Plainfield audit presented to public eyes Annual financial report offered fiscal highlights

The village of Plainfield has opened its books for the public.

On Oct. 2, the village presented the financial annual audit report, for the fiscal year that ended on April 30, 2017 (FY17).

Financial highlights of this year’s report include: Total net position as of April 30, 2017 –$327,160,397, a decrease of $6,555,600.

Governmental activities recognized a decrease in net position of $7,453,048.

The Business-type activities recognized an increase of $897,448 in net position.

The total revenues, including transfers, of all governmental activities increased by $1.9 million.

Volunteers log thousands of hours PEMA members assist police in operations

Logging more than 4,300 volunteer hours, the members of the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) responded to calls in 2016, providing special details, emergency response support, and undergoing rigorous training throughout the year designed to keep the residents of Plainfield safe.

On Oct. 2, Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek presented the 2016 annual report on PEMA to the village board. The annual report was compiled by PEMA Deputy Director Ken Ruggles.

In 2016, PEAM volunteers spent 575 hours working emergency callouts, 178 hours on mutual aid, 1,076 hours working special details, and spent 1,404 hours in training.

According to the report, utilizing PEMA to assist during police callouts saves the village approximately $93,486.

Emergency callouts on 2016 included weather spotting, traffic control, search and rescue for missing elderly residents, and assisting on a water rescue.

The volunteer PEMA staff currently operates with about 25 people, and has 13 vehicles and eight trailers, and one ATV. Emergency management divisions across the state exist to prepare for emergencies that are inevitable, due to either natural or man-made disasters.

“We would like to keep our

numbers upward of 30,” Konopek told members of the village board.

“At one point, we were actually close to 50 a few years ago, but because of different times and things like that, our numbers have dwindled. But we’ve been very good to keep it above 25.”

PEMA is second in size in Will County only to the county’s op-

erated emergency management agency.

PEMA volunteers work with multiple areas of emergency preparedness and public safety.

“We have several components within EMA,” Konopek said. “We have separate divisions, we do have a search and rescue group that works with Will County EMA, that goes out and assists for missing individuals, whether they have Alzheimer’s as adults or missing children, they are very active in training and call outs.”

PEMA also has a bicycle unit that works alongside the police for special events, and a unit specially trained to work within our communications radio room at the EMA building during call outs or special events.

“They have a unique perspective as far as how to read the radios, how to read the radars that are on if it’s a severe weather event,” Konopek said. “Overall, we try to cross train everybody in everything.”

PEMA also has a specialty unit known as the Plainfield Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

“It’s actually a separate program for people who want to learn how to help their families, their workplaces, in the event we have another 1990 tornado, 1996 flood, something that just overwhelms us tremendously and we just can’t get to every neighborhood for a period of time,” Konopek said.

Over the past 12 years, the CERT team has been activated to support the village five times.

Trustee Bill Lamb said he was disturbed by the introduction to the report, where Ruggles wrote of PEMA volunteers, “Their fellow citizens sometimes even ridicule them while performing these duties. And yet, they come back, time and again, to help insure the safety of our community.”

Mosque gets last stamp of approval Center agrees to name change, parking committee

After weeks of media attention brought a packed house to the village hall, the final approval for a local mosque still had one more hurdle to jump.

On Oct. 2, the Islamic Foundation of the Southwest Suburbs (IFSWS) was granted final approvals for a special use permit for religious assembly at the building at 23616 W. Main Street.

The organization, which had previously filed under the name “Plainfield Community Center,” agreed to change its name as part of the final plans approved by the village.

But before the final vote, one trustee wanted to vocalize why he’d had issues with the project, which was seen by some as borderline religious discrimination when the village first rejected the application back in August.

Trustee Brian Wojowski voted no on the project, both on August and again in September when it special use permit came back to the board for reconsideration. Hundreds of people attended that meeting, with dozens of those visitors taking up more than two hours of public comment time, the majority speaking in favor of the proposed mosque.

Wojowski said he thought the village was playing with fire by placing stipulations on the mosque before granting an occupancy permit.

“My problem with this whole thing was the procedure, the process,” Wojowski said. “I again have the same concerns. I can ask the more experienced trustees on the board if they’re aware, at any time, if there has been a restriction on a name or a name change being asked of any organization or business in town. I’m not aware of one.”

Wojowski said the village may be overstepping by asking for such conditions.

“In the staff report, it says the applicant has agreed to the other conditions that are not related to the ordinances,” Wojowski said.

