Run for the Brave Village race gets green light for 2018

A popular race that benefits those who sacrificed for the United States will return next spring to Plainfield.

On Oct. 16, the village board approved the 2018 Run for the Brave 5K, formerly the Wounded Warrior 5K. The annual event is coordinated by Operation Welcome You Home.

Next year’s race will mark the seventh year for the event.

The race is a fundraiser for military veterans injured while serving.

Last year, the race was moved from Settler’s Park to the Wallin Woods subdivision.

The race moves to Plainfield North High School in 2018, utilizing the same basic route as the annual Fast Cat 5K. The Plainfield Police Department estimates the run will require roughly two hours of street closures and 20 personnel.

PACE Park-n-Ride gets final approval Groundbreaking expected soon on 600-space lot

Construction of a new transportation facility for riders who rely on PACE, the suburban bus division of the Regional Transportation Authority, will soon be underway. Final approvals for the project were made this week, as members of the village board selected a construction company to carry out the multi-million-dollar project.

On Oct. 23, trustees approved a construction bid recommendation from staff, awarding the project to Austin Tyler Construction of Elwood.

The company provided a total bid of $5.2 million, well below the engineer’s estimate of $6.8 million. The bid was the lowest of seven submitted to the village.

PACE requested the bid to reach a total cost of no more than $4.8 million. The village was able to make a handful of deductions, keeping the estimated cost at that level.

“We need to make this $5.2 million bid fit our $4.8 million budget, because PACE was very clear that they are not paying more than $4.8 million for the construction, and the village was very clear that PACE’s contribution was 100

percent of the construction cost and 100 percent of the engineering cost,” said Director of Public Works Allen Persons. “That’s been the agreement all along… That being said, the deductions basically, for the most part, are more aesthetic and more decorative.”

Persons said the village as able to cut costs by eliminating a concrete wall designed to keep pedestrians out of the right of way of buses, and instead use fencing for that purpose, at a significant savings.

Other decorative elements, including one of two signs, were pulled from the project to save cash.

During the design phase of the

project, the village worked around a concept plan of a 400-space parking lot with a restroom facility. Following meetings with PACE representatives, the scope of the project was broadened to add 200 spaces, creating a 600-space lot.

Construction of the project was approved back in January. In March, the village board made an engineering agreement with Baxter and Woodman for engineering and design of the new facility and parking lot. The plans mirror other bus depots that PACE uses throughout the region.

“The building actually got a little bit bigger,” Persons said. “There were some comments about the size of the washrooms, things like

that, so the building did get a little bit bigger to accommodate people who are going to be utilizing that, as well as some decorative elements added to ‘pretty’ the building up.”

The land where the facility will be constructed is part of a previous purchase of 58 acres of farm land made by the village over a decade ago. The land was originally set to accommodate the proposed Suburban Transit Access Route (STAR) Line Railway project, a plan proposed in 2003 but ultimately scrapped due to lack of funding. Village leaders are currently exploring options to develop the reminder of the property.

Persons noted that the village

has worked with Austin Tyler Construction before, including the public parking lot expansion next to the Plainfield Public Library.

In addition to the 600 parking spaces, the project will also include a waiting room and washroom facility, a new access roadway with traffic lights and turn lanes, water/sewer/utility extensions, street and parking lot lighting, one PACE sign, landscaping, and storm water improvements.

The board also approved an agreement with Baxter & Woodman for engineering services on the project, in the amount of $130,495.

Groundbreaking at the site is expected in the next few weeks, with construction to begin immediately.

PACE began bus service between Plainfield and Chicago in 2009.

The service operates weekday rush hour bus service into Chicago from two stops in Plainfield, one at Larry’s Diner, the other adjacent to the Village Hall.

Approximately 250 people use the buses every day from Plainfield’s two stops. The two routes – Route 855 and Route 755 – consist of a total of 36 buses per day.

The new facility is expected to cost to total of $5.8 million, combined cost of construction and engineering. PACE will reimburse the village for the total cost of the project.

The agreement between the village and PACE will last 40 years.

Public works crews have begun fall projects by repairing roadway markings that have faded through time and use.

On Oct. 16, village trustees approved a contract with Mark-It Corporation of Romeoville, to provide new thermoplastic and paint pavement markings in various locations throughout the vil-

lage.

