David Olsen sworn in as 81st District representative Will server remainder of former Rep. Ron Sandack’s unexpired term

The 81st Legislative House District has a new representative, following former Rep. Ron Sandack’s sudden resignation last month.

David Olsen, of Downers Grove, was sworn in Aug. 3 at Downers Grove South High School. Associate Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court administered the oath of office, and Olsen’s grandmother held the Bible on which he took the oath.

Olsen also served as a commissioner on the Downers Grove Village Council, but resigned from that position in order to take on his new responsibilities as representative. However, Olsen will continue to serve as a trustee and board vice chairman on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees.

Olsen, 27, was selected to

fulfill Sandack’s unexpired term.

Several of his colleagues from the Illinois Senate and House were at the ceremony to support Olsen and welcome him to the state legislature.

Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, and House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, spoke at the ceremony and offered the new member of the Republican caucus in Springfield their best.

“I am pleased to welcome David Olsen to the Illinois General Assembly,” Durkin said. “David has done a terrific job at the local level as a member of the Downers Grove Village Council, and most recently, as vice chairman on the College of DuPage Board.”

Durkin added that Olsen is intelligent, professional and well liked.

“He has proven to be a strong leader and public servant. I know he will do a great job for constituents as a State Representative.”

Olsen is a long-time resident

of Downers Grove, and himself attended Downers Grove South High School. He later attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned degrees in Finance and Management.

While Olsen did not detail many of his policies during his brief speech, he did mention his passion for education.

“Education is the foundation of opportunity for all Illinoisans, and I intend to fight for local control and full funding for our vitallyimportant schools.”

Olsen has jumped right into his role as representative, hosting a “Shredding & Sharing” event on Aug. 6, his third full day in office. Olsen partnered with AT&T and Sharing connections for the document shredding and collection drive event.

In November, Olsen will face off against fellow Downers Grove village council commissioner Greg Hose, who will run as the Democratic party’s candidate for representative.

District names next superintendent Woodridge School District 68 selected assistant superintendent of personnel and administrative services Patrick Broncato as the next superintendent, beginning July 2017.

The board of education unanimously approved the appointment at its July 25 meeting.

Current Superintendent Cathy Skinner is set to retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year, ending a 13-year career with District 68.

“We are extremely happy to have such a highly qualified educational leader as the next superintendent of Woodridge School District 68,” Board President Tom Ruggio said. “Pleased with the current direction of the district, the board of education had started the search internally and, after meeting with Mr. Broncato, knew we had to look no further.”

superintendent for personnel and administrative services with District 68 since July 2011. “I am honored and privileged that the Woodridge Board of Education has selected me to replace Dr. Skinner when she retires,” Broncato said. “The Woodridge Board of Education is truly a dynamic board, and I am excited to be part of such an outstanding district. I look forward to helping the district take the next steps to ensure that every student can achieve his or her dreams.”

Before joining the district, he was the chief legal officer with School District U-46 in Elgin for eight years. Prior to that, he was in private practice with the school law firm of Scariano, Himes and Petrarca, Chtd. in Chicago.

Broncato is currently a Doctor of Education candidate at Western Illinois University. He holds a Juris Doctorate from The John Marshall Law School and obtained a Bachelor of Science in human resources management from Northern Illinois University.

“Pat has developed a strong working relationship with the Board, administration and staff over the past five years as assistant superintendent for personnel and administrative services, and he will continue to move our district forward in the years to come,” said Ruggio. Broncato lives in Wheaton with his wife and three children.

Ford dealership looks to relocate to new Downers Grove location Village council considers redevelopment, taxrebate agreements

A new car dealership may be coming to Downers Grove, with commissioners showing support for the proposed development during a discussion at the Aug. 2 village council meeting.

The Downers Grove Village Council heard the first read of an ordinance that would approve a redevelopment and tax sales rebate agreement between the village and 1815 Ogden LLC. The property would also need to be rezoned, as well as require a special use permit and authorization, before construction of the dealership could begin.

