “More cases of active TB means a greater risk for Will County overall. TB is treatable, but treatment and prevention require lots of resources.”

Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial infection spread by coughing and sneezing. The risk of TB infection is highest for persons with weakened immunity resulting from afflictions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, kidney disease, organ transplantation, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and

individuals receiving specialized treatment for autoimmune disorders.

The health department said babies and young children are also especially susceptible because their immune systems may not be fully developed “Antibiotic-resistant TB is obviously a special concern,” Garganera said. “Multi drugresistant TB means the bacteria is resistant to at least 2 of the 4 firstline medications used to treat the disease. We are now also dealing with extensively drug-resistant TB, which means the bacteria has developed resistance to at least two of the backbone drugs used for TB treatment, and also resistant to one or more of the drugs constituting

“We need new medications to fight a wide range of infectious diseases.”

Nearly 100 of the 9,412 TB cases reported in 2014 in the U.S. were drug resistant, and more than 66 percent of the 2014 cases occurred among foreign-born Americans.

“International air travel is a large and growing problem in terms of tuberculosis management,” Garganera said. “Active TB cases

from other parts of the world [where TB is most active], create tremendous problems when they come to our shores and assimilate into the community undetected.

One active TB case can easily infect many over a year’s time. And, the problem is significantly multiplied if the initial case happens to be an infection which is drug-resistant.”

To date, none of the active TB case in Will County have shown drug resistance, but Sunny Hill is monitoring two contacts of an extensively drug-resistant case, which entered the country via Chicago O’Hare in early April from India. At least 28 persons from various U.S. locations came in close contact with the traveler, who visited Missouri and Tennessee after departing Chicago.

Garganera said TB killed 1.5 million people worldwide in 2014.

“Drug-resistant TB is more common worldwide than it is here in the U.S., but international air travel means that someone with an active case of drug resistance thousands of miles away from us can hop on a plane and get here in a few hours,” he explained.

“Imported TB from Asia, Africa and Central or South America is a serious threat.”

Sunny Hill, which also provides specialized TB services for Grundy County, devotes significant resource for area residents with latent TB. Persons with latent TB have been exposed to tuberculosis, but do not have active TB. More than 15 million Americans are thought to have latent TB and approximately 10 percent of them will eventually develop an active TB infection.

Persons with latent TB do not feel sick and cannot transmit TB to others. Nevertheless, they must be monitored and treated to make sure the bacteria in their bodies do not develop into active TB infection.

Third annual Santa Run set for Nov. 28 Race starts at 9 a.m. at Joliet Central High School

On Nov. 28, the Joliet Township High School Alumni Association will continue the holiday tradition that began in 2013.

More than 500 Santa “impersonators” will participate in the 3rd annual Santa Run 5K/ Santa Stroll 1 Mile Walk through the streets of downtown Joliet.

“This event is not timed and has become a tradition with families and friends, all sharing holiday cheer,” said Lynne Lichtenauer, JTHS Director of Alumni Relations.

The Santas will begin the race at 9 a.m. at the Joliet Central High School field house. The finish line returns the Santas to Joliet

Central for a festive, fun afterrace party.

“All registered participants receive a five-piece Santa suit including a hat, beard, jacket, pants and belt and it’s theirs to keep,” Lichtenauer said. “The suit must be worn to race or walk.”

The entry fee is $25 for adults, $15 for students, $10 for children ages 5-12 and free for children under 4. Individuals who are interested in participating can register online at www.jths.org and click “Alumni Events” or at www.active.com.

Central honored for Voice of Democracy speeches More than 40,000 high school students from across the country entered contest

Joliet Central High School sophomores Emma Goode, Grace Quijano and Sergio Jimenez were recently awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Voice of Democracy educational awards through their participation in the Voice of Democracy audioessay competition. Sophomores Makenzie Harris and Marcos Singletary also submitted pieces to the competition.

