Benedictine accepted into NCAA D-II Lisle-based university will begin play in Division-II in 2019

The NCAA Division II Membership Committee announced July 13, 2018 that Benedictine University has been granted access to the NCAA Division II membership process, thus paving the way for the Eagles to become the 16th member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) prior to the 2019-20 academic year.

“In January of 2017 we formed a committee on campus to review the process of making a decision from Benedictine jumping from [Division] three to [Division] two,” Benedictine Athletics Director Mark McHorney said. “At the end of the meeting we wanted to present the situation to the board of trustees, and after it reached the president we showed all of our findings.”

A multiyear venture, the NCAA Division II membership process prepares applying institutions for a successful transition. The provisional process for Benedictine is a minimum of three years that includes opportunities for education, assessment and growth, as well as a chance to fully integrate the Division II philosophy, strategic positioning platform and best practices to be a successful Division II institution.

“The GLVC Council of Presidents is pleased to welcome Benedictine University as our next member, following our unanimous endorsement of the recommendation from the league’s faculty athletic representatives last fall,” Dr. Rob Manuel, University of Indianapolis President and Chair of the GLVC Council of Presidents said in a press release.

During interim year one of the membership process (2018-19), Benedictine will still compete in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC), and the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC).

Due to acceptance into the Division II membership process, Benedictine will not be eligible to compete in NCAA DIII Championships, however the Eagles are eligible to win regular-season league titles and can also have student-athletes earn All-Conference honors.

During this time, Benedictine will begin implementing Division II policies and procedures, but will not offer student-athletes any ath-

letic scholarships.

“We want to distinguish Benedictine as a first class, Catholic and liberal arts program that is one of the best here in the Midwest,” McHorney said. “We know that the move to Division-II will expand our recruiting markets athletically and this change puts our name in these markets such as Indianapolis, St. Louis and Chicagoland much differently then if we were in Division-III.” After successful completion of the third and final provisional year of the transition (2020-21), Benedictine will become active members of NCAA Division II, enabling its teams and student-athletes the ability to compete in all GLVC and NCAA Championships.

Benedictine currently has 19 sports, 17 of which are offered by the GLVC, including all seven of the league’s core sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and volleyball.

The Eagles will also compete under the GLVC banner in men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

They do not have four GLVC sports, including men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis. The GLVC also does not sponsor two additional Benedictine sports in men’s volleyball and women’s lacrosse, although the league is hopeful to begin sponsoring the latter in the near future.

“For us, there is now just five schools in the state of Illinois with a Division-II program which makes this a big deal,” McHorney said. “There’s just an incredible amount of opportunity for our university with this move, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Man Sentenced to 21 Years for Gas Station Robbery Tyrone Hammond held up station at gun point last summer DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that a Willowbrook man has entered a plea of guilty to holding up a Shell gas station last summer. Tyrone Hammond, 26, (d.o.b.

4/25/1992) of 10S710 Lilac Lane, appeared in court this afternoon where he entered a guilty plea to one count of Armed Robbery with

a Firearm (Class X Felony) in front of Judge Robert Miller. On August 1, 2017, Hammond appeared in Bond Court where bond was set at $500,000 with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody since that time.

The charges stem from allegations that on July 14, 2017, at approximately 9:09 p.m., Hammond

entered the Shell gas station located at 8226 Cass Avenue in Darien.

Once inside the store, Hammond brought cookies to the clerk working at the cash register to purchase. Once the clerk opened the drawer to the register, Hammond pulled out a gun, pointed it at the clerk and shouted “everything, everything” at the clerk. The clerk gave Hammond approximately $450 from the register. Following the robbery, Hammond fled the scene on foot. The Darien Police

Department conducted an investigation into the robbery in which Hammond was identified as a suspect and subsequently taken into custody.

“I would like to commend The Darien Police Department for their outstanding job in identifying Mr. Hammond as a suspect in this case and for his ultimate apprehension,” Berlin said. “Threatening a man at gunpoint who is trying to make an honest living will not be tolerated and anyone who engages

in this type of brazen behavior will face significant consequences, as Mr. Hammond learned this afternoon. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Robert Willis and Nicole Wilkes English for their efforts in building a strong case against Mr. Hammond which led to today’s guilty plea.”

