By Christine M. Foushi STAFF rePOrTer Some Downers Grove residents are standing up for the historic Edwards House, a 19th century Victorian home they say is in danger of being developed.

“Our community will lose a gem,” Theresa Kalut said during the Sept. 2 village council meeting. Kalut, a long-time village resident and former business tenant of the home at 942 Maple Ave., was one of several who expressed similar concerns at during the meeting.

The Edwards House and its neighbor, 936 Maple Ave., are currently listed by a realtor that is currently seeking development proposals for the properties it described as a “prime development parcel.” The property, in foreclosure and owned by an out-ofstate bank, is listed as “contingent” on the realtor’s website.

The Edwards House was previously converted for business use, where tenants included local businesses such as Michael’s Driving School.

During the Aug. 19 village council meeting, Ken Learner of Downers Grove and a member of the Pierce Downer’s Heritage Alliance presented information about the Edwards House to the council.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said Thursday it filed charges against a Chicago woman accused of stealing Illinois Link cards from two disabled residents of the Ray Graham Association.

Class topics will include combating gangs, crime scene investigation and evidence collection, statement analysis, financial identity theft, homicide investigation, traffic enforcement, and SWAT operations. Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to fire a weapon

under the guidance of our range officers during range night. This part of the course is optional.

The classes will held Wednesday evenings, starting Oct. 1 running through Dec. 3, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Westmont Police Department, 500 N. Cass Ave. Class will not be held during Thanksgiving week.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age, pass a criminal background check, and sign a waiver and hold harmless document. Registration will be limited to 25 participants with preference given to people living or working in the village of Westmont.

When asked if he being Republican and his wife being a Democrat is similar to a couple where one is a Cubs fan and one is a Sox fan, he chuckled “maybe so.”

He said there needs to be bipartisanship, and he would work with both Democrats and Republicans.

When asked about his view of the Second Amendment, Rauner said gun ownership is protected under the Second Amendment, and it is necessary to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals.

After Another Round, Rauner headed over to Ballydoyle, his final stop in Downers Grove, before heading out to Aurora.

Council hears plans for facilities’ improvements Four proposals include variety of upgrades, new construction to improve village hall, police department

The future of Downers Grove’s municipal facilities was the major topic of conversation at the Sept. 9 village council meeting.

Earlier this year, the council discussed and provided general direction to move forward on facilities planning, said Deputy Village Manager Mike Baker.

Baker presented four possible options in maintaining or relocating village facilities during a roundtable discussion.

These plans are in the early stages, and have both pros and cons associated with all options, he said.

As outlined in the facilities >> history, from page 1 The house has historic connections to the village, Lerner said. It was the first house in Downers Grove to feature indoor plumbing, and despite having been converted from residential to commercial, it has been nicely restored, he added.

Last year an architectural and historical survey was completed in several areas of the village, including the Maple Avenue and Main Street corridors.In its finding, 942 Maple was identified as a significant property potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and designation as a local landmark.

Lerner said the Pierce Downer’s Heritage Alliance would be willing to consult with the new owner and get the word out that there is a strong community commitment to this house.

Lerner and Downers Grove Historical Society President Tom Casey recently met with the David Sosin,attorney representing the prospective buyer, FFM-DG Development, and two members of the architectural firm working on the redevelopment plans of the property.

Sosin said no closing date is set, but added he expected a deal to be completed by the end of the year.

Downers Grove Planning Manager Stan Popovich said the village has met with a potential developer but no plans have been submitted for review.

Baker said the biggest operational challenge the police department faces is evidence storage. While complying with all state laws on how evidence is processed, storage is spread across numerous rooms within the building and inefficient, Baker added. In addition, meeting room privacy is an operational need that is not addressed in option one.

Commissioner Geoff Neustadt said the police department is too small, adding the roof has leaked for many years, which makes conducting interviews difficult. The police department either needs to be fixed or moved, he added.

The third option proposed construction of a new village hall and police department on the existing downtown site, Baker said. Costs are estimated at $36 million to $41 million,

and would be paid for using drug seizure money and existing revenues.

The fourth and final option is broken in to two phases.

