Veggie Fest returning to Lisle for 12th year Admission and parking are both free at Veggie Fest Organizers of Veggie Fest 2017, at Benedictine University in Lisle, on August 12 and 13 are expected an even larger turnout for the 12th annual event.

Cypress Cove receives 5-star safety award Woodridge Park District’s Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park earned a five-star award for the risk management audit of the 2017 season. The Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) recently awarded the park district’s water park a five-star award following an unannounced risk management audit.

Swimming facilities are tested on a surprise basis with the auditor hiding outside of the facility, covertly video taping the lifeguards.

While the guards supervise the pool from their chairs, the auditor evaluates and scores the guards’ performances of scanning of the facility. Once the hidden audit is completed, the auditor’s presence is announced and the auditor then selects lifeguards to respond to mock emergency scenarios. Scenarios tested on both days were: EpiPen use, spinal management, sudden cardiac arrest and unresponsive drowning victim.

Classic Car Show revs up fans across area Most recent Downers Grove Summer Nights Classic Car Show held Aug. 4

From the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda to the American Motor Corporation Javlin, pony cars were the stars of the show at the most recent installment of the 25th annual Downtown Downers Grove Summer Nights Classic Car Show held Aug. 4.

Summer was in full swing, and the live tunes of the alternative jazz quintet, Zazz, filled Main Street from Maple Avenue to Franklin Street.

The weekly event returns Aug. 11 for another round to feature Ford, Mercury and Lincoln make and models.

“For the public, it’s great. They’ll just come down here, and they’ll look,” said Bob Markert, the car show’s chairman. “The Village likes the idea… It’s a nice activity, as I like to call it. It’s inexpensive entertainment. They don’t pay. In a cruise, you don’t pay. The cars, they just come and go.”

On a typical night, the event brings in between 200 and 300 vehicles.

“It’s the grand daddy of the cruises of this area, the Chicago area,” Markert said.

Often, hotdog and hamburger restaurants hold cruise nights for people to enjoy.

“This show has been listed in some of the car magazines as one of the Top 10 in the country, and that’s versus shows, not just cruises,” Markert said. “We were the first ones to start [the event] in this area.”

Markert said the key difference between many events of this type and the Downers Grove car show comes down to the street atmosphere created in the downtown area.

“People come and go as they please, and it’s just [popular,]” he said. “It’s a nice place for guys to show cars.”

By the end of the night each week, a trophy is awarded to the car owner whose vehicle is voted Best in Featured Cars.

Mark Johnson, of Downer Grove, said he is a regular attendee of the car show.

“It’s fun. [You] meet people, and nice people [that] just look at the cars,” he said. “I’ve got [a nice car,] so I might as well let people enjoy it.”

Johnson brought in his 1969 Mustang Mach 1 for spectators to view.

“It’s in nice shape,” he said.

“It’s been fully restored to original condition.”

Johnson said he is a big fan of cars.

“I’ve had three Mustangs,” he said.

Johnson said he is drawn to Mustangs because they him down memory lane.

“I had them when I was a kid,” he said. “[It] was always one of my favorite cars.”

Johnson said he likes to take his cars for out for a spin and sought to bury the misconception that classic cars cannot be driven all that much.

“They need to be run,” he said, laughing. “You can just let them sit in the garage. Some people do, though. They don’t touch them.

They put them in a bubble. Why have it, if you’re not going to drive it?”

Markert said the event does a wonderful job of drawing in Downers Grove residents, as well as community members from across the area.

“We do get occasionally people [that] come a distance because they’ve heard of it,” Markert said.

“We’ve had people come out of Ohio, this guy said Indiana. And, I’ll say, ‘Why’d you come?’ Well, [they’ll say,] ‘We heard about it [and had] to come here next.’”

Mark Oles, of Aurora, was checking out the featured cars displayed along Curtiss Street with his son.

“I try to [come every week,]” he said. “We’ve been coming to this car show for years. This [showcase of pony cars] is, I think, usually the best show of the summer.”

