Elmer and Matilda Wilhelm spent the last several years of their lives volunteering together at Silver Cross Hospital. Matilda, known as Tilly among hospital staff, volunteered in the hospital’s surgical waiting room and discharge lounge for 15 years, and her husband of 60 years would often accompany her as a volunteer. In

March 2014, Elmer died at the age of 86. His wife passed away nearly a year later in February 2015.

Both former school teachers, the Lockport couple left the Silver Cross Foundation a $100,000 gift to be used toward continuing education scholarships for the hospital’s employees.

“Elmer and Tilly’s love of learning will leave a lasting legacy,” said Paul Pawlak, president and CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.

“Their generous gift will allow our nurses, technicians and other caregivers to further their training so we can continue to bring the latest advances in treatments and technologies to our patients for many years to come.”

Born Jan. 13, 1928, in Chicago, Elmer went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in education from Northern Illinois State Teachers College and a Master’s in school administration from Northern Illinois University, where he met Tilly.

He began his teaching career with Joliet Public Grade School District 86 at Culbertson School and later taught at Gompers Junior High. He went on to be the superintendent of Lockport’s Fairmont School District 89 from 1962 to 1971 and Taft School District from 1971 to 1978.

Elmer was also a charter member of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association and Special Deputy of the Will County Police, president of the New Lenox Library Board and Will County Board of Health,

Tilly was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Science in education at Northern Illinois University and a Master’s in education from Roosevelt University. She was a teacher and principal in Elgin for 35 years and spent the rest of her career at Forest Park and Culbertson Schools in Joliet. Tilly was also involved in the community, serving as an election judge for many years and as a member of the Audubon Society and Delta Kappa Gamma – retired teachers’ organization.

“Tilly and Elmer valued having quality healthcare available in our region and wanted to leave a lasting legacy when we discussed their estate plans,” said Larry Johnson, vice president of the Silver Cross Foundation. “This gift achieved their goal, and we will be forever grateful.”

Pace approves fare increases Cash-paying riders will pay 25 cents more per ride By igor studeNkov BUGLE STaFF

Pace bus riders will pay a quarter more per ride – but only if they pay using cash. The increase was part of the suburban bus transit agency’s budget for the 2016 fiscal year.

The budget also includes a 15cent increase for cash-paying riders who qualify for reduced fares. Cash-paying riders that take express buses that run between southwestern suburbs and downtown Chicago won’t be affected.

The Pace Board of Directors unanimously approved the increase during its Nov. 11 meeting.

The budget also calls for a total of $227.97 million in spending, $7.6 million of which will go toward service improvements. Most

notably, all new Pace buses will come equipped with Wi-Fi. The new budget, along with the fare increase, will take effect Jan. 1.

Until Pace’s recent implementation of the Ventra card, most riders paid in cash.

Riders could also pay with CTA’s magnet strip cards and the Chicago Card. The fare for standard, non-express routes is $1.75. Cash-paying riders that wished to make a transfer could pay an extra quarter and receive a magnetic strip transfer card, which entitles a rider to two transfers within the span of two hours.

In July 2014, Pace’s old card readers were deactivated in order to complete the switch to Ventra.

Cash-paying riders were no longer able to ask for transfer cards, but the fares remained the same.

Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot explained that the 25-cent

increase for cash-paying riders wasn’t a way to collect revenue.

“Pace intends to discourage the use of cash to reduce the costs associated with processing and handling coins and bills,” he said. “[The policy] mirrors practices already in place at CTA and the Illinois Tollway.”

Indeed, CTA bus riders who pay fares in cash currently have to pay an extra 25 cents.

Wilmot explained that Pace planned to implement the fare increase as part of the switch to Ventra, but the agency ultimately decided to hold off to give riders time to transition to the cards.

Unlike CTA, however, Wilmot said Pace doesn’t have a large network of train stations where it could place Ventra vending machines. That meant that most riders had to either order the cards online or purchase them at retail locations. Since 2013,

Pace was working to expand the network of retailers that would sell Ventra cards. But in July 2014, the process wasn’t as far along as the agency would have liked.

The situation has improved significantly since then, Wilmot explained.

“We are much further along than we were in the past,” he said. “Approximately 80 percent of fares on Pace are currently paid using Ventra cards.”

The increase won’t affect express bus routes that charge premium fares. This includes routes 755 and 855, which run between Plainfield and Chicago, and routes 850 and 851, which run between Bolingbrook and Chicago.

