Soldier retires after 26 years with National Guard Job Corps restores

George Pohlman, of Lockport, honored during Oct. 17 ceremony at Camp Lincoln After more than 26 years of military service, Lt. Col. George Pohlman, of Lockport, is retiring from the Illinois National Guard.

Pohlman’s service officially ended Oct. 31, but family, friends and fellow service members gathered to honor him during a retirement ceremony at Camp Lincoln in Springfield Oct. 17.

Most recently, Pohlman served as the executive officer of the Illinois National Guard’s 65th Troop Command Brigade based in Springfield.

Pohlman said he is grateful for the opportunity to have served his nation during his time with the Illinois National Guard.

“I owe a great portion of my success, both personally and professionally to the National Guard,” he said. “I appreciate the good order, the discipline and the honor of serving. There are a lot of people in the country who would love that option and having done that is something I will always cherish.”

The commander of the 65th Troop Command Brigade, Col. Michael Glisson, said Pohlman’s hard work and dedication will be missed by everyone he worked with.

“He’s brought a lot of tenacity and a lot of enthusiasm to everything he and I have worked

on and he’s always brought a lot of energy to whatever project he’s tackling,” Glisson said. “He has always been well grounded, with a high level of maturity and has always been a great guy to work with.”

Glisson also said Pohlman would be able to spend more time with his family and the focus on his full-time job as an educator in the Chicago area.

Pohlman joked about getting to work on a 26-year-long list of tasks for his wife, Debra, but she said their future plans include much more relaxing endeavors.

“My father gave him a motorcycle for his years of service so we’ve been doing a lot of riding,” she said. “He had one many moons ago and it’s all he ever talks about so we will definitely continue with the riding.”

However, Debra added that she too would miss the camaraderie of their military family.

“I have enjoyed the military aspect of our life together, so I feel like I’m losing a part of my family,” she said. “I will miss the weekends I was able to go with him and experience the military traditions and meet the honorable men and women who are serving our country. However, I will definitely enjoy getting to spend more time with him.”

city’s rain garden Rain gardens help prevent flooding A group of students from the Joliet Job Corps recently spent some time sprucing up a different kind of garden.

Joliet’s rain garden, 900 Westwood Ave., is located in the middle of a suburban neighborhood on the west side of town. These unique gardens are created in shallow, lowlying areas and are filled with native plants and grasses with deep roots, according to the Chicago-based Rain Garden Network.

What makes rain gardens unique and integral to urban landscapes, however, is their ability to help prevent flooding.

Lisa Dorothy, the City of Joliet’s engineer, said the Westwood Avenue rain garden was planted in 2010, and Joliet Job Corps students have been involved with the project since its inception. Dorothy said she appreciated their assistance.

“Joliet Job Corps students’ participation has been integral to the success of the ongoing maintenance of the rain garden,” Dorothy said.

In addition to helping mitigate flooding, the garden is filled with plants that actually filter and clean stormwater gathered from approximately 12 nearby city blocks. Dorothy said the water flows into the Des Plaines River at the end of the process.

“That site is unique because the storm sewer from the north flows across the lot and then drains at the back of the property,” she said, adding that two homes to the south of the rain garden used to have frequent flooding issues.

That doesn’t happen today.

“Very little water actually leaves the site now,” Dorothy said.

The Fourth Avenue railroad viaduct between Chicago Street and Eastern Avenue will be closed for bridge work starting Oct. 30, according to a press release from the city of Joliet.

The closure is part of the Union Pacific Railroad’s work on the Heritage Corridor railroad bridges near the Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus. The city said it expects Fourth Avenue to reopen by the end of November.

Additionally, Fifth Avenue

remains closed between Eastern Avenue and Gardner Street. Detour routes will be posted, but the city is advising commuters to exercise caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area. Fifth Avenue is also expected to reopen by the end of the month.

The city added that Fourth Avenue will have new turning restrictions at its intersection with Eastern Avenue after it reopens. Due to compromised visibility around the new bridge pier, southbound Eastern Avenue will become a right turn only lane. No left turns onto Eastern will be allowed.

Joliet Central to hold 5th annual Veterans Ceremony Several Vietnam veterans will be honored at the ceremony Attend the Event On Nov. 6, Joliet Central High School will honor area veterans as well as recognize men and women currently serving in the armed forces at its fifth annual Veterans Ceremony.

