Professional development for D. 58 mathematics approved Teachers needed significant professional development, support for Common Core Bugle Staff The District 58 Board of Education approved a $48,000 contract with Metro Chicago Math Initiative to provide teachers with additional math professional development.

Board members, along with the district’s math committee, sought out the service after receiving input and requests from teachers and administrators.

During the 2015-16 school year, the math committee reviewed the

district’s mathematics curriculum and instruction, and concluded that “teachers needed significant professional development and support for implementation of mathematics instruction aligned to Common Core State Standards.”

Village appoints new mayor pro tem Commissioner White appointed to position following David Olsen’s resignation

With the resignation of former commissioner, now state representative David Olsen, it is time for the Downers Grove village council to choose a new mayor pro tem.

Olsen served as mayor pro tem, which has responsibilities in leading the village council when Mayor Martin Tully is absent.

Commissioner Bill White was appointed mayor pro tem and deputy liquor commissioner until the next village council election in 2017.

“I don’t know if it’s a blessing

or a curse, but you’re now mayor pro tem,” Mayor Tully joked, as he congratulated White.

Homeowners continue to seek historic recognition

The Downers Grove Village Council held a first reading for two properties that are seeking historic landmark designation.

The first property is a house and barn at 4502 Prince St. According to board documents, the house was constructed in 1896, and thus

meets the 50 year age requirement for the historic preservation ordinance.

The property also has many features typical of the Queen Anne Style, with an ornamental porch with spindlework and other decorative detailing.

“I’m very excited to see the high level of interest in our community,” Mayor Tully said, adding that he appreciates when residents

come forward looking for historic landmark designation.

The second property is at 1130 Franklin St. According to board documents, this house is also a Queen Anne style with a basement, and was constructed in 1892.

The house was originally built by Emerson Foote, a business partner in E.H. Prince and Company.

The company was responsible for platting the E.H. Prince and Company subdivision in 1890 and has played a significant role in the growth of the village.

Downers Grove resident wins‘$500 a Week for Life’ Downers Grove resident Steven Sousanes scratched an Illinois Lottery $500 A Week For Life instant ticket and won a top prize of $500 a week for life.

Sousanes, 50, has lived in Downers Grove for 22 years. He was sitting at his desk at home when he scratched his ticket. Thinking that he must have read the ticket

incorrectly, he immediately went back to the 7-Eleven where he bought it and asked the clerk to confirm the win.

“I freaked out! I was so happy I started shouting and running around the store!”

Despite some resident opposition at the Aug. 2 village council meeting, the council approved a redevelopment and sales tax agreement with 1815 Ogden, LLC. Packey Webb Ford will be relocating to the new property at 1815 Ogden. The dealership will also continue to operate a dealership at its current site at Ogden and Finley.

The property has sat

vacant for years, and several commissioners expressed gratitude at the Aug. 2 meeting for the opportunity that the dealership will provide for the village.

The council also approved a rezoning and a special use permit for this property, as well as an ordinance authorizing construction.

Commissioner William Waldack said this project has not been a fast process and that the property has sat vacant.

“I’m confident that this project will be a plus for our community.”

Tully said that it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a car dealership go into this property.

“It has been a part of this village’s goal to develop this parcel,” he said.

Despite multiple rulings from Illinois State Board of Elections, publications continue to print

By Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant State Senator 49th Senate District Many residents have noticed two new publications – the Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal – arriving at their doorstep recently.

Unbeknownst to readers, these papers are actually political mailings, intentionally designed to look like weekly newspapers and part of a new network of Illinois publications funded by the Liberty Principles PAC – a conservative political group allowed unlimited contributions and expenditures under

The Illinois Press Association, which represents more than 450 papers throughout the state, recently warned readers about the “legitimacy, integrity and intent” of these publications, and the Illinois State Board of Elections found this network to be in violation of the Campaign Disclosure Act for not including the required “paid for” attributions and colluding with candidates, in violation of Illinois law.

Despite multiple Board rulings, the

publications continue to print and candidates, such as my opponent, continue to conduct interviews.

