District 202, support staff reach deal Agreement avoids district proposal to outsource custodial services By Andrea Earnest Enterprise Staff

Plainfield School District 202 and the union representing its custodians have reached an agreement that avoids a district proposal to outsource custodial services. While the deal allows the school district to save money and continue to directly employ its custodians, Plainfield Association of Support Staff President John Piechocinski called the agreement “bittersweet at best.” “Yes, we have preserved the jobs of our dedicated school custodial staff,” Piechocinski said in a statement. “But, we did so by reducing salaries and sick leave, and by cutting the number of employees who are currently available to serve the students and schools.” Through the new agreement, District 202 said custodians will continue receiving pay, workers’ compensation coverage, health insurance and retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Fund. However, Piechocinski noted that some long-term employees will have their pay cut by 15 to 20 percent and other custodial salaries were frozen.