2016 dog park permits on sale Annual fees begin at $40 for one dog Forest Preserve District of Will County dog parks permits for calendar year 2016 are now available for purchase.

A provision that is new for 2016 allows people to buy permits for dogs they are fostering. Foster dog permits can be transferred to another dog should the original dog be adopted.

Dog park permits can be purchased at three visitor centers starting Nov. 1: Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher and Monee Reservoir in Monee. Permits also will be available at Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet beginning Nov. 2. Applicants can

register a maximum of three dogs.

Permits allow year-round access to all five Forest Preserve District dog parks: Forked Creek in Wilmington, Hammel Woods in Shorewood, Messenger Marsh in Homer Glen, Whalon Lake in Naperville and Rock Run in Joliet. Dog parks are open 8 a.m. to sunset with one exception: Whalon Lake Dog Park is open from 6 a.m. to sunset from April through October.

Annual dog park fees begin at $40 for one dog for Will County residents and $80 for nonresidents. Senior citizen and multi-dog discounts are available. Annual permits are valid through Dec. 31, 2016. Half-year permits are available for purchase starting July 1, and daily dog park permits also can be purchased for $5 per dog.

Forest Preserve receives funds for pedestrian bridges Black Road Project to create safe paths across I-55, DuPage River Walkers, runners and bicyclists in Joliet and Shorewood could soon have a safer route across Interstate 55.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County announced last week that it will receive a second federal grant to help pay for the construction of two pedestrian bridges and trail connections along Black Road. The goal of the project is to create safe paths across I-55 and the DuPage River for pedestrian commuters traveling between the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Joliet and the DuPage River Trail in Shorewood.

In 2014, the Will County Forest Preserve received a $963,200 grant from the federally funded Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. That grant is being used to pay for engineering for the entire Black Road project and construction of Segment 1, which includes a 300-foot bridge over I-55 for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as new asphalt trail segments.

Phase I engineering for the $3.3 million Black Road project is due to be completed

by November, and completion of Phase II engineering is expected by August 2016.

On Oct. 14, the Federal Highway Administration – a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation – announced that the forest preserve would receive a $1.6 million grant through the FHA’s Transportation Alternatives Program.

The forest preserve said this second grant would be used to construct Segment 2 of the project, which includes a 260foot bridge over the DuPage River and a new trail connection on the south side of Black Road.

Phase I engineering for the $3.3 million Black Road project is due to be completed by November, and completion of Phase II engineering is expected

by August 2016. The forest preserve said it plans to seek bids for construction of the bridges and trail extensions in November 2016, with construction expected to begin in 2017 and completed in 2018.

Bolingbrook man Man sentenced to 57 years for fatal guilty of attempting shooting outside Joliet boxing club to support ISIL Crest Hill 18-year-old killed during 2011 shooting A Lockport Township man was sentenced to 57 years in prison for a fatal shooting that occurred outside a Joliet boxing club in 2011, according to a release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Jevon Lesley, 22, was found guilty of first-degree murder in June for the shooting death of Anthony Fearn, an 18-year-old Crest Hill resident. Lesley faced a sentence of 45 years to life in prison. On Wednesday, circuit judge Sarah Jones handed down the sentence.

“Jevon Lesley demonstrated a ruthless disregard for the

sanctity of human life when he opened fire and gunned down an innocent young man outside the crowded boxing club on that summer night,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “The prison sentence secured by my prosecutors removes this dangerous killer from our community.”

Fearn, an innocent bystander who had no connection to any street gang, attended a party at the club earlier in the evening with a friend. A bullet struck Fearn in the left arm and lodged in his chest, nicking both his lung and his trachea. He was shot outside a minivan before he could climb into the vehicle to flee from the gunfire, according to the state’s attorney.

During the four-day trial, prosecutors secured testimony from five witnesses who identified Lesley, know on the streets as Guru, as the shooter.

A Bolingbrook man pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge of attempting to travel overseas in order to join the Islamic State terrorist group.

Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The organization is identified in a written plea agreement as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Khan, a U.S. citizen from southwest suburban Bolingbrook, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr. did not immediately

Khan has been detained in federal custody since he was arrested Oct. 4, 2014, at O’Hare International Airport by members of the Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force.