“This is routine operation as far as far as providing pavement striping for areas throughout the community,” said Director of Public Works Allen Persons. “It’s basically refreshing crosswalks, other striped areas, bike lanes, things like that.”

Persons said the contract is typically bid for a two-year period, because there are a limited number of contractors who perform the service, and prices tend

to stay stable.

“I’m happy to report that the low bid that we provided is not only below the engineers estimate, but it’s also 5 percent lower than what we have paid in the two previous years,” Persons said.

“There’s a savings there moving forward with this contract, but the village did competitively bid this.”

Village trustees asked if there was a possibility to request certain areas, specifically the roadway at 127th and Meadow.

“With the closure for a while, it seemed like it got a lot of use

with the turn traffic, and some of the striping is actually gone, and there is a lot of students who use that route,” said Trustee Edward O’Rourke. “So, they pull out and go east on 127th, and the lines are actually gone, and then there are people who are headed west that are turning left and it just seems like it could create a safety issue for vehicles, especially as the weather starts to change with the snow and the ice as well.”

Persons said the village can look at areas suggested by the board and evaluate the need.

“We can talk about that as part

of the ongoing budget discussions,” Persons said of adding areas to the scope of the project.

“These are unit pries, and at the board’s discretion, change orders can be approved… But we’d be happy to talk about that and talk about the needs as part of the budget process. If there’s some additional work that needs to be done, we can accommodate that.”

Mark-It Corporation is IDOT prequalified, and has been used by the village for various projects over the past decade. The 20172018 pavement markings contract totaled $71,614.

Commissioners reappointed to HPC Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) first formed in 2004, serves as an advisory body to Village Board Four members of the village’s

Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) have been approved for brand new, three-year terms to the board.

On Oct. 16, the village trustees approved the appointment of Michael Bortel, Suzanne Derrick, Kenneth Barvian, and Leif Hendrickson to the commission for terms to expire on Oct. 18, 2020.

The commissioners were each serving terms that expire this year.

“They do an outstanding job representing the history of Plainfield, and I think we’re very lucky to want them to continue to be appointed to that commission,” said Trustee Bill Lamb.

The HPC was first formed in 2004, and serves as an advisory body to the Village Board.

The HPC holds public hearings, establishes the local historic district, and reviews any exterior modifications of a building that’s in a local district or that is or could be a local landmark.

The HPC also considers potential demolition requests inside historic districts, and investigates in those demolitions are appropriate or if properties may have adaptive uses.

Part of the mission of the HPC is to Identify and preserve the distinctive historic architectural areas, buildings, structures, landscapes, and archaeological sites which represent elements of the village’s cultural, social, economic, political, and/or architectural his-

tory.

The HPC is comprised of nine appointees who have knowledge or training in fields closely related to historic preservation.

The HPC meets the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Village Hall.

143rd Street Extension Director of Public Works Allen Persons told members of the board on Oct. 16 that progress was being made on the plan to build an alternate route in Plainfield.

“The village did officially make an application for the Tiger Federal grant as of [Oct. 16], for the 143rd Street extension,” Persons said.

“It’s a pretty extensive application, it took a lot of time. It got submitted… electronically and frankly, I’m glad it’s done. I’m relieved and I’m glad that it’s done, and we’ll be happy to report the results.”

The proposed expansion project would help to reroute truck traffic away from the already busy downtown corridor. Persons said it will likely be several months for the US Department of Transportation to evaluate the application.

New fast food restaurant Trustees approved a site plan review for a fast food restaurant looking to move into a vacant building that once housed a White Castle.

The applicant representing the restaurant Slim Chickens is seeking to retrofit the old fast food joint to accommodate their restaurant, inside the Menards subdivision at Route 59 and 135th Street.

The previously approved quickservice restaurant will improve the lot with a small addition, as well as appropriate branding.

The site plan approval is contingent upon the restaurant com-

plying with requirements of the village engineer and the Plainfield Fire Protection District.

Swami Temple The board gave the final approval for a new Hindu Temple to open inside a business park at 13250 S. Route 59. Board members gave the final thumbs up to a special use permit for the Sri Ayyappa Swami Temple.

