Drake surprises local girl with hospital visit 11-year-old fan gets both of her birthday wishes one week apart

Sophia Sanchez had two wishes during her birthday week.

One came true when she was surprised by Drake, the 31-yearold Canadian superstar, stopped in to surprise the 11-year-old at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

Just a week after meeting the entertainer, Sophia learned her other wish had come true — she is getting a new heart.

Sophia was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that often leads to heart failure and a need for heart transplantation in order to survive.

She received Drakes attention after she engaged in the “Kiki Challenge” which is a choreographed dance to Drakes song, “In My Feelings.”

Drake was in Chicago performing at the United Center on tour, when the little girl sparked his attention so much so that he stopped by for a visit.

“When I first saw him I screamed, “Oh my God” and I wasn’t sure if it was real or fake,” Sophia said.

Sophia, who was a normal healthy girl that played softball, basketball and cheered, until she her health declined six weeks prior to going into the hospital. “[Sophia’s] coloring was really gray, she had no energy, I had to carry her around from doctor to doctor and she was under care of a cardiologist,” said Natalie Sanchez, Sophia’s mom.

At first, doctors could not figure out what was wrong with Sophia, but Natalie knew they could not give up and needed to find a prognosis.

“We went to a bunch of different specialist, and I took her to emergency room begged for more tests and after we found out [what the problem was], they transferred us to Hope Hospital,” Natalie said.

had to be transferred to Lurie Hospital for proper care.

“Lurie had the VAD (ventricular assists device) and heart transplant we needed,” Natalie said.

Natalie said that she knows what the ramifications could have been if they couldn’t get Sophia to Lurie Hospital, and she is thankful for her progress up to this point.

“We feel blessed we made it here on time because I could of lost my daughter,” Natalie said. “[Sophia] had an open heart surgery about four weeks ago, and it was up and down for the first few weeks, but now she’s getting her energy back and feeling like herself again.”

Sophia is dependent on a machine that pumps her heart for her, and she is waited for a new heart. “[Sophia] has been on this list since July 11,” Natalie said.

For an 11-year-old that has been stuck inside of a hospital all summer seeing her friends enjoying the warm weather, Drakes visit inspired her to keep pushing forward.

“It’s been upsetting [being in the hospital] this summer when I had a lot of fun things planned with my friends,” Sophia said.

“When I saw Drake though, I

thought it was a miracle, and he told me to keep fighting and stay strong.”

Not only did Drake have great words of wisdom, but he also promised he would bring Sophia on stage at one of his concerts while singing a song for her, and he told her that they will remain in contact in the future.

Even though being at a hospital for a long time isn’t easy for anyone, Sophia and Natalie said they have enjoyed the care they have received so far from Lurie.

“Lurie has been an amazing hospital to us,” Natalie said.

“We feel we’re in the best place, everyone’s very nice and they make it the most fun as possible for Sophia that they can.”

Lurie showed care for Sophia by letting her have her birthday party with 20 people invited to increase her mood.

Parents concerned over living arrangements of accused priests Pair of retired priests live near Kennedy Jr. High

An outcry from the schools parents has put the Diocese of Joliet on notice to relocate two priests who were accused of sexual abuse away from Kennedy Junior High School in Lisle Because neither priest has been convicted, there isn’t a mandate for them to not be close in proximity to the school.

The pair of Reverends James Nowak, 81, and Richard Jacklin, 67, live at the St. John Vianney Villa in Naperville retirement home, which is positioned next to Kennedy.

“Both the Naperville and Lisle police departments have been working with our district office staff and me to help bring a quick resolution to this situation,” said Kennedy Junior High School President Brian Valek.

Though both priests have been

accused of the malicious crimes, neither has been convicted or is a registered sex offender.

A group known as “Stop Catholic Cover Up” that has been facilitated caught the attention of the Diocese of Joliet where they wanted to get the main point across to protect the children at all costs.

Nowak is a former pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Naperville where his tenure lasted from 2002-2007.

He was suspended by the diocese six years ago resulting in a $4 million settlement that involved five priests that were accused of molesting young boys from the 1960s to 1980s.