According to the plea agreement, Khan began using the Internet no later than February 2014 to obtain introductions to ISIL members in Syria and assistance with traveling there to join the terrorist group.

The plea agreement states that Khan spoke with ISIL members to coordinate the logistics of his admission into ISIL-controlled territory. Khan admitted in the plea agreement that he knew ISIL had been designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization.

Upon arriving in Syria, Khan intended to work under the direction and control of ISIL and be required to take any assignment ISIL gave him, according to the plea agreement.

The guilty plea was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; John P. Carlin, ssistant Attorney General for National Security; and Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the FBI. The Joint Terrorism Task Force is comprised of Special Agents of the FBI, officers of the Chicago Police Department, and representatives from an additional 20 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations and the Illinois State Police also provided significant assistance in the investigation.

In October, we celebrated National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time for us to learn about the many and varied contributions of workers with disabilities; a time to focus on an individual’s abilities and gifts; and a time when we educate our communities about how companies should see us as special voices individuals who with Daniel bring our individual Smrokowski skills and gifts to the workplace.

Take for example, one of my employers — this newspaper. In January 2014, the Bugle hired me as both a freelance reporter and a columnist. They recognized my skills as a journalist and didn’t see my disabilities as a barrier. This is one of many recent companies who are acknowledging how those of us with special needs can contribute to the workplace.

This year marks the 70th anniversary since the first observance of the National Disability Employment Awareness Month in 1945. The theme for this year is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy. In celebration of this year’s theme, it’s vital that employers recognize that our disabilities are just one part of who we are. Employers need to learn about the various skills and gifts that we can offer the workforce.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to go on a job interview at a local video retail store. I was able to get this job interview because of being a client at the Helping Hand Center, a local agency that benefits children and adults with disabilities. After I received a phone call from the store’s manager, I called the community job placement coordinator at the Helping Hand Center. An hour before the job interview, we met at a nearby cafe to practice some mock interview questions.

This past summer, “The Shriver Report Snapshot: Insight Into Intellectual Disabilities in the 21st

Century” reported that only 56 percent of Americans personally know someone with an intellectual disability, while 42 percent of Americans have no personal contact with a person with an intellectual disability. It was in partnership that The Shriver Report and Special Olympics launched a new challenge called “PLAY - Let’s Change The Game.” Its mission is to encourage all people to play, learn, accept and say “yes” together. The goal is to change the world to have common ground among people of all abilities.

Similar to the new Let’s Change The Game campaign, the Best Buddies organization has a campaign to hire people with special needs. “I’m In To Hire” is Best Buddies’ new campaign that promotes the business benefits of hiring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to the campaign’s website. I’m In To Hire motivates employers to create a more inclusive workplace.

This campaign was founded by Best Buddies International and supported by the Institute for Corporate Productivity. The I’m In To Hire campaign helps to unify the voices of employers and employees alike in support of hiring those of us with special needs. The campaign notes that 85 percent of people with developmental disabilities do not have a paid community job. The campaign aspires to change the world to see the value that we bring to the workforce.

Similar to the I’m In To Hire campaign, my goal through this column and through the podcasts at Special Chronicles, is to unify the voices of those of us with special needs so the world can better understand the abilities that we do have.

According to the National Core Indicators from 2012-13, intellectual and developmental disabilities include but are not limited to Down syndrome, Autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other undiagnosed intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The #ImInToHire campaign reports that 73 percent of business who hire employees with special needs have a positive experience.

Anyone can pledge their support of the #ImInToHire campaign at www.

imintohire.org. In doing so, you will not only be spreading awareness but you’ll also be recognizing the contributions that all of us can bring to an inclusive workplace.

At another of my recent employers, my supervisors and coworkers had a positive experience. Some of those who I worked with had experience working with those of us with special needs. At the same time, some may not have had the best understanding of the gifts that we bring to the workplace.

A few months ago, a coworker approached me and shared how they felt sorry that my friends and I had special needs. In an effort not to judge this coworker, the person might not yet have a good understanding of how to work with someone who has special needs. In another incident, this same coworker had spoken up for me when some other coworkers were seen making fun of me because I had special needs. This worker had recognized this unfair treatment of me and approached our supervisor.

Perhaps by having me in this workplace, I touched this coworker’s heart and opened their mind.

Companies should hire those of us with special needs not just for charity but because it’s the right decision.

