Downers Grove festival a hit with art-lovers Original works by 50 different artists displayed

The 40th annual Downtown Downers Grove Fine Arts Festival attracted hundreds of artists and art lovers last weekend.

The festival ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, and featured entertainment and dozens of booths full of different types of art.

The festival featured the work of 50 different artists, who all exhibited original works.

Festivalgoers got peruse the samplings of art, which was all available for sale at the festival.

The festival, which was held downtown on Main Street from Grove to Curtiss streets, also

featured live entertainment and a kids art project, which was sponsored by the Indian Boundary YMCA. Other sponsors for the event were D3 Financial Counselors, the Downers Grove Visitors Bureau, My Special Toy Store, Beil & Stromberg, Smile Downers Grove, Timberline Train Shop, and Tivoli Bowl & Tivoli Theatre.

Entertainment was provided by the West Town Chorus Quartet, Larry Conklin, the Downers Grove Choral Society and several others.

Art for sale included jewelry, ceramics, mixed media, paintings, photography, graphics, wood, metal, drawings, fibers, sculptures and even furniture pieces.

Several universities from around the country were available, and people went through his selection searching for their own

college.

Police chief calls it a career New event looks to after 39 years with department showcase Westmont’s artistic side

Tom Mulhearn to officially retire Oct. 7 After almost four decades with the Westmont Police Department, Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said he will hang up his badge next month.

“It has been my honor to serve the people of Westmont,” Mulhearn said in a statement announcing his plan to officially retire Oct. 7. “I have worked on several serious crimes in which we brought criminals to justice, but my greatest pride comes from being able to serve all of the wonderful people I have met and worked with.

“I have been lucky to forge great friendships that I value very much.”

Mulhearn began his career in law enforcement in 1974 as a cadet-dispatcher for the Broadview Police Department, and he became a police officer with the Westmont Police Department in 1977.

Prior to becoming chief of police in 2009, Mulhearn held many positions with the Westmont Police Department, including patrolman, detective, juvenile officer, sergeant, detective division commander, school resource officer, deputy liquor commissioner, deputy chief of police and acting chief of police.

“Tom has been a great ambassador for the village of Westmont,” said Mayor Ron Gunter. “He is so well liked and respected by not only our residents and the community, but also by the numerous police departments throughout the area. We have great praise for Tom and all he has done.”

During his 39 years with the Westmont Police Department, Mulhearn earned a number of awards and accolades. In 1998, he received the Joseph T. Gurak

Nonprofit ‘connects’ with Louisiana flood victims Sharing Connections of Downers Grove raising funds for relief efforts Bugle Staff A Downers Grove-based nonprofit is joining organizations nationwide in relief efforts to help those affected by the recent flooding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Sharing Connections of Downers Grove recently launched the Baton Rouge Flood Relief Fund, which it says will contribute 100 percent of proceeds to vetted agencies within Louisiana actively engaged in support efforts.

“Our goal is to simplify the giving process for people in this area

and encourage them to help their neighbors in the south,” Sharing Connections CEO Deborah Rickert said. “People have lost their homes and belongings. Children cannot go to school. Food and necessities are nearly impossible to get.”

More than 60,000 homes in Louisiana were damaged and 13 people were killed as a result of torrential rain storms and extensive flooding in early August.

Rainfall totals measured by the National Weather Service suggest that these storms dropped as much as three times as much rain

as Hurricane Katrina. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has designated 20 parishes in southern Louisiana as federal disaster areas.

As a result, approximately 109,000 people or households have applied for housing assistance.

“We pray for all who have been impacted directly and indirectly,” said Leanne McGrath, Sharing Connections’ founder. “We know our generous donors will extend their helping hands through the fund we’ve established, just as they bless us with their generosity each day for those we serve here in our area.”

“The chamber is truly excited to provide this unparalleled event to showcase the many fine arts businesses and organizations to the community,” Chamber Board President Al Carson said. “This is a without a doubt the ‘can’t miss’ event for September.”

According to the chamber,

Westmont is home to 14 businesses and organizations related to the arts, and the village has become an artistic hub of sorts for residents of the western suburbs.

The fine arts festival will provide attendees with information about the many resources, training and opportunities available to the community.

The event will also feature a variety of artistic entertainment, including 10-minute dance performances from Expression Dance Studio, Hinsdale Dance Academy and Salt Creek Ballet; theatre performances by Progressive Village Performance Network; musical performances

by Musician’s Workshop and Uncle Jon’s Music; and various art activities with No Corner Suns.

Proceeds from the event will support scholarships for individuals pursuing a degree in fine arts.

