9/11 remembered in Woodridge September 11 it was a privilege to attend a 9/11 commemoration service held by the Woodridge Police and the Lisle-Woodridge Fire departments. We must never forget those who lost their lives during the vicious terrorist attack on September 11, 2011, and it was an honor to stand with local members of law enforcement and first responders as we remember the victims of 9/11, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty after the attack.

Amazon urged to pick Illinois for new headquarters The Seattle-based retailing giant Amazon has announced that it is running out of headquarters space in its current city and would like to open a second headquarters in a centralized U.S. location.

The second headquarters could contain as many as 50,000 workers, who would occupy a potential 8 million square feet of office space to be constructed for as much as $5 billion. Amazon has cited good transportation, strong schools, and a tech-oriented workforce as elements in their decision.

Turkey’s choice: Past or future Controversial election last April resulted in just over 51 percent of voters approving constitutional reforms

It is a metaphor for the choices Turks are being forced to make under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: forward to a better future and a recapture of their secular state, or back to a nostalgic past when Islam was the official religion of the Ottoman

Recent waves of terrorist attacks throughout the country have raised security levels. My car was stopped and given a cursory search before being allowed to proceed to the hotel entrance where I was then required to pass through a metal detector and have my hand luggage scanned before approaching the registration desk.

Erdogan seems bent on imposing his brand of radical Islam on what has for decades been a nation ruled by secular leaders. It was the late president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who helped establish the Republic of Turkey, modeled on Western governments and their belief in church-state separation.

Erdogan, it appears, hears more than the Muslim call to prayer. It’s as though he hears a “call” to tear down the wall separating mosque and state and, writes the Christian Science Monitor, restore Turkey to “its historical Ottoman influence.”

The controversial election last April resulted in just over 51 percent of voters approving constitutional reforms, which eliminates the office of prime minister and allows Erdogan to possibly hold onto power for years to come.

White cautions investors about hurricane scams ‘Beware of any promoter promising quick and high returns on your investments’ Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is cautioning investors to watch out for opportunistic investment scams in the wake of widespread damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“Natural disasters like this one have many stories which highlight the best in people as neighbors help neighbors, but these situations can also bring out the worst in people, particularly those seeking to profit from the misfortune of others,” said White. “Illinois residents should be aware of companies and individuals offering investments involving the aftermath of these hurricanes.”

White, who runs the Illinois Securities Department which regulates

investment advisors and securities brokers, urged investors to watch for hurricane-related scams, including unsolicited email, social media messages, or telephone calls promoting investment pools or bonds to help storm victims, water-removal or purification technologies, electricity-generating devices and distressed real estate remediation programs.

“Beware of any promoter promising quick and high returns on your investments,” White said. “Con-artists may claim that their companies have government contracts to help with the

clean up or rebuilding effort. Investors should always research the companies and salespersons before investing.”

White’s Securities Department offered three tips to help investors avoid disaster-related scams: Delete unsolicited emails or social media messages and hang up on aggressive cold callers promoting hurricane-related investments, especially those from small companies touting unproven or new technologies or products.

Use common sense. Claims of guaranteed returns or low/no investment risk are classic red flags. Every investment involves some degree of risk.

Do your homework. Contact the Secretary of State’s Securities Department to check that both the seller and investment are licensed and registered. If not, they may be operating illegally.

insula. They decided to headquarter their efforts in the village of Marfranc, right along the Grande Anse River. The first two years were spent building relationships with people in the river villages and building a house for staff and teams.

Since then, New Life for Haiti has built six schools, helped farmers with seed after terrible hurricane floods, and rebuilt many homes after the 2010 earthquake.

They have built a strong child sponsorship program through which children receive an education, food, vitamins, clothing, books and school supplies.

Volunteers built a model school which uses alternative, interactive teaching techniques to give the children of the Grande Anse River Valley a chance at a brighter

future.

For the past year, homes and schools have been rebuilt after Hurricane Matthew destroyed much of their service area in October 2016.

On average, the families they serve live on less than $1 a day, and only 20 percent of the children can afford to attend school.

