The village of Plainfield is looking at the possibility of extending it’s 20-year old TIF district, looking to keep funds available for local improvements. TIF stands for “tax increment financing.” In the simplest terms, once a TIF district is formed, the taxes collectible by each taxing body within the district can collect are frozen. But that doesn’t mean the taxes themselves remain the same. As annual tax assessments continue, taxes generally go up annually. But, for the life of the TIF —a limit of 23-years by state law – those additional dollars, or increments, will go into the TIF fund, rather than to each of the SEE TIF PAGE 5