“I prefer to disagree with that because it is directly related to the ordinances, in my opinion, Trustee [Cally] Larson would not have changed her vote to allow this to come back today unless the criteria were met.”

Wojowski said he was worried the village was treating a religious organization differently than it would other applicants for special use permits.

“Under the equal terms it says no government should impose or implement a land use regulation in a manner that treats a religious assembly or institution on less than equal terms with a non-religious assembly or institution,” Wojowski said. “The equal terms I’m referring to are the name change… I do believe that this organization may be being treated differently because of this stipulation, and I cannot support that. I think it’s a landmine that the village is going to step on, and I would encourage

us to go back through the process, and come clean with no limitations on it.”

Trustee Larson, however, said the conditions enhance the site and the application. Larson said the name change would prevent confusion between the mosque, and Plainfield Township Community Center, and any future public community center established in the village.

“If the village of Plainfield were to wish to have a community center in the future, the name would be conflicting,” Larson said. “So, in order to provide some type of separation, that was part of the request.”

Larson also noted that the group has been operating as the Islamic Foundation of the Southwest Suburbs already, and continuing with that name would help with continuity. Larson said she met with the members of the group prior to suggesting the name change to make sure they were okay with it.

Wojowski noted that he thought the conditions were too restrictive, and perhaps an overreach of government power.

The final approvals passed the board by a vote of 4-2. Trustees Wojowski and Margie Bonuchi were the two no votes.

Ted Danson surprises Diageo employees In honor of National Vodka Day on Oct. 4, actor and environmentalist, Ted Danson, joined Smirnoff™ at the Diageo Facility in Plainfield to meet the more than 600 hardworking employees who are personally responsible for creating America’s favorite vodka. The facility is a state-of-the-art plant that produces many of Diageo’s most well-known brands.

Throughout the day, Danson joined Smirnoff for a behind-thescenes tour of the facility where he got to know a number of employees and learn about their role in the process. While on the tour, Danson learned how Smirnoff is ten-times filtered which requires careful attention to detail in order to create a quality vodka at an affordable price that is tasteless, odorless and smooth. The series of steps includes a sensory analysis test during which a team of certified employees vet the quality to achieve perfection in every batch.

As a result of this careful evaluation, Smirnoff No. 21 recently earned Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

“Many people don’t know that Smirnoff vodka is made right here in America,” said Danson when discussing his visit to the Diageo Plainfield Facility. “One of the things I love about Smirnoff Is that it never pretends to be something that it isn’t. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet with the men and women who have true passion for making this vodka each day.”

Following the tour, Danson and Smirnoff co-hosted a special barbecue and happy hour to celebrate the employees who put the quality into Smirnoff right here in America’s heartland. The Americanathemed celebration featured specialty cocktails including the “Red, White and BOOM,” as well as entertainment and backyard games.

“The fact that we’re with Ted in Plainfield, the town that has been home to Smirnoff for almost two decades, with the people who make it possible every day, is truly special,” said Jay Sethi, vice president, Smirnoff, while on-site at the facility. “These people who come to the Diageo Plainfield Facility each day and night are the reason why Smirnoff has been the most award-

During the tour, seven employees spoke with Danson to educate him on the critical steps that are taken to produce top-notch quality vodka and tell him a little about themselves.

Brandon Crow, a warehouse team member, shared with Danson while beaming with pride that he was inspired to join his father, a machine operator, at the Diageo Plainfield Facility, after seeing firsthand how much he loved his job.

Omar Hill, operations team member, has been an employee at the Diageo Plainfield Facility for more than 15 years and demonstrated to Danson just how well he knows the ins and outs of facility.

When asked what working for Smirnoff means to her, Christina Vargo, operations team member and U.S. Army veteran said, “Working here is a badge of honor, but the employees make this place what it is. There is so much rich culture and diversity at the Diageo Plainfield Facility and we all have an unbreakable bond.”

To conclude an eventful day at the Diageo Plainfield Facility, em-

ployees joined Danson for a toast to America’s number one vodka, to the people who make it and to celebrating Smirnoff being made in America. During the gathering, Ted mingled with employees and Diageo executives while enjoying his favorite vodka cocktail, the Filthy No. 21 Martini. Ted insisted that everyone drink responsibly and to savor each sip of cocktail, especially after he saw firsthand how much work goes into perfecting each batch.