Hinsdale South came into Friday nights game expecting to take back from Downers Grove South the revered Rebel Cannon trophy exchanged each season between the two teams since 1966.

And, The Hornets scored on the first play from scrimmage after executing a double pass from senior wide receiver Joe Mazzei to senior Steve Farina for a 78yard strike that gave them a 7-0 advantage with only 17 seconds gone in the first quarter on their way to a 31-17 win over the Mustangs.

“I knew I was wide open and just focused on bringing the ball in when it was in the air, I didn’t want to drop a sure touchdown” said Farina. “That’s a play I’ll never forget.”

gether a solid drive and looked like the score would soon be tied but Hinsdale senior linebacker Charles Franklin silenced the home crowd after picking off Mustang senior quarterback Alex Hanek and taking it to the house 85-yards putting the Hornets up 13-0 midway through the first.

Amazingly, Franklin would pick another Hanek pass and return it for a score at the start of the fourth quarter for a 98-yard return and ending the defensive onslaught 31-17.

Hanek (24 of 56 for 251 yards, 1TD, 4 INT) was under pressure all night and had three batted balls while being sacked four times in the loss. “Our defense kept us in this game,” said Hornet coach Mike Barry after the win. “They frustrated our offense and we couldn’t sustain any momentum but our defense shut them down. This is a big win for us on the road and we take back

Truex wins at Chicagoland Speedway - again

After winning the the regular season title, Martin Truex Jr. didn’t waste any time punching his ticket to the second round of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup playoffs in Sunday’s Tales of the Turtles 400, the Playoff opener at Chicagoland Speedway.

At was Truex’s fifth victory of the season and second-straight in Joliet.

“Definitely excited to be able to come to the first round of the Playoffs this year and cap it off with a win,” Truex said. “(I am) Proud of my team. It was not an easy day by any means. We had the speeding penalty, the issue with the lug nuts on the pit stop. Think we went from last to third in 80 some laps in stage two. That felt pretty good.

“Then honestly, just kept tweaking our car all day long. It was not where we wanted it at the start of the race. Probably through the first 50 or 80 laps, we were off a little bit, just kept getting it better and better. I thought by the last hundred laps of the race, it was really, really good.

The win this year came with a bit of a new twist, as race sponsor Nickelodeon dumped slime on

The Mustang offense moved the ball up and down the field and was able to draw to within a score 23-16 midway through the third but the interceptions killed at least three real scoring opportunities and any momentum Downers had in their comeback attempt.

“I just spent about five minutes in the bathroom washing my hands and face trying to get all the green stuff off,” Truex said after the race. “I remember watching Nickelodeon as a kid, watching that show where it was like an obstacle course thing, they would get slimed all the time. I thought it was hilarious. It’s a lot funnier to watch people get slimed than it is to get slimed. It’s a lot slimier than I expected. It was definitely worth it to get that after the race today.

A week ago, Truex seemingly had the win wrapped up, but a late caution allowed Kyle Larson to beat him on the restart and take the win.

While this win was big, he said he was not thinking about last week in the car.

“You know, I don’t know. I mean, I think last week was last week. We got over it by Monday or Tuesday, focused on Chicago,” he said. “Just trying to move forward and look forward each and every week and race one race at a time.

“We knew that this week was a big one. We wanted to come here and just run like we knew we could, not do anything out of the ordinary. Most importantly not let the pressure dictate how we raced or what we did. I think we did that.”

“Our defense played well but we made some bad plays in key situations tonight and that made it tough for us” Mustang coach Mark Molinari said after the game. “They had 28-points we gifted to them tonight and I give them credit they had a good play to start the game but I think we beat ourselves tonight with the mistakes. They flat out just beat us tonight.”

Coming into the race the leader in points, Truex said he was not coming in to make a statement.

“As far as making a statement, I don’t think we really came here to do that,” he said. “I think we just came here to race, try to race to the

best of our abilities, and at the end of the day accomplish what we feel like we’re capable of. That’s what we did.

third, followed by Denny Hamlin, Larson and Brad Keselowski.