We are individuals who each bring our individual gifts and skills to the workplace.

One of my dreams here at Special Chronicles, a pioneering nonprofit new media company, is to help create a more inclusive workplace. One can acquire many valuable skills here at Special Chronicles. One can attain skills in interviewing, communication, journalism and broadcasting. One can also learn how to motivate and inspire others. At any and all places of work, we can show the world how every person with special needs brings individual gifts and skills to organizations.

JTHS students recognized for outstanding AP Exam scores Ninety-eight Joliet Township High School students were recognized at the Oct. 20 Board of Education meeting for their outstanding academic performance on the 2015 Advanced Placement Exam.

Those honored scored a 4 or 5 on an Advanced Placement test during the 2014-15 school year.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both.

Over the past six years, JTHS has increased the number of students taking AP courses and exams by more than 200 percent, while increasing the amount of students scoring 3 or higher on the AP exam.

“Students who earn AP Exam scores of 3 or above are generally considered to be qualified to receive college credit and/or placement into advanced courses due to the fact that their AP Exam scores are equivalent to a college course score of ‘middle C’ or above,” Joliet Central High School Principal Shad Hallihan said. “More than 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores. By entering college with AP credits, students often save money and typically have the time to move into upper level courses, pursue a double-major or study abroad.”

William B. Orenic students wrote letters to troops as part of the project Fifth grade students in William B. Orenic Intermediate School’s Citizenship through Community Service class took a service project field trip in October to Operation Care Package in Manhattan.

In preparation for the trip,

the students wrote letters to the troops, produced and showed a video to the rest of the school to encourage other students to write letters, made their own website for the project, made “Support our Troops” pins, collected care package items, and decorated pillow cases and boxes to send to the service troops.

While at Operation Care Package, the students also packed and taped boxes, sorted decks of cards to send, made an assembly line to move 200 boxes

of cookies and organized snack bags, hygiene bags and soup/fruit bags. They also learned about the organization and about the impact of their service.

Other service projects Troy Community School District 30-C’s Citizenship through Community Service classes are doing this fall include a book drive for preschool children through Child Care Resource and Referral and making “dog starter kits” to give to new pet owners through Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue.

Board member talks civics with area students

Ragan Freitag discusses voting process, elections at Joliet elementary school Will County Board member Ragan Freitag recently visited with third grade students at Forest Park Individual Education School in Joliet to share her experiences and answer questions about the voting process and elections.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to encourage young

people to get involved in their community and participate in civic groups like student council because their voices and choices absolutely matter,” Freitag said in a news release. “One day we will look to them to run for city council, county board, and even president of the United States.”

Freitag spoke with Ms. Annie Henschen’s third grade glass about a variety of topics, including petition signing, how candidates campaign, the voting process, and bipartisanship. Freitag’s visit coincided with the class learning about elections and the democratic system of government.

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots provided Freitag with sample ballots, magnets and stickers to give to the students.

Round 2 ESCC rivals clash again in round 2 of Class 5A playoffs

In movies it is rare that a sequal is better than the original.

In sports, however, that is often the case.

Well, a sequal is what will happen at 1 p.m. Saturday at Joliet’s Memorial Stadium when Joliet Catholic Academy hosts East Suburban Catholic Conference opponent Marian in the second round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs. Marian is coached by former Hilltopper standout and Joliet Central coach Mike Maloney.

Both teams advanced by winning their respective round one games. Marian defeated Belvidere 41-7, while JCA beat Vernon Hills 48-29.

“It’s going to be chippy,” said JCA defensive back Riley O’Donnell. “I am expecting a good game. They are going to come out and give it their best shot, but we will be ready.”

For JCA, the final score of the game does not reflect the true tenor of the game.

After trailing 7-6 in the first quarter, the Hilltoppers scored 28 points in the second quarter and opened up a 48-7 lead on the Cougars before Vernon Hills tacked on 22 points after the running clock was implemented.

“If you take the first half of the first quarter and the fourth

quarter away, I thought we played pretty good,” Sharp said.

“I didn’t like our start.”

Sophomore Ke’Von Johnson accounted for three JCA scores, as he rushed eight times for 130 yards and a pair of TDs. He also caught an 11-yard scoring pass from quarterback Cade Earl who was hit 9 of 14 for 201 yards, one TD and one interception.