The special use will allow for religious assembly at the site inside the Meadows Campus business park.

The operating hours are proposed for 5 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

The applicant expects between 10 and 20 members to utilize the site during weekday evenings and 40 to 60 attendees per day throughout the weekend. Special events and occasions should attract a maximum of 100 attendees.

The calm before the storm Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER Tribune Content Agency Every time Donald Trump blurts or tweets a shocker - “maybe it’s the calm before the storm,” for instance - questions flood the media.

Is he serious? What did he mean?

Yes, of course, but beyond these, larger questions hover half-asked, cutting into the soul of who we are. This is painful, but not necessarily a bad thing. For me, one question that keeps emerging is: What is the relationship between Trump and the military-political system he stepped into?

That is to say, is he furthering its covert agenda (creating the conditions for more war) or, contrarily, exposing it for what it is?

Or both?

Back in February, for instance, Trump the pugnacious 14-year-old told a Reuters reporter: “I am the first one that would like to see . . . nobody have nukes, but we’re never going to fall behind any country even if it’s a friendly country, we’re never going to fall behind on nuclear power. It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we’re going to be at the top of the pack.”

America, America! It’s at the top of the pack, man. Trump puts what’s really going on into the language of the playground, delighting his base (a third of the country) and convulsing pretty much everyone else. Of course, what’s really going on is more than just bully blather. With Trump at the helm, the United States of America, the planet’s premiere superpower, is putting the planet, in the words of Republican Sen. Bob Corker, “on the path to World War Three.”

We were on that path anyway, just with more dignity and decorum. And more ambivalence. As the U.S. prepared for war it also negotiated peace: in particular, the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, which Trump wants to decertify. Most security experts have hailed the agreement as a remarkable achievement, halting Iran’s nuclear weapons development, curtailing a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, easing tensions with the U.S. and

helping establish an international framework for creating peace.

The foreign policy establishment remains wary of Iran and considers the agreement flawed, but nonetheless crucial. Which Iran, former CIA analyst Paul Pillar asked recently, is most likely to act with destabilizing aggressiveness?

“Is it an Iran,” he wrote, “that is being reintegrated into the community of nations, that sees material benefit from negotiating restrictions on itself and then scrupulously observing those restrictions, and sees the opportunity for gaining more respectability and influence as long as it plays by the international community’s rules? Or is it an Iran that is kept isolated and punished, sees any significant agreement that it does negotiate get destroyed or reneged upon by other parties, that is the target of unending confrontation and hostility, and that is treated forever as a pariah? The answer should be obvious.”

Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious. The point Pillar and others are making in support of the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, is that trying to punish and dominate our enemies tends to create results that are the opposite of what we want, or claim to want.

The idea that enemies are permanent, which is how a segment of the U.S. foreign policy establishment regards Iran, hardens our national commitment to militarism. Listening to countries with whom we are at odds - working with them, finding power in solidarity with them rather than threatening to annihilate them - calls militarism into question.

We live with and build national policy around the compromise between these two ways of being in the world.

Thus, even in an agreement as mutually beneficial as the JCPOA, the U.S. maintains a state of assumed dominance: Iran has to stop its nuclear weapons development. But the nuclear arsenal of the United States and the

agreement’s other signatories, which include China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom, are not under discussion. The unspoken assumption, it seems, is that some nukes are necessary, and some countries must remain in possession of them.

All of which brings Trump’s “top of the nuclear pack” comment back into the conversation. Dominating the world, especially by possessing the most weapons of mass destruction, is by far the simplest way to understand power, and there are enormous interests in the U.S. that revere - and most importantly, benefit from - the domination outlook. Trump both promotes this agenda and exposes it to the world.

Indeed: “. . . recently we hear (an) alarming announcement by a nuclearweapon state that it intends to continuously strengthen and expand its nuclear arsenal to ensure its place ‘at the top of the pack.’”

The words are those of Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, speaking at the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 26, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, who warned that the United States - which he referred to as “a certain nuclear-weapon state” - was not only modernizing its nuclear arsenal but developing low-yield bombs, which means, my God, usable nuclear weapons, and thus launching a new, global nuclear arms race.

This project, part of a trillion-dollar planned upgrade of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, began during the Obama, not the Trump, administration.

