Woodridge police hold open house to thank community

Screeching sirens and a police department full of people would usually be cause for concern, but that wasn’t the case last week when Woodridge police invited the community to learn about the department and meet local officers.

In the wake of recent targeted shootings of police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dallas, the Woodridge Police Department on July 28 held an open house and ecumenical service in order to foster a closer relationship with the community and show support for law enforcement. The department said it has received an outpouring of community support following the fatal shootings.

During the open house, kids and parents were able to walk through the station, talk to different officers and detectives, look at various police gear and equipment, and even sit inside an actual police car.

Education, or DARE, officers were also on hand to promote substance abuse prevention and hand out some free gifts, including pencils, cups and stress balls.

Visitors could also look at the tactical gear and shields that police officers use, as well as head over to the fingerprinting station where a detective was answering questions about the process.

Police then led a tour through the booking room, where officers process arrestees into the police station, and the holding cells, where inmates are held before being transported to DuPage County Jail or posting bond.

Police bikes, ATVs and cars were also set up for people to get in and take pictures. Hundreds of people attended the event, touring the facility, learning about community policing and thanking officers for their service.

Westmont mayor ends 40-year career with park district Ron Gunter plans on being more involved in mayoral role, spending time with grandchildren Longtime Director Ron Gunter recently retired from the Westmont Park District after four decades on the job.

Gunter, who became the mayor of Westmont in 2013, will serve as a transition advisor with the park district while he continues his position as village mayor.

“Ron has been a great leader for the park district for so many years,” said former Park District President Bob Bernas, who also recently retired. “The park district has grown tremendously under his tenure. Westmont has been lucky to have Ron serve the community.”

Now with his retirement underway, Gunter plans to be even more involved in the community with his role as mayor. He recently became a grandfather for the third time, and Gunter said he plans to be very active in the lives of his grandchildren.

To honor Gunter for all of his accomplishments, the Westmont Park District dedicated its main facility in his honor, naming it the Ronald J. Gunter Administrative Center.

Downers Grove council member to take Rep. Ron Sandack’s seat in state House By jonathan samples managing editor

Downers Grove commissioner David Olsen will serve the remainder of a former Republican state Rep. Ron Sandack’s term in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Olsen, who is also the vice chairman of the College of DuPage Board of Trustees, was selected

by DuPage County GOP Chair Brian Krajewski and Will County GOP Chair Kathy Havel to fill the vacancy in the 81st House District, as well as take Sandack’s place on the November ballot.

“I’m excited to get to work representing the people of the 81st district,” said Olsen in a news release announcing the appointment.

The vacancy came after Sandack abruptly resigned his House seat late last month, citing concerns over cybersecurity issues and an “ugly” political landscape.

Olsen, who said he will resign from his seat on the Downers Grove Village Council, is expected to be sworn in as 81st House representative Aug. 3. He will complete his term as vice chairman of COD’s board of trustees, citing a need for “stability” during the institution’s time of rebuilding.

“For too long, politicians in Springfield have ignored the needs of Illinoisans, doubling down on a tax-and-spend agenda that has clearly failed our state,” Olsen added. “I intend to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the entrenched interests in Springfield, and I will fight to give taxpayers a voice.”

Olsen, 27, is a longtime resident of Downers Grove. He studied finance and management at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. While in school he became student body president and was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist.

After graduating, Olsen was

elected commissioner on the Downers Grove Village Council.

He also serves on the Board of Directors for the District 58 Education Foundation and is an active member of Chamber630, an organization that serves businesses in Downers Grove and Woodridge.

Fellow Downers Grove Council member Greg Hose is running as the Democratic candidate for the 81st House District race in November. Both Hose and Olsen were elected to the Downers Grove Village Council in 2013.

The 81st District includes parts of Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Darien, Lisle, Naperville, Westmont and Woodridge.

Taste of Westmont, street fair survey available to residents The Westmont Special Events Corporation is looking to improve community events such as its annual Taste of Westmont and street fair by making a community survey available to all residents.

“We want to get this survey out to the public right away to get people’s ideas and suggestions quickly just after the event,” WSEC President John Chorney said.

In a flash I thought, oh God, the civil war has started.

Then the headlines shifted and, for the moment, “normalcy” returned.

It’s a Trump-sated normalcy that’s anything but, of course, and the most recent heavily reported violence (at least as I write these words) the murder of three police officers in Baton Rouge - blends into the endlessly simmering turmoil known as the United States of America.

And the civil war, in fact, started long ago. But until recently, only one side has been armed and organized.

That’s why the two latest police killings, by disciplined, heavily armed former military men, loose a terrifying despair. The victims are fighting back - in the worst way possible, but in a way sure to inspire replication.

