Harvest Fest hopes to draw 3,000 attendees 2nd annual Harvest Fest to take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 30

A beer garden, live music, food, children’s activities and more will soon be at a Downers Grove park.

The second annual Harvest Fest—which is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept.

30, at Fishel Park—will welcome attendees with familiar attractions and new additions.

“We’re looking to have 3,000 [attendees] over the day if not more,” said Dawn Hartman, manger of marketing and creative development for Downers Grove Park District. This year, admission to Harvest Fest is free to the community.

A new element added to the festival is the 40th annual DG 5 & 8 Miler. In years past, the race was typically hosted in June.

“The DG 5 & 8 Miler was moved to September to create a large com-

munity event in conjunction with Harvest Fest, in addition to being a training run for those runners participating in the Chicago Marathon, [which is] also celebrating [its] 40th anniversary,” Hartman said.

Hartman said the Park District hosts a lot of events in the summer and they wanted to have a “big bang” in the fall.

At 8:30 a.m., the race begins at the Lincoln Center and ends at Fishel Park.

Hartman said the racecourse goes through residential streets and the Park District intends to provide a nice, scenic route for the runners.

Top finishers in the male and female divisions for the DG 5 & 8 Miler will receive a racer medal.

Proceeds raised through the race will go to offset costs for the Park District to host the festival.

Another new element added to Harvest Fest is the debut of the Park District’s Lyman Honey Wheat Ale crafted by Alter Brewing Company. Tastings will be available in the beer garden.

At 3 p.m., festivalgoers have the option to participate in the Chilympics. Groups will compete against one another to cook a chili recipe, while others sample their creations.

“They do have to cook the chili on site,” Hartman said. “People like to see it being made.”

Hartman said they’ve held the competition for many years, and hope to generate some more buzz.

“We’re hoping to have six to 10 competitors,” Hartman said.

“There will be a category for them to be judged. There will be a People’s Choice award. [Attendees] will be able to vote online.”

For the winners in the Chilympics, cash prizes will be available to residential groups and plaques go to municipal groups.

Taking to the stage at 10:30 a.m. to provide live entertainment is Diva, followed by performances by Hillybilly Rockstarz at 1 p.m. and DJ Coach Josh at 3 p.m. Closing out the lineup at 5 p.m. is Modern Day Romeos.

Attendees will have a plethora of food options to try throughout the festival: vendors on hand include Robinson’s Ribs, Miner Mike’s Concessions, Cupcakes for Courage, Well’s Street Popcorn and Everyday’s A Sundae.

Other activities include the craft fair, pie eating contest, and bags tournament. “We are also seeking volunteers for the race and Harvest Fest,” Hartman said.

Registration opens for preschool programs First session begins Tuesday, October 31 Registration for District 99’s preschool programs at the Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High School is now open for the 2017-18 school year The first session begins Tuesday, October 31.

North High School’s “Little North Stars” and South High School’s “Little Mustangs” run this fall and spring and offers two sessions a week for children ages 3 to 5 years old: either Tuesday and Thursday or Wednesday and Friday. Little North Stars session is held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Little Mustangs runs from 12:50 to 2:15 p.m. Each program is 21-weeks and they are planned,

taught, and maintained by high school students who are studying Child Development. The cost of each program is $325.

Downers Grove South High School also offers “Pinto’s Play Group” during the fall and spring for children 2 to 3 years old. The fall session runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:10 to 11:30 a.m.; the spring session runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:10 to 10:35 a.m. This is a 14-week program taught by high school students who are studying Early Childhood Education. The cost for the entire year is $100.

Principal named as finalist for national recognition Woodridge native helps create prosthetic hand NIU students develop prosthetic hand at 2 percent the cost of existing technology A robotic hand developed by a team of Northern Illinois University engineering students has the potential to change the lives of amputees - at about 2 percent of the cost of similar prosthetics currently on the market.

The team of three students set out in summer 2016 to develop a functional, low-cost prosthetic hand that could benefit the uninsured or people living in poverty.

“In the Third World, if you lose your hand you lose your ability to work,” team member Mackenzie Franklin of Woodridge said. “You could go from being a productive craftsman to starving to death in the space of a month.”

While there are open-source designs for hooks and body-powered hands, the students wanted to create a more sophisticated design powered by electromyography, or EMG, which uses electrical signals created by the muscles in the arm.

The hand the students developed is a fraction of the weight of similar hands on the market.

It can perform a gripping motion by pinching the index and middle finger against the thumb. The grip force is enough to pick up and hold light objects, like a cup or a hand tool.

Team member Nathan Freitag of Batavia said the project gave the team members a taste of the trial and error process inherent in engineering design.

“You’d get something working

and something else would break.

There was a lot of debugging,” he said. “[Still], the idea that we could save people tens of thousands of dollars and make life easier for patients was very interesting to me.”

While the prosthetic is still in development, the team estimates it could be produced at a cost of around $300 to $500 - a far cry from the $20,000 they said they found existing EMG hands selling for.

