Fire department rescues cats from apartment fire The Downers Grove Fire Department was responded to a general alarm August 14 at an apartment fire at 5152 Fairview Avenue, Downers Grove.

Firefighters encountered smoke coming from a bedroom in a second floor apartment.

The fire was out in less than 20 minutes. No firefighters were injured in this incident.

Several varieties of pets were located in the unit.

Fire Chief Jim Jackson rescued one of the cats which was provided oxygen by firefighters with the department’s equipment designed specifically for pet rescues.

The Downers Grove Fire Department was assisted by the Downers Grove Police Department, and the Lisle-Woodridge, Darien-Woodridge and Westmont Fire Departments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The end of summer is traditionally marked by the Labor Day holiday, often celebrated through picnics, pool parties and other gatherings. Sadly, the Labor Day holiday also can be one of the deadliest because of motor vehicle crashes related to drunk and drug-impaired drivers.

Once again, several area police departments are joining the Illinois Department of Transportation to stop drunk and drug-impaired drivers and help save lives.

The high-visibility enforcement campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” runs from Aug. 21 through the early morning hours of Sept. 5. During this period, law

enforcement across the state will show zero tolerance for impaired driving.

Officers also will be looking for seat-belt law violators. This comprehensive effort aims to reduce impaired driving and help make zero fatalities a reality on Illinois roads.

National statistics show a frightening trend in drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,265 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2015, an increase from 9,967 people killed in 2014. This is why the Woodridge Police Department is working with IDOT to remind drivers that drunk driving is not only illegal, it is a matter of life and death.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs is a massive problem in Illinois with more than 300 people dying annually,” said Deputy Chief Tom Stefan-

son. “Alcohol- or drug-impaired driving is not acceptable behavior. It is essential to plan a sober ride home before you go out. We make zero exceptions for impaired driving. There are just no excuses.”

Woodridge Police recommends the following safe alternatives to drinking and driving: If you will be drinking, designate a sober driver before you go out.

Plan to use public transportation, call a cab or use a ride-sharing service to get home safely.

If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.

Have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get them home safely.

The 2017 Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is funded by federal highway safety funds from NHTSA and managed through IDOT.

Zero tolerance enforcement begins DuPage Sheriff’s Office begins its annual zero tolerance School Zone Enforcement Campaign

It’s that time of year again that has most parents smiling as children head back to school.

What that also means is the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting its annual

Zero Tolerance School Zone Enforcement Campaign.

The campaign is underway and continue for approximately four weeks.

wants the public to know that the Sheriff’s Office takes Zero Tolerance very seriously.

The Undersheriff stated, “Our deputies will be out in force and if you violate a traffic law in a school zone you should expect a citation.”

The purpose of this traffic safety campaign is to raise public awareness about the dangers of driving recklessly in school

zones and to remind people that school speed zones exist for a reason - to protect the children.

This campaign is designed to protect children of all ages and to show motorists that driving recklessly around children will not be tolerated.

CENTERPOINTE SHOPPING CENTER UPDATE Centerpointe Shopping Center is located at 75th Street and Woodward Avenue. staff contacted over 20 grocery stores to promote the site, as well as several other retailers looking in the Chicagoland area. These efforts serve to bring residents more shopping opportunities as well as bring additional sales tax dollars into the community.

KIWANIS PEANUT DAYS The Kiwanis Club of Downers Grove invites you to help the community through the purchase of peanuts or gummy bears through September 16. Terrorism for profit No one should have the authority - the power - to declare any war whatsoever

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY Donald Trump stands cluelessly at the edge of history, exemplifying everything wrong with the past, oh, 10,000 years or so.

The necessity for fundamental change in humanity’s global organization is not only profound, but urgent.

Trump’s latest outburst about North Korea’s nukes - threatening that country “with fire, fury, and frankly power the likes of which the world has never seen before” creates a comic book Armageddon scenario in the media, except, of course, his power to launch a nuclear war on impulse is real.

What this makes clear to me is that no one should have the authority - the power - to declare any war whatsoever. The fact that this is still possible, so many decades into human awareness of war’s utter insanity, reveals the paradox that civilization remains economically tied to its own destruction.