Phase one would include the village acquiring 9.8 acres of land on Ogden Avenue and Lacey Road, and constructing three facilities, Baker said.

The land, currently owned by Aldi, would allow the police department, fleet maintenance and Fire Station No. 1 to relocate on the back portion of that land.

The front of the property would be developed commercially.

Baker noted relocating the fire station would improve overall response times for fire and emergency medical services, particularly to the northwest area of the village. Drug seizure money, existing revenues, and the Ogden Avenue TIF would help pay for this project, which

According to the village’s historical preservation ordinance, to initiate a historic district designation, at least 51 percent of all property owners in the proposed district must consent to the designation.

Lerner said the group he is working with has started the process to deem Maple Avenue a historical district. The majority of property owners on MapleAvenue will need to sign a consent form to create the historic district, he added.

There is still a long road ahead. Once consent is gathered, the request would have to be submitted to the village’s architectural design review board, which will then make a recommendation to the village council.

Time is critical said resident Tom Nybo, who created the Facebook site “Help save 942 Maple in Downers Grove.” He said the group also will meet with someone from Oak Park with a background in creating historic districts.

The potential sale of this property has drawn a lot of attention from inside the community and beyond, said Nybo, whose Facebook page has reached more than 600 Likes since it was created July 7. He said he is dedicated to getting the word out.

110 flyers were passed out to the area around 942 Maple encouraging those to speak out at the village council’s Sept. 2 meeting, and one neighbor after another did just that.

Tully said there is little disagreement that the Edwards House should be preserved.

“Community voice is powerful and can lead to change,” he said.

“The community can invoke change.”

Linda and Robert King, who live next-door to the Edward House, have lived there for 50 years.

“We have strong memories of that house for those who have lived there over the last 50 years,” he said. “We hope the work of Tom [Nybo] will find some way to save this house.”

New resident Christine Martin, purchased a home on Maple last year, and after restoration and rehab, finally moved in a couple of weeks ago.

“The amount of people that come to our door and say‘thank you for saving this house’ is numerous,” Martin said. “The majority of people are so encouraging and thankful for saving it.

“I think a lot of people care about this and we really need to speak out,” she added. “The Edwards House is amazing and not in decay.”

Martin said she hopes it does not come down because it would be a waste.

Officers with the Naperville Police Department met with

authorities of the Ray Graham Association on Nov. 5, 2013, and advised officer a Illinois Link card went missing from a safe in the Naperville location.

Several weeks later, officers with the Downers Grove Police Department met with authorities of the Ray Graham Association regarding the theft of an Illinois Link card from the Downers Grove location.

An investigation into the thefts led authorities to Bell. It is alleged that in her capacity

as an administrator for the association, Bell had access to the safes at the its satellite homes. The charges against Bell allege that took the Link cards from both locations and used the cards for personal purchases, such as groceries and gasoline. Bell is accused of spending almost $300 on each of card.

Bell’s next court appearance is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 20 in front of Judge Robert Kleeman.

Deuce takes first at Chicagoland

It was one move by the No. 2 car going three-wide that put Brad Keselowski in position to win the MyAFibStory.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.

With Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick battling for the lead on Lap 252, Keselowski forced his way in between the two cars off Turn 2 and grabbed the lead.

“I just saw a hole and I went for it,” Keselowski said. “I’m not really sure what to say. I don’t really know what happened.I just know we got to the lead. There was traffic and I was just digging and in the zone.The recorder was turned off, so I don’t remember what happened.

“I had my head down doing all I could do. We had a great Miller Lite Ford Fusion that I knew from the start would be good, but, man, it was really awesome the last few runs.We really dialed it in and the (No.) 2 crew did an excellent job.”

Keselowski now has his spot secured for the second round of the new Chase Grid system, which will see four drivers eliminated after two more races.

It was the fifth win of the season for Keselowski, tying his most wins in a season, but most importantly, it set him up to continue to go after his second

of a hall pass for the next two, which I’m very appreciative.

But those other seven, nobody cares that we won Chicago, nobody cares that we won Richmond or the other three races. It keeps resetting. You have to reset yourself. You have to keep developing the car and

pushing as a team, whether it’s on pit road, the car handling, spec, whatever it might be, or driver tactics.