NCC heats up in second half, earns win Timely playmaking across all three phases of the game helped the North Central College football team overcome a hearty opponent Saturday evening, as the Cardinals turned up the heat in the second half and emerged with a 26-13 victory over College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rival Illinois Wesleyan University at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The fifth-ranked Cardinals (2-0, 1-0 CCIW) went into halftime tied with the 16th-ranked Titans, 13-

13, before taking the lead for good midway through the third period and allowing the visitors to travel just 20 yards total on their final five possessions.

“Our defense was fantastic in the second half,” said North Central head coach Jeff Thorne. “They really did a great job. (IWU) is a really good football team, and there’s no question they’re one of the top teams in the conference this year, so we’re very happy to come out with a win.”

North Central opened the scoring on its second drive of the contest, traveling 65 yards in nine plays and reaching the end zone on Broc Rutter’s 13-yard pass to Andrew Kamienski. The Cardinals’ Nick Bernabei recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, giving the hosts possession just seven yards from the goal line, but the IWU defense stood tall and North Central called on kicker Liam Crotty, who connected on a 22-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10-0.

The Titans (2-1, 0-1 CCIW) got on the board on the next possession, converting a pair of third downs before extending the drive with a 24-yard completion from quarterback Brandon Bauer to tight end Andrew Apel on fourth down-and-23 at the North Central 30-yard line. Bauer ran for a sixyard touchdown on the next play, though the Cardinals’ Billy Douds blocked the extra-point attempt to leave the score at 10-6 near the end of the first period.

Crotty capped off a 12-play, 66yard drive with a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter to push the Cardinals’ lead to 13-6, but IWU responded once again as a 46-yard screen pass from Bauer to Matese Scott got the Titans to the North Central one-yard line.

Two plays later, Bauer completed a four-yard TD pass to Apel, tying the score at 13-13 with 7:46 left in the first half. IWU’s drive for a goahead score just before halftime was thwarted by Tyler Oakley, who

intercepted a pass deep in Cardinal territory with 1:22 on the clock.

The Titans had the ball first to start the second half, but once again, the North Central defense put an early end to a promising drive as Tommy Sora picked off a pass and returned it 31 yards to midfield. Rutter’s 24-yard pass to Kamienski on third-and-nine got the Cardinals in striking distance, and Kamienski hauled in his second TD pass of the night two plays later, this time from 18 yards out, to put the hosts back in front at 20-13.

Crotty was called upon twice more in the fourth quarter to help put the game on ice, and the senior converted field goals of 33 and 39 yards on consecutive drives. With four successful field-goal attempts, Crotty tied the North Central single-game record set by Nick Dace against Augustana College in 2013 and tied by Dom Zavaglia against Carthage College in 2014.

Should I keep a separate account for this business, or just roll it into our regular checking account?

SYDNEY DEAR SYDNEY, It’s very important to have a separate account, or accounts, for small businesses for two reasons.

One, it’s a huge help when it comes to taxes and tax season. It will also give you a much clearer picture of how your business is actually doing. Whether you’re talking about revenue or tracking expenses, it will give you an easy-to-read report card.

Even if the business is small and is going to stay small, I would want to know – almost as an intellectual exercise – which of my products were winning in the marketplace.

This would help you concentrate on the ones that are making you money, and allow you to focus less on the ones that aren’t doing so well.

So yeah, you need to keep a separate business account, and preferably a separate checking and savings account on your business. Make sure 100 percent of the income from the business goes into those accounts, and only expenses associated with the business come out of those accounts. With really small side businesses, your checkbook register can almost become a simplified profit and loss statement.

Money problems and fights over money are the number one cause of divorce in our country today.

Continuing to deal with these issues, with the help of a good, caring counselor will create even more communication.

I think you’ve both realized you’re going to be in a mess if you don’t address your income and money management issues. However, her concern about spending more time together and becoming closer is valid. Since you’ve just started the rebuilding process, maybe you could put off the extra jobs for a month or two – but no longer. That should give you both time to talk, hug on each other a lot, and start developing a solid plan together for the future!