The budget calls for Pace to spend $7.6 million on service improvements. According to the budget, Pace plans to order 75 new buses – 72 for regular routes and three for express routes.

Before adopting the budget, Pace held 13 public hearings in

Chicago and the six suburban counties it serves. According to Rocky Donahue, one of Pace’s Deputy Executive Directors, riders that attended those meetings didn’t have many complaints about the budget.

“Two comments were on the issue of the fare increases,” he said. “One was supportive; one was just clarification. When [the rider] realized that Ventra fares would remain the same, they realized that they were fine.”

While the budget is balanced, the paratransit service portion of the budget is only balanced if Illinois pays the annual $8.5 million paratransit grant. In a statement to the press, Wilmot wrote that if the grant doesn’t materialize, Pace may need to raise paratransit fares to cover the cost.

“If the grant is not received and the paratransit program faces a budget shortfall, a fare increase may need to be proposed at a later date,” he wrote.

Rock Island weekend express service made permanent Weekend express service was set to end Nov. 29 Metra’s experiment with weekend express trains on the Rock Island Line will be made permanent starting Nov. 30, according to a press release on the city of Joliet’s website.

A new weekday outbound express train will make its debut starting on that date, as well.

“We received very positive feedback from customers who like the new weekend express trains on the Rock Island and wanted us to continue operating them,” said Don Orseno, executive director and CEO of Metra. “Moving forward, we plan to review adjustments to our other train schedules to see where new or expanded express service might make sense.”

Last June, six express trains were added to the Rock Island

schedule in each direction on Saturdays and Sundays.

The express trains bypass the Beverly Branch, which is served by separate trains, prompting a 20-minute reduction in travel time between suburban stations and downtown Chicago. About 870 additional customers per Saturday and about 300 per Sunday were estimated to have taken advantage of this new express service.

The weekend express service was set to end Nov. 29, but is now being made part of the permanent weekend schedule.

However, the train’s departure and arrival times are being slightly adjusted.

Inbound express trains will leave Joliet 5 minutes earlier, and outbound express trains will leave LaSalle Street 10 minutes later. In addition, the outbound express time to Joliet will be reduced by 5 minutes.

In addition, Metra is adding an outbound express train to the weekday schedule. Train

No. 413, which now departs at 4:57 p.m. and stops at all stations south of Blue Island except Joliet, will still depart at 4:57 p.m. but will now stop at 35th Street, express to Tinley Park/80th Avenue, the busiest stop on the line, and then make all remaining stops with the addition of Joliet.

Metra said the change is expected to relieve overcrowding issues on No. 415, which departs LaSalle Street at 5:15 p.m., expresses to Midlothian and makes all remaining stops to Joliet.

Also starting Nov. 30, Metra is making schedule changes to a handful of other trains to reflect actual operating conditions, improve connections and enhance operational efficiency. Metra customers are strongly urged to check the new schedule to determine if there are changes to their trains.

Refuse collection week of Nov. 23 Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the city of Joliet and Waste Management announced that collection pickup regularly scheduled for Nov. 26 will be picked up Nov. 27. Customers with collection service regularly scheduled for Friday will have their refuse picked up Nov. 28.

Additionally, Joliet City Hall will be closed Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 in

observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Parking decks will be free of charge and there will be no enforcement of the parking meters on those dates.

There will be some restricted parking areas on downtown streets to accommodate the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Parade that begins at 5 p.m. Nov. 27 in downtown Joliet.

Reminder: Winter Preparedness Month While the winter of 2015-16 is expected to be milder thanks to the effects of El Nino, it is unlikely Illinois will completely avoid the cold temperatures, snow and ice that define Midwestern winters.

To help people prepare for potentially dangerous winter weather, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies will highlight winter weather preparedness throughout November.

“There hasn’t been a winter in Illinois without at least one winter storm in the past century,” said IEMA

Director James K. Joseph. “Right now, before that first snowstorm or ice event, is the perfect time to prepare yourself, your home, and your car for winter.”

Chris Miller, warning coordination meteorologist with the NWS office in Lincoln, said Illinois residents shouldn’t let their guards down.

“We can still expect cold temperatures, snow and ice, which will impact travelers,” he said. In fact, minor accumulations of snow or ice can be just as dangerous for drivers as major winter storms, so they need to adjust their driving accordingly.”

