Heritage Grove and Ira Jones Middle School parents and students heard a presentation about internet and social media safety Oct. 14. Special Agent Wesley Tagtmeyer gave the presentation at Heritage Grove Middle School. “Now our kids are communicating with strangers every day online,” Tagtmeyer said to begin his presentation. He added that a good portion of children’s lives is spent online through gaming, texting or social networking. Tagtmeyer gave several tips to families, including putting a piece of paper over any webcams, not allowing children to have access to devices overnight and putting the computer in a central room, instead of the child’s bedroom. He said many parents approach him and are intimidated by social networks but stressed that educating themselves is the first step. He advised parents to create a Facebook page or social media account to learn how different sites work and what children are doing. “A lot of times people think the internet is completely bad, but that’s not the case,” Tagtmeyer said. He gave some examples of “good things” including research, Wikipedia and educational sites. However, he still emphasized the “pitfalls” of the online world. The presentation featured several videos and ads warning against online predators, sexting and
