Westmont seeks community feedback

Branding workshop set for Sept. 26

One item high on the village of Westmont’s strategic plan is community branding.

During a recent administrative committee meeting, village officials directed staff to move forward on developing a community branding plan and timeline.

The village expects a final recommendation for the branding plan by spring 2017.

Amy Quattrone, who is a member of the implementation committee and overseeing the village’s branding initiative, said the first step is to secure community engagement.

“We want to make sure we get the whole community involved in this process so that we get everyone’s ideas as we move forward,” she said. “At this time, we ask everyone to take the online survey, and then attend our branding workshop meeting...”

Downers Grove first responders test railroad disaster plan during derailment, hazardous chemical exercise

More than 104,000 train cars transporting crude oil passed through DuPage County in 2015, according to the local Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

With that number expected to double by 2025, emergency personnel throughout the area are making sure they are prepared in the event of an emergency.

Last week, Downers Grove first responders joined the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and other public safety officials to prepare for a possible hazardous chemical emergency on the BNSF railway.

The exercise was held Aug. 31 along the railroad tracks near Warren and Oakwood avenues.

Officials said the drill was designed to help county and local agencies plan a response to a scenario involving the derailment of a train carrying hazardous chemicals.

“Accidents can occur for a variety of reasons and it’s imperative that first responders, local agencies and railroad operators are ready to work together,” the village stated in a news release.

The exercise included a largescale train derailment and hazardous chemical spill. A car was placed near the derailed train to simulate a collision between the vehicle and locomotive. Firefighters had to retrieve bodies from the crushed car, and paramedics worked to carry “victims,” who were

covered in fake blood and makeup, away from the scene.

DuPage OHSEM already has a hazard specific railroad disaster plan in place that can be used in the event of a railway emergency.

Once the plan validation process is completed, county officials said it will be provided to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and shared across the state.

Several nearby police and fire departments, including Lemont, Darien and Elmhurst, also participated in the drill. Many streets near the railroad tracks were closed to traffic, and non-toxic dye was added to water that was flushed from a hydrant. This colored water was used to simulate a hazardous chemical spill.

The village said it notified residents of the exercise by distributing orange door hangers with reminder notifications. The training exercise was funded by a Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grant provided by IEMA.

The community branding workshop meeting is scheduled for Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at Village Hall, 31 W. Quincy St. During the meeting, staff will review themes found in the survey data and lead a discussion on the community’s goals for branding.

The Downers Grove Village Council appointed Nicole Walus to fill the vacant seat left

by Gina Vattimo, who abruptly resigned last month.

Commissioners selected Walus during a special meeting Aug. 30, and her swearing in is scheduled to take place at the Sept. 6 village council meeting.

“I’m honored to have been

selected and eager to begin serving the community,” said Walus, who is a special education teacher and an active member of the Downers Grove Rotary Club.

Mayor Martin Tully welcomed Walus to the council, adding that she brings a depth of experience and fresh perspective to the position. And with pending policy decisions and the fiscal 2017 budget on the council’s agenda, the mayor said Walus will serve the community well.

“I am thrilled to have the village council back at full strength,” Tully said.

Walgreens adds safe medication disposal kiosks Officials: kiosks help efforts to combat opioid abuse Bugle Staff Four safe medication disposal kiosks were opened in DuPage County Walgreens stores, including a new drop box at the retailer’s Downers Grove location.

The safe disposal kiosks are part of Walgreens’ nationwide campaign to decrease drug abuse and overdose, according to a release from the drugstore chain.

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin welcomed Walgreens’ role in county efforts to combat the use of heroin and other opioid pain medications.

“We know many people who wind up addicted to heroin first became addicted to prescription pain pills,” Cronin said during an Aug. 15 event unveiling the medication disposal kiosks. “Through our own DuPage

Rx Box program, we have collected more than 70,000 pounds of unneeded or expired prescription drugs.”

A 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that an estimated 6.5 million Americans misused a prescription drug in 2014. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that a total of 47,055 people died from both prescription and illicit drug overdoses in 2014, which represents a 6.5 percent increase from 2013 and a 140 percent increase since 2000.

“We welcome Walgreens’ participation and encourage all families to regularly sort through those prescription bottles and safely dispose of unused medications,” Cronin added. “This is one easy and convenient way we can all contribute, as together we work to cut the number of overdoses in our communities.”

The safe medication disposal kiosks are located at 1000 Ogden Ave. in Downers Grove, 63 W. 87th St. in Naperville, 324 Roosevelt Road

in Glen Ellyn and 200 E. Roosevelt Road in Villa Park.

Additionally, Walgreens announced plans to make the opioid antagonist naloxone available without a prescription in Illinois, as well as pharmacies in 34 additional states and Washington, D.C. later this year. Naloxone is a drug that blocks or reverses the effects of opioid medication, and is becoming increasingly popular among first responders nationwide as a way to reverse a heroin or prescription opioid overdose.

Illinois Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Wheaton,alsothankedWalgreens, adding that DuPage County would need “all hands on deck” to fight the region’s heroin epidemic.

“These kiosks not only make it easier for residents to dispose of unused medications, especially pain medications that serve as the gateway to heroin in many instances, but also in some ways will serve as a reminder to the public of the potential danger in having unused medications in your home,” he said.

Township hosts car care safety clinic for area seniors

The Downers Grove Township Seniors and Lawmen Together Council will hold its third annual Senior Car Care Safety and CarFit Clinic Sept. 17.

This year, the association will award a special $5,000 scholarship to a Bachelor’s degree. Eligible

Get the oil changed, plan dinner party, write thank you notes – these are the items on my to-do list for today. And I mean a physical list, not just some ideas floating around in my head. Why do I need an actual list for only three things?