According to board

documents, Packey Webb Ford currently operates a dealership located at Ogden and Finley.

However, the existing facility does not comply with Ford Motor Company requirements, including insufficient parking for new and used vehicles and too few service bays.

The dealership would like to relocate to a new location at 1815 Ogden Ave., which has been vacant for several decades.

Packey Webb indicated that they would continue to operate another dealership at the current Finley-Ogden facility.

Board documents also state that the redevelopment is projected to generate $7.3 million in net sales tax revenue during the 15-year term of the agreement. The village said it would reimburse the developer up to $5 million from the Ogden TIF Fund, citing “extraordinary redevelopment expenses.”

Community garage sale brings deals to Westmont this weekend Event will be held Aug. 12 and 13 Each year, the Village of Westmont and the Westmont Special Events Corporation organize a communitywide garage sale event, encouraging residents to hold their garage sales during the same weekend to bring out the bargain hunters en masse.

This year’s event will be held Aug. 12 and 13. Garage sales will be held both days between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

No garage sale permit is necessary for this specific event on these dates.

The site used to be a salvage yard and contains lead that must be remediated to standards set by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The property also has a 25-foot elevation change from east to west and must be regraded.

Additionally, the property currently considered a local poor drainage area and must conform to village of Downers Grove stormwater management regulations.

The new automobile dealership building would be 53,759 square feet, and include a showroom, offices, service area, detail area, car wash bay and other spaces. The dealership would include 815 parking spaces.

Commissioner Bob Barnett said he thought it was a fantastic opportunity for the village to help relocate the dealership.

“I’m hard-pressed to find a reason to not move this [project] forward,” he said.

Commissioner William Waldack agreed.

“This area has been on

Mayor Martin Tully reiterated that this is a first reading and the council may not vote on it Aug. 9.

Westmont sets timeline for community branding plan Village to hold workshop meeting Sept. 26 The village of Westmont is moving forward with plans to have a community branding process in place by next spring.

“Community branding has been identified as one of our top strategic plan priorities by our implementation committee,” said Trustee Jim Addington, who is chairing the committee.

“At our recent administration committee meeting, we gave direction to move forward with a community branding process and

timeline with the goal of having a final recommendation by spring 2017.”

As part of that process, the village will hold a community branding workshop meeting Sept.

Here are some tips to help you keep your motivation high while you organize your life.

stArt with A smAll spAce Organize a linen closet, medicine cabinet, or a drawer – a small space that will be fairly quick and easy and give you a sense of accomplishment.

That will give you the confidence and motivation to move on to bigger areas.

I’m talking about scheduling a party, inviting houseguests or holding an important meeting in your office. Maybe fear of what others will think of your clutter will motivate you to stick with your organizing plan.

meAsure your proGress When you have a big goal, like getting an entire room organized, it can be motivating to measure small successes as you slowly progress towards your goal.

When paring down paper piles, for example, weigh your discard bag at the end of each session, with a goal that the bag from each session weighs more than the bag from the prior session. Or count how many bags of trash or donated items you have after each session, or measure how many inches of closet rod space or shelf space you’ve freed up.

Before and after photos can also be a great way of measuring progress.

plAy music you enJoy – whistle while you work Make it a social event by having a friend or organizing professional work alongside you.

Be AccountABle to someone Tell someone about your goal to get organized and ask them to help you stay on track.

Check in with them on your progress on a regular basis, and agree on what they should do if they don’t hear from you – how often should they gently remind you to check in with them?

Wisconsin Dells newer course a gem

Wild Rock Golf Club is a part of the Wilderness Resort located in Wisconsin Dells. Built around the turn of the decade, Wild Rock is a great stop for those looking for a golfing spot to get away from the kids for a few hours.

The course was in pristine shape with few divots and even fewer ball marks on the greens, making the greens putt as true as possible.

