Benedictine president resigns August 10 Search for successor expected to take six to nine months

Benedictine University in Lisle will be in search of a new President as Michael S. Brophy announced his resignation to the Board of Trustees August, 10.

Dr. Brophy will be committing to a year long sabbatical in search of higher leadership and educa-

tion, school officials said.

“It’s been an honor to sustain the Benedictine mission during my tenure as president,” Dr. Brophy said in a release. “Recent developments at the University prepare Benedictine to move to the next level as a first-choice regional Catholic University as well as a thought-leader in our sector.”

Brophy started his tenure in 2015 coming over from Mary-

mount California University where he took over from past President, William Carroll.

The news that came about was a shock to some people because Brophy signed a contract extension through 2022 just last year.

Throughout his three years as the schools leader, Brophy was well known for his development of education and other programs involving the school.

“I appreciate the steps Dr. Brophy took to strengthen the Benedictine, Catholic mission of Benedictine University,” Abbot Austin Murphy of St. Procopius Abbey, the University’s founding order said. “The hiring for mission policy and the strategic plan, which he initiated soon after becoming president, will serve the University well in the coming years.”

With the resignation coming just a couple weeks before fall classes start on August 27, a search committee headed by Mr. Daniel

Rigby, vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, will immediately start the process of determining who will be Dr. Brophy’s successor.

“It’s been my honor to serve Benedictine during this formative time in the University’s history,” Brophy said. “We are truly fulfilling the Benedictine hallmarks in all we do.”

The committee will have representatives from the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, administrators, students, the monks of St. Procopius Abbey and alumni of the University all collaborating within the process, school officials said.

Even though Dr. Brophy has had sustained success at the Univeristy, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the past President.

A total of seven monks from Lisle’s St. Procopius Abbey filed a lawsuit shortly after his arrangement saying that the university

had denied their rights as members of the university, including the right to interview job candidates and vote for the university’s new president.

Benedictine’s former associate director of media relations, Elliott Peppers, filed a federal lawsuit against the school last summer claiming civil rights violations, discrimination and a virulent work environment In the meantime, Charles Gregory, a recent recipient of an honorary doctorate from Benedictine University will serve as the interim president during the search process held by the school, school officials said.

Gregory previously served as Executive Vice President of Benedictine University, and was the CEO of the Mesa Campus Benedictine University.

It is expected that the search process will last anywhere from six to nine months.

Opinions on revenue raising proposals impacting issues debated in Springfield The DuPage County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to put three tax-related referendum questions on the November 2018 General Election ballot.

Two of the questions seek voters’ opinions on revenue raising proposals impacting issues debated in Springfield. One asks voters to weigh in on a proposal to help reduce state debt. The other asks voters’ opinions on an alternative method to fund transportation projects. The third question focuses on the County’s Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative.

Local teen wins International Geography Bee

sity division of the International Geography Bee that was held in Germany is not on most high school boy’s lists of goals.

“I’ve been very interested in Geography for a very long time, probably since I was about three or four years old,” the Westmont

resident said.

An incoming senior at Timothy Christian High School, Seth has taken interest in the particular field of Geography, has been involved since he was little according to his mother, Angela.

“When he was young, I actually put this map on his wall of the United States which was an illustrated map that had some components of each state and commerce laws,” Angela said.

“We just kept adding little resources and knowledge for Seth so it would be available to him, and then he just ate it up from there.”

Leading up to Seth’s international competition, he took third place out of 150 participants at the national level in Washington D.C.,while finishing with a 90 percent on the qualifying test.

“I really appreciate Seth’s all around respect and perspective of what he’s interested in, and all that he knows about the entirety of Geography,” Angela said.

The competition that took place in Berlin, Germany from July 11-17 consisted of tests with a written 400-question exam, a global crisis simulator and a showdown head-to-head knowledge competition.

“Each division was different, but in mine there was about 25 to 30 people,” Seth said. “In total, I believe there was over 120 [participants].”

Watching her child perform at such a high level for a long time has rewards, but it is also tough, Angela said.

“Watching Seth up on stage brings a lot of emotions because there’s a part of me where I just want him to do his best, but then there’s another side where it really starts to draw me and bring me in to say okay you got this, you’re going to win,” Angela said.