Hammond will receive credit for the 358 days he has already served in custody. He will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

With the way modern society has become prone to violence and brutality, there is never enough awareness and precaution that can be taken place in order to make things safer.

Last week, Woodridge held another annual community roll call in order to help inform the neighborhood watch group and further provide other questions about vandalism, graffiti and crime prevention.

Management analyst Jim Hoff who has helped create the frequent community police department roll calls, has tried to focus on the people and doing whatever they can to try and improve ever year to be a safer region.

“This all started a few years ago and we really just wanted to connect with people to emphasize the partnership that we have had and trying to continue to build with the community,” Hoff said.

“This year has been different because we have actually been partnering with specific people in the neighborhoods who are called championships that organize and help people to come to their roll call within their neighborhood.”

Hoff also sees this as a chance for locals to be more familiarized with local law enforcement.

“It’s just a wonderful way for the residents to connect with the officers that serve the community,” Hoff said. “It’s an easy way to meet the officers and for the officers to be open about what’s going on in the neighborhood.”

Local Woodridge Chief of Police Officer Bryan Cunningham has been a police officer for more than 30 years and said that this meeting gives people a chance that doesn’t usually happen by getting to ask questions and listen to officers thoughts and concerns about the area they are patrolling.

Building a rapport with the officers leads to more trust, which helps with camaraderie in the neighborhoods so the residents can have a better understanding what is happening in their vicinity.

“The community connections are really strong here which helps

people to know what’s going on more,” Cunningham said. “The people seem to actually enjoy having the police around which is nice, and this community roll call that we started a couple years ago draws a lot of people so they see [police officers] in a different light.”

Having the community roll call has helped ensure more safety for the residents, and there is not one, but five meetings every year to help educate natives about what is happening.

Not only did locals get to speak with police officers, ask questions and voice their concerns, but local storm chaser Dan Murray was in attendance to provide information about what to do in the case of an emergency with one of these catastrophic storms.

Murray said the helpful details about what to do in case of thunderstorms, lightning and tornadoes really puts residents in more of a calm state of mind.

“Us as storm chasers really want to help and improve on giving people a better warning for when these storms or horrific weather hits,” Murray said. “Getting people safe by warning them about the storm or giving them more opportunity to get to a shelter is [the most important thing].”

DuPage County residents have the opportunity to share important feedback with County Board members and staff by completing DuPage’s annual budget survey. The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FYPRHJ6.

Each year, the DuPage County Board asks the residents to provide their thoughts pertaining to County programs and spending priorities. The information helps shape the next year’s budget, determining spending levels for the County’s various programs.

“This is not our budget; it is the taxpayers’ budget. We hope they take ownership and give the Board feedback on their spending priorities for 2019,” said Finance Committee Chairman Bob Larsen.

The survey coincides with the regular budget process as DuPage officials determine spending levels for Fiscal Year 2019, which begins on Dec. 1, 2018.

Gov. Rauner Signs House Bill 5123 in DuPage County Governor Bruce Rauner joined Chairman Dan Cronin, County Clerk Paul Hinds, members of the County Board, and local lawmakers as he signed House Bill 5123 into law on Monday.

House Bill 5123 provides the DuPage County Board with the authority to dissolve the DuPage County Election Commission and fold its duties into the County Clerk’s Office.

“DuPage County has spent several years working toward this consolidation. With the support of voters and help from our DuPage legislators, we have advanced another good government reform that will save taxpayers money. Together with Gov. Rauner, we are setting the standard of a responsible, effective government, one that adapts and innovates the delivery of its services and

works on behalf of the people it serves,” said Chairman Dan Cronin.

A majority of DuPage County voters approved a referendum question on the consolidation in March, and the General Assembly unanimously approved the bill this spring. The law becomes effective Jan. 1, 2019.

The County Board will consider an ordinance in January officially dissolving the Election Commission. Through this merger, the County expects to save taxpayers $300,000 annually.

By summer 2019, DuPage County will have dissolved seven units of local government under its Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative. One tenet of the ACT Initiative is consolidating local units of government when appropriate.

Lincoln the first president to make use of electronic mass media

BY STEVE TARTER Of the Journal Star of Peoria FDR used the radio, JFK scored on TV and Donald Trump expouses on Twitter. But the first president to make effective use of electronic communications was Abraham Lincoln.