“This Facility is Diageo’s premier manufacturing site in North America,” said Mark Laven, Vice President of Supply at the Plainfield Facility. “Next year will be the 20th Anniversary of Smirnoff coming to Plainfield. We’re proud to play a role in a brand that’s been America’s number one vodka for the last two decades.”

Village residents, community show local pride at 66th Annual Homecoming Parade ENTERPRISE STAFF REPORT A warm and breezy morning made for the perfect setting for the annual Plainfield Community Homecoming Parade on Saturday, Oct. 7.

This year marked the 66th annual parade, featuring students from throughout the district, as well as local government and civic leaders, groups, and organizations.

The parade drew thousands of attendees, with 111 regis-

tered entrees winding their way from near Village Hall, through the historic downtown, and ending at Plainfield Central High School.

Student entries included all four District 202 high schools and all seven middle schools, most of the 17 elementary schools, the Bonnie McBeth Learning Center and Plainfield Academy.

Plainfield Academy Principal Tod Schnowske served as Grand Marshal for the parade.

Medicaid is still a target of healthcare reform Debate is far from over and shifting to the states with an eye to funding

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE What’s going to happen to healthcare now that Senate Republicans have failed to pass their bill, which would have replaced much of the Affordable Care Act? In particular, what’s going to happen to Medicaid, the government’s largest insurance program, which covers 74 million Americans?

This is a good time to clarify what was at stake and may still be up for grabs in the months to come.

Despite its importance to so many people, Medicaid has always been the health system’s stepchild.

Many doctors and dentists have avoided taking Medicaid patients saying the program didn’t pay enough.

Until recently, editors haven’t been keen to feature stories about Medicaid believing that their audience was not interested in reading about people most likely to be on the program – the poor, the disabled, kids, and seniors who needed it to pay for their nursing home care.

Suddenly, media stories about cutting Medicaid and the loss of coverage to millions became news. “In the course of the debate, it’s become clear that Medicaid has tremendous public support.

There has been much more focus in this debate than I’ve seen in any health policy debate,” said Shannon Buckingham, vice president for communications at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington D.C., think tank.

So what is this program that affects so many and will undoubtedly surface again either later this year or next as a political football?

It was created in 1965 under the Johnson administration at the same time Medicare was passed. Unlike Medicare, though, which is a social insurance entitlement to which people contribute throughout their

working lives, Medicaid is a welfare program.

Those applying for coverage must meet strict asset and income tests, which mean they can’t own very much and they can’t earn a lot of money. Everyone who qualifies is guaranteed coverage.

The benefit package that all states must offer is generous, covering many services, including nursing home care and transportation to medical appointments.

It pays for care given at rural health clinics and federally qualified health clinics.

States can provide optional benefits such as prescription drugs, respiratory care, dental services, physical and speech therapy. Many states do.

States and the federal government share in the cost, and that’s where the fight in Congress comes in.

As medical costs have risen - with few controls on how high they can go - states have found that Medicaid is consuming larger shares of their annual budgets, often crowding out other needs like fixing roads.

The federal government continues to pay more too.

One solution for this dilemma is to change the way Medicaid is financed - from a state-federal matching arrangement into what’s called a block grant.

Under a block grant, the federal government will give a set amount of money to the states.

It’s a way reduce its healthcare expenditures while shifting more of the burden to the states to cover their residents who depend on Medicaid.

Conservatives have argued for years that giving the states a lump sum would mean they could manage their programs as they saw fit.

That’s why during debates on

Medicaid you hear phrases like “more flexibility” and “greater freedom.”

But others argue that flexibility and freedom come at a cost.

It could allow states to offer fewer benefits and impose restrictions that would make it harder for people to get care.

The Graham-Cassidy bill that was the Senate’s last attempt at remodeling the Affordable Care Act called for block grants and eliminated the ACA’s Medicaid expansion program that had provided healthcare to those with incomes between the poverty level and 138 percent of the poverty level.

This year that’s about $16,600 for a single person and about $34,000 for a family of four.

The expansion had brought some 12 million people onto the program.

The Medicaid debate is far from over and is shifting to the states.

Several have applied for waivers from the federal government to allow them more flexibility.

For example, a state might ask for permission to enroll Medicaid recipients in private insurance plans as Arkansas has done.

While a private market solution might sound good, it could mean that people on Medicaid would have to pay higher deductibles and other cost sharing.

Indiana has a waiver that requires recipients to make small monthly payments and maintain a savings account mostly funded by the state to pay for some of their care.

