Plainfield senior earns full ride from Marines $180K scholarship awarded to only 300 students nationwide

Tribute Memorial unveiled at Settlers’ Park during Memorial Day ceremony

Plainfield East High School senior Bailey Placek will study chemistry and engineering due to a full-ride scholarship he earned from the U.S. Marines. Placek will enlist in the Marines and attend college at Plainfield Loyola University eaST high thanks in part to his School Senior excellent grades. He Bailey PlaceK will simultaneously take part in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program at Northwestern University and graduate college as a Second Lieutenant in the Marines. Placek is one of only 300 students nationwide to earn the $180,000 scholarship, according to U.S. Marines Staff Sgt. Pablo Chavez. “Bailey is an extremely devoted individual,” Chavez said. “If he had not gotten this scholarship, he was fully ready to go serve his country.” Placek said he knew he’d get the scholarship. “There wasn’t much doubt in my mind,” he said. “I wanted it. That closes the discussion.” He learned about his achievement in April after a rugby practice. Of course, more work went into the final outcome than Placek suggests. Placek learned about the NROTC program and scholarship as a high school sophomore, and it fit with his goals.

n addition to honoring those who died serving their county, Plainfield’s Memorial Day ceremony also celebrated the new designation of a 27-year-old monument. Despite the threat of rain, residents came out to support the nation’s veterans and witness the unveiling of the Tribute Memorial, which was relocated from Plainfield Central to its new home in Settlers’ Park.
