“In my service in the Navy, I have seen how all [service members] focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, to return to the open arms of our family and friends when we return from duty. Not all are so lucky. Today is a day that has been set aside for us to remember those uniformed members.”
- KATHERINE BOYCE, U.S. NAVY COMMANDER
earing a uniform is a brave choice, and leaders in Crest Hill want the general public to take the time to say thank you. The city of Crest Hill held its 27th annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday at the Memorial Garden. The ceremony honored those who died while serving in uniform, as members of the armed services or law enforcement. Mayor Raymond Soliman gave thanks to all soldiers and officers, including the younger generation who will serve the nation and local police departments in the future. “I think we are all aware that freedoms are not free,” Soliman said. “They come with a price, and sometimes it comes with the ultimate price.” Soliman said the freedoms U.S. citizens enjoy are due to the sacrifices of service men and women and law enforcement personnel. “You’ve made sacrifices to your families, you’ve made sacrifices to your education, you’ve made sacrifices to your jobs, you’ve made sacrifices to your friendships,” he said.