People who don’t make their payments may be locked out of coverage for a time.

Some states like Arizona and Kentucky are eyeing work requirements.

Most Medicaid recipients, however, are already working.

These potential changes raise important questions this last debate didn’t answer.

Who should get coverage? Should we control rising medical costs by reducing healthcare for those who can least afford it?

Maybe the next debate will give us the answers.

Prescribed burning season approaches Controlled burn season spans midOctober to mid-April when most vegetation and many animals are dormant Postcards were mailed recently to residents who live within 250 feet of forest preserves that will be included in the program. The postcards advise people to call the District if they have health issues involving smoke. Those who call are asked if they want to be placed in a Red Flag system to be called the day before and/or morning of the burn and advised of the pending fire.

Schools, medical facilities, airports and smoke sensitive buildings in the vicinity of the burn are also called as part of the Red Flag system and advised to take precautions, such as adjusting HVAC systems to recirculate internal air on the day of the burn.

Reverse 911 calls will be made to people who live within a half mile of a preserve the night before a burn is scheduled to take place.

However, calls will only go to a

landline unless a person registers a cell phone number with the Will County Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Notification System.

Fire and police departments and dispatch centers also are notified of prescribed burn activities in advance of a controlled burn.

Once all of the alerts have gone out, prescribed burns will begin if the weather isn’t too windy or wet for the burn to take place.

Prescribed burning is a way of mimicking the fires that used to occur naturally through lightning strikes or were set by Native Americans and early settlers. Once the region grew to be more inhabited, fire was suppressed and invasive and woody species were allowed to get a toehold on the land.

As the Forest Preserve District works to restore more and more acreage, prescribed or controlled

burning is one of the best ways to keep the land free of invasive species and woody plants. The heat of the fire destroys the unwanted plants or trees and lets the native species – which can handle the heat because their roots go deep – to survive and thrive.

The controlled burn season spans mid-October to mid-April when most vegetation and many animals are dormant. When burn-

ing takes place, not all areas of a preserve are included so animals have a path to flee.

The disturbance created by periodic fires is important in maintaining remnant oak/hickory forests and savannas because it prevents uncommon trees from overtaking the landscape.

Fire encourages the better establishment of native vegetation, which slowly displaces weeds.

Palinfield group working for change in Haiti Gala taking place at 6 p.m. Oct. 14, at Benedictine University at the Daniel L. Goodwin Hall of Business in Lisle

Many people want to bring the change they wish to see in the world. Not everyone goes on to carry out this aim. When New Life for Haiti picked one place in the world to make it better, the organization set out to make a difference.

The work of New Life for Haiti, a charity organization based out of Plainfield, will be highlighted during its annual gala, taking place at 6 p.m. Oct. 14, at Benedictine University at the Daniel L. Goodwin Hall of Business in Lisle.

The theme for this year’s event is “Let hope rise,” and the evening will offer small plates cocktails, live jazz, raffles and a short program.

“We’ve held the gala 12 years,” said Marnie Van Wyk, faith missions coordinator for New Life for

Haiti. “The purpose is to fund our projects for the year. Last year, because of Hurricane Matthew, the eye of the storm passed through Haiti. Last year, money went to our seed program distribution. It’s a rural area we focus on, and most people there are farmers. Their crops were destroyed during the harvest and plantings were destroyed for the following year.”

New Life for Haiti supports people in need by supplying food, and they provide them items such as rice, beans and oil. In addition to that, they’re building schools and homes, providing sponsorship opportunities, setting up medical clinics, giving shelter relief, and running an animal program, which they use to buy goats for people.

Most people of the Village of Marfranc, located on the southern peninsula of Haiti, live in huts with dirt floors where there’s no shelter,

and they salvage what they can find to survive.

Since Hurricane Matthew, New Life for Haiti has served as the sole charity providing relief in the region. Infrastructure problems prevent other organizations from getting in involved.

Though Hurricane Matthew has not served as the leading cause for death in the region, issues plaguing the people include cholera and the threat posed by contaminated water supplies, which has led to loss of life.

“There’s always the next challenge,” Van Wyk said.

The thrust of what the charity does is rooted in education, Van Wyk said.

“Last September, we opened our sixth school,” she said. “It was intended to be our model school.

Haiti has an antiquated system; the five schools have Haitian teachers and directors that use dated methods. We found that many children went on not learning how to read. We conducted training with American educators, and they

spent time with [the Haitian teachers and directors] teaching them methods.”