Jacklin, the other accused priest, is up against criminal sexual assault chargers involving a disabled adult in Kankakee County where he will be due in court Oct. 4.

“In the interim, we will be adjusting our supervision schedules and campus usage until a satisfactory solution can be reached,” Valek said. “In addition, the Lisle police department will be providing additional community safety officers to be present for arrival and drop-off times at the start of

the school year.”

With this issue arriving Valek also wants to ensure that students traveling to and from Kennedy Junior High, are consintely aware of what’s going on around them at all times.

“While I believe Kennedy continues to be a safe environment for our students, I want to remind families of the importance of student awareness of safety as they travel to and from school, especially if they choose to walk or ride their bikes,” Valek said. “Students should be aware of their surroundings at all times and report any suspicious individuals or incidents to an adult immediately.”

District 58 celebrates Lester threeclassroom addition with ribbon-cutting Downers Grove Grade School District 58 celebrated the new Lester School addition during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the school, 236 Indianapolis Ave. “I’m so excited that all of our collaborative efforts have finally come to fruition,” said Lester School Principal Carin Novak. “I can’t wait for our students and our staff to begin to leave their footprints in our new learning spaces.”

The $2.24 million Lester project added three classrooms, ADAcompliant bathrooms and a flexible resource space to the school’s east side. The project resolves Lester’s space concerns, and it reorganizes classrooms into elementary (K-3) and intermediate

(4-6) wings.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting will open with celebratory remarks from Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli, Lester Principal Carin Novak and Wight & Company representatives. The Board of Education will hold their fall Budget Workshop at Lester School following the ceremony at 7 p.m.

“Lester’s new addition provides students and staff with wonderful new learning spaces in which to learn and grow, and addresses the significant space constraint issues that have challenged the school for many years,” said Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli.

“I am very proud of the District 58 staff who worked hard to identify cost-effective solutions that provided Lester School the space

it needed. Your efforts paid off! I also thank our Board of Education for their support and approval of this important project.”

Lester School has served students at capacity for several years.

However, a recent increased need for special education and intervention services, as well as the addition of the optional kindergarten enrichment program, required additional classroom space at the school. District 58 worked diligently with its architect, Wight & Company, to recommend a solution that addressed Lester’s needs in a fiscally-responsible manner.

The Board of Education approved a bond sale to fund the project in February 2018, and construction began last spring.

Black Hawk, proud leader of Sac and Fox tribe of Rock River Valley CHUCK SWEENY ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR First, let’s get his name straight. It was Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak. In English, he was Black Hawk, war chief of the Sac and Fox tribe, who lived most of his life in the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois.

Black Hawk was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Sac and Fox village along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois. He built his reputation as a war fighter leading his tribe in skirmishes against the Osage tribe.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a new enemy appeared — Americans, relentlessly moving west from the eastern states, claiming the land for themselves as they went, building homes and villages and fencing off the fields.

The U.S. Army and state militias accompanied the settlers and protected them against the people who had been there for thousands of years. Treaty after treaty was made between the native people and the U.S. government, and they were regularly broken.

One of those documents was the Treaty of 1804, signed in St. Louis by representatives of the Sac and Fox tribe and U.S. officials. Black Hawk, who had not been at the signing, thought the treaty merely ceded some of the tribe’s ancestral hunting grounds to the American settlers.

But the Sac and Fox had been snookered. Actually, the treaty required the Sac and Fox to vanish forever from 50 million acres, their entire homeland east of the Mississippi River.

Black Hawk was so angered that he allied with the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh to fight alongside the British in the War of 1812, which the Americans started in an attempt to take over Canada. The war ended in a draw in 1815. Black Hawk became increasingly agitated as white settlers streamed into his northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin homeland, protected as always by militia and U.S. troops. However, he wasn’t popular among all of his tribe’s men and women.

Most Sac and Fox had resettled in Iowa by 1830 under the leadership of the moderate Chief Keokuk, who was more of a politician than a warrior. He favored

negotiating with the U.S. rather than fighting what he knew was a superior force.