“They were showing a nineman front, so we knew we needed to throw and Cade did a great job,” Sharp said. “I thought Cade and the whole passing game were very good today. That really opens it up for the runners.”

Michael Johnson led the JCA three-headed rushing attack as he carried the ball 17 times for 140 yards and three rushing scores (5, 50 and 14 yards), while Harry Davis had five carries for 47 yards and a TD. Davis also hauled in four passes for 120 yards.

Vernon Hills quarterback Connor McNamara put the ball in the air 54 times, completing 35 of those passes to his own receivers. He also had two more caught by JCA cornerback O’Donnell.

“All season I have been so close to making a play and I got my chance today,” O’Donnell said.

“I had a shot on one and I just missed it and I told myself I had to come back and make a play.

West claims regional title for first time since 1989

As the Joliet West girls volleyball team left for the busses to head to Homewood-Flossmoor High School for the IHSA Class 4A Regional match with Lincoln-Way Central, senior Lauren Stefanski said they noticed an unused space on the Wall of Fame right next to the boys regional championship photo.

“The boys won their regional and we wanted to win ours,” she said.

“Right before we left, we saw a big spot on the wall next to their picture and said ‘Maybe we should fill that.’

We did it today.”

The Tigers defeated the Knights 25-23, 29-27 to claim West’s first girls regional volleyball title since 1989 and the first for Joliet Township since 2006.

It was Stefanski who stepped to the service line in game two with West trailing 19-12 and momentum clearly in Central’s favor and served four straight aces, five points total, to get the Tigers back in the match.

“It was so much pressure and I wanted it so bad,” she said of the serve. “I really wanted to get those aces and get those points and get us back in the game. We had to dig deep and claw our way out.”

West coach Al Mart knew his leader had to make the big plays.

“She didn’t play as well as she would have liked at the net, but when it came down to it, she really stepped up and made some plays,” he said. “She has had the serve in her all year and she got on a nice run. That is what you want from your senior captain. That is what you need. You need your big time players to step up and their kid (Toni Leitshuh) did that for them and when it was Lauren’s time she did it.”

Lauren Stefanski and Joliet West won the regional title. and eight kills on the night, served the final two match points to give West the win.

It was the 30th win of the season for the Tigers, who were 3-27 in 2010, the first season after the split of the Joliet athletic programs.

The Tigers faced off against Minooka in the Lincoln-Way North Sectional Tuesday, something that had been the goal all season.

“The plan from the beginning was to win regional so we could move on and get to sectional,” Stefanski said.

That plan looked like a pipe dream during a rough patch for West at the end of the season, but they righted the ship at the right time.

“There was a lot of emotion,” Mart said. “I don’t know if you want to say there was a lot of pressure on us, but we hadn’t played well the last week. We have talked all year about getting to this point. We had talked all year about getting your picture on the wall. I told them all that is something they can never take away from you. The girls laugh all the time at my picture on the wall back when I had long hair and I told them, now they can bring their kids back here and look at that.

“I wanted this so bad for these kids and these seniors because I told them I don’t think they understand that you just don’t get these opportunities very often.”

Minooka wins SPC rematch for regional crown

In a game that was better destined for a sectional championship rather than a regional championship, No. 6 seed Minooka bested No. 3 seed Plainfield Central 25-22, 25-22 Thursday in the Lockport Regional championship.

Central entered play 26-10 and Minooka 21-9, both against a tough schedule and thought they should be seeded higher.

“We feel like we proved ourselves on where we should have been seeded,” Minooka senior Ginger Perinar said. “We showed how good of a team we

are and I’m just excited to see where we go from here. It’s a great feeling.”

“I was very upset with it,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “I felt that Plainfield Central should be in the top two or three and when we had to end up seeing them, it was unfortunate because you had two very good teams.

They could have won a regional as well. Honestly, I feel that is where all the pressure was today because everywhere you looked, this was said it was the game of the sectional. It really was. They played out of their minds and we did, too. So, at first I was mad, but then I thought that if that is what teams think of us, we will just have to prove them wrong.”

They split their season series, with Minooka winning the most recent contest, but the Wildcats won the Southwest Prairie Conference title.

“This is one of the best feelings ever,” Perinar said. “Some people were bragging about winning conference and we’ll give them conference, we will take regionals.