“So, I want to be thankful for today, but I know there’s a long ways to go. Today was about as much of a statement as you can make on a week one with ten

weeks to go. I don’t want to understate it but certainly don’t want to overstate it. It’s a hard balance.”

Benet head coach Pat New says Brad Sznajder is one of the best running backs in the state, and the senior demonstrated why last Friday at chilly and wet Notre Dame.

Neither wind nor rain nor the Dons’ defense could slow down Sznajder, who busted loose for 296 yards on 25 carries and touchdown runs of 1 and 53 yards as the Redwings scored a 23-0 victory in the ESCC opener for both clubs.

Sznajder afterward credited his linemen for being able to put together a big night.

“Our offensive line has just done a great job this year, dominating the line of scrimmage, giving me a seam to squeeze through and that’s all I have to do,” he said. “I give all the credit to them.”

“It’s a typical Brad Sznajder game,” New said. “He’s a great competitor and a great athlete.

He’s the best running back I’ve ever been around.”

Benet certainly has one of best, if not the best, brother combos in the state, to boot. Sznajder’s younger brother, Jack, continues to impress at quarterback. He added seven completions for 64 yards, including a screen pass in the third quarter to his brother that went for 37 yards.

“I think it’s going really well,”said the sophomore, who took over after Iowa-bound Jack Beneventi transferred from Benet to Fenwick before his senior season. “The team has really welcomed me and made me feel at home. It’s been an easy adjustment.”

Playing in the same backfield with his brother is a dream come true.

“It’s childhood memories,” Jack said. “It’s a lot of fun getting to play with my brother.”

“There’s nothing cooler than this,” Brad added. “These first three weeks have been so special and it’s just great sharing it with him.”

The Redwings haven’t missed a beat on special teams so far in in 2014 despite the graduation of all-state placekicker John Duvic last season. Junior Matt Tromp has taken over the kicking duties, and he booted three field goals against the Dons:

Sznajder’s 1-yard run with 17 seconds to go in the first quarter following a 91-yard drive enabled the Redwings (3-0, 1-0) to grab a 10-0 lead.

“All summer long (during practices and 7-on-7s) we just watched him run, we cheered and it was fun to watch,” New said.“He continues to entertain.”

But Brad Sznajder said he’s being entertained by the stellar play of the Redwings’ defense.

“I think our defense has been

extremely dominant,” he said.

“They’ve been huge for us just keeping opponents with a shutout, other games (to) just low scores. They give us great field position and they always have our back.”

Brad Sznajder put the game away for Benet early in the fourth with his 53-yard run, breaking several tackles on his way to the end zone.

“I like 3-0 first of all,” New said, “but I just like the way they play together. They’re a scrappy team, they’re gritty, and it’s all how they play together and they just do a great job with that, and that’s what I’m so pleased with.

“One thing I’ve always known about this team is they were jelling back in June. I’ve told them that whenever the game is close, I have complete faith in you. You

guys are going to find a way, and that’s kind of what we’ve talked about all summer, finding a way.

I have complete confidence in them that they’ll continue to work hard.”

RESPECT After finishing second, just ahead of rookie Kyle Larson, NASCAR veteran Jeff Gordon went over to Larson’s car and said something to the young driver, who had nearly missed his first career win.

“I told him just how proud I am of him,” Gordon said.“I think this kid is the real deal. He’s going to be a star in this series for a long time. I really wanted to see him win because I like him and I know he’s going to win a lot of races, but I also didn’t want to

see those other guys win. I’m a big fan. I like seeing young guys out there driving like that. That’s so much fun. That’s what this sport is all about. I just want to let him know what a great job I thought he did.”

Larson said Gordon also gave him pointers on restarts.

“He came down to give me some advice, which was nice,” Larson said. “I know Jeff thinks a lot about me and I think a lot about him, too. It was fun racing him. I definitely wanted to beat him. I was trying all I could. Just tried a little bit too hard. I was running probably an inch or two off the wall all day and finally got into it. But, yeah, it’s nice whenever Jeff comes around or I read all the stuff he says about me. It’s cool.