But now the world has President Trump, commander-by-impulse and reckless reality-TV host with the power to launch war. He wants to decertify the Iran deal and declare it not to be in the country’s interests. Is he exposing the final phase of an international politics based on military dominance?

Here’s another question he forces us to ask: How is universal nuclear disarmament possible without a nucleararmed, external force imposing it?

This is not just a question to be pondered by the 122 nations that recently voted in favor of the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Those who boycotted the vote hold the answer.

Grants help high school juniors broaden academic horizons District 202 high school juniors once again have the chance to broaden their academic horizons with the help of a special grant to help pay for a summer extended learning experience.

The Plainfield Foundation for Excellence will award up to five Horizon Grants worth up to $1,000 each to current high school juniors from all four District 202 high schools and Plainfield Academy, the district’s alternative high school.

Horizon Grant applications are due April 20, 2018. Winners will be announced by May 4, 2018. Applications are available on the Foundation for Excellence web site (www.d202foundation.org) under “Programs.”

The Foundation introduced the Horizon Grants in 2012 as part of its mission to support academic

Plainfield Central PTSO helping needy families for 25th year The Plainfield High SchoolCentral Campus Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) is collecting monetary donations for its 25th annual Christmas drive for needy District 202-area families.

The PHSCC PTSO will use the money received to provide the food for a Christmas dinner and buy individual gifts for needy District 202 families. Last year the PTSO helped 30 families in the District 202 community.

“While we are excited to be celebrating a quarter of a century of helping the needy in our District, we wish it wasn’t necessary,” said Linda Hanley, committee spokesperson.

The PTSO helps all identified families and has never turned away anyone in need. Families are identified through school staff and social workers district-wide.

Families who believe they are eligible to be adopted should contact their school’s social workers.

Each family’s wish list is assigned a number to ensure the

innovation for District 202 students.

Last summer, eight high school juniors took part in enriching learning experiences across the country with the help of a Horizon Grant.

The Foundation for Excellence over the last 33 years has raised and contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to support District 202 students and staff in the form of grants, scholarships and special funding.

The Foundation has also supported special programs including a District Art Gallery, the Great Read community reading program and the 1847 Schoolhouse Restoration.

Several District 202 schools will be involved again this year, Hanley said, including Central, Lakewood Falls and Lincoln elementary schools; Ira Jones and Indian Trail middle schools; and PHSCC. As well, numerous private families and community and service groups have pledged their support including C.W. Avery Family YMCA, Followers of Christ Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxilary Marne Unit #13, and the PHSCC Student Council.

Take Back the Night takes to the streets This year, a scholarship was awarded to a survivor as part of Will County Take Back the Night’s effort

Since 2007, nearly 75 female homicide victims and children from Will County are recorded.

Enter the annual Will County Take Back the Night vigil and march, which united residents, civic leader and other community members in supporting survivors and remembering lives lost through violence.

“It’s a beautiful event because we have survivors and supporters coming together,” said Anna Miller, co-chair for Will County Take Back the Night. “Sometimes people feel like they’re alone, they come here, and they feel supported. It’s a beautiful, power atmosphere. They don’t feel lonely anymore or find the strength to get through another day or the strength to leave a bad situation.”

New this time around, the pro-

gram’s keynote speech focused on human trafficking.

“It’s a growing problem in Will County, and I think most people are unaware of that,” Miller said.

“It’s also aligned with what we’re trying to do, which is trying to bring awareness to gender-based violence.”

Throughout the world, 4.5 million people are victims of sexual exploitation or trafficking.

“It’s hard for people to understand sometimes when they hear about human trafficking and sex trafficking occurring here in the United States, and when we tell you that trafficking occurs right here in the communities right around here, it’s hard for people to understand that until they understand what sexual exploitation and trafficking actually looks like,” Reclaim13 executive director Cassandra Ma said. “When we tell people that sexual exploitation oftentimes starts and begins in a very

young child’s life in the form of sexual abuse, 90 percent of victims of sex trafficking were first sexually abused in childhood. That statistic is born out again and again in the work that we do.”

Reclaim13 is a non-profit organization focused on sexually abused and exploited children, and they provide support to individuals through its mentor program and Cherish House, a home for commercially sexually exploited youth.