It is an amazing feeling, I can’t describe it It was nice going 1-1 with each other because you didn’t know how it was going to turn out. It made things that much more interesting. It was such a great game and both teams played amazing. It is always fun playing that team.”

Minooka leads area state cross country qualifiers

The weather conditions Saturday were no walk in the park during the IHSA sectional cross country meets across the state, but that was fine, because walking was the last thing on their minds.

Local runners attacked the courses and braved the elements for a shot at advancing to the state finals next week at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The Joliet area will be well represented, as Minooka claimed the Normal Sectional titles on both the boys and girls teams.

On the girls side, all five scorers placed in the top 10, led by champion Ashley Tutt in 17 minutes, 20 seconds.

Emily Shelton was second in 17:28, while Mackenzie Callahan was third in 17:59. Vivian Van Eck placed sixth in 18:23, while Morgan Crouch placed eighth in 18:40.

Emily Ellis was 25th in 19:23 and Katelyn Gall was 28th in 19:25.

Joliet West’s Maddie Blaauw placed fifth in 18:23, while Kiersten

Perry was 14th in 18:52.

At the Hinsdale Central Sectional, Lockport placed second.

Karlee Stortz (6th, 18:21), Morgan Bollinger (11th, 18:37), Aubrey Friedrich (18th, 18:47), Kate Wojcikiewicz (20th, 18:49) and Alicia Ary (29th, 19:07) also scored.

Jorie Beaumont (33rd, 19:18) and Emily Stoklosa (41st, 19:41) also competed for the Porters.

•The Minooka boys won the title with 93 points over O’Fallon (101) and Illiana Christian (107).

Junior Soren Knudsen won the race in 15:17. He was followed by scorers Miguel Lomeli (7th, 15:52), Justin Tutt (18th, 16:06), Jack Sullivan (29th, 16:15) and Jordan Freese (38th, 16:30).

Joliet Central also advanced, placing fifth (128). Raul Rosendo led the Steelmen, placing ninth in 15:53, followed by Andre Martinez (17th, 16:06), Vicente Moreno (25th, 16:12), David Carter (37th, 16:30) and Oscar Tejeda (40th, 16:31). Francisco Saenz (81st, 17:12) and Nick Rios (102nd, 17:50) also scored.

Joliet West’s Mario Scarcelli advanced as an individual finishing 13th in 16:02.

At the end of the day though the Indians have a lot of height and a lot of options on the outside, which did in the Wildcats.

“Our offense is well-rounded,” Perinar said. “We have a lot of good hitters. When the middles fake out the blockers, it makes it that much easier for the outsides to put the ball away. It is a team effort. We play together as a team and wanted it so bad.”

“We went in and really mixed up our shots,” Papesh said. “We went to see what is open on their side of the court and that is

Central led the first set 13-9, but Minooka rallied to take a 1918 lead. Central took two more leads, the last at 21-20, but three hitting errors led to the Indians’ win.

In the second set it was the Indians jumping out fast as they held a 16-10 advantage before the Wildcats rallied to tie the match at 17-17 on an incredible effort by Erin Eulitz who had four consecutive attacks before finding the floor to even the match.

After burning both timeouts during the run, the Indians turned to their leaders on the court to finish the match off.

“We come together in a huddle on the court because we knew we were out of timeouts,” Perinar said. “We tell each other to calm down and play our game. We

knew what we were going up against and we’ve been in this situation before.”

“There was definitely some senior leadership there,” Papesh added.

Central took the lead briefly at 20-19, but the Indians would regain the lead for good at 22-21.

Perinar finished with 12 kills digs, while Papesh added 11 kills and Maddie Alessio had nine digs.

Brooklyn Bachmann contributed 27 assists.

While the Indians have won regional titles recently, they are normally down south against non-area opponents. Beating a rival in front of their fans made the title sweeter.

“Having the fans here made it so much more memorable,” Papesh said. “They really helped us out a ton. There was great energy and I think it is so much more fun to play close to home.”

“I saw him palming the ball, so I saw it and stripped it and no one really even knew I did it,” O’Donnell said.

Sharp was happy with the play of his DB. “He is a scrappy, hard-nosed

tough kid,” Sharp said. “I am glad to see him have success because he really works hard to prepare himself. Teams are going to pick on him. He may only be 5-10, but he plays like he is 6-4. He works extremely hard.”