This is not about the First Amendment – I undoubtedly respect one’s right to free speech. This is about a super PAC going to extreme lengths to mislead readers in order to push a political agenda.

It’s unacceptable if these papers and its participants, such as my opponent, continue to break the law. Campaign finance and ethics laws were put in place to increase transparency and decrease undue influence by wealthy special interest groups. Residents deserve better.

In the spirit of running an ethical and legally compliant campaign, I ask all candidates to sever any communications with the Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal because voters deserve integrity with their news, not political propaganda masquerading as news.

‘cHicaGo touGH’ Former Raider Morrison helping bring a new attitude to Colts D

ANDERSON, IN – In the Birmingham Bowl, the final game of his junior year at the University of Florida, former Bolingbrook High School standout Antonio Morrison tore multiple ligaments in his left knee - putting his football career in jeopardy.

Morrison had a pair of surgeries less than two months apart and defied all odds by returning to full strength before the start of his senior season and recording 103 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, one pass defended and one forced fumble.

With the 103 stops, Morrison became the first Florida player to record back-to-back 100-tackle seasons since Ed Robinson in 199293. He was Named a Butkus Award semifinalist and was a unanimous first team All-SEC selection his senior year.

While his play earned him an invitation to the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis, an infection forced him to withdraw from the combine and go on a six-week regiment of antibiotics – again negatively impacting the future of his career.

through all of the adversity and along the way caught the attention of professional team, including the Indianapolis Colts, who on April 30, made the Bellwood, IL native the first Raider ever drafted into the National Football League.

“Those things were unfortunate, but I fought through them,” Morrison said. “They weren’t anything that brought me down. I have worked for it and I have earned this. I have dreamed of this since I was a kid and it is great to be here, but I have bigger dreams and goals, so I have to keep working.”

Morrison was selected in the 4th round, the 125th selection overall.

“This kid is pure Chicago tough,” Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson said in a press conference on draft day. “He is a tough hombre and he plays that way. He plays lights out.”

Colts head coach also raved about Morrison in that same press conference.

“When we talk about getting mindset guys and guys that love to play this game and guys that play with great passion and great energy, the great defensive players that we’ve been fortunate to be around,

morrison | from page 7 this guy is special,” Pagano said. The guy is a great competitor. You just put the tape on and after a couple plays it’s like, ‘Wow.’ He’s a wow guy and he popped on the tape.”

Morrison missed offseason workouts with a hamstring injury, but has been working daily to learn the system since the opening of training camp.

“I don’t have any selfish goals. I just love football and I love winning, so whatever it takes for me to keep doing those two things, I am going to do.”

In doing that, Morrison is working his way up the depth chart and turning heads along the way.

Morrison will look to help fill a void left at the inside linebacker position created when veteran Jerrell Freeman signed with the

Chicago Bears in the offseason.

“We lost Freeman as the inside linebacker, but beyond that, we really like Morrison (and) some of our young guys,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said recently in a press conference.

Morrison has also earned the praises of first year Colts defensive coordinator Ted Monachino.

“What we have seen out of him on the field is exactly what we saw out of him on college tape.

You see tough and you see rugged and you see a guy that loves the game,” Monachino said. “The best thing that we have learned about Antonio since he has been in camp is that he is such a football smart kid. He gets it. He understands ball, he understands run fits. He understands where the weaknesses are on certain calls and knows how to play to those things. Antonio has been a pleasant surprise. We knew he was going to be tough and we

knew he would be a downhill run stopper, but we are getting more and more familiar with him and what he can handle and we are putting more and more on his plate every day.”

Morrison said it is with the help of his coaches and veteran players that have helped him grow so fast as a professional.

“I just play ball and try and do the right things and do what I am coached,” he said. “We have a great staff, a great group of vets on this team – great teachers. There are vets that have welcomed us in as rookies and coaches are teaching us things and everyone is united here and things are going great for this team.”

Being drafted by the Colts brings Morrison back to the Midwest for third phase of his career after spending the last four years down south in Gainesville.