During the program, Will County Circuit Clerk Andrea Chasteen presented Will County Take Back the Night with a check in the amount of $4,750.

A number of area organizations that support women in Will County organized booths, and representatives were on hand during the program to give people a chance to learn more about the options available to those in need.

Miller said having these orga-

nizations present works two-fold, in terms of creating awareness for community resources committed to women and raising money to support Will County Take Back the Night.

This year, a scholarship was awarded to a survivor as part of Will County Take Back the Night’s effort. To the beat of a drum, the program concluded with a march led by loved ones representing individuals who died.

Volunteers paint Children’s Advocacy Center ITW, United Way volunteers spent 2 days painting interior walls of building at 304 N. Scott St. Volunteers from ITW Deltar Fasteners in Frankfort and United Way of Will County recently dipped brushes into buckets to put a fresh coat of paint on the walls of what will be the new offices for the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

ITW and United Way volunteers spent two days painting the interior walls of the building at 304 N. Scott Street. The building will become the new home for the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center when the staff moves in at the end of November. The Center’s current building will be demolished to make way for the new Will County Courthouse.

“This tremendous gesture by ITW and its volunteer workers put the Children’s Advocacy Cen-

ter a major step closer to occupying a new building where the staff can pursue its mission of bringing hope, healing, and justice to sexually abused children,” said Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who chairs the Center’s Board of Directors. “Community partnerships with socially responsible corporations like ITW play an important role in enabling the Children’s Advocacy Center to conduct its important work on behalf of vulnerable children.”

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center is funded in part by United Way of Will County. ITW decided to organize teams of volunteer painters after the Children’s Advocacy Center’s staff visited the company last month to encourage employees to continue their already generous participation in the annual United Way Campaign.

“It was great to be able to support and to help out locally. Community involvement is one of our core values, and it was a pleasure to serve the Children’s Advocacy Center,” said Joel R. Lee ITW United Way Division Chair.

“By taking these important steps to ensure the Children’s Advocacy Center has a home, Larry Walsh and the County Board have dis-

played tremendous leadership and a deep commitment to protecting abused children,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow.

The Children’s Advocacy Center will occupy the building for the next several years while it embarks on a development campaign to raise funds to purchase or build a permanent facility. The Center’s goal is to develop a site that has a residential look that will be welcoming to sexually abused children and their families.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the not-for-profit Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in 1995 to improve investigations of child sexual abuse cases.

The center’s professionally trained and compassionate staff performs child-sensitive interviews when there are allegations of sexual or severe physical abuse.

Children’s recorded statements have been used in the successful prosecution of thousands of predators. The caring team also has provided counseling, advocacy services, and medical referrals for nearly 10,000 sexually and severely abused children and their family members.

Drive Sober campaign enforced for Halloween This Halloween the Joliet Police Department is cracking down on impaired drivers with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort and is giving a fair warning to holiday revelers: Keep the Party off Road.

“On Halloween, we urge you to beware of impaired driving,” said Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton. “Driving impaired by alcohol or drugs is deadly. It is illegal and will get you pulled over and arrested this Halloween.”

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates, more than 300 people were killed in alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes in each of the last three years in Illinois.

In 2014, 302 people lost their lives in crashes involving at least one driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above. In 2015, that number rose slightly to 315 and remained the same in 2016. Just one DUI arrest could cost an estimated $18,000 or more and result in revoked driving privileges for up to a year.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign urges everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe during Halloween: � Plan a safe way to get home before you attend a party. � Designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member to get home. � Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired. Designate a sober friend to walk you home. � If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as it is safe to do so. � If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.

The Halloween enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Police to purchase state-of-the-art system to process crime scenes State’s Attorney’s Office has forwarded a check totaling $43,089.42 to pay for half of the $84,200 laser scanning and measurement system Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that he is partnering with the Joliet Police Department to purchase a state-of-the-art laser scanning system that will dramatically advance the processing of violent crime and crash scenes.

State’s Attorney Glasgow has utilized money he seized from criminals engaged in illegal activities to cover half the cost of the FARO S350 3D Laser Scanner from FARO Technologies in Lake Mary, Fla. The State’s Attorney’s Office has forwarded a check totaling $43,089.42 to pay for half of the $84,200 laser scanning and measurement system.