The team presented a prototype of the prosthesis for its senior design project, a capstone project all undergraduates in the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology complete as a graduation requirement. The hand, which the team dubbed A.D.A.P.T., won first place in the electrical engineering division of the senior design contest, though it lost the overall prize to a Mars rover from the mechanical engineering division.

Though all three teammates graduated from NIU in spring 2017, they said they plan to continue working together to refine the A.D.A.P.T., which has become a labor of love.

“We already know a lot of ways we can improve upon it,” teammate Lukas Bonnen of Byron said.

“We’re trying to remain patient-oriented. It’s got some road to travel, but it’s on its way.”

For Franklin, the most satisfying moment of the project’s development was when their test subject, a man who had lost his hand, tried it for the first time. The team is using feedback from patient trials to further improve the next prototype.

“Going to the patient was a big deal for me,” she said. “Proof of concept on ourselves was one thing; proof of concept on an amputee was another thing entirely.”

Westmont High School principal named as finalist for National Principal of Year Westmont High School Principal Jack Baldermann has been selected as one of three finalists for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)’s 2018 National Principal of the Year award. Baldermann is the first high school principal from Illinois to be named as a finalist for this national honor.

After interviews in September in Washington, D.C., the National High School Principal of the Year will be announced in October. If Baldermann is chosen, he will be the first principal selected from Illinois in the 25-year history of the award.

The National Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high

school principals, who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.

“Every student is sacred,” Baldermann said. “Our work is not to be easy. Our work is too challenging and too important to work in isolation, and our collective determination, effort and talents can overcome any challenge. We do not meet students halfway; we meet them wherever they are and find a way to support them to succeed. Saying this means something, but living it and get-

ting everyone to follow through together on making this happen is what I am most proud of as a principal.”

Baldermann and his team focus on working collaboratively to build ambitious, studentcentered programs based on the school’s S.M.A.R.T. goals and vision of helping teens turn choices into opportunities. Because of those efforts, several authors and researchers have cited Westmont as one of the most improved schools in Illinois and in the nation. Westmont has had only four students drop out in the last five years, a 100-percent graduation rate for African-American and Latino students four years in a row and one of the most improved Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level programs in the country.

Along with serving as a leader in education for nearly 30 years, Baldermann also has made more than 300 presentations in 43 states and Canada.

Don’t let your car drive you to be crazy It’s time to clean out and organize your car Is your car like a time capsule, revealing the history of past meals, meetings, and shopping excursions?

Is air conditioning your only cooling option because rolling down the windows would cause a tornado of flying papers? If so, it’s time to clean out and organize your car.

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER Using a couple of boxes and a trash bag, pull everything out of your car.

Use one box for things that will go back into your car, the other for things that belong elsewhere, and the trash bag for everything else.

USE CONTAINERS AS APPROPRIATE When putting things back in your car, you can use visor and back-of-theseat organizers for sunglasses, CD’s, pens, etc., and a mesh laundry bag over the back seat for a variety of other items. Keep store gift certificates and coupons in an envelope in your door pocket or glove compartment so you’ll have them with you when you need them and won’t be sorry they’re at home on the refrigerator. Store items

you don’t need as frequently in a milk crate or a box in your trunk. Keep valuables out of view so curious eyes can’t see them and be tempted to break into your car. And be sure to have a designated container (other than the seat or floor) to stash trash.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Keep an umbrella under the passenger seat, and a flashlight and extra batteries in the door pocket or glove compartment. Consider keeping an emergency supply of water and snacks in your car proper so you can access them in case you’re stranded in an accident and can’t get to the trunk. Besides tire-changing supplies (including safety flares), your trunk can house jumper cables, a snow brush and shovel & extra cold-weather clothes (I keep these in the trunk year-round so I don’t have to remember to load them in November), a blanket, first aid kit, sunscreen, and bug spray.

MAKE IT EASY TO GET ITEMS TO AND FROM YOUR CAR I keep a collapsible mesh bag with handles in my car for depositing items that need to go into the house. When I arrive home, it’s easy to grab the bag and carry it around the house as I put things away. I also put things to go into my car in this bag (library books to be returned, dry cleaning, etc.) to easily transport these items out to the car.

You can also use a cardboard box, collapsible plastic crate, or laundry basket.

REMOVE UNNECESSARY STUFF EACH TIME YOU ARRIVE HOME This includes trash, store purchases, sporting equipment (unless you’ve made a conscious decision to store it in your car), receipts, etc. If you do this regularly, things won’t pile up and get lost in a messy car jungle.

Not only will cleaning out and organizing your car reduce distractions and make you feel good, it will prevent those embarrassing moments when you can’t give someone a ride because there’s no room in your ride.

A 32-6 season and a regional title, while great for most programs, was not what Benet Academt was looking for last season, as it lost to Marist in the sectional semifinal.

The Redwings are a program that each season comes out planning tyo compete for a state title and this season is no different.

“The girls are excited about this year. They are driven to be successful and motivated to have a good season,” said Benet coach Brad Baker, who is entering his 10th year at the helm.

Benet returns several players with varsity experience from last season’s team .

Back are, 6, foot, 1-inch outside hitter Lilly Johnson, a Bradley University recruit, who Baker said was the best offensive outside hitter for the aredwings last year.

