City advances cash to Rialto Square Theatre Funds to help theatre catch up after rough year

The city of Joliet will make an early payment out of its annual contribution fund to the Rialto Square Theatre, but council members said they don’t want to see the venue come back for more.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green addressed the Joliet City Council Tuesday, June 2, seeking early payment on the last installment of the city’s annual contribution to the theater. The city approved an annual contribution of $600,000 for calendar year 2015 to be paid in quarterly installments. Green asked that the third and fourth payments – a total of $300,000 – be paid now.

Rialto’s general manager said weak ticket sales at the start of the 2014 season put the theater $100,000 to $125,00 behind their normal cash accumulation, forcing them to play catch-up through late fall and into the spring season.

Green also noted that the theater normally experiences diminished cash flow again in spring, but can usually cover those slower times by drawing on revenue through the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation,

a non-profit organization that raises funds for the venue.

However, this year’s funds were compromised after the Rialto had to return a $350,000 gift intended to pay for a new marquee, as well as pay off an obligation to the marquee manufacturer. Those extra payments have left the theatre strapped for cash, forcing them to fall behind on regular bills.

Insurance and marketing costs for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, are also due, according to Green.

“We’ve been working on a diminished cash flow basis, we’ve been managing it on a weekly basis,” he said. “The only other

District 86 names new administrators New assistant superintendent among administrative assignments District 86 Board of School Inspectors approved new administrative assignments at their June meeting.

Ankhe Bradley, who will serve as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, comes to Joliet from Rockford Public Schools District 205. Since 2013, she was the district’s assistant superintendent.

Bradley also served as an assistant superintendent and principal in Harvey Public Schools District 152. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University.

In addition to this appointment, the board named Tony Villagomez the new principal at Isaac Singleton Elementary, where he has served as interim principal since September.

Prior to that, Villagomez was the assistant principal at Gompers Junior High.

Joliet man sentenced to 31 years for 2013 attempted murder Circuit Judge handed down sentence June 5 By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @JolietILNews

Anthony D. White, 26, was sentenced to 31 years in prison for a 2013 attempted murder that left a Joliet man paralyzed, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Prosecutors said White, 100 block of East Zarley Boulevard, Joliet, shot Marcus Smith, 33, at a Joliet gas station Feb. 9, 2013.

Smith was critically wounded and hospitalized.

White, along with three other individuals, attacked Smith at a Joliet Citgo, but a motive for the shooting was unclear, according

to the state’s attorney’s office.

Surveillance footage from the gas station showed White grab a gun from his car and shoot Smith during the dispute.

White was on parole at the time of the shooting after serving five years in prison for a 2008 conviction for aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes handed down the sentence Friday after the defendant

pled guilty Feb. 25 to attempted murder.

“Anthony White’s callous brutality has forever changed the lives of Marcus Smith and his family,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “The defendant’s willingness to shoot his gun with seemingly no provocation has left Mr. Smith paralyzed below the neck. He has earned every minute of his lengthy prison sentence.”

I take breaks After each 30-minute work session I take a break of 5 to 10 minutes or so before the next focused session begins. I might grab a snack, make a phone call, or do some quick tasks from my to-do list. Whatever it is, it doesn’t require a lot of brain power or a big chunk of time.

I write down random thoughts. If ideas pop into my head that aren’t related to what I’m working on, I write them on either my master to do list for future scheduling, or in my planner for whatever day I plan to do them.

Then I get right back to work.

Whew, finished writing with 2 minutes to spare on my timer. I’d love to hear how you stay focused when life is pulling you in a million different directions.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the city was OK with the early payment but had a stern warning for Green.

“We’re going to give you the $300,000 today, and we’re square for the rest of the year,” O’Dekirk said. “The caveat is, we don’t want you to come back for any more money for this calendar year. So I

want to make it clear… that this is going to be it.”

Councilman John Gerl added that he sees the Rialto as an investment, but would like to see the theatre’s long-term sustainability plan before the next annual contribution is allocated, mapping out what the Rialto will do differently in 2016.

“We want to see the Rialto do well,” Gerl said. “It’s a cultural center, it’s vital to the success of downtown and it provides just a great entertainment venue.”