When people are armed and outraged, the world so easily collapses into us vs. them. All complexity vanishes. People’s life purpose clarifies into a simplistic certainty: Kill the enemy. Indeed, sacrifice your life to do so, if necessary. I fear this is still the nation’s dominant attitude toward its troubles. We’re eating ourselves alive.

One way this is happening was described in a recent New York Times story, “Philando Castile Was Pulled Over 49 Times in 13 Years, Often for Minor Infractions.” Castile, who as the world knows was shot and killed by a police officer during a routine traffic stop on July 6, was a young man caught in a carnivorous system pretty much all his adult life. Every time he started his car, he risked arrest for “driving while black.” The Times quotes a Minneapolis public defender, who described Castile as “typical of low-income drivers who lose their licenses, then become overwhelmed by snowballing fines and fees.” They “just start to feel hopeless.”

The story goes on: “The episode, to

many, is a heartbreaking illustration of the disproportionate risks black motorists face with the police… The killings have helped fuel a growing national debate over racial bias in law enforcement.”

A growing national “debate”? Oh, the politeness! How much racism should we allow the police to show before we censure them? It’s like talking about the “debate” we used to have over the moral legitimacy of lynching.

Here’s Gavin Long’s contribution to the “debate”: “One hundred percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors, from victims fighting their bullies, one hundred percent have been successful through fighting back through bloodshed. Zero have been successful through simply protesting.

It has never been successful and it never will.”

Long, the former Marine who served a tour of duty in Iraq, shot and killed three police officers in Baton Rouge July 17, 10 days after Micah Johnson, the former Army Reservist who served a tour in Afghanistan, shot and killed five police officers in Dallas.

America, America . . .

What we have here is a toxic mixture of racism and militarism and guns.

We’re in the midst of an endless war against evil - or terror, or whatever - in the Middle East, a war that has pretty much been fought by lowincome recruits who see military service as a way out of poverty. This war is a planet-wrecking disaster, though the raw horror created by our bombs and missiles overseas remains largely outside U.S. public awareness.

Fifteen years in, it’s simply “war” the background noise of American greatness. The consequences are somebody else’s problem.

For instance, the sort of news reported last week on Common Dreams hardly makes it into the debate:

“Dozens of civilians, including children, were killed on Monday and Tuesday by U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria.

“The strikes appeared to have been a mistake, with the civilians taken for Islamic State (IS or ISIS) militants, the U.K.-based human rights group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group told the AFP news agency.

“Fifty-six civilians were killed on Tuesday by coalition forces, and 21 civilians were killed by the coalition on Monday. The 77 civilian deaths included at least 11 children.”

But they’re not Americans, so such deaths just aren’t that important to us.

Indeed, the war - and the trillions of dollars it costs - go virtually unmentioned in the surreal race for the presidency that’s currently underway.

Also unmentioned is the fact that the war is being brought home to our gunsaturated society by former soldiers fighting back against racist policing the way soldiers always fight back: They’re killing “the enemy.”

The potential volatility of this barely noticed situation is enormous. If protesters decide to arm themselves as they confront heavily armed police, the violence on both sides could morph into civil war.

The only defense against this is awareness, respect and disarmed openness on all sides of the conflict - openness of the sort that took place this past Sunday in Wichita, Kansas.

On the same day, coincidentally, as the police killings in Baton Rouge, members of Black Lives Matter and the Wichita police department cosponsored what they called a “First Steps Cookout”: an outdoor party with “free food - provided by the police, the community and local businesses - and the opportunity to have open conversations with law enforcement,” according to Huffington Post. Nearly a thousand people attended.

This is what takes courage: to get to know your “enemy.” I know at the deepest level of my being that we can walk together toward such awareness.

This is the only chance we have to disarm our volatile future.

North Course at Eagle Ridge another top stop in Galena

The second course we played at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa was the North Course. Built in 1977, the course has more of a country club feel to it without all the amenities that The General had. However, it was still a fun course to play and offered up some great views.

The opening hole is a 347yard hole from the gold tees (2nd longest tees at 6,402 yards). It is a dogleg right that can plan much shorter than its distance.

Next is a tight and curvy par-5 at 501 yards. It is a dogleg left off the tee but also has a dogleg right on your approach shot to the green, making accuracy vital on this hole. No. 3 is the hardest hole on the course, a straight away par4 at 416 yards. It plays long and tight.

No. 4 is 182 yards and is guarded by bunkers on both sides and plays a bit downhill. The fifth hole is a 482-yard par-5 that doglegs right off the tee and is has a very tight fairway near the green. The sixth hole is a dogleg left that has a more forgiving landing area than many other holes.

The seventh is a gem of a hole with a lake off in the distance in the background. It is 357 yards and is a dogleg left with the fairway sloping right. A long drive through the fairway is as good as gone into the trees. The eighth is a

downhill par-3 at 147 yards with a severely sloped green and trouble off the green.