Students of Marfranc sat in on lectures prior to New Life for Haiti’s efforts. Classes previously held 70 children but had no books and no educational materials. Under the new model, class sizes are limited to 25 students, a teacher and an aide.

“We are managing things from here, [in Plainfield,]” Van Wyk said.

“That’s a challenge. We take several trips a year [to Marfranc,] and sometimes it’s our executive director, Fran Leeman, or its members of the board. We have three teams going in November.”

Van Wyk said it is difficult to pinpoint how many people are helped by the charity, and stressed that all are affected positively.

New Life for Haiti provides aid through its sponsorship program supporting 200 children, distributions of over 800,000 pounds of food, and services offered through medical clinics reach more than 1,000 people each week.

“Haiti is the only Third World country in the Western Hemisphere, and it’s so close to us,” she said. “The poverty is something you’d never imagine unless you went there. Most earn $1 per day, and 80 percent of children cannot afford to attend school. The parents cannot pay for kids to go to school, so we started a sponsorship program. This is the thrust of what we do. It’s $29 a month to get connected with a child.”

Van Wyk said the primary plan is to get the kids an education, so they can support themselves.

Proceeds raised during last year’s gala paid for roofing and education materials.

“We have a top secret project involving construction, and a way to help children who are in dire need,” Van Wyk said, adding that she cannot yet reveal further information.

That project will be announced during the gala’s short program.

This year’s fundraising goal is set at $100,000. Last year, New Life for Haiti brought in close to $120,000.

Per the report, governmental funds reported a combined ending fund balance of $28 million, an increase of $4.8 million over the prior fiscal year.

The total fund balance for the general fund was $10.8 million, an increase of $212,082 over the previous fiscal year.

The total fund balance for the capital projects Fund was $13.4 million, an increase of $4.6 million over the prior year.

In March of 2014, the Village Board revised its financial policies to include the ability to transfer unassigned general fund balance in excess of 40 percent to the capital fund. In FY17, $2.1 million was transferred from the general fund to the capital fund.

“We issued an unmodified opinion, which is the highest level of assurance that we provide to the village,” said Jim Savio of Sikich LLC of Naperville, the firm which conducted the audit.

Village officials were pleased with the annual audit.

“The one part that is particularly important to me is the amount of money we rolled over from the general fund to the capital fund, that was $2.1 million,” said Trustee Bill Lamb “The capital fund increased several million dollars over the past year, which is something that is very important, and allows us to do more projects in the future.”

Lamb lauded staff for their efforts to control expenses.

“We run a very big business,” Lamb said. “It’s a very comprehensive business, this report does an excellent job of describing… where the money goes and what we do.”

The 139-page report can be found on the village’s website, at plainfield-il.org/pages/agendasmeetings.

Tree Purchases The board approved a motion to waive bidding, and authorize the purchase and installation of approximately 800 parkway trees. The trees will come from the Suburban Tree Consortium, at a cost not to exceed $200,000.

The village is about 18 months behind schedule on replacing those parkway trees, which were damaged or killed by invasive emerald ash borer pests. Thousands of trees still need to be replaced throughout the village.

“Besides budgetary constraints, it’s actually finding adequate

trees,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said of the delay. “The suburban tree consortium does a wonderful job and we’re one of the participants in that program, and it gives us access to some fantastic trees.”

Murphy said development in the area slowed down right around the time that the ash borers hit. But at that same time, nurseries were planting fewer trees for parkway use, meaning that most of the inventory available consists of trees larger than the village is looking to install.

“Trying to get trees in has been something of a challenge for us.”

“Also, we want to make sure that we’re doing a more robust job in having diversity in our trees, so that we don’t run into a similar situation as we’re seeing with the ash borers.”

Murphy said that while the large efforts to take down those ash trees destroyed by the pests is mostly over, there are still many areas of town where additional trees have yet to be removed.

Murphy said the process to finally get rid of all the diseased trees and replace them will likely take several more years.

Lower DuPage Watershed Coalition The board signed off on a resolution to continue participation in the Lower DuPage River Watershed Coalition.

Staff has been actively involved in the coalition for several years.

Recently, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has required communities throughout the state to participate in watershed groups.

Participation means that the village has a voice in regulation development and related financial impacts, balancing regulations, and access to federal and state grant funding.

The village joined the coalition, which is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, in 2012.

The 2017 contribution to the coalition from the village of Plainfield is $26,515.24.