The council did not need to take any action to advance the fourth quarter payment, since the total contribution has already been allocated for the year.

City hears proposal on Silver Cross Field auction Slammers owner says talks could hurt team

As the Joliet Slammers move into the second month of the 2015 season, discussions regarding the future ownership of Silver Cross Field are also underway. But, Joliet City Council members say it’s only talk – for now.

Councilman Terry Morris, chairman of the land use and legislative and economic development committee, updated the full city council Tuesday on talks about the field’s future that took place during the committee’s May 28 meeting.

Rick Levin, president of Chicagobased Rick Levin and Associates, suggested an auction of the ballpark. Levin specializes in large real estate auctions in the state of Illinois, including governmentowned properties.

“It seems like the stadium that you guys own might be a financial burden,” Levin told committee members last month, suggesting that the city entertain a real estate auction in order to relieve themselves of maintenance and upkeep costs for the 13-year-old stadium.

“Buyers get excited; a lot of people would come if that stadium was for sale, regardless of price,” Levin said.

“If you are even remotely thinking

about the possibility of selling it, it seems like an auction is the way to go.”

Levin’s company is handling the auction of a stadium in Loves Park, Illinois, that houses the Rockford Aviators. The Aviators compete against the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League.

Slammers President Nick Semaca told the committee the auction at their competitor’s stadium is having some dire consequences.

“We are very open to selling the stadium if you can find a buyer,” Semaca said. “What we don’t want to do is create an environment where the fans believe this franchise is at risk. I would be very worried about… quite frankly, creating risk of losing the team in Joliet.”

Semaca said attendance is down at the Rockford club and questions if the team can survive.

“I attribute it to the uncertainty created by this situation,” he said.

“I think the way you maximize revenue to the city is to get behind this ball club.”

Committee members said they are just exploring options. Still, Joliet officials also note that the stadium is a drain on the city’s finances and said ways to make the stadium sustainable need to be explored.

bleeding from the city’s coffers,” Councilman Jim McFarland said during the May 28 committee meeting.

Semaca said the city should explore its options but asked that officials don’t take an option that could “kill” the team. He added that attendance is already up 50 percent for the Slammers, compared with last year.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Councilwoman Jan Quillman reiterated that talk of selling or auctioning the stadium is just in the discussion stage at this point. “[Levin] was looking to get our business, but in actuality he hasn’t auctioned off any baseball fields,” Quillman said, noting that the Loves Park deal is not done. “We are not selling the field at this point, but we are looking at options on what to do with it. I didn’t want to hurt the team’s seasons; they’re doing quite well.”

Neither the committee nor the full council took any action on the issue.

Carney, Red 6th in state Joliet duo medal at tournament

Toward the end of the tennis regular season when it was suggested that Joliet singles players Tom Carney, a senior, and Morgan Red, a freshman, team up for doubles, Carney was not immediately sold.

“When I made the transition to doubles, I was a little skeptical myself,” Carney said. “I didn’t think I would be a very good doubles player because I have been playing singles my entire life. Red was on board and he convinced me and we went for it.”

“I knew Tom was good in his volley play and his serve is strong and he is a veteran, which helped me out a lot,” Red said. “I think the righty and lefty pairing

contributed to our success.”

The move paid off.

The tandem went 8-2 and placed sixth in the state May 30.

It was the first tennis medal for Joliet since Mickey Chaudhuri took seventh in singles in 1988 and the highest a doubles team has placed since Howard Sprague and Robert Hoffer won the state title in 1932.

“Only six teams get medals at state and our names will be forever ingrained in that state tournament and I am very proud of that,” Carney said. “It was just perfect. Everything just clicked.

I don’t think at West there will be another perfect story like this and I’m glad it was us. I’m glad Red was my partner.”

Minooka wins regional; falls in sectional final

Cristian Sanchez pitched a five-hit shutout in Minooka’s 2-0 win over Plainfield South to win the Joliet West Regional.

After being ejected in the Class 4A Joliet West Regional semifinal, Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic had to watch the regional championship game from outside of the gates.

The Indians set out to make sure that game would not be the last this season for Petrovic.

