I’ve never put on combat boots, shot at an enemy or held a dying friend,” history teacher Terry Piazza told the audience in the packed auditorium. “I have no idea what any of you have experienced. Your fear, your bravery, your suffering, your survival. So today, I am simply a grateful American, and I represent grateful Americans everywhere who do not have the honor of speaking to their heroes on Veterans Day.” The ceremony recognized the

five branches of the armed forces, as the members of the Joliet Central JROTC posted the service flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

The ceremony also made special recognition of the contributions of Hispanic soldiers to the military, including a video created by senior Yessenia Viveros, a JROTC Cadet Captain, which included a tribute to Sator Sanchez, a Joliet area airman who was killed in World War II. Sator Sanchez Elementary School in Joliet was named in his honor.

The ceremony included performances by the Joliet Central Symphonic Band and Concert Choir, as well as a rendition of “Echo Taps” by Juan Guerra and Francisco Patino.

students were each recognized for their service, as Joliet Township Director of Alumni Relations Lynne Lichtenauer paid special thanks to some of the school’s oldest living veterans.

“The stories of the World War II veterans are living history and must be told before they are no longer with us,” Lichtenauer said.

In addition to students, staff and members of the public, the event was also attended by U.S. Congressman Bill Foster, Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, Joliet Councilwoman Jan Quillman, Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman, Illinois state Rep. Metra shutdown averted with PTC-deadline extension Metra trains will continue to run next year after Positive Train Control deadline extended

Metra trains will continue to run next year after Congress voted last month to extend the Positive Train Control deadline.

Under a September 2008 law, all rail transit agencies had to have PTC technology installed on all of their lines by Dec. 31, 2015.

In September, Metra sent a

letter to Congress stating that the agency wouldn’t be able to meet the deadline until 2019.

Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway, which operate Metra’s Union Pacific and BNSF lines, echoed that sentiment. Without the technology in place, Metra would have had to stop running all passenger trains after the December deadline.

On Sept. 30, Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pennsylvania, introduced House

Resolution 3651, which would extend the deadline to Dec. 31, 2018. It would also give the U.S. Secretary of Transportation the authority to extend the deadline by two more years if a transit agency can prove that “technical, programmatic or operational challenges,” such as technology and funding issues prevented it from fully implementing PTC. On Oct. 23, Shuster introduced House Resolution 3819, which included the language from the earlier resolution into a larger package of transportation-related measures.

The law passed the House and Senate, and President Barack Obama signed it Oct. 29.

In a statement to the press, Metra Executive Director Don Orseno said he was grateful that the service shutdown was averted.

“We would like to thank Senators Durbin and Kirk and Representatives Quigley, Lipinski and Dold in particular, as well as the entire Metra congressional delegation, for their unending support during this critical time,” he said.

“As always, Metra remains committed to implementing PTC as quickly and safely as we can.”

Will County recorder to seek re-election Stukel said she would work to streamline operations

Will County Recorder of Deeds Karen Stukel announced she will seek re-election in the November 2016 general election.

“I have enjoyed serving the residents of Will County over the past seven years, and I look forward to continuing to implement new technologies to make our office more accurate and efficient which will move us to the next generation of public recording,” Stukel said in a statement.

According to the release, Stukel implemented a property fraud alert program while recorder of deeds and and her office has started utilizing E-recording, which allows residents and organizations to submit documents for recording electronically.

She said her next major initiative is working with the supervisor of assessments office and the Illinois Department of Revenue to bring electronic deed recording to Will County.

If re-elected, Stukel said she would work to streamline operations within the recorder’s office, maintain a fiscally conservative office and bring forward programs to serve residents’ needs.

Petition packet filing for March general primary begins Nov. 23 The Will County Clerk’s Office announced petition filing dates for candidates running for countywide offices and the Will County County Board.

Filing begins Nov. 23 at 8:30 a.m., and the last day to file petitions is Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. Petitions can be filed in person at or mailed to the Will County Clerk’s Office. Any petitions received in the mail

before Nov. 23 will be returned.

Will County women’s group targets charity goals through novel concept

The concept is a simple one but its results are great.

A new local chapter of 100+ Women Who Care of Will County are banding together by trying to gather 100 women in the area who can donate $100 to a local charity quarterly and, in essence, make the donation level skyrocket.