The front nine ends with a 377yard par-4 that is another dogleg left and is uphill. There is a lot of room to the right on this dogleg to bail out, but a tall tree can block a long approach shot into the green.

The back nine starts with a great risk/reward hole. At 314 yards and a sharp dogleg left, the green is reachable for longer hitters. However, there isn’t much room for the ball to land without it being in trouble as bunkers line up in front of the green to block the shortcut and woods are behind and to the right of the green to snag bouncing balls through the green. It is only a short club to lay up to keep out of the trees off the tree.

No. 11 is a downhill par-5 at 527 yards and takes a good drive to get it over fescue to the fairway.

There also are trees left of the fairway and water right, making it a tough driving hole. No. 12 is 390 yards but is pretty tight, making it another difficult hole.

The 13th hole is just 146 yards, but it is far from easy. It plays a bit uphill and over some weeds and water with bunkers surrounding the green. The green is also tricky and the hole location the day we played was almost impossible as being a couple feet off would send

With the start of the football season just around the corner, the 2016 high school football schedules have been released.

Here is a breakdown of our area teams’ schedules.

DOWNERS NORTH The Trojans (5-5) open the season as they have done the past several years - against Lockport (4-5) with this game being at home. That is followed by a game at Proviso East (0-9).

West Suburban Silver Conference play opens with a

home game against Hinsdale Central (7-3) before a Saturday trip to Glenbard West (14-0), the defending state champ.

The difficult schedule continues with a home game against Oak Park-River Forest (92) before a road game at Lyons (55). The Trojans then step out of conference to face rival Downers South (3-6) at home.

DGN finishes its season at York (4-5) and at home against Proviso West (1-8).

Sainz wins Illinois Open The 67th Illinois Open Championship was contested in St. Charles.

Carlos Sainz Jr. of Elgin had an impressive showing, winning the tournament by five strokes over Christian Heavens of Fairview Heights at 17-under par, a 197 three-round total. He entered the final round in first place and matched the low round of the final round torches to the win.

The top Voyager Media area finisher was Andy Michelson of Lockport. Mickelson, the golf pro at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, finished in a tie for fifth with a 7-under par total, 207. He opened with a 5-under 67 before back-to-back 70s brought him out of contention.

The only other Voyager Media player to make the cut was the defending Illinois Open champ, David Cooke of Lisle. Cooke had

rounds of 71, 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for 29th with a 215 total.

Several locals competed, but came up short of the cut, including several who narrowly missed. Brian Carlson of Plainfield, Chris Ioriatti of Romeoville and Paul Schlimm of Shorewood all shot 146 for two rounds, missing the cut by one shot.

season and are looking for similar success this year. They will open the season with large Interstate-8 schools Sandwich (2-7) on the road and Coal City (5-5) at home.

They open their conference slate with a home game against Seneca (2-7) before traveling to Braidwood to face Reed-Custer (0-9). Home games against Peptone (3-6) and Wilmington (10-1) follow.

Their rivalry game against Westmont (3-6) is next on the road to wrap up conference play. The season concludes with non conference games at home against Manteno (9-2) and at Streator (3-6).

Homewood-Flossmoor (10-2).

That game is followed by a home opener against Hinsdale Central.

West Suburban Gold Conference play opens with a trip to Hinsdale South (9-4) followed by a home game against Addison Trail (4-5).

They go back on the road to take on Morton (3-6) before a home game with Leyden (4-5).

A home game against Willowbrook (5-4) is followed by the season finale at winless Proviso East.

BENET The Redwings (8-3) begin their quest to return to the playoffs against St. Laurence (10-3), followed by a home game against Notre Dame (8-2).

They go to the road for the first time at Marian Central Catholic (8-3) before returning home to take on St. Viator (1-8). They remain at home the following week to take on Nazareth (12-2) before a trip to Marian Catholic (1-8).

The closing stretch is also difficult for Benet as it faces Joliet Catholic (10-2) at home, travels to Marist (9-5) and faces Carmel at home (3-6).

LISLE The Lions are coming off a 7-3

WESTMONT The Sentinels open play at home against Chicago Lake View (1-8) before a road game at Aurora Central Catholic (3-6).

The conference season kicks off with a home game against league powerhouse Wilmington.

A trip to Seneca is up next followed by a home game against Reed-Custer. They go back on the road at Peptone and then conclude conference play at home against rival Lisle.

Nonconference play concludes Westmont’s season with a home game against Streator and a trip to Plano (8-3).

Next is a 383-yard dogleg right that is one of the more forgiving holes off the tee, et is still dangerous. Hole 15 offers up some great views off the tee on the 529yard, downhill par-5. There is a creek guarding the green, making it tough to go for in two, despite the elevation drop.