Oles said he most enjoys the cars that bring a sense of nostalgia.

“In general, I’m not interested too much in newer [cars,]” he said. “When I was 13—that was 1969—and that was you know when boys started being interested in cars. That blue [Mustang

Mach 1] across the street, that’s typical of that era.”

Oles said he has been a proud Mustang owner since age 21.

“I’ve always had at least one,” he said. “The oldest one doesn’t

run, but we’ve got a ’90 that my son drives and a ’99 that I drive on occasion.”

Oles added that he is glad to know he passed along his love of pony cars to his son.

“I like to keep doing [the Downers Grove car show] if I can,” he said.

Markert said downtown businesses love the way the car show brings people to the area. “[They’re] the ones that back this,” he said. “If they didn’t back this, there wouldn’t be a show.”

The weekly event is made possible due to the Downtown Downers Grove Management Corporation.

“All round, it appeals to the car people and appeals to the general public, too,” Markert said. “Some have car interest, some just like to come and have, like I said, a nice night.”

College is a good thing ... to a college student

BY GREG SCHWEM Tribune Content Agency I entered my daughter’s room to find her knee-deep in a pile of cardboard boxes, plastic containers and garbage bags, all stuffed to the gills. The scene resembled someone preparing for, or returning from, the mother of all yard sales.

“What’s with the purge?” I asked.

“Check the calendar, Dad. I head back to college in two weeks. Just getting an early start on packing.”

“So, you’re actually going back?” I said. “To experience what will be known as your junior year?”

She stopped trying to cram a toaster into a container that looked as if it were made for holding little more than toast.

“Why wouldn’t I go back?”

“You’re a Republican, right? You voted for Trump?”

“Yes, and yes,” she confirmed. “But what does that have to do with my decision to complete my college education?”

“You obviously haven’t read the recent Pew Research Center poll,” I said.

“Nobody has polled me about anything,” she replied, and then added, “Wait, some dude at the basketball game last January was asking questions about our Spring Break plans. Was he from Pew?” I enlightened her on the recent poll from the non-partisan fact tank concluding that 58 percent of Republicans feel college has a negative effect on the country, a 13 percent increase over last year. Colleges are still viewed in a favorable light overall, as Democrats overwhelmingly support their existence, according to the poll. And young Republicans such as my 20-year-old daughter still, on average, view college favorably.

But I wanted her views on higher education before dropping her next tuition check in the mail.

“Does that opinion have anything to do with the fact that you’ll be celebrating your 21st birthday at school this year?” I asked.

“Yes, I mean no, of course not. It’s all about the education, Dad. You want me to have a diploma, right?”

“That was always the goal,” I said.

“But now I wonder what might happen if your first job interview finds you sitting across the desk from some crusty, longtime Republican donor who looks at your college experience on your resume the same way you looked at broccoli when you were 5.”

“That’s another great thing about college,” she said. “I don’t have to eat vegetables.”

“That’s worth the price of tuition,” I said. “But what about the stodgy Republican who may not hire you because of your academic history?”

“I’ll wear a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat to my interview,” she said.

“That should help.”

Not totally satisfied with her answer, I shifted the conversation to other findings from the Pew study. “What is your view of banks?” I asked. “Positive or negative?”

She didn’t hesitate. “Definitely negative. The ATM across from the student union is, like, always busted.”

“Good to know. My point is, do you think banks and financial organizations are affecting this country negatively?

What about churches? Labor unions?

The media?” The Pew study also found markedly different opinions of these institutions, based on political party preference.

“Dad, I’m about to pack my bras. Can you turn around please?”

I did as I was told but didn’t stop the conversation. “Honey, I’m just curious about whether your political views are impacting your opinions on other organizations. You’re 20 and...”

“Almost 21,” she interrupted gleefully.

“Whatever. I guess I just want to be ready for a world where I may have trouble finding a place to worship. Or deposit my social security check, provided there’s enough money for me to actually receive a check. Or turn on the local news at 11 p.m.”

