Early morning fire does $170,000 in house damage Fire fighting units from several agencies responded to an early morning fire in unincorporated Downers Grove on Monday, Sept.

25. The Darien-Woodridge Fire District was dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire on the 6000 block of Woodward Avenue at 3:02 a.m.

As part of a multi-agency Automatic Aid pact, the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District and Downers Grove Fire Department responded on the initial alarm as well. The first units were on the scene in less than four minutes from the time of dispatch.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire in the front of the singlestory, single family home and were advised that all the occupants were out of the house. Coordinated fire attack, ventilation and search operations were conducted, and the bulk of the fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.

Due to the extensive amount of salvage and overhaul to be com-

pleted, Command upgraded the alarm to a “Special” bringing two additional fire companies and an extra ambulance. Damages are estimated to be in excess of $170,000 to the structure alone and the cause remains under investigation.

The occupants, who were renting the house, reported being awoken by the sound of breaking glass and it does not appear that there were working smoke detectors in the residence. In addition, the occupants did not have renters insurance.

With Fire Prevention Week just around the corner, the Darien-Woodridge Fire District would like to take the time to remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. In addition, if you’re considering renting, it’s well worth the $15 - $30 per month to obtain renters insurance.

In addition to Lisle-Woodridge Fire District and Downers Grove Fire Department, DarienWoodridge also received assistance from Tri-State Fire District and Westmont Fire Department while Lemont Fire District and LaGrange Park Fire Department provided coverage for the rest of Darien-Woodridge’s jurisdiction.

Development plans for Flavorchem OK’d Officials advance plans for 220K sq.ft. development’s campus expansion

The Downers Grove Village Council reviewed a request presented by representatives for Flavorchem Corporation for campus expansion.

In a unanimous vote, officials decided to advance plans for the 220,000 square-foot development’s campus expansion for creating and manufacturing flavor and color solutions for food, beverage and nutraceutical industries.

The matter was previously discussed at the council’s Sept. 5 meeting.

Mayor Martin Tully stressed that such a request is not unprecedented for a Village Board to consider as a means of helping a businesses to thrive.

Tax incentives, for example, serves as one of several ways the Village can work with area businesses to promote economic development.

A number of community members spoke out in concern for the project.

Kevin Halpin, of Elite Electronic Engineering, approached the council to present his findings from circling a petition and said he collected 47 signatures from businesses or general managers opposing the measure to license to Flavorchem Corporation for rights to Brook Drive.

Of that amount, it includes 32 separate businesses that oppose the closing of Brook Drive. That makes for roughly 320 employees collectively.

notification that these resolutions were under consideration,” Halpin said. “… his was the first time they had heard that this was happening. I think their reactions to the closure of this street and the impact on their businesses was telling. Most people had a very surprised reaction.”

He added that one individual reacted dismissively questioning the direction of the Village Council.

find any individual in favor of the measure as presented to the council and said two people were indifferent.

The Downers Grove business he represents has been located at 1516 Centre Dr. since 1975 and employs 75 people.

The Village’s Plan Commission voted against the proposal and opposed the waiver of the $388,000 vacation fee, which was then going to be requesting a vacation of the street in question.

Mayor Martin Tully said ultimately, the waiving of fees is traditionally a Village Council issue.

The Village receives requests of this type often.

Tully said there were other issues raised by the Plan Commission, but the waiver of the vacation fee served as the big issue.

Commissioner Bob Barnett referenced a traffic study that showed nobody losing access to Finley or Butterfield roads under this scenario and said the only indication

At 10:19 a.m. on October 19 millions of people across the United States and around the globe will take a few minutes to practice three simple actions that could save their lives during a major earthquake.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and municipal and county emergency management agencies are encouraging Illinois residents to drop, cover, and hold on during The Great ShakeOut earthquake drill.

“Earthquakes occur without warning, so it’s important to know what to do as soon as you feel the earth shake,” said IEMA Director James K. Joseph.

“With two seismic zones in southern Illinois and residents who travel throughout the world, it’s important that everyone knows how to stay safe during an earthquake. The drill takes only a few minutes, but the lessons learned could save your life.”

