Immanuel Youth prepare for mission trip Downers Grove church hosts car wash to raise funds for mission trip

Immanuel Youth for Christ, the high school student ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church, is preparing for its week-long Blue Workcamp. Members of IYC are traveling out of state from July 22 to 29 to repair homes in Frederick, Md. As part of their preparations, they held a carwash fundraiser June 24 at the church, 5211 Carpenter Street, Downers Grove “[The Workcamp will be] an amazing mountaintop experience,” David Thompson, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

“It’s something that everyone enjoys.”

Typically, between 50 and 60 people go on the mission trip, with

the destination changing from year to year.

“All we have to do is raise enough money to get our kids there, and they handle everything else, which just makes it so much easier for us to participate and be part of helping other people,” David said.

The kids are not required to go through any formal training beforehand, David said.

“A lot of the training that we get is there, when we go to the Workcamp,” he said. “Most of the kids, if they’ve never done a Workcamp before, they’ll go there for the first time and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, like, oh, my gosh. I don’t know what to do.’ There are adults in their group that will tell what to do and how to get acclimated; so then the next Workcamp they’re actually really prepared.”

The trip costs each child $300, with the church will picking up the remaining traveling expenses.

“We do a lot of things to raise funds, so we can keep our price down and only charge our kids about 300 bucks a person,” David said.

Cossett Thompson, 16, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, said she is looking forward to the mission trip.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “I’ve been on two [trips] previously, and the cool thing about them is just each one is a really unique experience. Both the times I went, they were similar, but each one had their own unique experiences.”

Cossett said she recognizes there will be hurdles to cross when she leaves for Maryland.

It’s really challenging because last year I was working with a family, and they were like hoarders, so they had a bunch of stuff and they didn’t want to throw anything away,” she said. “It was really emotionally challenging for the family because they were trying to clean up their house because they were going to get evicted, but they couldn’t really let go of stuff. So, it was a challenge to kind of connect with them, but also help them to better their lives.”

Workcamp usually has a powerful way of transforming the lives of others, Cossett said.

“In letting go a lot of their stuff, they weren’t going to be evicted from their house anymore,” she said. “They were really appreciative toward it.”

This year also is the first time the youth ministry from Immanuel Lutheran Church will team up and Trinity Lutheran Church youth ministry in Lisle on the same mission trip.

“It’s humbling to say the least,” David said. “We have very strong outreach with children, and we really want kids to really get what it is we’re trying to accomplish in the world.”

The effort to connect the kids with those from other churches within the Christian faith is important, David said.

“We have a number of other churches that jump in on our bandwagon and add their kids to our group, just because we have organizational structure to handle that,” he said.

David added, “For [our church,] this is a big outreach.”

The camp is organized such that the teens are placed with youth ministries from around the country to work toward repairing homes.

“Our kids are pretty much by themselves within this,” David said.

“It’s our kids with other kids from other denominations of the Christian Faith, and the whole point is to connect with their resident—and their residents could be vastly different as far as economic and racial binds. The whole point is for kids to connect with them as the helper to help them. It’s really amazing to see how that all works out.”

BMO Harris Bank celebrates grand opening Bank opens new branch in Downers Grove at 1201 W. Ogden Avenue

BMO Harris Bank recently hosted a grand opening celebration to welcome the branch to the Village of Downers Grove.

It was all part of the Chamber 630 event aimed at introducing the new business to the community.

“It’s such a special day because you’re really opening something new for [BMO] Harris,” said Roxy Martinez, branch manager of BMO Harris Bank. “This is the first branch south they’ve opened in 10 years, and we’re the only one in the Downers Grove community. So, my excitement is very high for the reason there’s a lot of special things going on today.”

Not only is the BMO Harris Bank brand welcoming a new branch to Downers Grove, but also it is celebrating its bicentennial anniversary in 2017.

“It’s very, very important just because the BMO brand itself has been around for a very long time,” Martinez said. “I’m really excited to bring it to the Downers Grove community, and really let them know what BMO Harris and our history of helping clients and helping them throughout the years has been. So, it worked very well.”

The way in which banks typically operate has evolved over the years, Martinez said.

“It’s changed a lot actually,” she said. “When I first started my first job was a teller. So, I really got to experience what it was like eight years ago. How it is now, it’s a lot of change, but we’ve been changing with customers. The customers have been telling us, ‘You know what, we don’t like to wait as long a time in the teller line to make a deposit.’ So, that’s why we’ve enhanced our ATMs and showed our customers different ways of banking.”

“We adapt with our customers,” Martinez said. “This branch itself is designed to be a smart branch, kind of the different technology our traditional branch has. So, when you walk inside this branch, you don’t have your traditional teller line that we’re accustomed to. So, we’re really adapting to our customers. If you want it fast and they want it right away, that’s kind of what this branch is designed for.”

The branch encourages patrons to put to use the mobile BMO Harris Bank app equipped with mobile cash. It allows people to utilize their cell phone to access a bank account without having one’s card on hand.

“That’s an easier way for you to do banking,” Martinez said.

The defining factor that separates BMO Harris Bank from its competitors rings true for many, Martinez said. “[What] differentiates us from any other competitor is we really treat our customers as a family,” she said. “We really understand what their need is, and then we recommend. We don’t recommend without really getting to know our customer and understanding what their full picture—financial picture—is.”

From Hinsdale and Lisle to Woodridge, BMO Harris Bank already has a number of locations across the area.