Another icon of this paradox is Erik Prince, immensely wealthy mercenary, notorious founder of the terror organization Blackwater, who had cozy ties to the Bush administration back when the 21st century’s endless wars were just getting underway and now, with another unelected Republican in the White House, has recently made a grab at the business opportunity still represented by these wars: Let’s privatize the quagmire!

Sixteen years on, the war in Afghanistan is the longest in American history, and presently in a state of “stalemate,” according to the mainstream consensus that unquestioningly justifies this country’s ongoing militarism. For instance: “The U.S. can’t win but can’t afford to lose,” USA Today opined in a recent editorial about Afghanistan, inanely demanding that Trump “at least should decide what to do next” and setting the stage for Prince’s business plan, which is to

restructure and privatize the war.

In an op-ed a few days ago in that same publication, Prince wrote: “The option to simply abandon Afghanistan is enticing but in the long run would be a foreign policy disaster. The Kabul government would collapse. Afghanistan would be a rallying cry for global jihadists.”

And suddenly there it was, the American paradox in full splendor: Oh yeah, we’re fighting terrorists.

We have to keep killing people, keep pouring trillions of dollars into our wars, because bad people are out there threatening us because they hate our freedoms. And the guy reminding us of this is the founder of Blackwater, private contractor in Iraq, whose mercenaries were responsible for one of the most shocking acts of lethal aggression - a.k.a., terrorism - of the early years of that war.

Blackwater contractors were accused of “firing wildly into cars stalled in midafternoon traffic at Nisour Square on Sept. 16, 2007, pouring machine-gun bullets and grenades into crowds, including women clutching only purses and children holding their hands in the air,” as the Washington Post reminded us recently.

What you might call American terrorism. It may, at some quasiconscious level be religiously motivated. Indeed, Jeremy Scahill, reporting in 2009 for The Nation on the lawsuit filed on behalf of Iraqis harmed in the Nisour Square massacre, wrote that, according to a former Blackwater employee who testified in U.S. federal court during the trial: “Prince ‘views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe,’ and . . . Prince’s companies ‘encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life.’ . . .

Furthermore, Scahill wrote, “Mr.

Prince’s executives would openly speak about going over to Iraq to ‘lay hajiis out on cardboard.’ Going to Iraq to shoot and kill Iraqis was viewed as a sport or game. Mr. Prince’s employees openly and consistently used racist and derogatory terms for Iraqis and other Arabs, such as ‘ragheads’ or ‘hajiis.’”

This all fits quite horrifically into the definition of jihadism, or terrorism, but because it’s American, it brings something extra to the table as well. This is terrorism for profit. And it’s been going on for a long time, in a realm far bigger than that occupied by Erik Prince’s business interests. You could call it colonialism, or the domination complex. The world is ours. This is the “greatness” Trump sold to enough Americans to squeeze into the Oval Office.

Not only does he have no patience with a military stalemate in Afghanistan - “we aren’t winning, we’re losing” - but he can’t stand the fact that the shattered country’s mineral wealth isn’t in our hands.

At a recent, well-publicized meeting with his generals, Trump “lamented that China is making money off of Afghanistan’s estimated $1 trillion in rare minerals while American troops are fighting the war,” according to NBC News.

“Trump expressed frustration that his advisers tasked with figuring out how the U.S. can help American businesses get rights to those minerals were moving too slowly, one official said. . . .

“The focus on the minerals was reminiscent of Trump’s comments early into his presidency when he lamented that the U.S. didn’t take Iraq’s oil when the majority of forces departed the country in 2011.”

Trump leads a political system that’s still grounded in the colonial era. His reckless arrogance is its global face. He stares at the audacity of nuclear-armed North Korea and threatens to blow it to kingdom come, imagining that there will be profit to reap in the aftermath.

Needless to say - it was a struggle to find continuity on offense with so many players rotating through the position.

The good news is that Greenwald is back and healthy for his senior season. Greenwald has recovered nicely and put himself on the radar of several colleges with his one-day camp performances. He will have to lead the way for an offense that will be replacing most of the skill positions and offensive line.