“When you donate $100 to a charity, you often wonder if you’re actually making a difference,” said founder Maribeth Carlson. “When 100 people donate $100 at the same time, the group accomplishes collectively what few of us could on our own. A $10,000 donation can enable a charity to complete a project or attain a goal that had been out of reach.”

The group began a few months ago and has already doubled its membership, with members joining from Romeoville, Plainfield, Lockport, Mokena, Homer Glen, New Lenox and Frankfort.

However, the group is still looking to grow. Carlson said women interested in joining the group can attend its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at

“Right here in our own backyard there are people in need and we, simply put, can help,” Carlson said. “Will County has so many wonderful local charities who serve our community, but many of them struggle. When I first learned of 100 Women Who Care, I was inspired by the simplicity of the concept.

Knowing how difficult it is for local non-profits to raise the funds required to carry on their work, and how easily even the best volunteer’s intentions can be thwarted by today’s busy schedules, 100 Women Who Care seemed to be the perfect solution.”

As the first member to join the group, Beth Rodgers said she did so because of her belief that people in the community need to get involved in order to make a difference.

“The concept of 100+ allows for me to personally meet the women who are representing and are passionate about their nonprofit charities, and that really does make a difference for me,” said Rodgers.

“I can ask questions and really learn about where my donation is going and how it was used. The process is effortless, the concept is perfect, and the results—well the results

Member Cherie McWherter agrees.

“It is unique in that you are joining together with other women from your community and you are making an impact on a local nonprofit that may never get the publicity that the big charities do,” McWherter said. “Our first two charities were Shady Oaks Camp and Lincolnway Special Recreation Association I have lived in Lockport almost 30 years and while I had heard of Shady Oaks I had no idea what they really did and what their needs were and I had never heard of LWSRA. McWherter said both charities are near and dear to some of the groups members, adding that both do great work in the community and were very appreciative of the money 100+ Women donated.

The group recently made their second donation, presenting a $1,600 check to LWSRA. The association provides special recreation services for individuals with disabilities. Services are

provided through a cooperative agreement with the Frankfort, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, Peotone and Wilmington Island park districts. LWSRA programs are designed for individuals, preschool through adult, who have recreation needs that are not met by regular park district programs.

“LWSRA is honored and very grateful to the 100+ Women Who Care of Will County for their donation,” said Keith Wallace, executive director of LWSRA. “We will apply this donation to our scholarship fund for those individuals who are in need of financial help to participate in our programs. Last year, we gave out over $12,000 in scholarship funds to our participants in need. Thank you again to the 100+ Women members who chose to support LWSRA.” All 100+ Women members and teams make a pledge to donate $100 four times a year. At meetings, members nominate charities, three are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation, the members vote on which charity to support. Once the winning charity is announced, everyone writes a

$100 check on the spot directly for that charity. All charities nominated must be located in, and serve, Will County and must have 501(c)(3) non­profit status.

“I love the fact that you get to vote on a charity that is presented by a member,” McWherter said. “That just gives it such a personal touch, more than giving to the Red Cross or some huge organization like that.

We have the opportunity to really make a difference to small local charities in our neighborhood.

She added that the personal donation is not that large but can make a significant impact when grouped together with others.

“In just two meetings we more than doubled our contribution,” McWherter said. “I can’t wait to see what November holds, and I can’t wait until the day that we donate $10,000!

“It’s great for women that want to help out locally but realistically just don’t have a lot of extra time to do that. I predict big things for 100+ Women Who Care in Will County.”

State’s attorney to review possible ethics violations by Joliet councilman Potential violations of state or federal laws

by Councilman At Large Jim McFarland The city of Joliet announced Nov. 3 that the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office will review potential violations of state or federal laws by Councilman At Large Jim McFarland.

According to the city, McFarland requested city envelopes with his

name as city councilman on the corner from the city manager’s office in early October. The city said the request is an ordinary accommodation provided to the mayor and council, but added that any provided stationery is to be used specifically for city business.

That specific use is required in the City Ethics Ordinance and incorporated into the recent Rules of Conduct adopted by the City Council.

The city said McFarland sent correspondence found to be unrelated to city business to Joliet residents using city envelopes, which were returned to the city as undeliverable. Subsequent to that mailing, the city said it

became aware that McFarland sent additional mailings unrelated to city business utilizing the city

envelopes with a flyer specifically stating that they were paid for by him or his campaign funds.

