Park board hears residents’ input on district’s future

T

wo reports presented to the Plainfield Park District’s Board of Commissioners last week identified an indoor recreation facility or facilities as a priority for the district’s future. First, a group of community leaders recommended that the district seek one large or multiple smaller indoor recreation centers to serve the community. Then, a consulting firm cited a lack of indoor space in its update to the district’s master plan.

Memorial Day is Monday, but residents of Plainfield and surrounding areas don’t have to wait through the long weekend to show their support for the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces. The fourth annual Wounded Warrior 5K will step off Saturday in Settlers Park, 24000 W. Lockport St., Plainfield. The annual event raises funds for Operation Welcome You Home and the veterans who look to the organization for support. Started in 2012, the fundraiser attracted almost 500 runners and walkers during the inaugural race. The event has grown since then, with more than 1,400 people participating in last year’s 5K. Because of its popularity, Plainfield police said they are expecting a large number of participants and onlookers. The race will start at 8 a.m. near village hall, and several roads near Settler’s Park and the Wallin Woods Subdivision will be closed during the event. Village Center Drive between Lockport Street and Van Dyke Road, Van Dyke Road from Lockport Street to its south end, Ottawa Street from Van Dyke to Ira Jones Middle School, and Wallin Drive at Ira Jones Middle School will be closed beginning at 7:30 a.m. the day of the race. Additionally, parking will be prohibited. “We anticipate all roadways will reopen by 10:30 a.m.,” Cmdr. Ken Ruggles said in a release. “However..., once the bulk of runners/walkers have cleared the area some roadways may open earlier.” For more information on the race, visit www..welcomeyouhome.org.