The technology in this package will dramatically advance the ability of the Joliet Police Department’s highly skilled crime scene technicians to quickly process crime and crash scenes with pinpoint accuracy and high-definition detail.

“Effective crime-scene processing is the critical first step in

every investigation,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “I have witnessed the application of this technology in several investigations in the past several months, and I believe it to be one of the most significant law enforcement developments in years.

Evidence technicians at a murder scene will spend hours taking photographs and video, making meticulous measurements, and drawing detailed diagrams. The same is true for collision reconstruction specialists at vehicle crash scenes, some of which can span several city blocks or long stretches of rural road. This 21st Century technology, in their skilled hands, will substantially reduce the amount of time it takes them to document these scenes for investigation and prosecution purposes.

Furthermore, the FARO system will enhance their accuracy down to the millimeter and provide a recorded perspective of crime or crash scenes that is un-

precedented.

“My prosecutors will be able to lay the foundation to use these records at trial, giving judges and jurors incredibly detailed threedimensional views of these crime scenes,” the State’s Attorney said. “We will literally be taking the jury to a crime scene, not after-the-fact as has historically been done in the past, but at the exact moment that all the relevant evidence is still in its original location.”

“The Joliet Police Department is committed to delivering the highest level of professionalism in Public Safety,” said Police Chief Brian Benton. “This stateof-the art crime scene technology will help us in our efforts and we appreciate States Attorney Glasgow’s continued support.”

The State’s Attorney’s contribution for this system uses no taxpayer dollars. “Instead, I am using money I have seized from criminals who were engaged in illegal activities in our county,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “I can think of no more appropriate use for such money than to assist Will County’s largest police department in solving violent crimes and taking dangerous criminals off our streets.”

AGAIN Plainfield Central wins second regional title in as many years with 2-1 win over Geneva Saturday

A season ago, Plainfield Central proved it was a good soccer team, winning a regional championship.

This season, the Wildcats proved they are a winning program — taking a second-straight regional title with a 2-1 win over Geneva in penalty kicks.

“I know it is kind of cliche, but give them credit. I know it hurts for them,” said Plainfield coach Kevin Fitzgerald. “I read somewhere where their coach said they wanted to prove they were better than an 11 seed and they did. That is life in our sectioal. You throw out the seeds. Its 80 minutes, 100 if we insist. I am just realy proud of our guys. They left it all out there. We told them there is no substitute for playing hard and man, they played hard. They are a beautiful thing when they do it as a group. They are winners.”

Fitzgerald said he was happy to see the win for the entire team, but especially the ones leaving the program.

“It is awesome to see the senior group rewarded like this,” he said.

“They have raised the bar forever.”

Geneva struck first when Jack Cottrell convereted a penalty kick that gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead at the half.

Central evened it up in the second half when Simeon Adesina found Noah Selefski in front of the net for a goal.

The game would remain even though both overtime periods and the game went into penalty kicks, where Central’s Joel Sanchez nailed the game-winner as the No. 4 kicker.

“We know how good Geneva is and this is playoffs and everyone wants to win. Both teams were going at it and we are in survivor mode,” he said. “It comes down to teamwork and we are so united SEE CHAMPS PAGE 13

North wins battle of the Tigers

Teams heading into the state football playoffs like to talk about building momentum, and Plainfield North certainly has things moving in the right direction.

After a pair of tough one-point losses against Minooka and Oswego East, North had rolled to three straight wins by a combined score of 151-20.

A quick glance at Friday’s finale at Joliet West might suggest more of the same.

The 38-14 pasting of the homestanding Tigers left Plainfield North at 7-2 heading into this weekend’s match-up with Andrew in the Class 7A playoffs. The 14th-seeded Tigers

will host the 19th-seeded Thunderbolts.

Until wide receiver Garret Cook put his finger on the problem in the second half, however, Plainfield North looked like a team that might find its way to another close loss.

Cook’s two spectacular touchdown catches broke the back of Joliet West, who sent its fans home unhappy on Senior Night. Joliet West was the last team to qualify for the Class 8A playoffs with a 5-4 record, and earned a date at LincolnWay East, the state’s top-ranked team.