Minooka (22-14) defeated Southwest Prairie Conference Rival Plainfield South 2-0 behind a five-hit shutout on the mound from Cristian Sanchez to win the Class 4A Joliet West Regional title.

“I went out there, and I’m sure the rest of the team did too, wanting to win for ourselves, but mostly wanting to win for Petro,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez contributed at the plate as well, as he got Minooka on the board in the first inning.

After Hayden Laczynski opened the inning with a double and reached third on a Jacob Null bunt single, Sanchez got the Indians on the board with an RBI groundout.

Null led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second.

South pitcher Shane Ritter retired the next two hitters before Paulsen doubled down the left-field line to score Null

with an insurance run. Ritter gave up six hits in six innings.

He struck out eight and walked two.

“I knew coming in against Ritter that we would have to do it on the mound and keep the runs low and find a way to score off Ritter. He is good, he’s going to Iowa,” Sanchez said. “It wasn’t how we drew it up. We didn’t get the big hits, but one run is enough and as long as I have defense and trust the guys, I can do my part.”

Like Sanchez, Petrovic knew South wouldn’t go down without a fight.

“They are a great team, they play baseball how it is supposed to be played,” Petrovic said.

“They are a hard-nosed team, so you can expect a fight every time.”

After winning the regional, Minooka defeated Normal Community 6-5 in the Illinois Wesleyan Sectional.

Jonathan Vesper paced the Indians with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam.

Minooka’s season came to an end with a 6-0 loss to O’Fallon in the sectional final.

Just getting that far did not seem possible early in the season, when the Indians were struggling to find a win.

“At the beginning, Red said we could win the consolation. He was being young and ambitious and I was being cautious because my performance at state before had been ok, but I’d never been this far,” Carney said. “I told him to just take it a match at a time and then we just kept winning and winning and winning. Once we made it to Saturday, I believed we could win the consolation.

“I still can’t even believe it happened. I will just be sitting in the car and it pops in my head that we took sixth and I get happy. I am very proud of how I ended my career. I thought I would finish in the top 32, but we took sixth and I can’t be happier with myself and Morgan Red.” In the fifth-place match, Carney and Red were defeated for the second time, falling 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (6) to Lope Adelakun and Michael Czlonka of Hinsdale Central.

Us as seniors, we had to take the lead and show the juniors how to do it. People on this team know their roles and no one is bigger than the team. Petrovic thinks he knows what it was.

“I remember it vividly. We

We really didn’t know what we were going to do and the other teams didn’t know what we were going to do.”

As a freshman, Red has three more years to take what he learned and grow as a player, something he is excited for.

“This will help me focus and remember the mental and emotional difficulties I can overcome,” Red said. “Mental toughness is a huge part of tennis and I learned that from this tournament and I will take that and carry it with me for the next three years.”

Red said that he is not going to put pressure on himself to try and better the run he and Carney made this year.

“I have to be humble and work hard and focus,” he said. “I am not really worried about how far I am going to get, I am just going to do the best I can and not really worry about the results. If I do what I can, the results will follow.”

Red wasn’t the only area freshman to be successful, as Lockport’s Jack Randall went 5-2 and just missed a state medal.

He opened with a pair of wins, beating Hayden Dzurisin of Prairie Ridge 6-4, 6-2 and Nate Dell of Glenbard West 6-3, 6-2.

He then lost to Downers Grove South’s Tony Leto 6-1, 7-5 before beating Dominic Macaluso of O’Fallon.

After wins over Suveer Kothuri of Waubonsie Valley and Victor Spolidorio of Dunlap, Randall was eliminated with a 6-1, 4-6, (10-5) loss to Colin Harvey of Stevenson.

“Star Wars has long been a part of my life,” said Hasse, who works for “The Onion,” the news satire media organization. “If you went through my high school notebooks, you’d find more drawings of Star Wars than you would any bits of knowledge.”

While Hasse and other artists and authors peddled their wares and signed their work inside the library, costumed characters walked the streets of downtown Joliet, surprising many drivers in the process.

One Imperial Stormtrooper, clad in signature white armor, seemed to see the humor in the situation.