Before we even began play we saw two deer on the trip to the first hole and then another one passing us on the first fairway.

Speaking of the first hole, it is a 530-yard par-5 from the blue tees (2nd longest). It plays relatively straight but there is a creek in front of the green, making you lay up instead of trying to reach the green in two.

Next is the second hole at 399 yards with a sharp dogleg right. You can cut off some serious distance by playing right, but if you end up hitting it straight, you can go through the fairway. A 446-yard par-4 is next where a straight shot is needed, followed by an accurate approach to a green surrounded by bunkers and a big ridge on the right side of the green.

The fourth hole is the first par-3 that has water creeping out in front of the green, making it difficult at 186 yards. The fifth hole plays at just 325 yards, but it is uphill to the green with a bunker in the middle of the fairway.

At 551 yards, the sixth hole is

long and difficult, but it does play downhill with some great views in the distance. A bunker awaits in the fairway about 100 yards out and another one is just in front of the green with the pin tucked behind it when we played.

Another long downhill tee shot is next at 460 yards, with another bunker in the middle of the fairway.

A dogleg left par-4 is next to a short green with trouble left of the green.

The front nine finishes with a par3 with a bunker to each side of the green.

The uphill, 541-yard 10th hole is a dogleg right with a bunker yet again in range of your tee shot in the middle of the fairway. There is another bunker guarding the green.

The 11th hole plays 223 yards and is a long par-3 with little trouble in front of the green.

A rock wall guards the 12th hole down the closing portion of the fairway and green, making accuracy more important on the par-4. The 13th hole is a dogleg left, but there is trouble left with a pair of bunkers and thick rough, leading to an uphill and possibly blind approach shot.

The 14th hole is a tight par-4 with a quarry down the left side of the fairway. There is also a fairway bunker about 50 yards in front of the green. the 15th hole is a 166yard par-3 entirely over the quarry, making it a difficult tee shot.

At 415 yards, the 16th hole plays relatively straightforward with some trouble for wayward shots. The 17th hole is a short par-4 that doglegs a little left, but there a plenty of

ADDISON – Liz Johnson came into the stepladder finals of the US Women’s Open Sunday at Stardust Lanes in Addison as the No. 4 seed, meaning she would have to win four straight matches to defend her championship.

Johnson did just that, defeating Shannon Pluhowsky 208-143 in the championship match to win her fifth US Open title.

“The higher the pressure the better I focus,” Johnson said. “I felt more comfortable today and made the shots when I needed to. In these conditions, filling the frames was crucial. This was one of the biggest grinding tournaments I have ever been apart of. That is what makes it a major. To be a part of the category of having five US Opens, it just

hit me.”

In the first round of the stepladder finals Johnson defeated Kelly Kulick, the No. 5 seed, 207-168. In the second round Johnson overcame a foul on the first ball in the 10th frame to top New Hui Fen of Singapore 215-200.

“I think I was more in shock of the foul because I had already thrown my second ball,” Johnson said. “Every other time I was two inches behind the foul line, so I might have just gotten a little fast. I took a deep breath and had to make another good shot.”

To advance to the finals, Johnson defeated Shayna Ng of Singapore in a back-and-forth match, 209-180, overcoming a deficit in the seventh frame.

“When things are going good it is easy to be excited,” Pluhowsky said. “I came out today and the lanes didn’t play similar to how they played all week. You have to take the good with the bad and move on.”

Schaumburg’s Jodi Gawlik missed the TV finals by one spot, finishing in sixth place with an 11,706 grand total, eight pins behind fifth place Kulick.

The Voyager Media coverage area had five locals compete in the Open, but none made the cut. However, Courtney Johnston of Joliet, a Minooka graduate, finished in the money, taking 52nd place with a 4,631 total, claiming $1,450. The top 47

players made the cut.