In early 1832, Black Hawk decided to return to Illinois to resettle in the Sac and Fox homeland once again. Because about 160,000 whites now lived there, skirmishes broke out, prompting calls by the fearful Americans to rid the area of “Indians.”

In April 1832, Black Hawk “led some 1,000 Sac and Fox and Kickapoo men, women and children, including about 500 warriors, across the Mississippi River to reclaim land in Illinois that tribal spokesmen had surrendered to the U.S. in 1804,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

They weren’t seeking war. In fact, Black Hawk, now 65, hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement in Illinois. After the cold, hard winter of 1831-1832, they wanted to come back to their old grounds and plant corn where they knew it would yield a bountiful harvest.

Only about one-fifth of the Sac and Fox returned; most stayed in Iowa.

Illinois Gov. John Reynolds requested U.S. troops and called up the state militia, eventually assembled a force of 7,000 soldiers, both regulars and militia members, to fight the Sac and Fox. Meanwhile, throughout the spring and summer of 1832, Americans burned or otherwise destroyed Sac and Fox fields.

One of the sorriest battles in the war took place near what today is Stillman Valley, Illinois. Maj. Isaac Stillman and 275 men were pursuing Black Hawk’s warriors. Black Hawk could not persuade other tribes to join him, so he sent emissaries to Stillman to surrender. But the militiamen were drunk; they fired on the delegation and killed two warriors. Black Hawk planned an ambush in return. In the Battle of Stillman’s Run, 40 Sac and Fox warriors routed Stillman and his 275 men.

claimed about 70 U.S. troops and militiamen as well as settlers. An estimated 500 Sac and Fox were killed.

Among the Americans who took part in the battles were Abraham Lincoln, the future president of the U.S., and Jefferson Davis, the future president of the confederation of rebellious states that seceded from the U.S. in 1861.

As the war proceeded into the summer of 1832, the Americans pursued Black Hawk and his warriors into southern Wisconsin, defeating them finally in August at Bad Axe on the Mississippi River.

On Sept. 2, 1832, the Black Hawk War ended when U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott and Sac and Fox leaders signed a treaty forcing the tribe to cede 6 million acres of land west of the Mississippi River and 50 miles west of the river.

Black Hawk lived out the rest of his life in Iowa, dying near Des Moines in 1838.

He was 72.

In his autobiography, Black Hawk addressed his conquerors, saying: “May the Great Spirit shed light on your path, so that you may never experience the humility that the power of the American government has reduced me to. This is the wish of a man who, in his native forests, was once as proud and bold as yourself.”

The chief is honored in a 40-foot statue by Lorado Taft, above the bluffs of the Rock River at Oregon, Illinois. Although he didn’t specifically call the statue “Black Hawk,” that’s what it’s commonly called.

Benet Academy wins season opener and is determined to reach the state finals this year

DEKALB — After finishing the last two seasons one game shy of the IHSA state finals, Benet Academy is determined to get back this year.

The Redwings took the first step toward that goal Saturday when they defeated St. Laurence 27-10 in the second of three games at the Kickoff Classic on Brigham Field inside Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University.

Benet wasted no time getting on the board when quarterback Colin Gillespie rushed in from seven yards out, his first of two scores on the ground.

“That was key for us. Had we not done that, it would have been a real barn burner for us and it would have been tough,” Benet coach Pat New said. “That

is a great football team. Both teams were really tired today and it was a race of endurance out there.”

Gillespie (9-17 passing, 204 yards) would add another rushing score from nine yards out and would connect with Andrew Eschenbach on a wouldhave-been passing score, however Eschenbach had the ball popped free nearing the goal line, but he recovered in the end zone for the score.

After taking over a season ago because of injury, Gillespie now has the confidence and experience to lead the Redwings.

“Last year I was kind of thrown in and I was nervous, this year I am confident and ready to go,” he said. “The experience really helped me. The speed of the game is really slowing down and the reads are easier.

“We still have to watch some of the careless plays, but he is only going to get better as the season goes on,” he said.

Defensively, all Benet allowed on the day was a Liam McCarthy field goal.