The offensive line has good size, look for Max Foster, sophomore Shawn Lee, and senior Nick Battaglia to protect Greenwald in the passing game.

On defense: Downers South defense will lead the way for the Mustangs in 2017. Returning potentially six starters in the front seven should be the key to a strong Mustang defense. This is headed by Sergio Villalobos, who is the returning WSC Gold Division Defensive Lineman of the Year. Our linebackers will look to Anthony Martinez for leadership. Martinez played in all nine games last year as a junior and should be a leader among the defense. In the secondary, Cooper Gafron will be a returning starter and Alex Hanek will join him as a returning player who contributed on defense last year.

The team will reach its goals if: We know how hard we have to work and we are pretty fired up for the season. The key will be will be playing sound defense and executing on offense and special teams. This team has a lot of great team chemistry and I think that will be great.

Conference outlook: Marist is loaded with talent and I think Nazareth will be back stronger than they were last year. Joliet Catholic had a rough year last year, but they return a lot of players and I think they will be back and Carmel will be better.

On offense: I think this is one of the better offensive lines

I have coached and I am excited about that. We are big up front and they are a really good group of guys. The offense always starts with your offensive line. We return two of our top receivers in seniors Jack Eschenbach and Nick Keyes. Senior Matt Boyle is at quarterback this year. Matt has played in varsity games the last two years and he is ready to go. He is looking good in the preseason.

On defense: We have two main returning starters in senior cornerback Ben Cooney and senior Devin Petersen at middle linebacker. We only have the two guys returning, but we have a lot of guys coming up that we are excited about. Connor Reid has looked really good for us at strong safety.

We have a transfer from California, Connor Burke, at linebacker. With our third linebacker, Michael Wymer, they may be the best three linebackers that we have had since I have been head coach.

On special teams: Our kicker, Victor Karam, is back and he is a heck of a nice kicker. We have

Avoid home improvement debt

DEAR DAVE, I’m debt-free except for my home, and I’m considering having solar panels installed on the roof of the house. It would cost about $27,000. I have $80,000 in savings, but the company doing the installation will finance it all for just one percent interest. It’s almost like free money. My electric bills average around $310 a month, and I thought this would be a good way to save money in the long run.

What do you think?

MICHAEL DEAR MICHAEL, If you have to finance the project, my answer is no. My guess is the

break-even analysis you’re trying to give me is the sales pitch your solar panel company gave you. That’s how they sell solar panels, but it doesn’t justify going into debt.

You told me you have around $80,000 in savings right now. Why not just write a check? Let me ask you a question. What if you could borrow $10 million at one percent interest and put it in the stock market? Would you do that? Of course, not. It would be way too risky, right? Basically, we’re talking about the same kind of thing. I made you feel the risk by scaling things up in my scenario. You’re not feeling the risk right now because we’re talking about $27,000 instead of millions.

This move wouldn’t bankrupt you, but wealthy people don’t do the kind of thing you’re talking about. Either pull the money out of your savings account and buy the panels, or don’t buy them at all!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I make $48,000 a year, and I have $35,000 in credit card debt. I owe

$25,000 on my home, and I was thinking about taking out a loan against my house to pay off the credit cards. Is this a good idea?

MIKE DEAR MIKE, I would never advise anything like this, unless it’s to avoid bankruptcy. Here’s the problem with that kind of plan. Most people who do that kind of thing don’t change their financial habits. In fact, they end up with a new mortgage and new credit card debt somewhere down the line.

You need to start building a track record of paying off debt. Cut up the credit cards, slash your spending, and start living on a tight, written, monthly budget. Prove to yourself that you’re not going to take out a mortgage and turn around and run up a bunch of new credit cards.

I want to see you not take on any new debt and reduce that $35,000 credit card bill dramatically over the next six months. If you can knock out half of it in a year, you can take care of the other half in another year or less. Then, you

wouldn’t need a second mortgage!

Legislative Update from David Olsen SCHOOL FUNDING DEBATE CONTINUES IN SPRINGFIELD In response to the Senate’s August 13 vote to override Governor Rauner’s amendatory veto of SB 01, members of the House of Representatives were called to the Capitol on Wednesday, August 16. But rather than bring SB 01 to the House floor for any type of vote, leading Democrats engaged in political games and ultimately admitted the bill would not be called. House members left Springfield that day with no agreed path forward for funding Illinois’ 852 school districts for the school year that is just starting.

