This summer, teams of teachers, staff, parents and administrators collaboratively created action steps for the District’s three strategic goals.

Last Monday evening, the District 58 Board of Education approved the resulting District 58 Strategic Plan Action Steps.

These steps will guide District 58 as they pursue excellence in education through our Strategic Plan, and they need your help.

The action steps direct the District to form working groups to accomplish different facets of our Strategic Plan. It is our hope that each working group will include balanced representation from our schools and stakeholders. The working groups are the: • Curriculum Council (comprises mostly teachers and staff, with very limited parent spots) • Professional Learning Council (comprises teachers and staff) • Superintendent’s Community Advisory Council (comprises parents and community members) • Superintendent’s Staff Communications Council (comprises teachers and staff) • Resources Review Council (comprises teachers and staff, with limited parent spots) • Communications Feedback Council (comprises staff, parents and community members) • Facilities Planning

Council (comprises staff, parents and community members) These working groups provide an engaging yet informal opportunity for teachers, staff parents and community members to provide input and feedback critical to our Strategic Plan’s success. They invite District 58 stakeholders to please consider joining one of these groups.

Lincoln turns tide in debates against Douglas in Galesburg

BY OWEN W. MUELDER FOR THE REGISTER-MAIL OF GALESBURG The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858. Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union. Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men. Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians agree Douglas put Lincoln on the de-

fensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the defensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories. If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois, slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators than any of the other six contests.

Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and selfassured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight”and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. An energetic Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence applied to all men, not just some, and the slavery question was between right and wrong.

In November, the state Legislature re-elected Douglas by 54 to 46, but the debates catapulted Lincoln’s name and reputation across the nation; the Republican Party nominated him for the presidency two years later. His election victory proved to be a significant watershed in American history.

Only a half a minute remained in the Mustangs’ 2018 Homecoming battle,with Addison Trail. The Blazers led 26-22.

The Mustangs had the ball at the AT 10-yard line.

Mustang quarterback George Ross (183 yards, 2 TDs) dropped back to pass and found WR Kyle Heavey (four catches, 35 yards,TD), for the 10-yard, game-winning, scoring strike, with 28 seconds remaining.

After Robbie Khalil’s PAT, the Mustangs led 29-26.

The Mustang defense held off AT’s last ditch effort and made the 2018 DGS homecoming a rousing success — although a little tough on the hearts of the elder Mustang faithful.

With the win, the Mustangs, improve to 2-1 in the West Suburban Gold.

North Central golfers head to CCIW meet The North Central College women’s golf team closes out their fall season at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships in Joliet.

They look to improve from their fifth place finish a season ago.

Last season, the Cardinals shot a total score of 678 over the tworounds of golf played at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago.

Illinois Wesleyan won the tournament last year with a score of 633 over the two days.

In the second quarter, Lion quarterback Jay McGrath, scored from one yard out, to give the Lions a 7-3 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Demo King, extended the Lion lead to 13-3, on his two-yard run. McGrath’s second PAT, concluded the scoring, in the 14-3 Lion victory Demetrius Kelley, led the Lion ground attack with 98 yards on 11 carries. Dylan Laue added 57 yards while Mike Walker, chipped in with 46 rushing yards.

McGrath, completed one pass on the night, that to his favorite receiver, Jakub Kowal for four yards.

Lisle’s 5-foot-11, 255 pound DT Kevin Paz led the Lions with 10 tackles. Walker added nine and Charlie Waldusky had six tackles, with a sack and two tackles for losses included. The always-steady Nick Martich added seven tackles, one tackle for a loss included.

“Man, it takes forever to get to Herscher,” Lisle head coach Paul Parpet said, “A big win for us. Herscher is very good and our defense was outstanding in holding them to just a field goal.

This season is different than last because they have all played together for at least one season and have played together before.

“Their preparation is better, and they know the golf courses better,” head coach Steve Sellers said. Maggie Russell, Laura Ringo and Brianna Ergastolo all got the chance to play at Joliet Country Club in the CCIW Preview on September 18, which is at the same course that this year’s CCIW Championships will be played at.

Four of the five golfers competing in this year’s CCIW Cham-

pionship, played in the tournament last year.

Those being Rainstar Roque, Maggie Russell, Alex Brummer, and Brianna Ergastolo. Lone senior Laura Ringo will be the other golfer competing for the Cardinals.

Ringo has embraced that leadership role as the only senior on the team. “She is so upbeat, and is the super mentor of the team,” Sellers said. “She totally transformed her swing in the offseason, which not many people do, but it was for the better.”

The Cardinals best golfer this

season has been Maggie Russell, who averages an 83.56 per 18-holes this season.

She also has the team best score of 81, which happened at her most recent meet, the Dechert Classic on Sep. 23rd.