The Great ShakeOut drill centers around the drop, cover, and hold on

actions: drop down to the ground, take cover under a table or other piece of heavy furniture, and then hold on until the shaking stops.

In October 2016, nearly 500,000 Illinoisans took part in the ShakeOut drill.

To date, more than 300,000 people in Illinois are registered for this year’s event.

Some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the United States happened in the winter of 181112 in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which reaches into southwestern Illinois. That series of earthquakes lasted for several months and shaking was felt as far away as the East Coast. A similar earthquake today could cause catastrophic damage in a region that is

much more developed and populated than in the early 1800s.

Schools, businesses, government agencies, families, and others can register to participate in the drill at www. shakeout.org/centralus.

Registered participants will receive additional information about the drill and earthquake preparedness.

While the international drill will take place on October 19 individual drills can be conducted anytime within two weeks of that date.

Benet falls in three sets to Wheaton North just days after beating the Falcons in tourney play

Last weekend, Benet Academy dropped its first match of the season, falling to Marist in three sets in the championship match of the Wheaton Classic at Wheaton Warrenville South.

During that march to the finale, the Redwings made short work of the other two teams in its path, including a 25-9, 25-19 win over Wheaton North.

Just five days later, Benet hosted the Falcons and took over right where it left off with a convincing 25-11 win.

But that was where it stopped.

Wheaton North won the next two sets 25-17 to hand Benet its second loss of the season.

“We talk about how do you play someone the second time around and we came out extremely focused in the first game – what we saw over the weekend,” said Benet coach Brad

Baker. “Then, you get in the second and we assume it’s going to be easy again. They have some really good players and that second game is more of who they are than the first three we saw and when you wake a team up and give them some confidence.”

After returning from the tournament, Baker said the Redwings were looking to build on the performance, but that was not the case in practice or in a 25-21, 25-19 win over East Suburban Catholic Conference rival Nazareth Academy on Sept. 21.

“Over the weekend and that wasn’t our A game, we still wanted to build off that and then to come back to this, it wasn’t stepping stone forward, but we hope to have some of those soon,” Baker said. “We were out of sync for three days and it wasn’t the team we have seen all year. That doesn’t mean it is going to be

Pair of Eagles earn NACC weekly awards For the second consecutive week the Benedictine University

football team had a pair of players earn recognition from the

Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference as Grant Klaver and

Austin Nirva received weekly awards.

Klaver was named as the Special Team Student-Athlete of the Week, punting four times for an average of 43.2 yards per attempt during Benedictine’s 4540 loss to Alma College.

Klaver accumulated 173 yards with a long of 48, pinning one inside the 20-yardline.

The sophomore has averaged over 40 yards per punt in each of the past two games and sits third in the conference with five inside the 20.

Nirva earned recognition as the Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week.

The Cary, Ill. native led the Benedictine defense with 12 tackles, including five solo.

The 12 stops were among the best in the conference during the MIAA-NACC Challenge.

Nirva leads Benedictine with 24 tackles on the year, good for sixth in the conference.

NORTH CENTRAL On its previous trip to Millikin University in 2015, the North Central College football team needed a 35-point fourth quarter to post a victory over the Big Blue. This time around, the Cardinals put together a 34-point outburst in the second period to set all drama aside, going on to post a 51-21 triumph at Frank M. Lindsay Field.

North Central (3-0, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) gained a season-high 523 yards of total offense, scored its first defensive touchdown of the season and once again got a series of impactful special-teams plays as it secured a 13th straight victory over the Big Blue.

The Cardinals opened the scoring on their second offensive drive, using a 36-yard pass completion from Broc Rutter to Jake Beesley to cover the bulk of the 61-yard drive. Dominick Muoghalu crossed the goal line from a yard away with 8:30 still to play in the first period. After stopping a pair of Millikin possessions on fourth down, North Central scored in similar fashion.

Rutter completed a 17-yard pass to Joshua Ruiz, again putting the Cardinals on the doorstep before Muoghalu scored on

another one-yard run with 13:31 on the second-quarter clock.

Midway through the second period, the Cardinals forced a punt deep in Millikin territory.

Andrew Kamienski fielded the kick at his own 36-yard line, then ran his first punt-return attempt of the campaign 60 yards to the Big Blue four-yard line.