Police offer back-to-school safety reminders Students in Grade School District 58 and Community High School District 99 schools began classes Aug. 29, and police are asking motorists to take it slow and help get the 2016-17 school year off to a safe start.

The Downers Grove Police Department is reminding drivers of various laws in place that ensure the safety of the children walking to and from school each day.

On any two-lane roadway and within school parking lots, all traffic must stop when the school bus has its “STOP” arm extended.

On a four-lane roadway, only vehicles traveling in the same

direction as the bus are required to stop. The penalty for passing a stopped school bus is a $150 fine and a 90-day suspension of driving privileges.

The speed limit in areas posted as “School Zones” is 20 mph on school days from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., when children are present in the area.

The minimum fine for a speeding offense is $150.

When driving near schools, be alert for adult school crossing guards and student patrols that may be assisting children who are crossing the street. Motorists are required to obey the instructions

Department said officers work closely with the bus company First Student to enforce laws pertaining to school buses. Bus drivers will report any stop-arm violations to the police department for appropriate action.

Additionally, the department said patrol officers and traffic officers will be out in force in neighborhoods near area schools to enforce traffic laws.

“Use caution when driving around all schools or whenever you see children in the area,” the department said. “Do your part to make the 2016-17 school year a safe one for our children.”

By Trudy Lieberman Rural Health News Service Recently a tweet from Lauren Sausser, a fine health reporter I know in South Carolina, caught my eye.

“Crazy drug prices became personal.

My dad will start Keytruda regimen on Friday, $15,000 per infusion, once every three weeks indefinitely.” The high cost of pharmaceuticals had hit home!

Her 61-year-old father, Jim McCallister, who lives in Spartanburg, South Carolina, had been diagnosed with a melanoma discovered during a routine skin exam a few weeks earlier.

It had spread to his lungs. Doctors recommended the drug, which uses the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells and has showed promise in treating aggressive melanomas.

McCallister’s employer-provided insurance is paying for most of his treatment, and the family is looking into Merck’s co-pay program. In the meantime, McCallister faces several thousand dollars of out-of-pocket costs.

McCallister may be lucky cost-wise.

But the fact remains: Somebody is paying for the high cost of Keytruda and other new drugs coming on the market. Sausser said her dad asked if insurance would cover the drug. “The doctor told him they would find some way.”

That’s the nub of the dilemma. For many like McCallister, there may be help, often from the drug companies themselves in the form of patient assistance plans.

Remember drug company AstraZeneca’s ads for some of its costly drugs: “AstraZeneca may be able to help”?

Sometimes state or local government programs, private charities, nonprofit agencies, or coupon programs help patients pay for their drugs. Patients who can’t get help from any of those sources often go without.

Escalating drug prices affect everyone – even those not taking expensive drugs or not on Medicare. High drug prices affect all insurance premiums sooner or later. for the drugs, which pharmaceutical makers can set according to what the market will bear. They can pretty much do whatever they want with little push back from those who end up paying the bills – governments, insurers and patients. The U.S. has no cost controls, and government doesn’t negotiate drug prices the way many other countries do.

So the price of commonly prescribed drugs like the EpiPen, a shot that stops life-threatening allergic reactions, has risen to more than $600 for two pens.

In 2009 two pens cost $100.

The price for Abilify, an antipsychotic, has risen 113 percent between 2007 and 2014, and the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor has climbed 103 percent over the same time period, according to The Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing, a group of employers, insurers, and unions that are trying to raise public awareness of high drug prices.

That helps explain why Medicare recently reported its spending on prescription drugs increased more than 17 percent in 2014 even though the number of claims from the program’s 38 million beneficiaries rose only 3 percent.

Medicare’s prescription drug law was never meant to pay all a person’s drug expenses. This year once a beneficiary and her drug plan have paid $3,310 for medicines, she reaches the coverage gap where she must pay the cost of

most of her drugs. If she spends, out of her own pocket, another $4,850 for drugs this calendar year, she qualifies for catastrophic coverage and pays only 5 percent of all her remaining drugs for the year.

The trouble is that with prices so high, it’s easy to end up in the coverage gap paying out-of-pocket. Even protection offered by catastrophic coverage may not be enough. That’s especially true for people taking highpriced specialty drugs.

In 2013, about 3 million people were in this predicament. “Not a lot of people pay above the threshold, but those who do can pay through the nose,” says Tricia Neuman, senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Not long ago I spotted a letter to the editor in USA Today from Heather Block, age 53 who has Stage 4 breast cancer. She was calling for patients to organize and build a network to help craft solutions for the problem of skyrocketing drug prices.