2017 Seal Coat Program The board approved a contract for the 2017 seal coat program, with Denler Incorporated of Mokena, at a cost of $191,365.45.

The village received three bids for the project.

“How frequent is that, that really disturbs me. It’s a heck of a service, they ought not to be abused,” Lamb said.

Chief Konopek said that while those workers do endure ribbing from the public from time to time, they are a dedicated staff who don’t let the abuse phase them.

“Unfortunately, all though they are strictly a volunteer work force, and a great volunteer work force, people have absolutely no idea that they are not the police,” Konopek said. “you’d be amazed at some of the ridicule our police officers take out there. So, when they’re out there doing traffic con-

trol at a crash site, a gas leak, a structure fire, a train derailment, people think they’re the police and people think that they can yell out whatever they want out of the windows because they’re inconvenienced for a moment’s time. Our folks are excellent as far as letting that run off them like rain water.”

Konopek noted that seeing the worst of people happens less frequently than seeing the best that Plainfield has to offer.

Village officials said they recognize the important work that PEMA and its volunteers do for the community.

“It’s a tremendous asset for the village, and hopefully we’ll get you a new building, it will be an even better asset,” Lamb said.

The village is considering con-

struction of a new PEMA building. That site will be located inside village-owned property along Van Dyke Road. Part of that property is currently being developed as a PACE park and ride facility. The village is in the process of creating a public-private partnership to develop the rest of the site, to include a new PEMA facility.

PEMA is currently conducting an open enrollment period for new members.

Tigers win D.202 catfight Plainfield North defeats Plainfield Central in ‘Dig Pink’ night battle

It would have been easy to mistake Thursday’s volleyball match between Plainfield Central at Plainfield North for a playoff game.

There was a lot of energy from the crowd and the players.

Both sides were wearing pink uniforms to help raise breast cancer awareness in the “Dig Pink” game and plenty in the crowd were joining in on the fun.

The Tigers, with their backs to the wall, rallied from a slow game 3 start and scored five of the last six points to win the decisive match, defeating the Wildcats 19-25, 25-18, 25-23.

“We were a little nervous in the third set,” said Tigers assistant coach Matt Slechta, filling in for head coach Tracey Marshall. “We focused on staying aggressive and spreading the offense.”

The Tigers (11-10) struggled early with consistency in the first game and faltered down the stretch. In the second game, the Tigers seized control by reinforcing their front line defense

and by cutting down on unforced errors.

Slechta pointed to senior hitters Madeline Dieter and Madison Ryley as the key to their revived defensive attack.

“The seniors really stepped up for us and made those plays that we needed,” he said.

In game 3, the Tigers came off a timeout down 11-6 and needing a rally to get them back in the match against the Wildcats (14-7). Dieter and Ryley answered the call with a kill each as the Tigers rattled off four straight points to make it a game again. Both Dieter and Ryley had 10 kills and a service ace in the match.

The Tigers had a slow start to their season and have recently found their stride. Slechta believes that a game like this with its playoff intensity will be valuable for the future. “To go into the Mizuno Cup this weekend and into the playoffs with this kind of momentum is great. It’ll help carry our offense.”

Romeoville crashes East homecoming party

On a wet and windy Friday night, Romeoville played rude house guests as the Spartans

secured their first victory of the season with a, 14-12, win over Plainfield East on the Bengals’ homecoming night.

“It really wasn’t a huge win for the program, it was a huge win for those kids that came all sum-

mer,” Romeoville head coach Oliver Gibson praised. “They really deserved that win and I hope this makes them realize that it’s not how you start something, it’s how you finish it.”

In a first half that was dominated by the unfavorable conditions and stingy defense, Romeoville (1-6) and Plainfield East (1-6) both had a hard time finding any sort of offensive rhythm throughout the first two quarters. Up until Plainfield running back, Nicholas Pratscher’s, 57-yard run with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, neither team legitimately threatened to break the scoreless

deadlock.

Having seemingly converted on the rare red zone opportunity with a 13-yard touchdown run, the Bengals’ score was wiped out by a costly holding penalty. Eventually Plainfield had to settle for a, 3-0, halftime lead thanks to Justin Ayres’ 22-yard field goal.

Out of the break, the Spartan defense came up with a huge interception to kill a promising Bengal drive to open the half.

Thanks to the big defensive play, the Romeoville offense was able to capitalize on the momentum shift and drive 70-yards for a score. A pair of long plays by running back Daytwone Burge and

receiver Chris Kerwin, helped set up Spartan quarterback, Cam Neely’s, two-yard touchdown run to take a 7-3 lead with five minutes left in the third.

