100 years of change

The Plainfield Historical Society hosted a program Nov. 12 to document “100 years of change.” The event featured live interviews with residents of all ages and was recorded for the historical archives. The society wanted different age groups to help show the diversity of ages and changes in the community. Interviewees were asked several questions by program chair Jean Helm. Questions included things like, “What was your first job,” “What did your parents do,” “Where were you when JFK was assassinated,” among others. Helm asked several questions to Helen Sauvageau. Sauvageau’s first job was at the Plainfield Granite Company, which she said she liked, although it was difficult. She also served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation mechanic. “I had my training in Tennessee, and it was good,” she added. She never served overseas, saying women usually did not leave the country for their work. Helm also asked about Sauvageau’s family and memories from her childhood. Her father was a farmer, and the family owned horses, cows, sheep and other farm animals. Sauvageau said many of her family members lived in the same house, including grandparents, aunts and uncles. Helm also asked if she had a phone or radio. Sauvageau said she got all her news from neighbors, and her family didn’t have a radio. Helm asked if she remembered where she was when John F. Kennedy was killed. “Of course, I do,” Sauvageau replied.