Following Russell is Alex Brummer (89.38 average this season), Laura Ringo (90.78 average this season) and Brianna Ergastolo (95.89 average this season).

In a recent poll done by the CCIW women’s golf coaches to predict how each team would finish at the tournament.

The Cardinals came in fifth

place with 23 votes.

Leading the poll was Carthage and Illinois Wesleyan with 46 points, and four first-place votes each.

Behind them was Augustana (37 points), Wheaton (24 points), Millikin (23 points), Elmhurst (13 points), and Carroll (12 points).

The CCIW Championships start on Thursday, Sep. 27 and run through Saturday, Sep. 29th and is hosted by Augustana College.

The tournament will start at 8 a.m. on all three days at Joliet Country Club.

A Lion victory over the Comets, will give the Lions an undefeated, Interstate 8 Conference Small Division Championship.

It will be the first, Lisle Lions’ football conference championship, of any kind, since 1981.

In the first three and a half minutes, of the third quarter, Cox would hook up with Bleker for a 52-yard touchdown pass and then score his third touchdown of the game, from oneyard out with 8:30 left in the third quarter — Glenbard West 35 Downers Grove North 0.

Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlett, with his secondteam in the game, may have provided the Trojans, with the spark they would need to finish off the game on a high note.

With 6:21 left in the third quarter, the Hilltoppers faced a fourth and goal, at the Trojan sixyard line. Needing a touchdown, to initiate the 40-point running-clock rule, the Hilltoppers passed up the chip-shot field goal, which would have made the game 38-0, and the went for the touchdown.

Not wanting the runningclock, the entire Trojan defense rose up and smothered Hilltopper running back, Cameron Bedford, for no gain. Trojan ball.

Stymied all-day by the Glenbard West defense, “The Hitters”, Trojan junior quarterback, Drew Cassens, drove the Trojans down the field.

With 10:30 left in the game, Cassens fired a perfect 34-yard

scoring strike to Trojan wide receiver Henry Gates for the initial Trojan score.

“Drew threw me a perfect pass,” Gates said. “I beat my man and was fortunate to make the catch. The sad part for me was I hurt myself on the play and couldn’t get back in the game. We played hard today but Glenbard West is a good team and we just couldn’t make the plays. It is homecoming next week and we will work hard this week, with hopes of beating Oak Park, then.”

Even though they were playing against the Hilltopper reserves, Cassens, began to pick apart the Hilltopper secondary.

With 5:59 left in the game, Cassens would score from 13-yards out on a quarterback keeper.

Cassens would complete 14 of his 19 passes on the day for 119 yards and the touchdown pass.

Cassens, who entered the game, third in the area with 511 rushing yards, settled for 76 yards rushing on the day, with his sixth touchdown of the season.

“Glenbard West is known for its physical football,” Cassens said. “I was disappointed that we couldn’t score in the first half. I was proud of the way we played so much better in the second half. We are really fired up for homecoming week this week with Oak Park.”

Trojan leading receiver, Jack Degiorgio, grabbed three passes for 20 yards in the first half. John Worthman rushed for 47 yards and played well for the Trojan defense as well.

“I thought our drive in the first quarter was good,” said Downers Grove North coach Joe Horeni. “We played well in the first quarter. Glenbard West is a very good football team. They have some very good players and hurt us in the second quarter. Drew (Cassens) wasn’t able to run the ball as well as he has in the past.

Then again that is a credit to Glenbard West. Drew did throw the ball well for us today.”

DOWNERS NORTH On a beautiful first Saturday of fall, at beautiful Duchon Field, the Trojans of Downers Grove North were the Homecoming 2018 guests, of the Hilltoppers of Glenbard West (4-1, 2-0). After battling the Hilltoppers (AP Class 8A No. 7), to a scoreless tie after one quarter, the second quarter proved too be the downfall, for Downers Grove North (2-3, 1-2).

On the first play of the second quarter, Hilltopper quarterback Tommy Bleker raced 33-yards, for the first touchdown of the game. Four minutes later, Glenbard West fullback Nick Seifert, crashed into the end zone from six-yards out for a 14-0 Hilltopper lead with seven and a half minutes remaining in the half.

— PEGGY DEAR PEGGY: I’m OK with this under two conditions. One is that you cut up the credit cards, close the accounts and never use those things again.

The second is that you don’t wipe out your savings in the process. Leave something in there, so you’re covered in the event of an emergency. Then, rebuild your savings as fast as possible once the debt is out of your way.

DEAR DAVE: I’m 35, single and I have no dependents. Do I need a life insurance policy?

— LARRY DEAR LARRY: In your situation, if you have enough cash saved up to pay your final expenses — and you don’t have any debt — there’s no reason for you to carry a life insurance policy. No one will be harmed financially by your death, and no one would be deprived of the income that would be lost if something unexpected happened to you.