The first half was a wretched effort by both teams. Plainfield North had four fumbles, a few dropped passes, two defensive breakdowns, a couple of bad penalties and the backlash from some equally dodgy

officiating. Buoyed only by Nathan Jurek’s 45-yard line-drive field goal at the first half buzzer, Plainfield North trailed 14-13, and things didn’t look promising.

“We played sloppy in the first half,” Plainfield North coach Tim Kane said. “We changed things up on both sides of the ball. We got some better match-ups on both sides of the ball.

“I was so proud of how we responded after halftime. We settled down on both sides of the ball.”

The first clue that things were better after the half came when Plainfield North defenders Nick Albert and Alex Nowak stuffed a fourth-and-one at the Plainfield 40 on Joliet West’s opening drive of SEE TIGERS PAGE 113

Plainfield wrapped up the scoring when Joe Stiffend burst 23 yards up the middle with 2:08 to go. The Plainfield North netted just 63 rushing yards for the game—just 7 in the first half.

While the offense was rolling up points, the Plainfield defense was running down Joliet quarterback Jaxon Aubry and bottling up H-back Omari Ferguson. That duo combined for one first-half touchdown on a beautifully set screen pass, and Ferguson turned a short route into

a 63-yard gain just before halftime to set up their go-ahead score.

In the second half, Aubry was limited to completing short passes and his elusive play in the backfield finally was neutralized. In particular, a 17-yard third-quarter sack by Plainfield’s Nick Wood seemed to take any final air out of the Joliet West attack. More importantly, the Plainfield defense didn’t allow Joliet West inside their 40-yard line and consistently gave Miller a short field to play with in the second half.

Miller finished his final regular season game at Plainfield North by completing 17 of 24 passes for 377 yards and four touchdowns. He’ll get at least one more shot at a home game Friday.

Joliet West heads into the playoffs as the lowest seed in the 32-team Class 8A bracket and will travel to Lincoln-Way East Friday night at 7 p.m to take on the Griffins - the state’s top-ranked team.

Vacation home is not real money-maker You’ll probably make some money, but in most cases there will be several weeks during a year when it sits empty DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion of buying a vacation home, then renting it out when you’re not there?

J.P. DEAR J.P., I see nothing wrong with it, as long as you’re buying with cash and you’re also debt-free. A vacation home is a wonderful “extra” as you start building wealth. Remember though, it’s still basically a very large, very expensive toy. In most cases it will go up in value, and if you rent it, it might become something of a money-maker for you.

But here’s another side to vacation home rentals: You’ll probably make some money, but in most cas-

es there will be several weeks during a year when it sits empty. You’re not going to get rich renting it out. So, they’re not really great investment properties. What you’re talking about is more of a plan to offset the annual costs of your toy. If you look at it that way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

If you’re determined to go this route, be ready to deal with spills on the carpet and damage from your guests, along with general maintenance and repairs. There’s always something that needs attention when you own a property. But if you can handle all that emotionally and financially – and you’re not looking for it to be a big-time investment

that will make you rich – you’ll be fine.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are on Baby Step 2 of your plan. We have about $60,000 in debt left to pay off before we’ll be debt-free, and a household income of $140,000 a year. We have one child, but we would like to expand our family. We would have to do this using in vitro fertilization.

We’ve talked to a doctor, and he’s given us a ballpark figure of about $20,000 for the procedure. Should we wait until we’re debt-free to have this done?

JIM DEAR JIM, Babies are wonderful, important things. Having kids, even the thought of having kids, is a big emotional deal. But sometimes it can cause people to change their financial plans and directions.

I would urge you not to accept the first opinion and pricing model you receive on something like this. I’ve heard prices of $35,000, but that includes as many attempts as it takes until your wife becomes pregnant.

I’ve also heard of single attempts priced at $7,500 each. There are all kinds of options and guarantees, because they understand someone who is willing to do this really wants a baby.

If I’m in your shoes, I’m not accepting the idea that there’s one approach and one pricing structure to all this. I would explore other options, as far as doctors and clinics are concerned. Then, with your income, you could consider taking off a couple months from paying down debt and put some money toward the IVF. If it doesn’t work pay off a little more debt, pause the debt payoff, and try for a baby again.

Take some time, learn a little more, and go from there – always using cash for the endeavor.