Plainfield immediately responded to the Romeoville score, with a 59-yard catch-and-run by receiver Billy Pierce and eventual three-yard touchdown run by Elijah Hickman. Within a matter of seconds the Bengals had retaken a, 9-7, lead over the Spartans.

However, the Romeoville defense once again came up with a game changing play in the opening stages of the fourth and final quarter.

After a calamitous series of events by the Spartan offense that ended in a fumble giving Plainfield the ball at midfield, Spartan corner back Sir Muhammad returned an interception 57-yards for the score and, 14-9, lead.

“I’m so proud of our defense and the continuous pressure that they put on Plainfield’s offense all night,” Gibson sang.

“I’ve been on the other end of this situation many times before, so we’re not getting carried away. We know they made some mistakes, but we just have to use this performance to get some consistency over these next two weeks.”

Plainfield was able to cut the score to, 14-12, with just over three minutes left in the game with another Ayres 22-yard field goal. However, with just one minute to go, Ayres’ potentially game winning 35-yard field goal fell short and the Spartans were able to ice the game away for their first win of the season.

“We’re not thinking of ending the season just yet,” Gibson said.

“We got to the point where we were losing games big and losing players to injuries. Now we’ve got two games left, with all hands on deck, and that’s all that we are focusing on right now.”

The Romeoville Spartans will look to keep winning next Friday night, when they return home to face Plainfield Central. While the Plainfield East Bengals will hope to bounce back from the sobering homecoming defeat on the road at Plainfield North.

Plainfield East coach Terrance Terry was unavailable for comment after the game.

North heads to playoffs after win over South

Plainfield North traveled to crosstown rival Plainfield South last week and used a sensational defensive effort to earn their fifth win of the season and a trip to the postseason 31-10 in foul weather conditions.

The Tigers (5-2) got on the board first following an interception from defensive back Pat Miller late in the first quarter setting North up with a short field. Tiger quarterback Brady Miller fired a strike over the middle of the field to a streaking Zach Nadle who found the end zone 35-yards later and putting the Tigers up 7-0. A blocked punt on the next possession set North kicker Nick Wood up for a 27-yard field goal he made good to open the second quarter with a 10-0 lead.

“Maturity showed up,” Wildcats coach Erik Vogt said. “Tactically, we had a poor showing in a few spots. But you have to give Plainfield North credit. They wanted it more.”

Maturity has been a kind of watchword for the team with only one senior on the roster.

There are many underclassmen on the team who aren’t used to this kind of pressure.

“The older players feed off this and they’re under more pressure because they’re playing for what might be their last game,” Vogt said.

The maturity will help bolster the talent base, which has a strong anchor in sophomore hitter Taylor Landfair, who had 18 kills and two service aces in the match. And even the 6’4 star had moments of uncertainty

“Our defense came to play tonight and we knew every opportunity would count with the wet conditions we played in tonight,” said North coach Tim Kane. “Anytime you’re on the road you want to get ahead especially against a tough rival like South.”

South got on the board after an 80-yard drive ended with a Zachary Sutphin 21-yard field goal drew the Cougars to within a score before the half 10-3 but North would open the game up midway through the third quarter.

Tiger senior Shane McGrail fell on a Plainfield South fumble in their own end zone after pinning the Cougars at their own 2-yard line with a great punt.

North jumped up 17-3 and followed it up on their next possession with a 3-yard touchdown from tail back Dillon McCarthy essentially closing the door up 24-3 with 11 minutes left to play.

South would finally get into the end zone midway through the 4th quarter when Cougar quarterback Cody Dieball capped a nine play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak for South’s final score of the game 24-10.

A late 20-yard score from McCarthy rounded out the final score 31-10 and put North on track to make another run in the IHSA playoffs in hopes of repeating last season’s success.

“There is a lot of football to play still and while it’s great to know we will be in the playoffs, we want to get better every week,” Kane said after the win. “(South is) a good football team over there and if we want any shot in the postseason we will have to bring this defensive effort day in and day out.

“I am proud of our guys and the effort they put out but we are a long way away from our goals still.”

Former Wildcat heads Lewis bowling team Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced Wednesday (Oct. 4) the hiring of Scott Taylor as the Director of Bowling and Athletic Communication Assistant.