The other seven points came on a Brailyn Johnson 68-yard

interception return for a touchdown early in the third quarter that narrowed the gap to 20-10.

The defensive line was disruptive all day, recording five sacks on the game, something New expects out of his talented group.

“Our defensive line is the best we have had since I have been here and we are expecting a lot of sacks from those guys and it helps when you have a great D line, it helps everything else on defense,” he said.

And while the defense allowed only three points against it, that is still too much to defensive

lineman Jack Benish.

“We try and keep it to zero,” he said. “We try and outplay them every play and every game.”

After the Vikings’ pick six, Benet answered with a Ben Hickey 5-yard TD run. Hickey posted 77 yards on the ground.

After earning the first win of the season, the Redwings are looking to keep the momentum going all the way to the Class 7A state finals in Champaign.

“Our goal is 2-7-5,” Benish said. “Two nonconference games, seven conference and five playoff games and we have to get to that championship games.”

Mustangs blanked by Bolingbrook

Bolingbrook opened the season with a resounding win, blanking Downers Grove South 35-0 to kick off the IHSA football season.

South started the game off seemingly on the right foot, holding the ball the majority of the first quarter behind the running of Devean Washington (and Jayden Lambert, but could not get on the scoreboard.

“They had that ball for like seven minutes and you like to come in base and see what each other is doing,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. “That is the thing with the first game. We didn’t know what they were going to do against us and I am assuming they didn’t know what we were going to be doing on offense. It’s a chess game in the beginning.”

Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari knew the team has to take advantage of that first drive.

“It unraveled a little bit there,” Molinari said. “We are playing some guys both ways and I think you saw a little bit of the wear and tear there. I think our guys need to be honest with themselves as to where they are in their conditioning and what it is going to take to get this done.”

Bolingbrook opened the scoring oneminute into the second quarter on a seven-yard scamper from Michigan State recruit Anthony Williams, Jr. and never looked back.

Five minutes later, Quentin Pringle got in the mix, scoring from eight yards out.

Pringle would add another score with 1:08 in the period from 25 yards out.

Williams, who also handles kick-off duties, then squibbed a kick that was recovered by the Raiders.

“He was told to squib it and it ended up onsides,” Ivlow said.

On the ensuing play, junior quarterback Devyn Suggs found Williams on a 48-yard pitch and catch to give Bolingbrook a 28-0 halftime lead.

The lone scoring after intermission came on Williams’ third score of the game, again from seven yards out.

Williams ended the game with 152 yards on 17 carries and two scores, adding three catches for 64 and one TD. Pringle chipped in 134 yards and two TDs on 14 totes.

Suggs was 7-for-15 for 94 yards and a touchdown in his Raider debut.

Despite the final score, Molinari knows there are things to build on.

“There were some things we can pull out from the first drive,” He said. “They are a good football team, they have two

Division-I kids and they are explosive, but we didn’t help them.

We played two quarterbacks (Lambert and Cole Warehime) and that wasn’t perfect. We have to look at the tape. We have our whole season ahead of us. I thought we had some bright spots, but there are

some areas we have to tighten up. It was disappointing, but we are going to correct it and we will make some noise.”

On the flip side, Bolingbrook was happy to get out with the win and health.

“We had two defensive tackles starting on the offensive line, a new quarterback

and a bunch of new guys on defense, so it was a good way to start the season,” Ivlow said. “A win is good.”

The Mustangs battle Oak Park-River Forest, while Bolingbrook takes on St. Charles North in week 2 action.

I don’t see a reason to set aside more than six months of expenses. My recommended range for an emergency fund is three to six months of expenses. If your employment situation is one where there’s more risk of something going wrong, you should lean toward saving six months’ worth. If your employment outlook is really stable, you can go with setting aside three or four months of expenses in an emergency fund.

I look at your situation as being more high-risk. You each have jobs, so that’s the good news. But if the company went down, or experienced layoffs, you could find yourselves unemployed at the same time. My advice would be to save up six months of expenses for your emergency fund. With that kind of cash just sitting there, you should be able to make an easier and less stressful transition in almost any kind of unemployment scenario or other emergency.
