Council faces more change after 2nd resignation Gina Vattimo announced resignation from Downers Grove Village Council Aug. 21 By andrea earnest bugle staff

The Downers Grove Village Council is facing even more change, following the abrupt resignation of Gina Vattimo on Aug. 21.

Vattimo was elected in April 2015 and only served on the council for 15 months.

Vattimo wrote a brief, twosentence resignation letter

that was posted on the village website, where she stated that it had “been an honor to serve” the community.

The letter was addressed to Mayor Martin Tully and the commissioners on the village council.

Vattimo wished the best of luck to the council and said she was grateful for the opportunity to have served the community.

“It’s been my privilege to serve the Downers Grove community and to work with the highly skilled

and dedicated members of the village council and staff,” Vattimo said.

She went on to personally thank Tully.

“I would especially like to thank Mayor Tully for being a great mentor as well as someone who cares deeply about Downers Grove

and its future,” she said.

In response, the mayor thanked Vattimo for her time on the council.

“While her time on the village council was short, her contribution were many and meaningful,” he said. “Her service to the community is very much appreciated.”

Vattimo’s resignation came just days after the council filled a vacant seat left by former commissioner David Olsen. Olsen resigned last month after being selected to serve the remainder of former State Rep. Ron Sandack’s term in the Illinois House.

Marge Earl was appointed

as Olsen’s replacement Aug. 16 and will be sworn in Sept. 6.

She currently chairs the zoning board of appeals and is on the comprehensive planning ad-hoc committee.

Now, the village is once again searching for a replacement commissioner. The council is scheduled to meet Aug. 30 to discuss the vacancy. The person appointed will fill the position until an interim election in April 2017.

The council is now tasked with selecting a candidate. It will start by considering applications received during the process to fill Olsen’s former seat.

Local librarian receives 2016 Davis Cup

Award recognizes individuals making outstanding contributions in library services for children A well-known children’s librarian at the Downers Grove Public Library was recently awarded the 2016 Davis Cup Award by the Illinois Library Association Youth Services Forum.

Sharon Hrycewicz will be presented the annual Davis Cup Award at ILA’s annual conference on Oct. 18.

The award, which honors Marion Davis and her service to children at the Des Plaines Public Library,

recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in library services for kids. Hrycewicz has done just that.

As reference and technology coordinator at the Downers Grove Public Library for 20 years, Hrycewicz was an early adopter of computer and online technologies.

Her important work in this area continues.

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 released its annual report to the community detailing its accomplishments and curriculum from last school year.

District 58 includes 14 schools; Belle Aire School, Henry Puffer School, Hillcrest School, Lester School, Whittier School, El Sierra School, Herrick Middle School, Indian Trail School, O’Neill Middle School, Fairmount School, Highland School, Kingsley School, Pierce Downer School and Grove Children’s Preschool.

The Grove Children’s Preschool serves 200 students and qualifies for gold rating on the state audit.

According to the report, last year, staff improved curriculum by introducing a parent application called Seesaw. Seesaw provides a digital portfolio highlighting each student’s achievements and interactions. Teachers can post pictures of the students learning throughout the day and share them with parents.

The report also shared that students succeeded on the MAP assessment testing. For the third consecutive year, the district used the Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures of Academic

For the 2016-17 school year, the district will also expand its kindergarten program, OKEEP. “OKEEP offers kindergarteners academic enrichment in literacy, math, social studies and science, as well as exploration in physical education, music, socialization and play,” the report stated.

Last year, the program piloted at five schools, and the program will not be districtwide. Participating kindergarteners attend the existing half-day kindergarten program in the morning and then continue to OKEEP enrichment in the afternoon.

The district also welcomed several new administrators for the 2016-17 school year, including Katie Novosel, Lester Assistant Principal, and new District Assistant Superintendent for Business and Chief School Business Official David Bein.

According to the report, District 58 serves approximately 5,000 students preschool through eighth grade from Downers Grove and portions of Darien, Lombard, Lisle, Oak Brook, Westmont and Woodridge.

“We let the kids, teachers and parents learn these new skills in a fun, informal way,” she said. “It’s perfect for the public library.”