“Scott Taylor will add to our intercollegiate athletic department,” Planek said. “His deep knowledge of high school bowling and his relationships with numerous coaches and prospects will help our recruitment of new students along with his Lewis undergraduate experience.

“He will be a great ambassador for our newest sport. His award winning journalistic skills will aid in our athletic communications department.”

Taylor, a 2007 graduate of Lewis University, graduated with a degree in Journalism and a minor in coaching. During his time at Lewis he was the Sports Editor for “The Flyer,” Lewis’ student newspaper, men’s basketball manager and participated in numerous intramural sports, including bowling.

After graduating he was the Athletic Facilities Maintenance & Game

Management Graduate Assistant.

“I have loved everything about Lewis, especially the athletic department, since the first time I went to a basketball game when I was a senior in high school,” Taylor said. “Lewis athletics has a great tradition and I am honored to be a part of it.

“I am excited to be back at Lewis and am looking forward to the opportunity ahead in the different roles. I feel my experience and knowledge of the university will help me succeed in both positions.”

Taylor has spent the past 11 years covering high school sports in the Chicagoland area, including

four as the sports editor for Voyager Media Publications, and won 12 awards from the Illinois Press Association.

Because of his love and knowledge of the sport, Taylor created a website dedicated to high school and collegiate bowling throughout the state of Illinois. The website features state rankings and results from across the state, as well as interviews with bowlers and player profiles. His years covering bowling has helped him develop strong relationships with parents, bowlers and coaches throughout the state.

“I am grateful for the opportunity Lewis and Dr. Planek have given to me to achieve a dream of mine,” Taylor said. “I also want to thank my friends and family for their support throughout the entire process.

“I am looking forward to promoting the bowling program as well as all of the athletic teams to the best of my ability. I’m eager to help the future student athletes be successful both on the lanes and off.”

Where should mom put money for tot’s future?

A nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea DEAR DAVE, I have a savings account for my two-year old that has $5,000 in it, and about half of that is in gold. I’m going to save for his college separately, and give this to him to help start his life after school. Is there a better place to put this other than a traditional savings account?

LAURA DEAR LAURA, First of all, you should not invest in gold. Gold is a very volatile, very dangerous investment.

I don’t have a dime invested in gold, and I would strongly suggest that you not invest in it, ei-

ther. If you take a look at the lifelong track record on gold it will scare you to death.

For the time being, you can leave it all in a traditional savings account. But if he’s not going to use it for many, many years you could move it into a conservative mutual fund. In fact, you started when he was at such young age, a nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea.

When he gets a little older, he can start adding to it himself from the money he makes from odd jobs and chores and such.

After 15 years or so, thanks to your foresight and his contri-

butions, he’ll probably wind up with a pretty nice chunk of cash.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, Why do you recommend paying off debts from smallest to largest when doing the debt snowball?

MICHAEL DEAR MICHAEL,

Lots of people think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach.

This seems to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago if those people could do math they wouldn’t be drowning in debt.

Debt is not a mathematical problem, it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest — even though it may be mathematically incorrect — is that modifying your behavior and inspiring you to get out of debt is more important than the math. Your probability of becoming wealthy has a lot more to do with your behavior than any sort of financial so-

phistication or academic degree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next largest debt. When you pay that one off — and you’ve wiped out two debts — it energizes you. According to the American Diabetes Association, as men and women age their risk for type 2 diabetes increases. Diabetes develops when the amount of sugar in a person’s blood is too high. When a person has type 2 diabetes, his or her body does not respond to insulin, a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose, a type of sugar, in the blood. Aging makes the body less accepting of sugars, thereby making aging men and women more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. But just because aging is an uncontrollable risk factor for type 2 diabetes does not mean

men and women over 50 cannot take steps to reduce their risk. The ADA advises that routine exercise and a healthy diet that is low in saturated and trans fat and moderate in salt and sugar can help men and women stay healthy and lower their risk for type 2 diabetes. A healthy meal plan should include lean protein, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit. In addition, men and women young and old who want to decrease their risk for type 2 diabetes should avoid sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, sports drinks, sweet tea, and fruit punch.

How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy.

However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.

Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.

A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s dis-

ease.

In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.

START EXERCISING THE BRAIN EARLY ON A study published in 2012 in the British

Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion.

READ MORE BOOKS Reading can open individuals up to new

vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial.

HIT THE GYM Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.

SUPPLEMENT WITH DHA DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.

CHALLENGE THE MIND Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines.

Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain.