“My parents like it because they are close and they can come to a lot of home games,” he said. “I really didn’t care where I played ball at. It is football and at the end of that day, that is what I love to do.”

Morrison is not the only former area standout turning heads in Colts camp, as he is in the same rookie class with former Joliet Catholic Academy and University of Illinois running back Josh Ferguson.

“We used to do the power lifting things against each other back in the day,” Morrison said. “We never played against Joliet Catholic, but I saw him around a lot and it is cool to see a guy that we used to compete in high school a little bit.”

Morrison’s career began Saturday in the Colts first preseason game at Buffalo where he posted three solo tackles.

The regular season will begin Sept. 11 at home against Detroit.

Morrison will have the chance to travel to London Oct. 2 when the Colts face off against Jacksonville.

He will face his hometown Bears in Indianapolis Oct. 9.

Public vs. Private debate continues into new season The public vs. private debate has ramped up in recent years and for good reason.

Private schools have dominated some sports in recent years, which have left many people in public schools upset with the uneven playing field since private schools can “recruit” and can get athletes from all over an area, while public high schools aren’t (supposed) to recruit and students are within a boundary.

The numbers for some sports prove the grumblings as valid, none more so than girls volleyball.

The past five years a private school has won titles at BOTH the Class 3A and 4A level, with the Class 2A champion also coming from a private school three times in those five years. Private vs. private state final matches have also taken place at all three levels at least once during that time.

The only reason why that doesn’t happen more often is the IHSA tries to mask the private school domination by making the schools play each other before the state finals, and even before state at times.

The last non private champion in Class 4A was in 2010, while in 3A you have to go back to 2007! Does this sound like a level playing field to you? Of course not!

While the IHSA’s new system has successful programs move up in classes, all that will do is keep the lower classes private free.

Meanwhile, it gets harder and harder for a public school to win in 4A with Mother McAuley, Benet and St. Francis all in 4A now (even though the IHSA made sure only one could get to state).

Benet’s back-to-back state titles in Class 4A girls basketball may be also starting a trend as now private schools have won three of the past four state titles.

For the boys, football is always the topic of discussion when it comes to this debate, and for good reason.

Last year four of the top six classes have winners from private schools, with three out of the top four classes the previous two years having private school champs. Dating back to at least 2009, at least half of the champions in Class 5A-Class 8A have been private schools each year.

During that stretch, Montini has won seven straight championships.

a title. The way the system is set up, there will likely always be a private school powerhouse in Class 5A as well.

Another recent trend has been found in baseball. The past four Class 4A state champions have

been private school teams with Providence winning the past three titles.

All of these private schools play in conferences with other private schools. You don’t see Benet in the same conference as the Naperville schools or Providence with the Lincoln-Ways. That is because they are paired with teams that have the same rules as them, which makes sense. Sure, there are a variety of schools that notoriously struggle in sports as private schools, but they wouldn’t do much better in public school conferences.

So, if private schools are separate

in conference play, why should they be competing with public schools in the playoffs? This makes little to no sense to me. A school like Providence can take some of the top players from the Lincoln-Way school district legally and turn around and knock a Lincoln-Way school out of the playoffs with the benefit of having the top players.

No wonder why some of these public schools have been recruiting. It surely isn’t right, but they know that is the only way to compete in some of these sports.

Row home construction underway at Seven Bridges in Woodridge Development to offer 3-story row homes with mix of 3- and 4-bedroom units Construction began last week on an 80-unit row home development in Woodridge’s Seven Bridges development.

Uptown at Seven Bridges, located at Mulligan Drive and Main Street, is the final phase of Main Street at Seven Bridges – a multipurpose development that includes a mix of retail, office, restaurants and residential uses.

Pulte Homes Corporation broke ground on the project Aug. 11. Representatives from Pulte, along with officials from the village of Woodridge and members of the Seven Bridges business community, attended the ceremony.

“The groundbreaking marks a significant milestone for the development, which was originally envisioned to advance village goals to diversify the tax base, provide a variety of quality housing options, and improve

the quality of life for Woodridge residents,” Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham said. “As the final major phase of the development is completed, Woodridge can be proud of what has been accomplished here.”