Man convicted of being armed habitual criminal Jury deliberated for two hours before finding Derek Webb guilty A Joliet man is facing between six and 30 years in prison after being found guilty of weapons offenses Thursday, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

before finding Derek Webb, 35, guilty of one count of being an armed habitual criminal and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

charge, a Class X felony, and the unlawful use of a weapon charge, a Class 2 felony, both allege that Webb was in possession of a .38-caliber handgun after having been convicted of two prior aggravated batteries, one in 2006 and the other in 2004.

With attention to women’s issues and gender-based inequality becoming more prominent in the last few years, many of us have asked the question: Is there still a wage gap between men and women?

Despite the fact that I am a woman, and so have my own biases toward the question, it is clear to me that the answer is yes – the wage gap is not a myth.

Some have argued that because women tend to take time off for raising children and pregnancy, the difference in compensation is justifiable. Others point to the belief that women aren’t as aggressive as their male counterparts when negotiating salaries.

According to an article by Harvard Business Review, research shows that women are more reticent than men to negotiate their salary offers.

The article states that this reticence is based on an accurate read of the social environment.

“Women get a nervous feeling about negotiating for higher pay because they are intuiting – correctly – that self-advocating for higher pay would present a socially difficult situation for them – more so than for men.”

These are just some of the arguments that I’ve heard time and time again when the topic of equal pay between men and women is brought up.

To be clear, I’m not talking about the

wage gap between a woman who has only worked, say, five years and a man who’s worked 15. This example of a difference in pay is presumably based on experience and should be factored into hiring decisions. I’m talking about situations where a man and a woman with the same education and applying for the same position, yet the male employee is much more likely to be paid more.

The wage gap is a large area of concern for feminists because it’s an issue that has gone on for decades and received little redress. In a Time Magazine article from August, the author, Kerri Anne Renzulli, points out that some studies don’t take into consideration the fact that women do take more time off from work due to pregnancy and child care or that women tend to go into lower-paying fields. However, Renzulli notes that the gap still wouldn’t disappear completely. “You still wouldn’t get to zero.”

The gap would shrink to about 93 to 95 cents for white women, according to the article. Without this adjustment, statistics show that women make about 77 cents to every dollar a man makes.

And while the gap has narrowed since the 1970s, it does still exist – despite those who argue against to the contrary.

The gap is even larger for women of color. According to a study done by the American Association of University Women, Hispanic women were only paid 54 percent of a white man’s

earnings in 2014. African American women were paid 63 percent, and white women were paid 78 percent of a white man’s earnings.

Even when all factors are equal, compensation is not. A 2014 study from the U.S. Department of Labor showed that there is still a 7 percent discrepancy between men and women with equal educations and the same career choices. Additionally, the gap increases as women age. On average, women under 35, or “millenials,” earn 90 percent of what men their age earn.

When education and career choice are the exact same, the wage gap still exists. And while it is clear that pay discrimination is a problem and steps have been taken to address it, why do women still find they are taking home less than male colleagues?

According to the National Organization for Women, the wage gap is not expected to close until 2058 at the current rate of increase. That means 2015 high school graduates will be 61 before they can expect equal pay.

During President Obama’s 2014 state of the union address, he expressed his own feelings on the gender wage gap. “I firmly believe when women succeed, America succeeds,” Obama said. “Today, women make up about half of our workforce, but they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, that is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment.”

Later in 2014, on Equal Pay Day, President Obama signed two executive orders intended to narrow the gap between wages for different genders.

During his remarks at the event, Obama said on the gender gap, “It’s not a myth; it’s math.”

Well put, Mr. President.

Rauner’s amendatory veto strips away 24-hour skilled medical care and replaces it with a few hours a week of housekeeping chores. This move is strictly about money and politics, and not about the care needs of elderly people. With one pen stroke, elderly people and their families lost the right to choose the best health care setting based on their individual health care

needs and family circumstances.

The Health Care Council of Illinois calls on members of the General Assembly to override this Amendatory Veto and uphold dignified medical care for our most vulnerable citizens.

Senior must be nominated by the leader of an organization

Three Lockport residents are among the recipients of Congressman Dan Lipinski’s 2015 Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Edie Krupinski, Jack Picciolo and Phil Rittenhouse were among the award winners, which were announced recently during a special program in Hickory Hills. The

winners were chosen based on their contributions to their communities in the Third Congressional District.