His use of the telegraph, a tool used extensively during the Civil War, was one of the things that made Lincoln a unique communicator in tumultuous times.

“Two things set Lincoln apart in terms of his relationship with, and mastery of, the press,” said Harold Holzer, author of “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” published in 2015. “His language was simple and direct enough to make press reprints of his speeches especially compelling.

Second, he courted journalists from the beginning of his career.”

Holzer, director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in New York City, added two more things: “(Lincoln) drafted editorials for his Whig and Republican newspapers and owned a newspaper, himself (as did his arch-rival, Stephen A. Douglas),” he said.

The newspaper that Lincoln purchased — in secret — was a pro-Republican, German-language paper published in Springfield just prior to the 1860 presidential election. “State legislators bought and distributed the paper in their districts,” said James Cornelius, curator of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield.

Cornelius said Lincoln’s rise in Illinois politics was marked by a close relationship with the press. “He was often in newspaper offices up and down the state in the 1830s and 1840s. Hanging around a newspaper office was a good place to shoot the breeze — and exchange information. He also wrote a lot that was published anonymously during that time,” he said.

William Herndon, Lincoln’s Springfield law partner, observed Lincoln’s relationship with the press firsthand.

Writing in 1886, he noted: “In common with other politicians, he never overlooked a newspaperman who had it in his power to say a good or bad thing of him. The press of that day was not so powerful an institution as now, but am-

bitious politicians courted the favor of a newspaperman with as much zeal as the same class of men have done in latter days.”

Herndon recalled Lincoln writing to an editor of a small country paper in southern Illinois. “’I have been reading your paper for three or four years and have paid you nothing for it,’ Lincoln wrote. He then encloses $10 and admonishes the editor with innocent complacency: ‘Put it into your pocket, saying nothing further about it,’” he said.

Not long after, Lincoln sent an article “on political matters” to the editor - who declined to publish the piece “because I long ago made it a rule to publish nothing as editorial matter not written by myself.”

“Although the laugh was on Lincoln, he enjoyed the joke heartily,” noted Herndon, recalling Lincoln saying, “That editor has a rather lofty but proper conception of true journalism.”

True journalism wasn’t always on display in the newspapers that reigned in Lincoln’s era. Editors were not shy about taking stands — or taking shots — at the nation’s leaders.

“Let’s just say that the openly, proudly partisan editors of the Lincoln era — Republicans like Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune and Democrats like Manton Marble of the New York World — would not be surprised at all that today’s media outlets, like Fox and MSNBC, display the same kind of doctrinaire leanings, except (the networks of the 21st century) don’t like to admit it,” said Holzer.

“Partisanship was deeply embedded in the American press tradition, from the days of John Adams onward,” he said.

In talking about the “reliability” of newspapers, Lincoln is said to have joked, “They lie and then they re-lie.”

But Lincoln also said, “No man, whether he be private citizen or President of the United States, can successfully carry on a controversy with a great newspaper, and escape destruction unless he owns a newspaper equally great, with a circulation of the same neighborhood.”

Lincoln learned how to deal with a divided press just as he did with a divided country. “Mr. Lincoln understood the power of the press. He well understood the excesses of the media, especially during his presidency. On the whole, he was thick-skinned, but he did object to

falsehoods, calumnies, libel and slander,” noted Lewis Lehrman, author of “Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point.”

“Lincoln’s genius with the press consisted primarily in presenting arguments for the Union cause and emancipation which prevailed over the common prejudices of the day. His fairmindedness, even in the face of vicious press attacks, was apparent to all — in the end, even to his enemies,” Lehrman said.

Holzer suggested that a lifetime of reading, writing and negotiating with newspapers laid the groundwork for what Lincoln was able to do as president: reach the public with letters to the editor spelling out his positions on some of the much-debated issues of the day.

“With his dramatic letters of 1862 and 1863, Lincoln in some ways wrote the big three New York editors out of the equation when it came to molding public opinion,” the historian noted.

Lincoln’s habit of maintaining close ties with members of the press as president didn’t always set well with members of his Cabinet. Writing in his diary in 1864, Navy Secretary Gideon Welles complained: “It is an infirmity of the President that he permits the little news mongers to come around him and be intimate, and in this he is encouraged by (Secretary of State William) Seward, who does the same, and even courts the corrupt and the vicious, which the President does not. He has great inquisitiveness. Likes to hear all the political gossip as much as Seward. But the President is honest, sincere and confiding — traits which are not so prominent in some by whom he is surrounded.”