Forest Preserve approves budget, tax levy District: levy will decrease tax rate by 4.6% The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners voted Nov. 12 to approve its 2016 budget and a tax levy that forest preserve officials say will lower the district’s tax rate.

will decrease the tax rate by approximately 4.6 percent, according to the district. The levy will help fund bond payments already approved by the voters.

Commissioners also approved a $47.1 million budget, which the district said includes continued staff reductions from an early retirement incentive program that began in 2015.

“The program streamlines operations and better focuses budget resources to allow the district to remain fiscally responsible and resilient to economic realities,” forest preserve spokesperson Cindy Cain said in a press release.

The budget includes funding for a 1-mile extension of the DuPage River Trail from 95th Street to Knoch Knolls Park in Naperville, which the forest preserve said will be completed in partnership with the Naperville Park District.

The U.S. Government emphatically states though the website of its Office of Personnel Management that “employees have a responsibility to report waste, fraud and abuse,” and that the American “public is also invited to share such concerns.” In order to ensure an efficient and honest government, there are programs in place to allow the people who work in the government to report, free from retaliation, when fraud, waste or abuse occurs. Yet all too often when people decide to take the risk by reporting wrongdoing, they not only aren’t protected, but are attacked by the very government whose interests they seek to protect.

The most recent example of this sad penchant involves recently retired Army officer Lt. Col. Jason Amerine, a highly decorated combat veteran. In late 2013 he was part of an exclusive cell operating out of the Pentagon charged with trying to gain the release of U.S. hostages in various parts of the world. Amerine saw firsthand the dysfunctional interagency squabbling that sabotaged efforts to win the freedom of some American hostages.

He was so incensed by the failures of the agencies that he approached a member of Congress to report the matter. But in January of this year, one of

the organizations of that dysfunctional team – the FBI – sought to put Lt. Col. Amerine “in his place” by asking the Army to open an investigation, stripping him of his security clearance and effectively silencing any further actions.

The inability of the multiple government agencies to work together might have been a contributing factor in the death of one hostage and caused the U.S. to pay a significantly higher strategic price for the release of another. Amerine officially retired from the Army this month, without any charges filed and was awarded the Legion of Merit. While it is gratifying to see Amerine justly cleared of all allegations and winning back his personal honor, the question must be asked: what happened to the individuals in the FBI and CID who were responsible for retaliating against him? The personal hell whistleblowers suffer cannot be overstated.

In 2012 after returning from my second combat deployment to Afghanistan, like Amerine, I approached several members of the House and Senate to tell them the claims of our most senior civilian and military leaders that the war was going well were simply untrue. I also published an unclassified report exposing the truth. As a result I was treated like a pariah. Daily life became almost unbearable, as I was marginalized by superiors; even friends and coworkers feared to be seen talking to me. I can only imagine how much worse life was for people like Jason Amerine, who were subjected to punitive and baseless investigations.

Changes must be made so that governmental agencies and officials

are not able to wantonly make spurious accusations against men and women who blow the whistle on fraud, waste or abuse in an effort to silence them. By making the whistleblowers pay a high personal price, some in the government send a quiet message to others who may consider exposing wrongdoing: don’t even think about saying anything because we’ll make your life a living hell. Help may be on the way.

Working in conjunction with the Project On Government Oversight, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, and Rep. Jackie Speier, D-California, introduced the “Legal Justice for Servicemembers Act,” which seeks to redress some of the weaker points of existing whistleblower protection provisions.

Some of the key features of this bill include permitting legal challenges to retaliatory investigations, establishing fair burdens of proof to establish retaliation, and giving the Inspector General the authority to issue a 90 day “stay” on alleged retaliation while it completes its investigation.

America needs men and women in military service with the moral courage to tell the truth. They carry out a valuable service to the nation by helping to keep government officials honest and by bringing to light situations that need redress which otherwise would remain buried. The least we can do for the courageous people who keep our government accountable is to provide them with legal safeguards.

All veterans are heroes All veterans matter; living or deceased. They all deserve our everlasting gratitude.

Can we as everyday people, imagine what veterans think about?

When a man or a woman put on the uniform, they never know where they will be sent, and if they will ever come home.

The wounded warriors have many obstacles to overcome. Some veterans are wounded physically, some are wounded mentally. You do

not always see mental wounds, but they are always there, hidden.

My knowledge of a wounded mind has empowered and carried me a lifetime. It is addiction. There are many different addictions. There is help now for many returning. Years ago only physical wounds were addressed. Many men and women came home years ago with wounded minds because of their exposure to war. The horror of friends killed in front of their faces remain forever with them. Many 12 step programs, which are much needed, are always available as a solemn fortress.