Megan Szczepanski of Lockport came in 64th place (4,558), Taylor Bailey of Joliet was 87th (4,459), Autumn Lee of Plainfield was 108th (4,323) and Allyson Ware of Lockport was 137th (3,947).

“The fans showed up all week and were excited. The Pro-Am was great. There were a bunch of kids here who were excited about bowling and they are the future of our sport. Chicago is a great bowling city.”

TV Finals

The tournament marked the second time the US Open has been in Chicago in recent years and it was well received.

“It was awesome,” Johnson said. “Chicago is a great bowling town. I’m a partial resident to the Chicago area right now and I’ve bowled in this center many times.

The fans here are awesome. It was a great crowd this afternoon and it was awesome to see. We have so many great female bowlers out there, it is exciting.”

“It was great,” Pluhowsky said.

There is a lot of work to put in for all television broadcasts, but the setup for bowling broadcasts is as difficult as there is in any sport. A broadcast booth and camera are set up behind the bowlers, while bleachers and half walls are put up behind and to the side of the lanes being used.

Additional bleachers are on the other side down the lane and the set of lanes are closed off.

But the light fixtures used throughout the lanes might be the most tedious of all jobs as

rock | from page 7 trouble left and bailing out right is a good idea and will still give you a solid shot at the green.

The closing hole is a par-4 with a long and narrow green.

The hole plays relatively short, but there is trouble with fescue and bunkers for shots that go past the tight green.

There is a wide range of prices for the course. On a weekday afternoon you can play for just $60 at times.

There are also tee times for $88 and special promotions ranging from $95 to $135.

On top of the views and the wildlife, another interesting thing about the course is the combination

of tree-lined fairways and links style golf. There are pot bunkers all over the place and fescue as well, both links-style traits, but there is also trees and forests all over the place, which isn’t known in a links course.

That makes it quite unique.

That, as well as the great shape of the course and the challenges, make this course a good course to play when traveling to the Wisconsin Dells area.

You probably want to book early though as tee times in the summer fill up fast.

Be sure to try to keep your ball on the same side as the flag though on the green as the slopes on many of the greens can lead to tricky putts.

25-plus lights illuminate the TV pair. If you have ever been in a bowling alley before, you know how dark they typically are, so these are needed to keep the light for TV. With the difficult and costly setup, the PWBA has decided to stage multiple TV finals at one location. After the conclusion of the US Open, there were three more TV finals broadcasted for tape delay on CBS Sports the rest of the month.

Tournament finals from Lexington, Kentucky, Rochester, New York and Seminole, Florida were all finished in Addison after the qualifying earlier in the summer at the host cities. It makes it for a long day for the broadcasters and some bowlers who are in multiple TV finals, but it makes sense for the production

crews and relatively tight budgets for bowling.

THE GRIND The US Women’s Open consists of 24 games of initial qualifying over three days, eight more games for the first qualifiers round and eight games of the final 24 qualifiers the fourth day and 16 more games for the final 24 qualifiers the fifth day leading up to the top five qualifiers for the stepladder finals. The grind of the tournament makes it unique and challenging.

“When you have the tougher shots and the larger amount of games, it does separate the bowlers and it isn’t just physically, it is mentally challenging,” Johnson said. “I like the marathons over the sprints. I feel it is my strong suit.”

Thick lawns may provide a breeding ground for snow mold, so homeowners whose lawns have a history of developing snow mold may benefit from mowing their lawns into the fall.

Village to vote on contract for 2016 Recycling Extravaganza Vendor for last year’s event notified village of additional fees, village opened bidding

Downers Grove village staff recommended awarding Elgin Recycling a $17,600 contract to perform services during the upcoming Recycling Extravaganza event.

The village of Downers Grove has scheduled the annual event for Sept.

10. If the contract is approved, Elgin

Recycling would be responsible for recycling electronic materials collected during the event.

Recycling Extravaganza allows participants to drop off recyclable materials at the event. There are no restrictions on residence and items collected include electronics, fire extinguishers, batteries, flags, furniture and scrap metal.

