Village looks to expand walkways Pedestrian paths included in draft budget BY MARNEY SIMON Enterprise Staff @plainfieldnews sweditor@enterprisepublications.com
Village leaders are looking at options to increase the area’s pedestrian walkways. But pinpointing just where to concentrate dollars has led to some disagreement in the planning process. On Feb. 12, members of the Village Board examined proposed capital improvement projects as part of the fiscal year 2019 (FY19) draft budget. The next fiscal year begins on May 1, with approval of the entire budget expected in early spring. Earlier this month, board members heard from Patrick Engineering on plans for engineering for two of those pedestrian walkways: VanDyke at 143rd Street, and 127th and Route 30. Staff said those two projects were on the high priority list for immediate work. “This is an opportunity to go through an IDOT process to render a couple of sidewalk connection crossing projects as federally eligible, as an opportunity to seek federal funding in the future,” Jarrod Cebulski, Transportation Manager with Patrick Engineering, told board members on Feb. 5. The contract is structured to have one or both locations eligible for federal and/or state grants funds. In that way, the village may be able to leverage outside funding sources. Patrick Engineering is proposing to conduct the engineering work for Phase 1 and 2 of the improvements at those two locations. Both have been identified in the village’s transportation plan as gaps in the pedestrian network. That engineering agreement includes a total cost not to exceed $263,018.