More than 40,000 high school students from across the country entered to win a share of $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW. Goode was awarded first place with a prize of $100. Quijano was awarded second place with a $50 prize and Jimenez took third, receiving $25. The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program in 1947 to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles.

At the beginning of the season, the Joliet Catholic Academy offense seemed to be set for the long haul with several talented athletes in the backfield.

When Harry Davis was injured, however, senior running back Michael Johnson was tabbed to carry the load of the offense.

He did so to the tune of 1,986 yards on 260 carries, an average of 7.6 yards per rush. Johnson tallied 26 touchdowns on the ground, adding five more scores through the air, adding more than receiving yards. He was named to the Illinois High School Coaches’ Association Class 5A All-State team.

For his success, Johnson is the Voyager Media 2015 Football Offensive Player of the Year.

“He is one of the best backs in the area. He can run the ball out of the wing position or the tail position,” said JCA coach Dan Sharp. “He is a great downhill runner, a great edge runner and

has great hands and is excellent in the passing game and he blocks very well. He is an all around offensive threat. He is the type of guy that can make big plays, but can also sustain drives with some hard runs up the middle.

“I don’t know of a back in the area that has all of the skills that he has. He is a good of a back as we have had and he will be a great back on Saturdays, no matter what college he picks. He is a great choice for the player of the year.”

Johnson said he knew what he had to do when Davis was lost for an extended time.

“I knew I had to put the team on my back and go hard. I knew I had to take on that responsibility,” he said. “I came here and put it all on the line for my team every game. But, I wouldn’t be anything without those big guys up front.

They knew they just had to get a key block for me and I would go and when I was in the open field, I was gone.”

Several locals headline all area team With the 2015 season in the books, here is the 30-man Voyager Media All-Area Football Team.

Meekah Ben-Israel Joliet West senior leader totaled 53 tackles and five tackles for loss as a defensive tackle for Joliet West.

Tuf Borland Voyager Media Defensive POY had 165 tackles, 11 for loss to lead Bolingbrook.

John Carnagio A junior quarterback from Minooka, Carnagio helped the Indians return to the playoffs this past season, throwing for 1,787 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He will re-write the record books here at MCHS,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “Set school records for completions in a season (143) and for yards.

A 6-foot, 3-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman, Chmielewski was a big part of Lockport’s strong finish to the 2015 season.

“Matt is a three-year varsity starter,” Lockport coach Daniel Starkey said. “Matt consistently graded out at a championship level, leading our offensive players each week. Matt was a physical presence and allowed our two tailbacks (Matt Skobel and Sheldon Snapp) to rush for over 1,000 yards combined. Matt has several D1 FCS offers and has verbally committed to Southern Illinois University.”

The senior offensive lineman from Notre Dame led the rushing attack for the Dons. He helped the offense finish with 1,970 yards passing and 1,902 yards rushing and an 8-2 record.

“JD has been a three-year starter for us and was great leader in our program,” North coach Tim Kane said. “His numbers speak for themselves in terms of how much he led our offense this year.

He set numerous school records for passing yardage and TDs.”

The Minooka junior is setting school records for receiving. In 10 games he amassed 54 receptions (school record) for 803 yards with eight TD’s. He also accumulated 376 yards in return yardage.

“Isaiah has tremendous quickness and skill in route running along with the ability to score from anywhere on the field when the ball is in his hands,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “He also earned much of his yards and catches while being double teamed. Expect great things from him in 2016.”

Mitch Ganassin The senior from Plainfield South was a key playmaker on defense and special teams. He had 29 solo tackles as a corner, four interceptions and returned two punts for TD’s and blocked a FG. “Always drew the opponents best receiver,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “Strong, fast as a pass defender and very effective

“Zach has to have some of the top stats around for a WR,” Kane said. “He was a game breaker for us and proved to be a very difficult

matchup for many teams. He also set numerous school records for receiving yards and TDs.”

The CSL South Lineman of the Year had 37 pancakes for Maine South in his junior season. He is getting looks from Big 10 schools.