During the 2015 event, 84,126 pounds of electronics were collected. Last year, the event cost

the village about $4,900, and $5,000 is budgeted for the event in the general fund.

Last year’s vendor, New Life Electronics Recycling, notified the village that new charges for recycling services would be added this year. In response, the village put the contract up for bid.

The Downers Grove Village Council considered the contract at its Aug. 2 meeting, and the item will appear on the Aug. 9 active agenda.

The village does offer alternative electronics recycling programs for residents through Downers Grove Township.

Tips to get kids more excited about eating right Combatting obesity can start in the kitchen, where parents can set a positive example Childhood obesity is reaching record heights across the globe.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 41 million children were obese or overweight as of 2014.

Obesity is an all-too-familiar problem for parents, many of whom are aware of the long-term threat that childhood obesity poses to their sons and daughters. According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched

by First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama that’s dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity, obese kids are more likely to become obese as adults than youngsters who maintain healthy weights throughout their childhoods. In addition, obese children may be at greater risk for cardiovascular diseases such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Combatting obesity can start in the kitchen, where parents can set a positive example by making sure the whole family eats healthy.

Parents know that encouraging youngsters to forgo fatty foods in favor of healthier fare is not always so easy. But the following tips can help get kids excited about eating healthy, which can help them maintain healthy weights and lower their risk of various ailments.

Invite kids into the kitchen Kids might be more excited about healthy foods when they play a role in preparing the meals they eat. People who cook often cite the pride they feel when they cook meals that they and their families or guests enjoy. Kids feel the same sense of pride and accomplishment when preparing meals, and that pride may increase the likelihood

that they will eat the entire meal, including vegetables and other healthy foods, without complaint.

Reinvent foods kids don’t like Rare is the child who embraces vegetables. But parents can experiment with vegetables in ways that might make them more attractive to youngsters.

For example, rather than serving carrots without sauce or seasoning, serve them with a bowl of hummus that kids can dip their carrots into to add some flavor. Available in various flavors, hummus is a healthy dip that’s high in protein and various vitamins and minerals.

Hummus can be high in fat, but that should not discourage parents too much, as much of the fat found in hummus is unsaturated fat that won’t negatively affect kids’ hearts.

If hummus does not do the trick, parents can look for other healthy dips, such as those with a Greek yogurt base, that can add flavor to veggies without compromising their nutritional value.

Solicit kids’ input regarding the menu Much like kids might be more excited about eating meals they prepare, they may also be more likely to embrace healthy diets when their parents solicit their input regarding the weekly meal menu. If kids ask for unhealthy fare like hamburgers or macaroni and cheese, compromise by preparing healthier alternatives, such turkey burgers or whole grain pasta with parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.

Explain your reasons for preparing healthier alternatives. In addition, don’t be afraid to veer off course

every so often and let kids choose a meal that’s not as nutritious as you would like. Straying from healthy fare is only problematic if it becomes routine. But periodic indulgences in pizza and other less nutritional fare should not affect kids’ long-term health.

Make experimenting fun Parents who love trying new things in the kitchen or when dining out can encourage the same spirit of experimentation in their children. Kids who are focused and enthusiastic about trying new foods may not think twice about how the new foods they’re trying are healthy.

Make experimenting with new foods a family affair by alternating who gets to choose the restaurant when ordering takeout or the type of cuisine to cook on nights when the family experiments in the kitchen. Once the choice has been made, choose healthy items and share dishes so kids can try various healthy foods in a single meal.

Pistachios Many people might read the labels of pistachios and be turned off by the fat content. But pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in protein, and a couple dozen pistachios may only amount to about 95 calories.

Grapes Grapes might not be as popular as potato chips or other widely available snacks, but they are great sources of vitamin K and are loaded with antioxidants.

Grapes are loaded with water, making them a filling snack that can help men and women avoid dehydration.