“You’re so nervous for them but there’s nothing you can do besides sit back and watch them perform.”

Seth said that in most situations he remains calm and

doesn’t get too caught up in emotions, but he was dazzled by the moment in Berlin.

“They had a big medal ceremony at the end which they saved for last, and I thought that was pretty cool and impressive,” Seth said.

“I was surprised because I usually don’t get that excited about things, but it was really neat.”

Seth is not sure if he will take on any more competitions in the near future, but he plans on being involved with Geography when the time comes for him to attend college by majoring in Geography or possibly International Relations.

Rockford region, Illinois a leader in aerospace,aviation tech

Many Illinoisans don’t realize it, but our state is a center of aerospace and aviation technology.

Illinois’ aerospace cluster is centered around the northern and northeastern portion of the state. The Rockford area alone has more than 70 companies in the aerospace supply chain employing 7,000 people, says the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

If you include Chicago and southeastern Wisconsin, “there are more than 200 companies in the aerospace cluster, including giants such as AAR Corp., Northrop Grumman and Boeing,” DCEO says.

Illinois is home to prime contractors and subcontractors that together supply the U.S. military, NASA, Boeing, Airbus and smaller airplane manufacturers with numerous systems and components.

In fact, it’s been estimated that there’s no commercial jet in the air today (apart from those made in Russia) that does not have Illinois-made parts and systems on it.

Why northern Illinois? Sagar Patel, president of aircraft turbines at Woodward Inc. in Loves Park, explains.

“Over time we have built the ecosystem here, with companies that planted their roots here long ago and have adapted to the changing technologies successfully,” says Patel.

In 2016 Woodward, founded 147 years ago in Rockford, built a $300 million factory to manufacture jet engine fuel systems that can be found on most jets. The

new, 440,000-squarefoot plant, which is gearing up to employ more than 1,000 people, is the company’s second in Loves Park. The first one, built in 1941, continues to operate.

The northern Illinois aerospace ecosystem of companies is recognized as having “solid research and development, staying ahead of the competition from around the world,” Patel said. “If you continue doing that, you’ll continue to be relevant and strong,” he said, adding, “as long as we don’t get complacent.

“Customers are looking for continued innovation, quality improvement and cost reduction. If you rest on success, you begin to decline.”

Illinois parts are in outer space, too.

Precision gears made by Roscoe’s Forest City Gear are working today on the surface of Mars.

In 2013, NASA’s $2.5 billion Mars Curiosity Rover was the first robot to drill into the surface Mars, to find evidence of wet environmental conditions in the distant past.

According to Forest City Gear’s website, “More than 70 gears produced and manufactured by Forest City Gear helped actuate Curiosity’s mobility systems and the robotic arm responsible for all critical drilling operations.”

Forest City Gear also produced gears for the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers that landed on Mars in 2004. The firm’s parts are also on the International Space Station.

Rockford’s UTC Aerospace helped design and build the space shuttle for NASA, and has made torpedoes for the

Navy for decades. The firm also built a $50 million testing facility for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and has been a key subcontractor for Boeing. It employs nearly 2,000 people in Rockford.

Boeing , one of the world’s largest corporations, moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001.

The company is in a 36-story building at 100 North Riverside Plaza in the West Loop.

In 2016, Wood Dale-based AAR Corp. opened a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Chicago Rockford International Airport, which is now servicing aircraft from major airlines.

Rockford also boasts UPS’ secondlargest air hub for parcel sorting.

In addition to aviation manufacturing, Illinois’ airports provide jobs for 337,419 people, either directly or indirectly, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation study. Altogether they earn $12.8 billion.

From commercial airlines that serve 11 Illinois airports to the variety of general aviation services found throughout the state, the aviation industry creates more than $40 billion in economic activity, according to IDOT. Illinois also boasts one of the world’s busiest airports, Chicago O’Hare, which in 2016 handled 867,635 flights, according to the FAA. Chicago Midway handled 253,046 flights during the same year.

BENET ACADEMY The last two seasons Benet Academy fell one game shy of reaching the IHSA state finals — and they are looking for that to change.

The Redwings return quarterback Colin Gillespie who was forced into action a season ago because of injury and per-

formed well.