I talked to Block about this. Her zeal and interest in organizing patients reminded me of the early days of the consumer movement in the 1960s when citizens organized to pass legislation to make the marketplace safer and more fair.

With drugs, Block says, it’s hard to organize people because of drug assistance programs that take the sting out of prices and make patients less willing to work against the companies, the presence of disease advocacy groups funded by the pharmaceutical industry, and a general reluctance to speak up for fear of jeopardizing their own health and survival.

When Downers Grove South came to Downers North Wednesday for their yearly crosstown match, it was hard to know what to expect out of either team.

Both teams have dealt with a bit of a roller coaster start to the season.

But on this night it was all Trojans as they cruised to a 2513, 25-18 win.

“We always have so much fun playing against South,” junior outside Clare Delaplane said.

“We know a lot of the girls on the team and it is fun to play them. And there is the crosstown rivalry. I thought we played really well. Our serve-receive was well, we didn’t make a lot of errors and we didn’t let South go on big runs.”

“It is definitely a lot of bragging rights,” senior libero Kendall Tucker added.

The Trojans are an extremely young team this year with just five seniors to go with three sophomores and a freshman allrotation setter.

“It has definitely been different,” Delaplane said. “Me and Kendall have been on varsity the past two years and have had girls who are older than us and were the leaders and now we are the leaders. It is fun being with them and watching them grow.”

“With only a few upperclassmen on the team, we have had to step up and be leaders on the team,” Tucker said. “This is a lot of the freshmen and sophomores first time playing on varsity so we have to help them out. We have been able to mix all of our talents together and help each other the best we can.”

Youth and a difficult early season schedule has led the Trojans to a 2-4 record early in the season.

“We got off to a slow start, but we are definitely on an upward spiral and I’m definitely ready for the rest of the season,” Delaplane said. “We definitely want to win conference and we are in four very competitive tournaments and we want to do well in them.”

“The transition has been a little rough because we play a real tough schedule,” DGN coach Mark Wasik said. “We have had match point with McAuley and Lincoln-Way East, and we have had set point at York and couldn’t finish. But, this is only match.

No. 6, so hopefully we can start converting them to Ws sooner rather than later. It is a little bit of a two steps forward, one step backward with younger players.

I hope they are learning to come out intense for the next point and next match.”

Downers South, Benet win golf matches The Downers Grove South boys golf team beat Addison Trail 163176 in a conference match held at River Bend Golf Club in Lisle. For the Mustangs, Dean Netzel had a 39, Trevor Troha and Cameron Crowley each shot 41 and Riley Dockendorff had a 42.

South in a WSC Gold match held at Village Greens Golf Course in Woodridge 158-174. Netzel led the Mustangs with a 37, Troha and Kyle Soderstrom both shot 40 and Crowley shot 41.

Downers South won the Fenton Invite Saturday. Netzel won the individual portion with a 4-under-

par 66. Dockendorff and Troha each shot a 76 and Crowley added an 80.

“We’ve struggled with letting go of mistakes and basically all the struggles young teams have,” Wasik said. “But we have played against amazing competition and I think it is only going to pay off for us, especially with how close we have played some of these teams already.”

While the front line is very young with mostly sophomore and junior hitters and blockers, the back row is more experienced with juniors and seniors.

“It definitely helps having a strong defense because we can depend on our back row digging balls up,” Tucker said. “We know the kind of hits that are coming to us and then we can depend on our setters and hitters putting the ball down for us.”

That strong defense helps freshman setter Elizabeth Dunlap, who has a bright future in front of her.

“She had a really good night and put the ball in the best spot for us,” Wasik said. “She did a great job of exploiting South’s weaknesses with her setting locations. She is relaxed and has really good hands. It is just

Jasper Requiron followed in 38th place at 17:47. Sam Asa (44th, 17:59), Kyle Casper (58th, 18:41), Jake Dooley (77th, 19:30) and Tom Dea (88th, 20:23) finished the scoring.

“We’ve made a lot of improvement over last year and we’re getting a lot of help from some of the younger runners,” Wolf said.

We have the athletes. We just have to be more disciplined.”

It is the passing that needs the most improvement moving forward.

“Offensively we have a tough team. We have a great offense,” Kurth said. “Defensively we have to make plays to keep ourselves in the match. We have a huge front row and we have to be able to put the ball down, but we have to be able to get the ball to the setter to do that.”

Overall the Mustangs have a mix of youth and experience, including multiple three-year starters.

“We have one sophomore and a freshman up and there have been no problems,” Kurth said. “They have all come together nicely.

The older girls are teaching them the ropes.”

The 16-driver field for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase is set for the opening race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.