“You’re never awake at 11,” she said.

I sensed the conversation was ending.

“Have fun at school, honey,” I said. “Just promise me that you’ll find a Democrat, have some serious conversations and try to find common ground on issues.

That’s what this country needs right now.”

“Not a problem,” she said. “I do know two of my roommates voted for Hillary.

Yet we’re ALL in agreement that we should go to Cancun for Spring Break.”

Route 66 Raceway in Joliet features many different events all year for those who love to watch cars go fast – very fast.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, Route 66 will hold another one of those events, however there is a twist.

The 2017 D’Arcy Buick GMC Route 66 Classic, which promises an ‘unprecedented level of content that pays homage to the early days of drag racing and hot rod culture,’ will provide entertainment to gear heads, but there are also events for everyone else.

“The heart and soul of this event is the drag racing and the nostalgia with the 1979 cars and older that will be on the track,” said Sara Palya, Route 66 Communications Director. “But, we have revamped it so now it is not only about the cars on the track, it is about the cars in the car corral. It is about that hot rod culture, so we incorporated a group called the Chicago Brush Masters who are known for being at the World of Wheels and they do the almost dying art of pin striping, lettering and air brushing. We have a vintage faire that has anything from

vintage records to clothing to furniture. There is a pin up contest, we have two live bands playing vintage music, there is a Mystery Machine bounce house and temporary tattoos for the kids. There really are things for kids to do, for females to do and for gear heads to do. There is something for everybody.”

The price is also something that suits families well.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person, however, for every adult ticket, a children’s ticket can be purchased for a child 12-years-old or less for only $5.

If you have a classic vehicle, parking in the classic car corral is $20 per vehicle from 11 a.m. until 2 a p.m.

Gates open at 11 a.m. and parking is $5.

One of the on-track events will be the second running of the Will County vs. Grundy County Grudge Matches.

Local officials will be equipped with vehicles provided by D’Arcy Buick GMC, and will select a local charity to benefit from their participation in the event. In 2016, Route 66 Raceway’s charitable foundation, Racing Advocates for Community Enrichment (R.A.C.E.) donated $21,000 to SEE CLASSICS PAGE 9

Taking on partners not a good investment It’s a gradual process, but I don’t teach or advise people to go into partnerships or borrow money DEAR DAVE, I want to build an 18-unit apartment complex, but I don’t have enough cash to do it on my own.

My net worth is around $400,000, and I have $100,000 I can put toward this project. It is estimated to cost $1.2 million.

Would lining up investors, who will take a percentage of the profits, be the same thing as acquiring debt?

JAY DEAR JAY, It wouldn’t be the same as taking on debt because if there are no profits, the investors get nothing.

It’s more like taking on partners and what you would call an equity

position — meaning they’re owners in the business. They may have only limited rights as owners, but essentially you’re taking on partners.

There’s a method that was used in the old days that’s still available today called syndicating a piece of real estate.

You would set yourself up as the general partner and set the investors up as limited partners. They would be limited in their input, because the general partner runs the show.

They can be given the lion’s share of the tax write-off, and the depreciation schedule. Traditionally in those models, the general partner takes less of the depreciation schedule but gets a fee for running things and has a position of ownership.

There’s a restriction under Blue Sky Laws on the number of limited partnership units allowed before it becomes a situation where you’re selling stock.

Check with your state and current securities laws to be sure of the exact number to avoid any impropriety.

You can do a limited partnership or syndicate a piece of real estate, but they can both be very messy and time consuming for the money you get out of it.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a good method for you to buy an apartment complex at this stage of your investing life.

It’s more like a way for you to

get into the business of running a bunch of limited partners with a ton of paperwork and bookkeeping thrown in. It doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to me.

If I were in your shoes, I’d use the $100,000 in cash to buy a moneymaking property — maybe a nice rental house.

Then, save your money, invest and buy another one. And again, save the money, invest and buy another one, over and over again.

It’s a gradual process, but I don’t teach or advise people to go into partnerships or borrow money.