Having a physical list prevents me from forgetting things, reminds me of what to focus on and frees me from the stress of having to remember. A physical list is different from having it in my head – it’s like a best friend who gently reminds me what and when I should be working on things to keep me out of trouble. It puts me in control of my day, and it can do the same for you. Whether you prefer your lists in handwritten (my personal preference) or electronic form, here are some of my favorite lists that you may want to create for yourself:

MASTER TO-DO LIST—This is where I capture things I have to do that I’m not quite sure when I’ll do. For example, I want to research buying a new tree for my backyard. I could just choose a date

to do it and jot it down in my planner.

However, I’m not quite sure when I’ll do it. So rather than trusting that I’ll remember to do it at some point, I’ve added it to my master to-do list. I review this list once a week and schedule things once I know when I’ll do them.

WEEKLY TO-DO LIST—My weekly to-do list contains things I want to remember to do every week: water the houseplants, plan next week’s meals, prepare for next week’s clients, etc.

DAILY TO-DO LIST—I have two kinds of daily to-do lists; one is for today’s unique tasks – three to five things I want to get done today that I write in my planner. I also have a daily list of recurring tasks to do each day: water outdoor flowers, thaw tomorrow’s dinner, check my social media sites, etc.

Although I remember to do most of these things without looking at the list, having them written down keeps items from being forgotten (and keeps my flowers alive).

SHOPPING LISTS—I have running lists for a variety of stores that I add to whenever I think of something I need: the grocery store, general merchandise store, home improvement store and clothing store. Listing items by store simplifies shopping and help prevent me from forgetting to get something while at the store.

DISCUSS LIST—I talk by phone once a week with my son who lives out of state. Throughout the week I often think of things I want to mention to him during our call – they’re not important enough to call about right away and also aren’t worthy of the time it would take to send a text or email.

My list lets me hang up from our weekly calls not regretting that I forgot to mention something. You might have a similar list for collecting questions you want to ask the doctor on your next visit, questions for your next parent-teacher conference, etc.

Benet GirlS Golf Coach: Mike Bremner key returners: Lauren Beaudreau (4th in state last year) is a sophomore who has strong, consistent play, leadership and (can make) a run at the individual state title. Senior Isabella Abdullah (40th in state as a freshman) is coming back after a year of not playing high school golf. Bella gives us depth and another consistent top score. My hope for Bella is for her to qualify for state as an individual, if our team doesn’t make it collectively.

Senior Abby Bitto (36th in state last year) has worked hard at her game and improved significantly every year. If senior year is her best year, she could be another individual to get through the sectional, if our team doesn’t make it. key newcomers: Sophomore Caroline Wing had some great rounds for us last year, but was

inconsistent. She has the ability to be the fourth score our team needs to advance out of the regional and the sectional, to send us downstate as a team.

Senior Rachel Green is returning after an injury prevented her from playing as a junior. Rachel is another player that we will lean on for a good fourth score to win team events and advance collectively.

Goals: I’d like us to be playing our best golf in October and advance as a team to go downstate. Our regional is as tough as any regional in the state, and our sectional is a bear as well. Short of a team trip downstate, I’d like to get our top three qualifying as individuals.

I think Lauren has a legitimate chance at winning the state title.

She was tied for the lead last year with two holes to play, and I know she’d love to put herself back in that situation with a chance for a better outcome this year.

Trojans have high hopes for 2016 soccer campaign

The Downers Grove North boys soccer team lost several key players from last season’s team but still has high hopes for the 2016 campaign.

In a win over Plainfield East in its first game, coach Mike Schmitt saw some things he liked – eventually.

“This was not a real good showing what we wanted to come out and show in the first game. It was a little sloppy out of the gate,” he said. “We got better, but it shouldn’t take 70 minutes.

This is a new group of guys, we lost a lot of seniors last year, but I am looking forward to the

season, we are looking for a lot out of them.”

Schmitt said there are a few important players that need to carry the team this year, beginning with the captains.

“We are looking for some big things from our three captains Jack Drobny, Ethan Akkawi and Jack Richards as well as Alex Pacheco and Ronaldo Perez,” Schmitt said. “Some of these guys have to step up and lead this team to where we think it needs to go.”

There are a couple of underclassmen that Schmitt said looked good in their varsity debut.

It’s a great place, and we truly believe our kids are getting a wonderful, faith-based education, but the tuition is pretty expensive. We’ve already had to start digging into our savings to make this happen, and the kids are only in elementary school. Should we keep them enrolled, or should we transfer them to public school?

Maureen Dear Maureen, I understand wanting your kids to get the best education possible.

Private schools can provide some advantages academically, while a good Christian school might offer spiritual advantages. But, the bottom line is this: if you can’t cash flow it, you shouldn’t do it.

All of my kids went to public schools, and they are good, moral people and strong Christians. In the process, they learned how to interact with people of all faiths, no faith, and how to display their faith and beliefs adequately in their personal lives and in the marketplace.

The truth is, you’ll find great things and bad things in any school, private or public, Christian or not.

And no matter where your kids go to school, as parents, you still have to teach them about the world – the good and the bad, the right and the wrong. Life can’t be lived inside a protective bubble.

What’s the deal with deferred comp?

Dear Dave, I work for a fire department in Mississippi, and I’ve been trying to get information on the state’s deferred comp plan. No one here seems to know a lot about it, so I was wondering if I should keep looking for information or is it not worth the bother?

I would only do deferred compensation after I’ve done everything else in terms of saving 15 percent of my income for retirement, including a Roth IRA.