Also returing are Claire Byrne, (5-10, outside hitter), Anna Paoni

Fantasy football column to run all season Who to sit and who to start predictions online each Wednesday As the NFL opens uop another year, that means only one thing to all the sports nerds like me out – fantasy football!

I have been playing fantasy for the nearly 25 years and put a lot of time and effort into the strategy that makes up the game. With this time comes wins – of the three leagues I am in, I am currently a back-to-back champion in two of them. The one I have only been a part of for two years (yeah, they want to kick me out already) and the other am part of a two-man team that has won four titles in six years.

Cousins is playing on a franchise tag this season, so he is on a proveit-and-get-paid, one year deal - All the motivation for him to come out on fire against the Eagles.

I am a fan and I had him high on my board of mid-round QBs when I was drafting, but after preseason game No. against the Bears, I lowered him a few spots.

I still think Mariota will be better than OK this year with Delanie Walker and Rishard Matthews back and the additions of Eric Decker and rookie Corey Davis – but he did struggle against a Bears pass rush front that is nothing like what he will see from Kahlil Mack and the Raiders.

RUNNING BACK START - JACQUIZZ RODGERS BUCCANEERS If you drafted him – play him.

My hope is that you took him after round 10 and that he is a Flex option for you and not a pure RB1, but if you have Ezekiel Elliott or a rookie runner that you just want to see one regular season game with before riding him, then Rodgers is your guy.

Doug Martin is suspended for the first three games of the season and even if he gets his job back fully when he returns, you have three solid weeks of a talented runner who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

There are conflicting reports all over the place if Martin will even

WIDE RECIEVER START - MARTAVIUS BRYANTSTEELERS Bryant returns to the Steelers and the NFL after being suspended for a season and right away gets a Cleveland Browns team that just cut a Pro Bowl corner back in Joe Haden.

Not to be lost here is that Haden signed in Pittsburgh and I am sure is sharing coverage secrets with his new squad. In only 21 career games, Bryant has 14 TDs. He is a big WR at 6-foot-4 and should get single coverage all the time as long as Antonio Brown stays healthy.

Big Ben is still a solid NFL QB and adding another arrow to his quiver is only going to help that offense.

SIT - CHRIS HOGAN - PATRIOTS I know – Tom Brady is throwing the ball and the Kansas City defense isn’t exactly the ’85 Bears, but slow the roll just a bit.

Yes, Julian Edelman is hurt and someone has to take his place.

Hogan seems like the guy – but

is he? Will it be Danny Amendola?

Will the Pats go downfield this year and use the speed of Brandin Cooks? Or will they just feature the plethora of pass-catching running backs for the short-yardage throws? Oh, and let’s not forget Gronk is back in the mix.

TIGHT END START- MARTELLUS BENNETT -PACKERS The former Bear and most recently Patriot TE has landed in a good spot in Green Bay. The Packers has a running game that consists of a converted wide receiver starting in the backfield.

What does that ultimately mean? The Packers will again be a pass heavy team.

Jordy Nelson will get his catches and rack up his numbers as he always does – but Aaron Rodgers needs to be able to spread the ball around and his new TE is just the guy to help and could be a guy that nears averaging a TD a week.

SIT - JACK DOYLE - COLTS I am fan of Doyle and think he will have a productive season when all is said and done – but let’s not forget it looks like he has Scott Tolzien throwing him the ball right now.

Doyle had only five grabs for 25 yards and no TDs in the preseason, so it’s not like he and Tolzien have found some magic that makes him a must play. Even if by some miracle Luck is back for the opener, you are going to have a quarterback that has yet to practice, let alone play in a game.

Wait until Luck is back and healthy or until Tolzien proves Doyle is a prime target for him.

County offering LIHEAP Assistance Beginning Nov. 1, applications will be taken for seniors, disabled, disconnected and households with children 5 and under DuPage County Community Services will be accepting applications for the annual Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) beginning Oct. 2, until May 31, 2018, or until funds are depleted. As cold temperatures are just around the corner, eligible families are encouraged to take advantage of the program.

Beginning Oct. 2, DuPage County Department of Community Services will accept winter heating applications, by appointment only, from seniors (60+) or people with disabilities.

Beginning Nov. 1, applications will be taken for seniors, disabled, disconnected and house-

holds with children 5 and under.

All other eligible households may begin applying on Dec. 1. Benefits are paid directly to the utilities on behalf of eligible households.

If your household’s combined gross income for the 30 days beginning with the date of the application is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, you may be eligible to receive assistance. A single-person household can qualify for the program with a monthly gross income of up to $1,508; a two-person household up to $2,030; and a family of four can earn up to $3,075.

The State of Illinois will be offering the PIPP Program (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) for the current program year. PIPP will be offered Oct. 2 through Dec. 31, or until funds are exhausted.

Customers must bring the following required documentation when applying for assistance: Social Security Cards for all household members; Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30 days prior to the date of application beginning with the date of application; Current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if they pay for the energy directly); and For more information, DuPage County residents may call (630) 407-6500, (800) 942-9412 (tollfree) or visit www.dupageco.org.