Muoghalu answered the call again, scoring his third rushing TD of the afternoon and fifth of the season on the next play, leaving the visitors with a 21-0 edge with 6:58 left in the first half. Cardinal safety Pat Cravens ended Millikin’s next drive with an interception at the Big Blue 43, and Rutter hit Kamienski for a diving 29-yard grab before calling his own number for a fouryard touchdown run.

Again buried deep in its own territory following a penalty on the ensuing kickoff, Millikin saw its next drive ended with an interception as well, only this time it was at the hands of defensive end Josh Leonhard, who snatched the ball out of the air at the two-yard line and drove over the goal line with 2:18 left in the half.

The Big Blue did bounce back on its next drive to score its lone touchdown of the half on Nicco Stepina’s four-yard scoring pass to Colton Kelsey, which came after Stepina jumpstarted the offense with a 42-yard completion to Jordan Smith.

The Cardinals took possession with 1:04 on the clock, which turned out to be just enough time to put another score on the board.

Rutter connected with Austin Breunig out of the backfield for completions of 35 and 20 yards before finding Ruiz for a 13yard score, Ruiz’s first collegiate touchdown, with just 14 seconds before halftime.

Millikin (2-1, 0-1 CCIW ) scored on its first two possessions of the second half, as Stepina threw touchdowns of seven and 20 yards to Gerald Perry, while the Cardinals added a 27-yard Liam Crotty field goal in between.

Cardinals split pair of matches at own invite Splitting a pair of matches at their home triangular, the North Central College women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe Illinois Wesleyan University in the opener, before rebounding with a 6-3 win over non-conference opponent Monmouth College in the nightcap.

In the opener against Illinois Wesleyan (2-3, 2-2 CCIW), the Titans won all three doubles position in convincing fashion before sweeping singles play. Diana Barcelata suffered her first loss of the season at No. 1 singles, despite winning the first set 7-5, Barcelata was unable to hang on against Lauren Neitzel, eventually falling 7-5, 10-6.

North Central (3-4) bounced back nicely in the nightcap however, jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Cardinal combination of Barcelata and Morgan House took down Katherine Hinman and Emma Johanns, 8-6 at the No. 1 position, while Tiffany Smolik and Reagan Scherpe clawed out a hard fought 9-7 win over Morgan

Holle and Natalie Curtis at No. 2.

In singles play, Scherpe increased the Cardinal lead 3-1 after a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Lexi Tibbs at the No. 5 position, before the Fighting Scots drew back to within one with a win at the No. 2 spot.

• With two weeks left before the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships, the North Central College women’s golf team showed it is rounding into solid competitive form Saturday and Sunday, posting the best 18- and 36-hole rounds of the fall season in the Dan Quayle

The Cardinals matched a season best with a score of 334 in Saturday’s first round, then outdid themselves by 10 strokes on Sunday to finish with a 36-hole score of 658, 20 strokes ahead of their previous season low. North Central placed sixth in a nine-team field, as Washington University in St. Louis posted a score of 616 to finish one stroke ahead of runner-up Wittenberg University.

Rainstar Roque achieved the Cardinals’ highest finish, shooting 161 to place 20th overall, while Maggie Russell and Gillian Young tied for 27th (164) and Alex Brummer finished 35th (170). Brummer’s second-round score of 78 was the Cardinals’ best individual 18-hole score of the weekend.

North Central’s final tune-up for the CCIW Championships will be on Monday at the Aurora University Fall Invitational, played at Blackberry Oaks Golf Club in Bristol.

• The North Central College men’s soccer team struggled to connect in its’ 1-0 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville this

evening. With the weather playing a role in pushing the game back from its original time of 1 PM, both teams seemed to be affected by the incredibly hot second day of fall.

With the Cardinals starting the half with the ball, there was a definite sense of urgency in getting ahead early in the game. By the 11-minute mark, North Central had made two impressive attempts at goal and successfully hindered any advancements towards its own goal.

Despite the constant ball movement between both teams, the Pioneers were regularly in possession of the ball and won many of the settles following a clear. By out-shooting the Cardinals 9-3, University of Wisconsin-Platteville kept North Central on its’ toes, yet the game itself was much more exciting than the score depicts.