“These individuals demonstrate on a daily basis the outstanding spirit and commitment that exists in all of our communities,” Lipinski said in a news release. “I am honored to recognize these seniors who have selflessly donated their time and energy to causes and pursuits that teach us all the value of service.”

To be eligible for this award, a senior must be nominated by the leader of an organization or an official from their community.

NHS service day helps feed the hungry Group packaged 19,272 pounds of food, which will help feed 77,088 people National Honor Society students at Lockport Township High School participated in an annual service day Oct. 21 at the Northern Illinois Food bank.

The NHS students spent three hours labeling and packaging canned corn to be put into meal boxes to feed the hungry.

These board members, along

with NHS board members from other schools in the Southwest Suburban Conference, packaged 19,272 pounds of food, which will help feed 77,088 people.

Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Commended students are recognized for their “outstanding academic promise,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Program website, and are “named

on the basis of a nationally applied selection index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named semifinalists in their respective states.”

Although Dulski and Hoff will not continue in the competition, some commended students will become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Around 1,200 special scholarships are awarded each year.

state champions Minooka girls win IHSA Class 3A state cross country title

PEORIA – In the beginning of the season, the Minooka girls cross country team had a goal to earn a state trophy.

Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria, they achieved it – and then some.

The Indians didn’t just get a state trophy, they got the top state trophy as they scored 132 points to win the Class 3A state championship.

Ashley Tutt led the way, placing fourth overall in 16 minutes, 36 seconds.

“This is really exciting,” Tutt said. “We had a goal and I just went out there and did my best.

This feels awesome. I am so proud of these girls. We came in just wanting a trophy and we ended up getting first, it is indescribable. We knew we wanted to make history for our school.”

Emily Shelton was the second through the chute for Minooka, finishing 19th in 16:59.

“I had tears of joy,” Shelton said. “We have worked super hard this season, harder than I ever worked and to see it pay off was great.”

Mackenzie Callahan was also All-State, playing 20th in 17:03.

“We really wanted to do well as team and even though I was hurting out there, I kept thinking every place matters,” she said. “I

put my full effort into that last straight away.”

Also scoring for Minooka were Morgan Crouch (60th, 17:47) and Vivian Van Eck (66th, 17:51).

“When I was a freshman I was the top runner on the team, but the team wasn’t as strong and it took so much just to crack the top 20,” she said. “I remember then telling coach (Kevin) Gummerson that I would rather be the seventh runner on an amazing team than the first runner on a team that doesn’t act like one. On this team, everyone cares so much about each other.

I am so happy I got this my senior year. I couldn’t ask for it to end in a better way. This was 18 minutes of pain for an eternity of happiness.”

While Crouch ends her career a champion, Van Eck begins hers that way.

“It was exciting,” she said. “I knew every place mattered. This is crazy.”

Emily Ellis (175th, 18:52) and Katelyn Gall (188th, 19:00) also competed, but did not score.

Lockport’s team finished 17th with 364 points.

The Porters were paced by Morgan Bollinger, who was 35th in 17:31. She was followed

by Karlee Stortz (55th, 17:44), Aubrey Friedrich (102nd, 18:12), Alicia Ary (126th, 18:26) and Jorie Beaumont (144th, 18:36). Emily Stoklosa (152nd, 18:40) and Kate

Angels headed back to state

In the postseason, experience tends to pay off.

That was the case for Joliet Catholic as it won its ninth sectional title in 13 years Thursday in a 25-23, 27-25 win over Morris in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional final.

“I think it was a big thing,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said.

“We had so many girls competed down at state last year and have the experience of playing in close games and in front of big crowds like this. They are fighters and competitors and know how to win. We’ve been here before and we can do it again.”

“It has helped a lot,” senior libero Meghan Harrison said. “I think all of our starters were on the team last year. We know what state feels like and the hunger we have now to go back to state and finish the job.”

That win propelled them to the

super sectional championship where they beat De La Salle 2512, 25-15 in their quest to win state after placing second last year.

“It is amazing,” Harrison said. “We talked the first day of summer camp in July that we would win state this year. We had a little rough patch in the middle, but we knew we are a playoff program.”