After 20 years at Downers Grove Public Library, Hrycewicz said she still enjoys coming to work each day.

“My first storytime kids are in college now,” she said. “It’s very satisfying to see how they’ve grown and who they’ve become. Their families are a part of my life. It’s great. It’s all great.”

Hrycewicz will also be recognized during the Oct. 19 Youth Services Author Breakfast.

Harvest Fest brings more than chili to Downers Grove this fall New all-day festival set for Oct. 1 The Downers Grove Park District has revamped its annual Chilympics Chili CookOff, transforming the event into a full-day festival.

Harvest Fest will offer food, live music, a craft fair, children’s activities, beer garden and fun for the entire family. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Oct. 1, will be held at Fishel Park in Downers Grove.

And, residents who have a great chili or salsa recipe can get the recognition they deserve, as well as a cash prize at the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market CookOff. The first place recipient of the 2016 Chili Cook-Off will take home $350, second place will receive $250 and third place will receive $100. The first place recipient of the 2016 Salsa Competition will take home $100, second place will receive $50 and third place will take

home $25.

The Salsa People’s Choice Tasting will tentatively take place at 12:30 p.m. and People’s Choice Chili Tasting will tentatively take place at 1:30 p.m. Competitor applications will be accepted until Sept.

This coming Sept. 5, we’ll celebrate Labor Day. This is a time where summer nears its end and the fall season is about to begin. Many have traveled far or near with family and friends.

A new travel agency specializing in escorted travel adventures for young adults with special needs is making a big impact on our community.

Take, for example, my friend Kari Winter of Downers Grove. This past June 20 - 24, she participated in a weeklong escorted travel adventure with Atypical Travel. This is a new travel agency that was founded by Peggy Koutas. Peggy created this organization to help others, like Kari, have an opportunity to travel with their peers who have similar special needs, or “diverse-abilities” as Peggy says.

Prior to beginning Atypical Travel, Peggy was a Special Education teacher at Elmhurst College’s ELSA program.

The ELSA program is Elmhurst College’s educational program for young adults with developmental disabilities. It was here where Kari

first met Peggy.

Having been in the disabilities field for more than 35 years, Peggy was looking to take her teaching experience outside of the classroom to create travel adventures for her students with “diverse-abilities.”

The idea to start Atypical Travel came about as she was “frustrated as a teacher to see all activities in school and my students were always excluded,” said Peggy.

After taking about a year to develop the details of embarking on her own travel business, Peggy was ready to embark on her first adventure with her group of special travelers.

Fast forward to today, Kari Winter stayed in touch with her teacher, Peggy. Today, Kari is a traveler with Peggy’s Atypical Travel agency. This past summer, Kari and a small group of others with special needs took off on an adventure to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.

“On that trip I went on I saw something called the Bridal Cave and took a tour of it,” said Kari. “The tour guide told us a legend story that

went with it.”

Atypical Travel is unlike any other escorted travel company. The group of travelers stays as a family. They rent luxury vacation homes, which give the travelers the opportunity for independence.

Atypical Travel “gave me an opportunity to travel independently,” said Kari.

Travelers like Kari have had an overwhelmingly positive experience filled with many memories. Parents have seen an improved level of independence of their adult child with special needs.

This autumn season, Peggy and Atypical Travel have plans to embark for the Florida Keys in October 2016 and internationally to Costa Rica in November 2016.

Next year in 2017, the special travel agency has adventurous plans to go to Utah, to Colorado and even to take a cruise. In the future, Peggy hopes to create job opportunities for individuals with special needs who want to work in the travel industry.

Downers Grove North dominated the time of possession in the season opener at home against Lockport.

The Trojans ran more plays, had the ball longer and were in the red zone more times.

Despite all that, North did not score an offensive touchdown until the final seconds of the game and lost to the Porters 20-9 in first game of the 2016 season.

“They finished, we did not,” said Downers Grove North coach John Wander. “We moved the ball, but when it came to crunch time, they dominated crunch time. Our offense in the red zone was dog crap. We have a very young offense. We have two quarterbacks playing and a sophomore and all underclass linemen and it showed in crunch time that we were young.”