When it came to using the technology of the day, Lincoln learned about sending messages by wire from Charles Tinker, a telegraph operator he met at the Tazewell House hotel in Pekin in 1857.

By the time he moved to Washington in 1860, Lincoln was well aware of how the telegraph operated and ways he could use it, stated Tom Wheeler, author of “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.” Lincoln not only installed a telegraph office at the White House but used that office as a situation room, allowing the president to communicate with field commanders in the nearest thing to real time that was available in the 1860s, noted Wheeler, adding that Lincoln sent out almost 1,000 telegrams during his time in the executive office.

Plainfield North’s Marcellus Moore was named the 2018 Gatorade Illinois boys track athlete of the year

In May, Plainfield North sophomore Marcellus Moore became the first Tiger to win an individual state track and field state title.

In fact, he won two.

Moore won the 100-meter dash with a state-record time of 10.31 seconds and claimed the title in the 200 with a time of 21.30.

He also anchored the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams that claimed state titles, giving Moore four gold medals in the event.

“At the age of 14 as a freshman when he ran 10.40, no 14-yearold in the history of the world has ever run a faster time,” said North coach Tony Holler. “At sectional he ran a 20.88 in the 200 and I looked that up and

the record for a 15-year old was 20.58 by Usain Bolt. That kind of tells you, this is not just a kid who wins races, it is something special.”

For his accomplishments, he was tabbed as the 2017-18 Gatorade Illinois Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Moore as Illinois’s best high school boys track and field athlete.

“Honestly, I had no idea I was even in the running,” Moore said. “It was really all a big surprise when I found out I was a finalist. I woke up like seven in the morning and saw on Twitter that I was Illinois Gatorade SEE BEST PAGE 6

Cardinal track and field teams honored The North Central College men’s track and field team has been recognized for its combination of athletic and academic excellence in unprecedented fashion, as the Cardinals have been honored as the NCAA Division III National Scholar Team of the Year for the 2018 indoor and outdoor seasons by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

North Central also received one of the USTFCCCA’s major individual academic awards, as distance runner Dhruvil Patel earned Division III Scholar Athlete of the Year accolades for the indoor campaign. Patel, an accounting major, was a two-time CCIW and Division III national champion in 2018. He won the CCIW indoor title at 3,000 meters before placing first in the 5,000 and fourth in the 3,000 at the indoor national championships.

Outdoors, Patel became the seventh man in Division III history to eclipse the 14-minute barrier in the 5,000, finishing in 13:58.27 at the Drake Relays, before win-

North Central accumulated a team grade-point average of 3.10 and finished second at both the indoor and outdoor national championship meets. The Cardinals claimed Scholar Team of the Year honors indoors in 2017 as well, and achieve the distinction outdoors for the first time since the award’s institution in 2007.

North Central is one of 106 men’s Division III teams to qualify for All-Academic Team recognition (minimum team GPA of 3.00), doing so for the fourth consecutive year. The Cardinals are one of six College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) institutions to qualify for team honors, joining Augustana College, Carroll Uni-

versity, Carthage College, Illinois Wesleyan University and Wheaton College.

North Central also had a total of 10 student-athletes honored as All-Academic Individuals. this season. To qualify for the individual All-Academic award, studentathletes must have compiled a grade point average of 3.30 and have competed at either the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships or finish the season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or the top 25 in a relay event.

The Cardinals’ total of 10 honorees ranks as the fourth-highest number of recipients from any NCAA Division III institution. A total of 408 student-athletes from 121 institutions made the list, including 23 from the CCIW. North Central has a trio of three-time honorees in distance runner Zach Hird, sprinter/hurdler Peyton Piron and high jumper Adam Poklop, while Patel, thrower Caleb Lundquist and distance runner Matt Norvell make the list

for the second time and distance runners Argeni Bailon, Al Baldonado and Steve Sismelich and middle-distance runner Brendon Sebastian are first-time honorees.

Hird and Norvell were both honored with selections to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team in June. It was Hird’s second straight such recognition.