I recently read a true story of one of our living 91-year-old Vietnam veterans who witnessed his buddy killed. When he went back to retrieve

him, his body was composed. Can we as protected Americans ever conceive such valor?

My eyes fill with tears as I write and reminisce some of my husband’s small combat stories. What can I, or we, as a grateful country give them back what they so much deserve?

Our wounded warriors, some forgotten, some homeless, some beaten inside and out are forever in our hearts.

All veterans are heroes, alive or dead, every day, not just on Veterans Day. Is thank you adequate or sufficient? Is thank you enough?

“The idea of the Peace Pole originated in 1955,” said Friends of Rachel sponsor Patti Edwards.

“Now, there are over 200,000 peace poles planted in 180 countries as an international symbol of peace.”

According to Edwards, the club would like to plant the limestone Peace Pole at the new front entrance as a constant reminder “to think of, wish for, hope, and choose peace in your lives, homes, school, community, and in the world.”

District 202 slates two kindergarten forums Forums are free for community members District 202 will host two community forums to share information about its full-day kindergarten program that will be implemented next school year.

The forums will both be from 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 30 at Ira Jones Middle School, 15320 Wallin Drive; and Dec. 2 at Aux Sable Middle School, 2001 Wildspring Parkway, Joliet.

The forums are free. Community members can attend either or both. The forums will also be recorded and posted on a special “Full Day Kindergarten” link posted on the front page of the web sites for all 17 District 202 elementary schools, the Bonnie McBeth Learning Center and the District 202 site.

The forums are part of the district’s comprehensive communications plan to publicize

the full-day kindergarten program, including a mass mailing, special web site, and telephone and email messages to the community.

District 202 currently offers half-day kindergarten. The district does not have enough room in its schools nor can it afford to hire enough staff to offer full-

day kindergarten for all students following 10 years of tremendous growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

However, full-day kindergarten was identified as a top priority in 2011 as part of the district’s current five-year Strategic Plan, so district officials decided to implement a limited program in 2016-17. Work to develop the initiative has been ongoing for three years.

The 2016-17 pilot full-day kindergarten initiative will serve one classroom of 24 students at each of the district’s 17 elementary schools.

Students will be picked through

a computerized, random, online lottery in early February 2016.

Meanwhile, district officials will continue to study options to expand full-day kindergarten to all students in the near future.

With the way the IHSA playoffs are set up, Joliet Catholic Academy ended up playing back-to-back games against rivals from the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

While the Hilltoppers were able to get past Marian Catholic in round 2, their season came to an end Saturday as Nazareth defeated JCA 35-21.

It is hard to beat a really good team twice, I don’t care what anyone says,” JCA coach Dan Sharp said.

That being said, Nazareth didn’t exactly blow the doors off of JCA, it was more like the Hilltoppers invited them in.

After a fumble on the game’s first play led to a Nazareth score and an interception return for a touchdown on the next possession, Nazareth was ahead 14-0 in the first four minutes of the game.

“It all came down to turnovers,” Sharp said. “We spot them 14 points and then we fumble going in, that is a 21-point swing and that is the difference in the game. I know its cliché when they say that big games come down to kicking and turnovers and look at today.

You just hate it when you play against a great team and then you help them. You just can’t give it to them.

“I am not a statistics guy, but turnovers are the one statistic that always seems to lead to the outcome of the game.”

After the fast lead, JCA got on

the board when quarterback Cade Earl ran the ball in off a bootleg from 5-yards out.

However, Notre Dame-bound athlete Julian Love took a pass over the middle and broke free for a 66yard TD to put the Roadrunners back up 21-7.

JCA cut the lead again when Harry Davis capped off the Hilltoppers’ best drive of the game – one that started inside the 5-yard line – with a 10-yard TD. The momentum appeared to swing to JCA when Luke Phelan came up with an interception and returned it inside the Nazareth 40yard line, but the Hilltoppers were forced to punt it away.

The Roadrunners would put another score on the board to go up 28-14.

After Nazareth survived a fumble in its own endzone, JCA again drove down the field and Michael Johnson appeared to have cut the deficit again when he went airborne reaching for the goal line.

The ball came out at the end and the officials ruled a fumble, however, Johnson disagreed.

“I felt my knees down and I reached out and let the ball go and he hit it out and grabbed it,” Johnson said. “I tried to argue with the ref, but he wasn’t listening.”