While Wander was not happy with the execution, he knows it will be a teachable moment for the young Trojans.

“I can’t wait to watch film with them,” he said. “They will see that they have to be technicians.

They are young and they have to put their head on the right side and step the right way.”

Downers Grove North looked like it would strike early, as it forced a Porter fumble during the opening drive.

North got in the red zone for the first time in the game and had a 22-yard field goal attempt blocked by Lockport’s Josh Baker.

Baker was also credited with a pair of sacks and a pass break up, drawing the attention of Wander.

“The player of the game was (Josh Baker),” Wander said. “He caught us on our speed option.

He was all over the field. I give him compliments, he played a nice football game.”

The blocked field goal led to the first Lockport touchdown, which was set up by a big run from John Snidanko. Ben Davis then hit Payton Fernandes for the initial score.

Experienced Lisle tops youthful Westmont

When rivals Lisle and Westmont matched up in an early season tilt and despite the Lions walking off the field with a 5-0 win, the game was a measuring stick for both teams.

For Lisle, it was a step in the right direction after a season-opening loss.

“In our first game against Manteno, we played a decent game, but didn’t play a lot of our own stuff,” said Lisle coach Paul Kohorn.

“In this game, we played our offense better and that is what I was looking

for. On defense, we played well individually, but we didn’t play well in support, so we will have to work on that.”

The Lions have their sights set on not just winning games, but winning championships.

“We still have a possibility to win the conference after a 2-1 loss in overtime to Manteno, but we can’t make any more mistakes against Peotone and Herscher who are the other powers and Streator who has a good team this year,” Kohorn said.

“We also want to make a deep run in the playoffs. Last year we only made

senior, it was the initial step in what coach Andrew Slaga looks at as a two-year build. “This team is very young. We don’t have a single senior on the whole team and we have eight freshmen.

Our starting keeper is a freshman and I think they all fell into place and played very hard,� coach Slaga said. “We have something special going. We won’t lose anybody, so I am trying to build this team over two years and this was step one. I am proud of the boys.�

This group of guys should be all-conference and if they focus on their goal, they have the ability to be All-State. I want to see the seniors truly show the ability to lead and set an example for the

younger players.

Goals: Overall, the goal is for the team to have fun and put forth their best effort, which will lead to victory. As always the goal is for the team to be a team and look out for each other. Also, for each golfer to realize as an individual player he is as good as the effort and determination he puts forth.

Slaga was happy about what he saw, despite the final score. “When we did what we wanted to do, which was combination play and try to get it wide, we looked good. When we focused on that and we did it, it looked good,� he said. “The plays that we got out of that and the chances we created were good. We have to stay focused for the whole 80 minutes and I think a little bit of fitness can help because at the end of the game we looked tired. When four guys all ask for a

sub at the same time - that is very tough.�

Leading the young players will be a quartet of club players – including coach Slaga’s brother. “We have four players that play on club teams, Ben Ledwon, Trevino Fukar and Liam Slaga are juniors and Matthew Camacho is a sophomore and they are all strong players and are very smart soccer wise,� coach Slaga said. “This is a cool group of guys. There are no egos on this team.�

“The defense is playing fast.

I was happy with the defense besides the two sprint draws in the first half that hurt us and a couple of the passes over the middle were pretty much unacceptable. In the second half, besides what we gave them, that was it,� Wander said. “Defensively, second half, we dominated. We gave them an easy touchdown with an interception.�

Not only did the defense get better in the second half, the young offense also settled down, at one point posting a 21-play drive that chewed up more than 10 minutes off the clock, unfortunately, it did not result in a score.

Nick Taviani, the passing threat in the two-quarterback system, finished the game 18-38 passing for 201 yards with one interception. Taviani connected with nine different receivers in the game. “I felt like in the beginning, it was tough with the line because we have a young line and a couple of the snaps were over my head. But, in the second half we pulled it together,� Taviani said. “This is the first game and we will get better. We still have eight more games and I feel like we got the first varsity game jitters out of the way and we will get better.