Combining the twin secondplace finishes with the Cardinals’ victory at the Division III Cross Country Championships last fall, North Central won the USTFCCCA’s Al Carius Program of the Year Award for the 2017-2018 academic year, recognizing the program with the highest average finish at the three championships, for the fourth time.

• Eight Cardinals received individual All-Academic accolades as well, the second-highest total in the women’s track program’s history.

The Cardinals earn the honor after posting a team grade-point av-

erage of 3.35 for the academic year.

North Central is one of six College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) institutions to be honored, joining Augustana College, Carroll University, Carthage College, Illinois Wesleyan University and Wheaton College.

To be eligible for the award, institutions must be USTFCCCA members and compile a team GPA of 3.10 or better. A total of 185 NCAA Division III women’s programs made the list this season.

The Cardinals’ eight individual honorees include senior Bethany Bachmann, juniors Kyle Draghi and Naomi Yamane, sophomores Dianne Barajas, Ashley Buado and Madelyn Scopp and freshmen Alexis Henz and Kelsey McLaurin. To qualify for the individual honor, athletes must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and either competed in a national championship event or been ranked in the top 35 in an individual event or in the top 25 in a relay event in the final indoor or outdoor rankings.

While it may not get the notoriety nation wide, in Plainfield track and field has been a key story for a long time.

“A few years ago, the four coaches got together and we decided to call Plainfield Tracktown,” Holler said. “In track, we are much more together than we are rivals. You don’t have to hate your opponent to perform well. I think it makes us all better.”

Going back to the Winder brothers racking up pole vault

titles to Kahmari Montgomery winning the sprint triple crown his senior season — and now Moore puts the village on the national radar again.

“Plainfield is really big for track,” Moore said. “For me, it started with Kahmari. I have known him for a long time and always looked up to him and I always wanted to fill his shoes or be better than him.”

Moore, who already bettered Montgomery’s state finals times

in the 100 and 200 will look to add the 400 to his resume and repeat the triple crown — and he has two more years to do it.

“I want to continue to get faster,” he said. “Next year, I know there will be big target on my back and I know there will be some more pressure, but I know I will be OK.” And after North, Moore has higher goals that may not be unattainable.

“I want to get my education paid for, but I also want to make the Olympic team and run for my country someday,” he said.

“It has got to a point where dreams have become reality and more of my goals could be reality and if I just keep working hard, I can achieve those goals.”

Moore is not only an outstanding athlete.

He has maintained a weighted 4.32 GPA in the classroom, is devoted member of his church community. He has also volunteered locally on behalf of Feed My Starving Children, Cradles to Crayons and a youth football program.

“You hear all the time that someone is a better person than

they are an athlete, but he really is a special kid,” Holler said.

“The first word that comes to mind is humble and the second word is competitive and that is such a weird mix. He is such a good guy, but he runs like an assassin. The best sprinters have a reckless confidence about them and that sometimes makes them hard to deal with, but Marcellus breaks that mold. I don’t know if I have ever coached someone who is so universally liked.”

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Moore was able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

Moore selected the Aurora Flyers Track Club as his beneficiary. He also completed a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support in order to attempt to win an extra $10,000 spotlight grant for the Flyers.

“I chose the Aurora Flyer Track Club because the organization has done so much for me and has played a huge role in getting me where I am today,” Moore said. “I wanted to give back.”

Monty DEAR MONTY, If you use your 401(k) they’ll charge you a 10 percent penalty, plus your tax rate. That means you’ll probably lose anywhere from 25 to 50 percent to the government.

I don’t know about you, but I think they already get too much of our money. I love the fact that you want to get rid of your car payment, but I don’t want you to cash out your retirement plan to make it happen. If you can pay off the car in 18 months or less, I’d advise living on a strict, written budget, and throwing as money as possible toward the car debt until it’s out of your life forever.

If it would take longer than 18 months to pay it off, I’d get rid of the car. To do this, you’d have to sell it for as much as you can get, then go to a local credit union for a small loan to cover the difference. If it’s your only car, you’d need to ask for an extra $2,000 to $3,000 to buy a little beater to drive until you can save up and get into something better.

I hate all kinds of debt, Monty. But being $5,000 to $6,000 in the hole is a lot better than having $18,000 in debt hanging over your head!