Upon adjournment for the day, I expressed my disappointment with the lack of progress: “The political posturing that took place in Springfield today was in no one’s best interest, especially the families that are counting on us to do our jobs and fund their kids’ schools. We spent time on political theatre and on fake votes, but the truth is, both SB 01 and the Governor’s amendatory veto changes are both dead.

Neither SB 01 nor the amendatory veto have the supermajority support needed to pass in the General Assembly. The ultimate school funding solution will be contained in a different piece of negotiated legislation. The only real solution involves true compromise, and I am encouraged to know that the leaders are returning to the negotiation table. I hope their discussions bring agreement on a school funding plan that is

fair and equitable for all K-12 students in Illinois.

“The four legislative leaders met on Friday to discuss a possible compromise that will allow state aid to flow to schools without further delay. They plan to meet again on Tuesday, and I am hopeful their efforts will find the needed compromise to resolve the school funding issue.”

REPRESENTATIVE OLSEN JOINS GOVERNOR FOR SIGNING It’s no secret that a great number of Illinoisans are fleeing the state due to the crushing tax burden. In fact, I hear almost daily from constituents who are desperate for property tax relief. On Monday, August 14, I was proud to stand with Governor Bruce Rauner, Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and a bipartisan group of lawmakers in DuPage County as the Governor signed into law a bill that makes it easier for units of government to consolidate or dissolve. By simplifying the process through which consolidation can occur, unnecessary or duplicative layers of government can be eliminated and the burden on taxpayers can be reduced.

Illinois currently has more than 7,000 individual units of government, which is about 1,000 more units than any other state in the nation. SB03 helps reduce the number of units of government and thus save taxpayers money in three key ways: Expands a successful DuPage County consolidation model statewide allows for the dissolution of coterminous townships and provides townships with a

process for consolidation Many of the provisions included in SB03 were recommendations included in final report of the Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force of 2015, which sought to remove obstacles to consolidation and provide clear and modernized standards for consolidation. There remain further steps to take to help taxpayers, and I look forward to continued bipartisan collaboration on this issue. The provisions of SB 03 will take effect on January 1, 2018.

REP. OLSEN STANDS IN SUPPORT OF HOUSE RESOLUTION CONDEMNING TERRORISM IN CHARLOTTESVILLE In response to the recent violence in Charlottesville, VA that left one person dead and several others injured, members of the House of Representatives stood together on August 16 to unanimously approve a House Resolution condemning violence and hate. HR 569 repudiates and con-

demns white supremacists, neoNazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and any other group that espouses hate and seeks to undermine the ideals of Illinois and the nation. The resolution also condemns the acts of violence in Charlottesville as domestic terrorism.

During the floor discussion of the resolution, I spoke about how we need to stand together against violence, hate and intolerance, and how we should use the horrific events in Charlottesville as an example of why we must build bridges to defeat evil in our country. Last Monday, I stood arm-inarm with hundreds of people from all walks of life at a Naperville vigil to remember the victims of the acts of domestic terrorism in Charlottesville. We were united by our commitment to inclusiveness and tolerance, and as a bulwark against hate, bigotry, and racism.

GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL CO-SPONSORED BY OLSEN THAT REMOVING STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS Legislation I co-sponsored that removes the statute of limitations for prosecution of felony sex crimes against minors was signed into law by Governor Bruce Rauner on August 11. When a child is exploited through an act of sexual assault or abuse, there should not be any limitations that would hinder the prosecution of the perpetrator. Law enforcement must have every tool at their disposal, and lifting the statute of limitations for these heinous crimes removes a hurdle that has allowed some offenders to escape prosecution.

SB 189, signed into law as Public

Act 100-0080, provides that when the victim is under 18 years of age at the time of the offense, a prosecution for criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual assault, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, or criminal sexual abuse may be commenced at any time. Under previous laws, many cases held a 10-year or 20year statute of limitation for prosecution. The provisions of the new law take effect immediately.