The defense held and Earl had another sneak on the ensuing JCA possession that did cut the lead to 28-21 with 6:19 left in the game, but Love iced the game when he took the snap out of the wildcat formation and broke free up the middle for a 77-yard score.

Johnson paced the JCA offense, rushing for 155 yards on 28 carries.

Sharp said he will miss this team and the senior class.

“What I liked about these kids is even down 14-0 early, they

fought,” he said. “That is why I am so proud of them. One game does not make a season. One moment does not make a life. These kids are fighters. They are great kids and they really care about each other. They represented us – Joliet

Catholic and the Joliet community and they made us proud. This team will always be near and dear to me. I wish I could take the pain away from them, but I am so proud of them. They will be great citizens.”

Joliet Catholic falls in Class 3A state title game For the second time in two years, the Joliet Catholic Academy girls volleyball team ended the season in the Class 3A state championship game.

For the second time, the Angels placed second.

JCA fell 25-16, 18-25, 12-25 to Marian Central at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.

JCA (26-13) was paced by Megan Cladis, who tallied nine kills in the championship match, followed by six from Taylor Zurliene and Jessica Simon.

Meghan Harrison posted 13 digs and Simon tallied 10, while adding 11 assists. Megan Melone posted 10 assists as well.

The Angels reached the championship match after defeating LaSalle-Peru 25-21, 2527, 25-13.

In that match Simon tallied nine kills, 15 assists and seven digs, while Cladis added eight kills and Andriana Acosta posted six.

Clark tabbed as volleyball Player of Year

Tiffany Clark wanted to be a soccer player.

In her early years, going to volleyball was not something the Benet Academy senior wanted to do.

But with a little convincing, she did and it was a great decision.

“Soccer was my sport. I came from a soccer family and I wanted to jump on that bandwagon,” Clark said. “My mom had to drag me to volleyball practices when I was 11 or 12 years old and I started liking it more and more and the rest is history.”

Clark was the East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year, is Second Team Under Armor All-American, 18U AllAmerica. She was named to the all-tournament team in all four of Benet’s tournaments this season and was MVP of the Wheaton Classic and Autumnfest.

She posted 179 kills, 390 digs and 17 blocks on the season.

For her efforts, she has been named the 2015 Voyager Media Volleyball Player of the Year.

“Tiffany is the hardest working player we have ever had at Benet,” said Benet coach Brad Baker. “She has an extremely high motor and is driven to be best. She sets high goals for herself and works very hard to achieve them.”

During her transition from soccer to volleyball, Clark never imagined the accolades that would come with her new sport.

“Back then I never thought I would play on state championship caliber teams or playing for the United States,” she said. “They were pretty humble beginnings, but I am glad I choose volleyball and I’m glad my mom pushed me to do it.”

A libero by trade, Clark moved to

outside hitter a few weeks into the high school season, but still posted a 73.2 percent dig percentage for the Redwings, committing only 60 errors in 451 attempts.

“It was tough,” Clark said. “But, I do enjoy hitting the ball even though I am a libero at heart. I was willing to do whatever coach wanted to do because I trust him and I thought the switch was beneficial for the team. It was a good change of pace getting to hit once in a while.”

Now that high school is over, it is back to libero for Clark as she heads to the University of Michigan.

“I am excited to start club,” Clark said. “I am really looking forward to Michigan. I committed a while ago, but I still have the same enthusiasm as I did sophomore. I am excited to go play in Ann Arbor and play at one of the highest levels of volleyball that you can without playing for the United States. I am looking forward to playing in the Big Ten and starting the next chapter in my life.”

Niki Ahlstrand Maine East outside hitter had 243 kills, 92 blocks and 42 aces for the Demons.

Eleni Balourdos The junior setter from Niles West finished the season with 1,528 assists, 109 digs, 66 aces and 38 blocks for the Wolves.

Jennilyn Cave Bolingbrook senior setter had 528 assists, a .319 hitting percentage, 38 aces and 116 digs.

“Jennilyn played for varsity three years, and her experience had a great influence on our team this season,” Bolingbrook coach Andrea

Bercot said. “Her confidence and positive energy set the pace for our team’s performance. She was a great leader for us on and off the court.”

Shannon Doran Senior setter helped Joliet West win a regional title. She finished the season with 643 assists, 47 aces, 137 digs and 25 blocks.

“Shannon was the glue to our team this year,” West coach Al Mart said. “She did a tremendous job running our offense. By far, our most improved player this past year.”