He will have running back Ben Hickey returning beside him in the offensive backfield.

Offensive linemen Shane O’Mara and Matt Kickel return up front to open holes and protect the junior quarterback.

Defensively, Hickey will play defensive back and will join Billy Lawler and Jack Cooney.

Up front, Jack Benish returns his 13 sacks last year, while Jacob Snell and Jackson Stephens add a tough run defense.

Mike Wymer’ returns to the linebacker corps and bring nearly 100 tackles back with him.

NCC looks to move in CCIW pecking order Gearing up to take on all comers from the very start, the North Central College women’s volleyball team will attempt to move up the pecking order in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW ) in 2018 after forging toughness in the fires of a rigorous non-conference schedule.

With conference foes Illinois Wesleyan University, Carthage College and Millikin University occupying the No. 12, No. 13 and No. 16 spots, respectively, in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Rankings, the Cardinals look forward to the chance to challenge some of the nation’s top teams as they look to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish in the CCIW. “Our team has a lot of selfpride,” said head coach Kyle Exline, who enters his second

The Cardinals were voted sixth in the CCIW Preseason Coaches’ Poll after finishing fifth in 2017.

The CCIW Tournament has been expanded from four to six teams this season.

To that end, North Central will look to callous itself against top-level competition in a trio of non-conference tournaments

before embarking on conference play. The Cardinals will play four matches at Colorado College Aug. 31-Sept. 1, including an encounter with the thirdranked hosts, before traveling to tournaments at Loras College and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The CCIW is one of two NCAA Division III conferences with three teams ranked in the top 16 nationally heading into the season.

“The opening weekend, we wanted to go to a tournament where we could play some of the top competition across the country,” Exline said. “We’ll have four really strong opponents that weekend, followed by two weekends playing some of the top teams in our region.”

Exline is optimistic about his team’s ability to navigate such a gauntlet after seeing the dis-

cipline and effort the returning players put forth in their workouts since last season ended.

“We’re seeing a nice culture transformation with a lot of hard work and discipline,” he said. “They’ve become more gritty and more versatile. We moved players around between different positions, and they were able to learn some different techniques, so now they’re able to hold each other more accountable when they’re on the court. They’ve been getting after it in practice and calling each other out, in an encouraging way. They have been able to give and take constructive criticism and have become a very gritty team.”

“Lee has been on the varsity since his freshman year, should represent a dominant force on the inside,” Molinari said.

“Kendall Burrow has received interests from several schools (San Diego, Dayton, and Air Force) will create a dominant inside presence. Ali Issa will start in his third straight season as the Mustangs speed rusher.”

Senior Keegan Garland will return at outside linebacker to add experience to the group.

The secondary will be anchored by Jaelynn Blecke and athletic sophomore Devean Washington.

Work together to raise financially responsible kids DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are not on the same page when it comes to money and our two teenage daughters.

I think they should be learning the value of work and money, but she doesn’t want them to work. She regularly hands them spending money and buys them expensive gifts. I want our girls to have some nice things, but this is starting to cause problems in our relationship. Do you have any advice?

STAN DEAR STAN, Kids should learn to work and make money at an early age. We’ve given nice gifts to our kids, but the difference is they also worked and made money for themselves. The gifts we gave them were for special occasions. Showering our kids with money and expensive toys all the time was not our way of life.

In this situation, your wife is allowing them to be nothing but consumers. I know she loves them, but they’re not learning how to work, and they’re not learning how to save or give. This is setting them up for a lifetime of unrealistic expectations.

If something doesn’t happen to change things, you’re going to end up with two spoiled little girls, who think they should be given everything their entire lives.

Still, I think the biggest problem is you and your wife are experiencing a communication and marital breakdown. If the kids weren’t in the picture, I’ve got a feeling the same problems would exist. The difference is they would manifest themselves in other ways.

Obviously, your wife needs to stop being so impulsive where the kids are concerned. Try sitting down with her and gently explaining your feelings. Let your wife know you love her and how generous she is, but you’re worried this is having a negative impact on your children.

Maybe you could try to establish some guidelines as to when really nice gifts are appropriate, too. There’s a middle ground you can reach, but it’s going to take some time and effort. Most of all, it means the two of you are going to have to communicate and work together for the good of your kids.