“Just another day in beautiful downtown Joliet,” he quipped.

After an 11 a.m. parade, the costumers patiently took photos with children and adult fans, alike.

Joliet’s Tim Jarmusz also fell in love with the movie franchise as a child, so these days he plays the role of a Jedi for the Rebel Legion, a Star Wars costuming group.

Jarmusz said groups such as Rebel Legion have strict standards for authenticity.

After an individual constructs a costume, they must submit photos to the organization and make necessary corrections in order for it to be accepted.

“I always liked the Jedi and the lightsabers,” Jarmusz said while wielding his replica weapon for a crowd at the Joliet Area Historical

Imagination Inspires After the parade, 11th District Congressman Bill Foster spoke to the crowd outside the library about how Star Wars has served as an inspiration for him and others. Before his political career, Foster was a physicist and particle accelerator designer at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.

“Imagination drove us to think big at Fermilab,” he said. “Star Wars has challenged us to use our imagination, not only in movies, but in science and technology, as well.”

Foster later joined fellow Fermilab scientist Jerry Zimmerman, who is known as Mr. Freeze, in a demonstration exploring the science of cryogenics. In The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo is cryogenically frozen in “carbonite” by bounty hunter Boba Fett.

To a fascinated audience, Zimmerman showed the effects of liquid nitrogen on objects such as plastic bags, balloons, rubber gloves, marshmallows, tennis balls and racquetballs.

Foster actively participated in the show, helping hold a plastic bag containing liquid nitrogen until it exploded. He later wound up covered in soap bubbles after yet another explosion during Mr. Freeze’s final experiment.

A Novel Event Fantasy and science fiction author John Jackson Miller, who has several Star Wars novels and comics to his credit, said Joliet’s

Star Wars Day was a unique event.

“I haven’t seen anything quite like this,” said the Wisconsin resident. “There are many big conventions, but nothing in the heart of downtown, with this many people. One sponsored by a library is unique. I’ve enjoyed getting to see folks.”

Miller’s new novel, Star Wars: A New Dawn, is the first book done with LucasFilm. Many of his characters will turn up in Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels series. He said that one storyline might potentially pass through novels, comics, movies and TV. “The idea is that everything is coordinated from now on,” Miller said. “A character in my book may turn up in a TV show or in movies. … It’s a new way of doing things. In the old days, no one pretended one thing had anything to do with the other.”

Miller is also a noted comics industry historian who studies comic-book circulation on his website The Comics Chronicles (http://comichron.com). He said that he can see why the Star Wars story and characters have such a universal appeal.

Reusche and fellow R2 Builders Club member Andy Radovich shared their work the enthusiastic fans in the museum’s Caterpillar Auditorium.

While Reusche took questions from the audience, Radovich maneuvered the R2D2 unit around the front of the stage area and added some of the 210 classic droid sounds he has available to the delight of a floor full of children.

“I always wanted to (build) it, but I didn’t have the nudge,” Radovich said. “I had a friend who loved R2D2 pass away, so I built it in her honor.”

Reusche said building a droid takes time and plenty of research.

In addition to reading about droid mechanics on the club’s website (http://astromech.net), the builders usually get many of the necessary parts made on a 3D printer.

“It takes about two years to build,” Reusche said. “A lot of it is waiting for the parts, making them and welding them. You have to wait for someone to have a parts run.”

Centeno built his RQ25 – a droid that appeared briefly in Return of the Jedi – in less than a year because other people dropped out on their builds and sold him parts.

“You start small and work your way out,” Centeno said. “ Fifty percent is reading to know how the electrical system works. There are videos that show you how to make them all over YouTube.”

And the cost?

“If you do it all yourself in wood with a router and a table saw, it will run about $2,000,” Reusche said. “If you want a high-end model with all metal and all the panels, it can run upwards of $15,000 to $20,000.”

Reusche said builders often bring the droids to visit children in hospitals. Radovich usually brings his two children, aged 2 and 4, to any Star Wars event.

“The kids give (R2D2) hugs and kisses before bed,” he said. “My wife was not a big Star Wars fan when we got together, but since then, she has come to love it.”