The 16th hole is 159 yards with water right and bunkers all around and is followed with a 411yard par-4 that doglegs right and features bunkers in tough spots.

The 18th hole is sadly nothing special of a closing hole as it is a slight dogleg left with several bunkers to the left and in front of the green.

It surprised me that the greens here were much faster and had more slope to them. The hole locations made it the most difficult greens I’ve had to deal with. There is more water on this course than The General, and, in my opinion, is just as difficult overall.

The cost is a little cheaper than The General at peak time at $115.

Still, it is unlike most courses you will find in the state and is a good course to pair with The General on a golf trip to Galena.

Justin Dear Justin, I wouldn’t sell the house just to do Baby Step 3. That’s usually a pretty easy Baby Step after you’ve gotten everything paid off except the house. As you know, a fully funded

However, if you don’t like the house anyway, and you’re already planning on selling it, then yes, set some of the equity aside. I wouldn’t put all of the equity into the next

deal. I’d hold back my three to six months of expenses, so that when you move into another house you’re debt-free with a fully funded emergency fund sitting there.

It sounds like there’s nothing to prevent you from selling it today, if you’re sure that’s what you both want to do. Just hold onto enough so that you still have an emergency fund in place, and use the remainder for your down payment. So if that equation works for you, sell the house. If not, you may need to completely save up your emergency fund before you sell in order to make it work.

Regardless, when you move I want you to have an emergency fund and be debt-free in addition to your down payment. That’s what we’re after!

Don’t cut your safety net Dear Dave, I make $25,000 a year, and I’m single. I expect my salary to increase to $35,000 next year, so can I get by with a $500 starter emergency fund instead of $1,000?

I have about $38,000 in debt right now, including student loans, and I don’t know how to keep up with bills and everything if I try saving a bigger emergency fund.

Jane Dear Jane, You really need a starter emergency fund of $1,000 if you’re at a point in life where student loans are in the picture. It might seem like an impossible task right now, but that should be your first big goal. A written, monthly budget will go a long way toward helping you achieve that goal.

Making a budget for your money isn’t rocket science. It’s a simple, written planning process where

you give a name and destination to every dollar you make before the month begins. Food, shelter, clothing, transportation and utilities are necessities, so they come first. After you’ve taken care of those, make sure you’re current on your debts. Once all that is out of the way, put every spare dollar you can into your emergency fund.

If you do this with a sense of urgency, and limit spending to necessities, it won’t take very long.

You’ll be surprised by how quickly it can happen, and you’ll love the newfound sense of security you’ll have in knowing $1,000 is sitting there ready to cover life’s little emergencies!

Woodridge Mini Triathlon deadline approaching Deadline for registering for mini triathlon is Aug. 10 The deadline for registering for Chicagoland’s largest mini triathlon is Aug. 10.

The Woodridge Mini Triathlon is Aug. 14 and geared to participants of all ages and athletic skill levels, and it attracts athletes from all over the metropolitan area and out of state.

Parents and children often participate in their age appropriate categories and cheer each other on as they swim, bike and run. All participants receive a medal, and there are prizes for various age categories.

This year’s event will be

even more fun with live entertainment provided by the CoverGirls Violin Show. Food will be available, and vendors will be on-site.

Now in its 17th year, this annual event is sponsored by the Woodridge Rotary Club.

The event has grown in size and popularity since its first year when it had 50 participants. As it has grown, it has also become the main fundraiser for the Woodridge Rotary Club, and all proceeds are given back to community organizations to assist those in need.

The event is held at Woodridge Park District’s award-winning Cypress Cove Aquatic Park, 8301 Janes Ave., Woodridge, and bike and run paths go through surrounding neighborhoods.

Sisterly Love Village of Westmont looks to develop Taiwanese Sister City program The Westmont Village Board recently directed staff to move forward with the development of a Westmont-Taiwanese Sister City program, which it hopes will lead to the selection of a “sister city” within the next year.

“We’ve been very excited about the development of this program,” Mayor Ron Gunter said. “A program like this speaks volumes about a community’s commitment to diversity with culture, education and economic development. We’re eager to move ahead and get things started.”

Gunter was recently selected as the only mayor from the Midwest invited to Taiwan as a guest of the Taipai Economic & Cultural Office in Chicago. While on the trip, the mayor will meet with representatives of various Taiwanese communities to discuss

Yang is serving as the chair of the Westmont-Taiwanese Sister City Program. She and a number of volunteers also made a Taiwanese cuisine debut at this year’s Taste of Westmont. There were two Taiwanese food booths at the event.

Yang remarked that she received a number of compliments, not only in regard to the food offerings, but also the Sister City Program.