Uptown at Seven Bridges will offer three-story row homes with a mix of three and four-bedroom units ranging in size from 1,700 to 2,200 square feet. Starting in the low $300s, the community is expected to open for sales in early 2017.

“We are very excited about bringing a great community to the village of Woodridge,” said Maria Wilhelm, vice president of sales for Pulte Homes in Illinois.

“This townhome community is in a perfect location for homebuyers who want the urban conveniences in a suburban setting.”

Wilhelm added that the

development is in close proximity to “employment and transportation” options, as well as within walking distance to various retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment venues.

“We expect great success from this community and encourage buyers to take a look today as these homes will go quickly,” she said.

As a condition of the approval, Pulte Homes will contribute approximately $100,000 to enhance the overall Seven Bridges business community. Those enhancements would pedestrian amenities, wayfinding signage, marketing and infrastructure improvements to support special events, according to the village.

Along with Uptown at Seven Bridges, Gateway Commercial Partners received preliminary approvals to begin developing up to three commercial buildings along Main Street.

Upon completion of all commercial development, Seven Bridges will have approximately 465,000 square feet of office, retail, recreation and restaurant space, according to the village.

Imagine for a moment that you’re driving, and you feel good. The radio is playing a catchy song, your favorite drink is sitting right next to you and the road ahead is clear.

Suddenly, you see a car pull up next to you, driving aggressively.

The driver rides the car in front of him, then begins eyeing your lane.

Without warning, he lurches ahead of you, just a few feet separating your cars. You are forced to hit the brakes, and the Zen mood is gone in an instant.

You honk your horn, ride his tail for the next half-mile, and when he looks into his rearview mirror, you let him know who’s No. 1.

Ellis labels the activating event, in this case the other driver, as the A in the formula. He calls your reaction (honking, cursing and tailgating) the consequence, or C. We tend to assume that the consequence is a direct result of the event, that A causes C. However, there is a critical piece in between A and C, which is a B, our beliefs.

It turns out that not everyone reacts the same way to this situation. The difference is in the way we think about the event.

If we say “He has no right; I’ll show him,” we are setting ourselves up for an extreme emotional and behavioral consequence that could end in more harm. On the other hand, if we replace that old thought with a message like “It’s not worth it.

Let it go,” our response becomes healthier, which is good for our own sanity, as well as everyone on the road.

In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected from one another and to grow discouraged by the struggles we see daily, there is still a way to spread positivity, or at least to avoid a potentially painful negative reaction. Either way, it’s an investment that pays an unbeatable rate of interest.

Annual community garage sale draws bargain hunters Community garage sale is put on yearly by village and the Westmont Special Events Corporation

This past weekend marked another successful community garage sale for the village of Westmont.

Residents held individual garage sales Aug. 12 and 13, attracting buyers from surrounding areas and giving homeowners the opportunity to clear out some unwanted clutter.

The community garage sale is put on yearly by the village and the Westmont Special Events Corporation. Individuals who hold a garage sale during the approved dates and time do not have to obtain a garage sale permit.

A variety of goods, including furniture, clothing, electronics, toys, collectibles, holiday trinkets and sports gear could be found throughout the two-day event.

Patty Christiansen is one seller who got in on the action. She said she is moving soon and used the opportunity to sell some things she no longer needed, including plenty of clothing from the time she spent working at Bloomingdale’s.

Christiansen was unaware of Westmont’s annual event, but was grateful for the foot traffic it brought to her garage sale. She noticed all the garage sales in the community and thought she had just picked a good day.

“Everybody was saying, ‘I came from Westmont’ and they saw our signs,” Christiansen said, who was happy to benefit from the foot traffic brought in by the event.

More than 100 individuals participate in the popular annual event, according to the village of Westmont.

“The community garage sale is a great chance for people to find some bargains, and at the same time, prevent items that still have value from being thrown away and sent to a landfill,” he said.