Multiple times the Cardinals’ creativity by the offensive line led to incredibly opportunistic crosses. Unfortunately, miscommunication played a factor in many of the missed goal attempts.

With over half of the first period completed most of the game

seemed to be played at midfield, with each team planning its next attack. However, at the 36th-minute, the Pioneers saw a chance to forge through North Central’s defensive line and in successfully discovering a path to the goal, University of Wisconsin-Platteville scored giving them a 1-0 lead.

Entering the second half down, was not something the Cardinals’ were worried about and having such an incentive to even out the score North Central came out the gates ready to play.

Junior Gavin Sanchez played a particularly energetic game both in the first and second half. With four shots recorded for the game, three of which were headers that were just too close for comfort for the Pioneers. Though Sanchez’s attempts did not find the back of the net, the versatility and potential danger of the Cardinals’ forwards was once again showcased.

As the game continued late into the second half, the Cardinals took over the game, finessing passes through the Platteville’s defense and once again setting themselves up to tie the game.

If I woke up in your shoes, I’d probably help them fix the roof first. The only way I would do that, though, is if they agree to let you help them address the reasons they don’t have any money. If you have the cash, go ahead and pay for the roof. But let them know they must pay you back by getting some financial counseling.

I know you love your mom and dad, and they work too hard to be broke. We’re not talking about you shaming or condemning them in any way. Talk to them in a loving, caring way, but you have to address the situation. If they’ve worked all their lives and can’t come up with $3,000, something’s wrong. The fact they don’t have any money is the symptom.

The problem is they’ve mishandled the dollars they earned.

Even if you don’t make a lot, you can have cash set aside for emergencies if you manage it well.

You’re a young guy making good money, so there’s no reason you can’t do both things quickly.

Families flock for Indian Summer Festival Annual Indian Summer Festival held Sept. 24 at Castaldo Park

This past weekend marked the first days of autumn, and with it, came a plethora of fall family fun put on by Woodridge Park District.

Crowds flocked to the annual Indian Summer Festival held Sept. 24 at Castaldo Park.

The event is meant to serve as a kick-off celebration for Woodridge Park District fall programming.

“We’re very proud of the event,” said Amanda Nichols, who organized the festival. “Most events nowadays aren’t free to the community, and [Indian Summer Festival] is a completely free event where people can come out.”

Festival-goers trekked the grounds at Castaldo Park to find hayrides, trackless train rides and a pumpkin moon jump.

“It’s getting into fall and the scarecrow season and Halloween,” Nichols said.

Typically, Indian Summer Festival draws in between 1,200 and 1,500 people.

Attendee Rosa Jovanovikj, of Woodridge, stood in line waiting with her children as they prepared to take a ride on the ponies.

“The whole [event’s ability to bring in families to] gather around with neighbors and all the kids activities is just great,” she said.

Jovanovikj said she and her children enjoyed coming out to the festival so much last year, they returned.

“It’s perfect,” she said. “My kids love the inflatables.”

The event’s popularity rings

true for many, Nichols said.

“I think [the festival is huge for families] probably because it is an early fall event, so we’re not waiting until October [when] it’s really cold,” Nichols said. “It’s celebrating the warmer [part of the season] toward the end of summer [and the] beginning of fall. I think the fact that it is a free event is enticing people to come out, too.”

Nichols said the reason for the event’s success boils down to one key factor.

“I think it’s word of mouth,” Nichols said. “It’s just a really nice day out. It’s only five hours long, so it’s easy for families to come out, spend a few hours, get back still in time for dinner and school the next day. I think based on word of mouth, people have just enjoyed the event and they keep telling their friends about it.”

Elsewhere at the park, festivalgoers tried their hand at guessing games, giant yard games and slide races.

Valerie Gonzalez, also of Woodridge, said she is glad she and her children decided to drop in for Indian Summer Festival.

“There’s so many people,” she said. “The kids, they get to get out and have a good time before the weather gets cold.”

This year was Gonzalez’s first time attending Indian Summer Festival.

Gonzalez and her family stood in line for face painting. Two of her children wore designs, with one donning swirls and curls and another with a Minecraftinspired look.

“There’s a lot of variety [and] a lot of different things,” she said. “The kids are having a great time.”