“Will be second best linemen to play for Maine South only behind Dave Butz of Washington Redskins,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said.

A Plainfield East senior and Ball State commit, Koch had four touchdowns on offense and had nine tackles for loss and four sacks on defense.

“Played both sides of the ball a majority of the time,” East coach Mike Romeli said. “He is one of the best blocking tight ends in the midwest as multiple recruiters stated over the spring, summer and fall.”

Eric Johnson A senior from Plainfield South, Johnson finished with 74 tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 12 sacks from his defensive end position.

“He is very difficult to single block,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “He has quickness off the ball and utilization of exceptional technique along with athleticism made him very difficult to contain.”

Alec McEachern Two-way player for Benet had 81 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six pass break-ups, three interceptions and six forced fumbles. On offense he ran 106 times for 608 yards and eight touchdowns.

Mark McGrath Lisle junior finished the season with 114 carries for 504 yards and 17 catches for 430 yards. He added 560 yards passing with 14 total touchdowns, 25 extra points and converted four field goals. On defense he tallied 31 tackles and two interceptions.

Danny Saracco The senior from Plainfield South was a three-year starter and SPC Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the year with 98 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and six sacks.

“He is excellent to the ball, finishes tackles, made defensive adjustments, aggressive and complete as a run and pass defender,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “He is an exceptional defensive contributor.”

Tim Simon A do-it-all player from Notre Dame, the senior was rarely off the field during a game. He finished the season catching 39 passes for 814 yards and 11 touchdowns. On defense he had 33 tackles and three interceptions.

He contributed 315 yards in punt returns with a touchdown. He

converted 9-of-12 field goals and 37-of-40 extra points, averaged 33 yards per punt and also kicked off for the Dons.

Erik Swenson A 6-foot, 5-inch, 285-pound senior offensive lineman from Downers Grove South, he committed to the University of Michigan.

“He has been a four-year starter and a kid that has progressively gotten better,” said South coach Mark Molinari. “He is a guy that we could count on to be a good pass and run blocker for us. We haven’t had a whole lot of big D-I players here and he is one of the top ones.”

Jack Sznajder The senior quarterback from Benet completed 165-of-281 passes for 1,981 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the Redwings to a playoff victory and missing one game due to injury.

USF earns several postseason awards University of St. Francis junior defensive end Tim Smith (Oregon, Ill./ Oregon) was named Defensive Player of the Year, head coach Joe Curry earned Coach of the Year accolades and defensive coordinator Tom Sallay was tabbed Assistant Coach of the Year as the Mid-States Football Association announced its 2015 All-Midwest League Team.

Smith finished the season ranked fourth in the NAIA in tackles-for-loss (21) and fifth in sacks (10) – topping the MSFA in both categories – to help lead the Saints (8-3, 4-1 MSFA Midwest) to a share of the Midwest League title and a No. 18 ranking in the final NAIA regular-season coaches’ poll.

Curry, who finished his fourth year at the helm of the USF football program, led the Saints to their first conference title since 2011. USF’s 8-3 record marked its third winning season in four years under Curry, who raised his career record to 2519. In his first year as the Saints’ defensive coordinator, Sallay engineered a unit that concluded the regular season ranked fourth in the NAIA in scoring defense (15.5), 14th in total defense (317.9) and 17th in rushing defense (118.3).

“It was great playing with him,” Michael said. “I knew what he could do, so I could push him.”

Michael said that he knew from the offseason that he would have to put work in to be the best he wanted to.

“In the summer, I knew I needed to come out here and prove to people that I am a good running back and I needed to get more schools looking at me,” Michael said. “And I guess I did it.”

Woodard, the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week following a three-interception performance against Robert Morris University Illinois, ranked fifth in the NAIA with five picks on the season.

Magee rushed for 903 yards and seven touchdowns while surpassing 100 yards on five occasions. He also caught 28 passes for 225 yards and a pair of scores. Sheldon Magee led the Saints in receptions (34) and yards receiving (535). He scored three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing. Webster started all 11 games at left guard this season and all 44 contests during his career.