“I don’t know if it’s strange or not. It’s just really, really cool.

Guys you look up to since, heck, Jeff has been racing the Cup Series as long as I’ve been alive.

It’s only going to last so much longer until I’m kind of here and everybody knows, I guess.”

This has happened to some big name websites, such as nytimes.com, msn.com, yahoo. com, cnn.com and foxnews. com. How about some more: Spotify.com, google.com, usnews.com and many more.

Some of the malvertising is so advanced, you don’t even need to click on the ad to get the virus. Simply, being on the site when the ad is visible is enough.

Commissioner David Olsen, on the other hand, stated option four is the least appealing plan and would like to work toward combining options one and two.

He said he has not found much support for building new facilities and the excellent services the village provides are more of an interest to the residents. He agreed there are benefits that go with the other options, but the high cost of those options scared him.

Resident Bill Wrobel said recommended sending the options to the community as a referendum to gage residents’ opinions.

Anthony Cheng asked several questions, including how long would maintenance extend the life of the facilities; why does option one not include drug seizure money as a form of revenue; and what would be the reoccurring operational costs after work is completed for each option.

Tully thanked Cheng for his questions, noting they are a good starting point for a frequently asked questions forum, as future facilities planning discussions are forthcoming.

Will sizzling summer lead to a swoon for stocks?

So much for the summer doldrums! August 2014 was the best August for stocks in 14 years. The Dow gained 3.6 percent on the month to 17,098; the S&P 500 took out the psychologically important 2,000 level, rising 3.8 percent to 2003. Since the March 2009 low, the S&P 500 is up a staggering 195 percent, making the current bull market the fourth-best since 1928 in terms of both duration and magnitude, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

The NASDAQ rose 4.8 percent on the month to 44-64, a 14-1/2 year high and just 11.5 percent below the all-time closing high reached on March 10, 2000.

Through August, the S&P 500 is up 8.4 percent, which has gotten some worried that the sizzling summer could lead to a September swoon for stocks.

The fearful bears point out that stocks are trading at pretty hefty valuations. On the last trading day of August, the S&P 500 traded on Friday at 19 times its companies’ earnings for the past year, above the historical average of 15.5.

Another worrisome fact: the latest survey (through the week of August 27th) of individual investors completed by the American Association of Individual Investors showed that 51.9 percent of respondents are bullish, the

Meanwhile,bearish sentiment dropped to 19.2 percent, below 20 percent for the first time this year.

These market sentiment surveys are often called “contraindicators,” because when regular ol’ investors like us start to feel bullish, we are usually wrong. To wit, this most recent reading is the highest reading since the week of December 26, 2013, which preceded a 3.6 percent decline in the S&P 500 in January.

Need more? There has not been a full 10 percent correction in over three years - as a frame of reference, corrections usually occur about every 18 months. And while October market crashes may grab headlines (1929, 1987, 2008), September is actually the worst month for stocks.

According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, since 1950, the S&P 500 has recorded an average drop of a half of a percent in September.

Oh sure, there will be those who will say that it’s a “stockpicker’s market” or that a managed mutual fund will be better able to absorb downward shocks, but that’s rarely the case; and the pundits doling out that kind of advice usually have a financial incentive to get you to buy whatever it is they are selling.

None other than billionaire investor Warren Buffett weighed in on the managed versus passive argument in the latest Berkshire Hathaway annual report.

Writing about the instructions laid out in his will, Buffett said his advice for the cash left to his wife was that 10 per

cent should go to short-term government bonds and 90 per cent into a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund.

He also took a shot at active management, warning investors that those who urge this method and the some ones “who profit from giving advice or effecting transactions.

The resulting frictional costs can be huge and, for investors in aggregate, devoid of benefit.

So ignore the chatter, keep your costs minimal.”

The benefits of building a diversified portfolio of low cost index funds have been proven over time. Presuming that you have created an allocation according to your

risk tolerance and personal goals and that you rebalance on a quarterly or semi-annual basis, there’s no need to change a thing when the calendar says “September,” when markets are reaching new highs or when they are correcting.