NASCAR Chase starts Sunday

After a night in at Richmond that saw Denny Hamlin take his third checkered flag of the season, the Chase grid is set as racing heads to Joliet’s Chicagoland Speedway.

Fans don’t have to look far to find the storylines heading into the Chase.

With the points reset, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch lead the way with 2012 points each – both posting four wins during the regular season.

Keselowski, however, knows that is not a lock for a championship as he posted the most wins two seasons ago and that did not translate to a title.

“We’ve come into this thing with the most wins in 2014 and a lot of momentum, and I felt like we had some ups and downs. We came in last year with one win, and it all comes down to just the same things,” Keselowski said after a fourthplace finish at Richmond. “This is a dynamic environment. What you’ve done in the past is not necessarily representative of what you’re going to see in the future or what you’re going to be able to do in the future.

So you’ve got to keep working and keep your eyes in the windshield, not in the mirror. Momentum is great and it makes you feel good, but it’s a tricky thing to get caught up in it.”

For Busch, he is hoping to build off what he learned last year when he won the championship, but he said some of that was simply good fortune.

“We’ve had good fortune before.

Last year we made it through barely

each and every round. I think we were the last car to transfer through every time. Doesn’t matter if you’re the first car or the last car, as long as you get through the next one, you’ve got an opportunity to keep racing for a championship. That’s what it’s all about,” Busch said. “You know, I feel like the first round’s a good round for us. It’s strong. But you got to have solid finishes and try to minimize your bad days.

“I feel like we kind of are right even with where we were last year, kind of doing the same things. But there are other guys that are better than us. So we’re just going to have to figure out how to out-race them and out-finish them when we need to.”

With the win at Richmond, Hamlin grabs his third win and resets at 2009 points, passing Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Martin Truex, Jr. Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, all who reset with 2006.

Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Chris Buescher and Tony Stewart all enter the Chase with one win and 2003 points. For Stewart, a three-time series champion, this is his final shot at No.4, as he will retire at the end of this season.

Stewart’s last title came in 2011 when he advanced to the Chase without a single win and then started the Chase off with a win at Chicagoland, which propelled him to five wins – including the final one at Homestead for the championship.

“What you do up to the start of the Chase really doesn’t mean anything, obviously. 2011 is proof of that,” Stewart said. “We’ll get started next week at Chicago, and all I care about right now is getting ready for Chicago and running through Sunday at Chicago. Once we get through that,

I’ll worry about week 2. This is a stressful 10 weeks and you take it one week at a time. That’s what we did in ‘11, and it worked.”

While Stewart is leaving the sport, a pair of rookies are headed into their first Chase.

It is the first time since 2006 when Hamlin became the first rookie ever to qualify for the Chase.

This season, Buescher heads in with a win at Pocono, while Elliot joins Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray as the three drivers to advance without a win during the season.

“I’m very excited to be in.

They had the big win at Pocono. We want to work hard to try to get to victory lane ourselves,” Elliott said.

“I think we have a group that can do it and we just got to take these next few weeks and hunker down and give it our best shot. I appreciate our 3M NAPA group for doing that and we’re excited about these next 10.

We have to go in with the mentality that we can give ourselves a chance at Homestead, and if not then we should have let the next one in.”

Elliot, who is driving the No. 24 car and replacing legend Jeff Gordon is also the son of racing legend Bill Elliott and was expected to be a successful driver in the series.

Buescher, one of four drivers for Front Row Motorsports – one of the smaller teams in the series – and is the first driver in team history to advance to the Chase. “[It is] Just really cool to be a part of it at this point. We look at this first round, and we want to make it past that round. We want to move through the Chase, and then we can reevaluate from there,” Buescher said. “If we can keep going farther and improve our program each and every weekend, that’s always going to be what we’re aiming to do. That’s the plan. We’ve got to do and try and progress through the Chase and see what we can pull off.”

Fencing scheme targets Downers Grove business Chicago man charged with felony theft, continuing financial crimes Bugle Staff A Chicago man was arrested in connection to an extensive illegal fencing operation that authorities say has ties to Downers Grove.

Juan P. Balbontin was charged with felony theft and continuing financial crimes enterprise

in Cook County, according to a Downers Grove Police Department news release. The department began working with the Chicago Police Department and Cook County investigators in March, after police learned that items stolen from Downers Grove cosmetics retailer Ulta were being sold to a store owned

by Balbontin.

Balbontin is the owner of JB Fragrances, a Chicago perfume store that authorities targeted as part of an undercover investigation into the purchasing and selling of stolen high-end fragrance products, purses and liquor.

Police say Balbontin purchased items he knew to be stolen in order to resell them at his store.

Investigators confiscated more than 1,800 bottles of perfume from the store.