Mulroe started all 11 games at the left tackle slot.

Senior nose tackle Ali Aqel (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg), junior defensive end Calvin Brayboy (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) and junior safety Mikail Davis (Peoria, Ill./ Richwoods) were selected to the Second Team Defense. Aqel made 34 tackles, including three TFLs and three pass breakups.

Brayboy collected five sacks and eight TFLs, while sharing the team lead with three forced fumbles.

Davis intercepted two passes, one of which he returned 55 yards for a touchdown against Trinity International University.

Sophomore wideout Jean Pietrzak (Westmont, Ill./ Westmont) and sophomore return specialist Eli Spann (Valrico, Fla./ Tampa Bay Tech) represented USF on the Second Team Offense. JFLs,

“Honestly, the only thing I worry about are wins and losses,” Borland said. “It is my competitiveness, I think. I know the only thing that is important are wins and losses and that is what I tried to help the team do.”

Borland was a starter as a freshman for the Raiders and in his career, he has posted a record of 31-13, advancing to the playoffs every season and winning four post season games.

Borland’s individual stats and hunger to help his team win has made him the Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season.

He is the only winner of this award, after Voyager Media created different winners on each side of the ball.

Even with the accolades, Borland wanted more wins.

“The season didn’t pan out the way we wanted it to. We just couldn’t find it,” Borland said.

“We put some things together at the end of the year. We had some

chances in the playoff game with Naperville Central. We just couldn’t pull it off.”

Next season, Borland is headed to one of the epicenters of winning in college football, as he attends Ohio State University.

The Buckeyes are 38-3 in three seasons under coach Urban Meyer, including a national championship last year.

“They are a great program and have a great tradition and are known for winning. I am extremely luck and blessed to be able to go to school and play there,” Borland said.

Borland plans to follow other former Raiders and graduate from Bolingbrook early and enroll early at Ohio State.

“Going into high school that was something I wanted to do.

I saw (Antonio) Morrison do it and he had success, so I knew it was something I needed to do,” he said. “Talking to the Huffs (Jacob and Julian) and Micah (Dew-Treadway) and Parrker (Westphal), they have all done it and they had all positive feedback.”

Joliet Diocese’s schools recommended for systemwide accreditation Recommendation to be reviewed by AdvancED Accreditation Commission The Diocese of Joliet announced last week that its 46 elementary schools and one diocesansponsored high school underwent a three-year accreditation process to align with the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools.

“Essential to the mission of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet is a renewed Catholic culture that begins with authentically Catholic teaching,” said Rev. John

Belmonte, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Joliet.

As part of the AdvancED accreditation process, a group of Catholic school superintendents, school administrators and educators from around the country spent three days evaluating the Diocese of Joliet school system.

More than 150 interviews were conducted as part of the process.

The AdvancED review team interviews included Bishop R.

Daniel Conlon, Belmonte, the Catholic schools office staff, board members, school marketing and development representatives, parents, students and principals.

The evaluation team also made on-site visits to 10 pre-selected schools.

The diocese said review team announced it would recommend accreditation for the Diocese of Joliet schools through AdvancED, the world’s largest third-party school accrediting agency.

The recommendation will be reviewed and acted upon by the national AdvancED Accreditation Commission this December.

“We stand in awe to your profound commitment of the entire school community to Catholic values and traditions,” said Mary Ann Keeley, vice president of AdvancED in the Northeast USA and Canada.

The school system had an overall score of 308.05, the network average of 278.34.

Additionally, the system achieved scores above the national norm

in all categories. In the teaching and learning category, the district scored 291.43, compared with the national average of 268.94. The diocese scored 343.33 in leadership capacity, compared with 292.64 nationally, and 298.75 in resource utilization, compared with 283-86.