Erin Eulitz A senior from Plainfield Central, Eulitz tallied 315 kills, 29 aces and 296 digs, while hitting at a .261 clip.

“Erin was our go-to hitter this year,” Central coach Erik Vogt said.

“When Elizabeth Hyland left last year we had no idea how we will fill the void. Erin took that spot and made it her own. Not only was Erin an effective passer this season but a very powerful hitter. She might be the best defensive player (that’s not a libero) in our area.”

Emily Hise Minooka senior totaled 117 kills and 122 blocks from her middle position.

“Emily has one of the best blocks in the area,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “She has been a strong force in our defense and also shows great leadership. She has committed to Florida Atlantic

“Deyshia has been a three-year varsity starter, she has been a great leader for our team this year,” South coach Amanda Ceja-O’Boyle said. “She broke our block record last year with 139 blocks. This year she broke the career blocking stats with 332 our original record was 168. She will be very successful in her future years as a volleyball player.”

Madeline Lubeck Westmont setter had602 assists, 69 kills and 46 aces, leading the Sentinels to the sectional final.

“She ran a 5-1 offense the past two years and was a leader on and off the court,” Westmont coach Jennifer Gilwa-Bell said.

“She has great set selection and was an offensive threat as well.

As a sophomore she ran a 5-1 that resulted in a 28-1 record; the varsity team has had two 20 plus win seasons under her direction, Madeline was the team’s MVP as a junior and was nominated and selected as captain this year.”

Sara Nielsen A junior setter from Benet, Nielsen tallied 883 assists, 38 aces and 190 digs for the sectional champs. She is committed to the University of Minnesota and is 78-4 in her two years as setter.

Don’t forget to plan for travel time

Manage your commute and watch tardiness, anxiety disappear

Do you feel like you’re always running late to appointments and events no matter how hard you try to be on time? Do you frequently lose patience when caught in traffic because you’re rushing to get somewhere? Many of my clients, especially those with ADHD, experience the same frustration.

One common cause of their recurring tardiness is not building travel time into their schedule.

There are sometimes other issues as well, such as being anxious about arriving early and having nothing to

do, but ignoring how long it takes to get somewhere is almost always part of the mix.

So what’s the solution? While it may seem obvious, being cognizant of how long it takes to get somewhere is the first, often-ignored, step. If you’re not good at estimating travel time, use a tool such as an online mapping program (Mapquest, Google Maps, etc.), a mapping app on your phone or a GPS to get you started. If they have real-time updating capability, these tools already take traffic into account. If they don’t automatically update, add extra time as appropriate.

For example, if I’m traveling in morning or evening rush hour (aka “slow hour”) I’ll always add on extra time. I’ve gone so far as to sometimes double the time given to

account for traveling during a heavy traffic time of day. I even add on time to the estimates given by realtime devices, because even they sometimes don’t get it right.

Secondly, allow for parking and walking time at your destination. If you’ll have to search for a parking spot, allow time to find and pay for the spot. If you’ll have to walk a long way from your parking spot to your destination, allow time for that. If you’re going into an office building or highrise, add elevator waiting and transit time.

Next, record the travel time on your calendar (you do have a calendar, right?). If your appointment time is at noon, for example, and you’ve generously estimated it will take a half hour to get there, block off 11:30 a.m. to noon on your calendars so

you can be sure you’ve set aside the right amount of time. Honor the 11:30 timeslot as diligently as you would that noon appointment – make sure you’re out the door when you need to be. And finally, continue to increase your on-time arrival percentage by improving your travel time awareness – pay attention to how long it takes to get places at various times of day. For example, maybe it takes twice as long to get to a particular destination during rush hour as it does during midday (or longer if there are accidents).

Letters are available on the village of Shorewood’s website, http:// vil.shorewood.il.us, and must be received no later than noon Dec. 1.

Letters can be mailed to the village -- Santa, ℅ Village of Shorewood, 1 Towne Center Blvd., Shorewood -or dropped off in person at village hall. Santa will only have time to call children 10 years and younger.

5K Jingle Bell Race. 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. is pre-registration/packet pick-up. 9 a.m. race starts at Bluff Public Golf Club, 19433 Renwick Road, Crest Hill. The Jingle Bell 5K Race is certified and accurately marked and measured. The course features mostly rolling terrain with a few hills on paved roads and fairways, through scenic Prairie Bluff Golf Course. All participants will receive an official 5k race shirt and enjoy the post-race party including chili lunch and cookies.