We have to execute, we got in the red zone, we just didn’t execute.�

Paying cash doesn’t make it smart There’s a pretty good chance the Tiny House movement is just going to be a fad Dear Dave, What is your opinion on paying cash for a “tiny house”?

Wes Dear Wes, This may be a really un-hip or uncool thing to say, but I wouldn’t buy a tiny house at all. Paying cash for something like that might make the mover smarter, but that still doesn’t mean it’s a smart choice.

Now, don’t take what I’m saying the wrong way. I don’t have a problem with people who build tiny houses or buy them. My problem with these things is that there’s no track record on them.

There’s also a pretty good chance they’re going to be just a fad. Another problem is that you’d have a really small market when it comes time to sell your tiny house. In other words, they probably won’t go up in value like a traditional home. They may actually lose value over the years.

There’s a thing in economics called the supply-demand curve, and from what I’ve seen tiny houses also have a tiny demand and pretty narrow market appeal.

Their appeal seems to be mostly for early adopters and people who think they’ll never be able to afford a house.

That means they’re not going to have broad appeal when you get ready to sell them, either. And that creates a problem.

I could be wrong, though. I mean, if enough people buy tiny houses and they become a real part of our culture, then maybe they’ll do okay.

But right now it’s an unproven product line and an unproven concept.

So I wouldn’t buy a tiny house.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even buy one at half of its current value because I’d be afraid it would drop to a fourth of its value. There’s just no proven record at this point of these things going up in value.

I’m also sorry this was never taken care of or discussed while he was still alive.

There are a lot of emotions at play, so I don’t want to beat you up too much. But legally, he didn’t have to leave you anything in his estate. The stuff we’re talking about, money included, was his to do with as he saw fit. It was a little odd that he didn’t address this with you beforehand, but there are lots of instances where kids get nothing from an estate or not as much as others. It’s not uncommon.

In my mind, and, from the sound of it, his too, he left you an equal share minus what you still owed.

He loaned you the money, and he had the right to set terms on that.

I understand your frustration. You feel like he took something away that was yours. My point is it was never yours; it was his.

I know it still hurts though. This is one of the reasons I advise never borrowing money from, or loaning it to, relatives. The best of intentions can end up in places like this.

‘Firecat’ finds unconditional love Firefighters saved the animal in the nick of time and turned the feline over to West Suburban Veterinary Associates In April 2015, a Westmont man set fire to his home, while his helpless cat remained inside. Firefighters saved the animal in the nick of time and turned the feline over to West Suburban Veterinary Associates, an animal hospital in Westmont.

Jeff Vidt, a veterinarian with WSVA since 2007, examined the cat and found it had been severely neglected. The animal could eat, but because the muscles in its legs atrophied, he couldn’t stand or move. In addition, his fur was covered in his own waste and severely matted.

Staff, who dubbed the rescued animal Firecat, shaved off the matted fur and began to help restore his strength and use of his legs.

“At first, it was once around the island in the treatment area ... slowly, we increased his challenges as he grew stronger.”

“Our hearts break for the many mistreated dogs and cats in the world,” WSVA owner Dr. Alan Main said. “We all have an obligation to give back to our community.”

Janet Mazzocco, practice manager at WSVA, said technicians designed Firecat a gentle obstacle course, which they incentivized with treats. “At first, it was once around

the island in the treatment area,” she said. “Slowly, we increased his challenges as he grew stronger.”

Today, Firecat is 100 percent healthy. His bed is in a cozy corner in the cat ward, but when allowed, Firecat likes to visit staff members.

“He’s his own little man,” Mazzocco said. “He is sweet, lovable and feisty.”

The WSVA practice manager said Firecat’s favorite food is turkey, and, despite his harrowing tale, the loveable animal fears nothing.

“He’s just the coolest cat,” Mazzocco added.

A WSVA employee, Patrick Hurley, adopted Firecat and plans to bring his new feline friend with to Virginia Tech, where he will study veterinary medicine. “We will miss him terribly,” Mazzocco said. “But, we are thrilled he’s found a loving home with Patrick. We will still get to see Firecat when Patrick brings him in for his yearly check up.”