“This system-wide accreditation process has recognized our commitment to our mission and our emphasis on excellence in every aspect of our schools and especially on the authenticity of the Catholic teaching and practices within our schools,” Belmonte said. “The importance we place on continuous improvement will ensure that we will strengthen Catholic mission and renew the Catholic culture of our schools.”

In an effort to develop common language for school improvement, school leaders and a locally appointed AdvancED chair provided data for performance benchmarks that enabled the schools to evaluate, strengthen and sustain their school.

“We are pleased to have

worked with AdvancED on this accreditation process and are confident that our schools, and ultimately our students, will benefit from a clear strategic path that will be in place for years to come,” said Madonna Turner, Assistant Superintendent for Accreditation and Planning, Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Joliet.

Following accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the Catholic Schools Office will submit a progress report in two years to measure the school system’s improvement.

The National Catholic Standards provides an agreed upon criteria for Catholic school excellence, according to the diocese. The standards were developed by Loyola University, the School of Education and the Center for Catholic School Effectiveness in conjunction with broad collaboration among Catholic educators across the nation.

Adler and Stephen were among

many honored during the ceremony, which was held Nov. 2.

“Both of these incredible men truly deserved this prestigious honor,” the chamber said in a press release.

According to the plaque, Adler

and Stephen received the award “for achieving monumental heights in giving, caring and changing the lives of others.”

Stephen owned and worked at many businesses, including Merry Crest, Stepman, Twin Oaks Development, Joliet Tennis Club, and West Jefferson Property and Bank, among others. Adler worked in his family business throughout his career, building it into a successful enterprise.

For more than 20 years, both men were involved strongly in the Will County Habitat for Humanity, which Adler called their labor of love.

“When they brought this organization to our area, they began a plan to determine how they can use it to benefit the Joliet area,” the chamber added.

Stephen would go out and get people to donate services, material and work, while Adler worked the

financial end. In that time, the two men have been directly involved with building approximately 60 homes in Joliet.

They were also involved in opening the Habitat for Humanity Restore, which is currently located on Larkin Avenue in Joliet.

“Both of these men have done so much for this community and the Joliet Chamber is proud to have given them these awards,” the release went on to say.

Christmas in the Square & Festival of Trees. 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Central Square, 222 E. Ninth St., Lockport. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the holidays at the Annual Christmas in the Square event.

Come visit Santa and his reindeer, live from the North Pole! Santa will have a special gift for each child. Christmas in the Square Children’s crafts, special treats and entertainment will be available too. Cost: free.

Annual Christmas Tea. 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Gladys Fox Museum, 231 E. Ninth St., Lockport. Join for the Annual Christmas Tea featuring tea sandwiches and a variety of homemade Christmas cookies (to eat there and take home), Christmas music, a homemade Christmas quilt will be given away and you will take home a special Christmas tea cup.

from the Festival of Trees. Cost: $20/ resident, $27/non-resident.

Holiday Cards for Heroes & You. 3 to 4:30 p.m. at White Oak Library Crest Hill Branch, 20670 Len Kubinski Drive. Make holiday cards for your family and support our troops!

The cards dedicated to the troops will be distributed domestically and internationally to veterans and other active military personnel by the American Red Cross. This program is open to all ages. Register online, in person or by phone. Call From Santa. Santa will be making calls to Shorewood children

Letters are available on the village of Shorewood’s website, http://vil. shorewood.il.us, and must be received no later than noon Dec. 1. Letters can be mailed to the village -- Santa, ℅ Village of Shorewood, 1 Towne Center Blvd., Shorewood -- or dropped off in person at village hall. Santa will only have time to call children 10 years and younger. Be sure to stay close to the phone.

Paws with Claus Pet Photos.

7 to 9 p.m. at Louis Joliet Mall, 3340 Mall Loop Drive, Joliet. While we all love celebrating every day with our pets, this is a special time of year for these furry family members (and their moms and dads). Wellmannered cats, dogs and other friendly pets are invited to spend time with Santa in Carson’s Court.

Furry Babies will provide treats to your woof-tastic friends!