“It is amazing,” senior outside Megan Cladis said. “Last year we came up a little bit short and this year we just want to win it. We want to win so bad and we are just one step away.”

They almost never made it to the supersectional as the Angels trailed 13-6 in the first set and 19-15 in the second set before mounting rallies.

“Throughout the whole year we’ve been coming back,” Cladis said. “So I was never doubting us. I knew could come back.”

“Our thing all year has been to start off a little slow and then

come back,” Harrison said. “We kicked it into gear and came back. We told ourselves after the first game that we weren’t going three.”

A big key to the comeback was the tip play. There was an opening behind the Redskin blockers and JCA consistently took advantage of it.

“We noticed from watching film that was an opening,” Scheibe said. “Our outside hitters weren’t necessarily on swinging tonight, so we said to go with the tip. It worked a couple times and we told them keep doing it until they stop it. We’ll take whatever comes our way. We don’t have to pound the ball to win.”

“Our coaches said they were pulling back,” Cladis said.

Indians eliminated in sectional final

It doesn’t take much to start a rivalry.

To build one takes time and that is exactly what Joliet West and Minooka will have beginning next season when West moves into the Southwest Prairie Conference to join Minooka.

The two teams being in the same league will give the rivalry the time needed to grow, but the start of it was last week when the Indians clipped the Tigers in three sets 25-23, 19-25, 25-19 in the opener of the Lincoln-Way North Sectional.

“At our all conference meeting, we were talking about how we were matching up with them in the sectional and they are coming to our conference next year,” said Minooka coach Carrie Prosek. “That’s good, though, I like having tough competition in the conference.”

What is also there is the respect programs must have for each other to have a rivalry that will live on.

“Al (Mart) is a great coach and (Joliet West) is a great team,” Prosek said. “They are an awesome team and they had a phenomenal season, you can’t say any different. It is hard playing a team again when you beat them earlier and a lot of the girls on both teams are friends.”

“They are a good team,” Mart said. “It is tough when they have big kids like that who can put the ball down and they scrapped on defense and had some big digs and kept balls alive. They went out and won game three, it’s not like we went out and lost it. I thought last time we played they really handed it to us, this time

West’s Lauren Stefanski led both teams with 14 kills, while Lauren Widlowski tallied three of the 10 West aces, while Shannon Doran tallied 23 assists.

“We didn’t play our best, not everything was working, not everything was clicking, but a win is a win,” Perinar said. “When the skill isn’t there, we just have great players. We are athletes.”

The road ended for Minooka in the sectional final with a loss to

the host Phoenix 25-19, 25-16.

Perinar tallied six kills and five digs, while Papesh added seven kills. Bachmann had 15 assists.

“Lincoln-Way played great defensively and offensively and was the best team we were matched with all year,” Prosek said. “We had a great season and built up our confidence and look forward to continuing with this tradition for many more years to

come. We were very young and will miss our four senior leaders, who did an amazing job on and off the court to help build this season up to the success that we had.”

With a young team and a new coach, it was unclear if the Indians (28-11) would make it that far at the beginning of the season.

“We started off the season pretty slow,” Prosek said. “But it was

getting adjusted to me and to my things and our goal was always to be here. They play for each other, they play for the coaches, they play for the school. It is amazing because at the beginning of the year, I thought they were going to crack and J just told them to believe me, we were going to get there. Now, they know me and we can continue in our summer camps.”

On the boys side, Minooka placed 16th with 397 points Soren Knudsen was All-State, placing 11th in 14:36. He was followed by Miguel Lomeli (87th, 15:25), Justin Tutt (112, 15:32), Jack Sullivan (139th, 15:47) and Cody Hoshell (145th, 15:50).

Jordan Freese (179th, 16:14) and Ethan Milles (190th, 16:19) also

competed and did not score.

Joliet Central also competed at the state meet as a team, taking 25th place with 618 points.

Raul Rosendo led the Steelmen with a 81st place finish in 15:22. Other scorers were Andre Martinez (150th, 15:52), Vicente Moreno (164th, 16:00), David Carter (178th, 16:13)and Oscar Tejeda (185th, 16:17).

Nick Rios (203rd, 16:49) and Francisco Saenz (206th, 17:08) also competed.

Wojcikiewicz (176th, 18:52) also competed for the Porters.