The Downers Grove branch is currently extending a special to those interested in joining BMO

Harris Bank, and it gives new customers to the branch $200 if they open up a checking account with direct deposit. That money becomes available within 90 days after the account opening.

Martinez said the timing is equally as great for prospective homebuyers or others interested in applying for loans to meet with the branch’s staff.

“We also have our mortgage team, here, that is part of our BMO Harris Bank Downers Grove smart branch, and they are able to help you, prequalify you, and really get you on your first steps on buying your home,” she said. “It’s your biggest purchase you’ll probably make in your life, so they really do walk you through step-by-step on what you will need and walk you through that [process.]

“If you’re not from the area, you wouldn’t know that just a few years ago this was an old decrepit gas station site,” he said. “Next door, [there] was an old decrepit dry cleaner. I used to take my dry cleaning there years ago. These were both vacant and empty and on one of our main commercial venues, here, in Downers Grove. [It was] not exactly the most attractive site.”

Tully said the Village couldn’t be happier to see the bank breathing new life into the commercial venue.

Abilities Expo celebrates community, puts resources under one roof Abilities Expo has been serving the disability community since 1979

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST On June 23, I spent approximately five hours at the Abilities Expo 2017 Chicago at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center. The Abilities Expo is a three-day celebration of the disability community. This is the event for those of us with disabilities to get resources and tools to assist us in our daily lives.

I had an opportunity to talk with David Krose, the president/CEO of the Abilities Expo and its website abilities. com.

The Abilities Expo has been serving the disability community since 1979 with originally only two events—in Los Angeles and just outside of New York City. This Abilities Expo was started by one man’s frustration that his local wheelchair dealer had a very limited selection. David Krose explained that this small idea to give the disability community the opportunity to go shopping for different kinds of mobility tools was revolutionary for the 1970s.

However, in 2008, David and his business partner, Lew Shomer, acquired the Abilities Expo business without really having any personal connection to the disability community.

Nonetheless, under the amazing leadership of David and Lew, the Abilities Expo has grown over the intervening 9 years to eight cities each year.

By Daniel Smrokowski community can attend, free of charge, any of the Abilities Expos across the country including: northern California, southern California, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Washington D.C., outside of New York City, and for the first time this year, Toronto, Canada.

Today, the Abilities Expo continues to offer admission free of charge, workshops, and an events arena with demonstrations including adaptive sports, wheelchair dancing, and service animals.

The reason for taking over the Abilities Expo business was not a personal one for David Krose. Even though his grandson is on the autism spectrum and David had some friends with disabilities, these circumstances had no impact on him taking ownership of the Abilities Expos. It was merely the fact that he fell in love with the community at these Abilities Expos. David fell in love with what the show was trying to do — bring disability resources under one roof for the disability community to access.

The area of the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center is divided into three halls but Abilities Expo Chicago chose to use all three of them as one big hall. This made the show easily accessible for people with various

disabilities. Typically at most other expos, the workshops would be in meeting rooms in a different part of the hotel.

Unique to the Abilities Expo, the workshops and events arena are all located in the same area as the show room floor.

It’s all “under one roof,” as David says.

The workshops use a service called “CART,” which is like a court reporter who types everything being said by the speaker. For attendees who are hearing impaired or have difficulty understanding but are able to read, then they can read the transcriptions on the big screen next to the speaker.

David explained to me one difference between the New York City and Chicago Abilities Expos. In New York City, Micah Fowler, star of ABC’s Speechless, attended the Abilities Expo in May 2017 in New York City. Approximately six months ago, David had received a phone call from Micah’s mom, Tammy, who had explained Micah was a big fan of the Abilities Expo and had been attending 15 years. In New York City’s Abilities Expo, Micah held a 30-minute question and answer session and spent 90 minutes taking photographs with over 300 attendees.

The Abilities Expo is geared for the entire disability community — both those with visible and invisible disabilities. When David first got involved in the Abilities Expo, he wrongly assumed that this was one big homogeneous community. However, David has come to realize that the disability community has different levels of diagnoses and various needs that people have. Westmont’s Donovan earns POY

It is often difficult for baseball players from small schools to grab the attention of the top colleges and professional scouts.

That was never the case for Joe Donovan.

Sure, his brother Charlie paved a road for Joe, but the younger Donovan hit that road like a runaway 18-wheeler.

As a freshman, he was the starting catcher on a Westmont team that placed fourth in the state in Class 2A and he spent the next three seasons assaulting the Sentinel record books – ending his career holding 20 career records.

He holds the mark for team wins (97), games played (145), runs scored (205), hits (210), extra base hits (99), home runs (36), grand slams (4), RBI (154) and slugging percentage (.891).

This season, Donovan batted .523 with a .628 on base percentage and a 1.171 slugging percentage – all Westmont single season records.

For all of that, Joe Donovan is the first-ever recipient of Voyager Media’s Charlie Donovan Player of the Year Award.

This season is the first year the award is named after Charlie Donovan, who was a three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year and died in November of 2015. It will continue to bear his name going forward.

“This year was a lot of fun,” Joe Donovan said. “I had a part where

I had a mini slump, but I came out of it and just had so much fun.”

Playing for a Class 2A school like Westmont, often times Donovan’s numbers are not looked upon as serious as those by players in Class 3A or 4A. “In my opinion, I can hit at any level,” he said. “We played 4A schools. I hit two doubles and a homer off Mt. Carmel and they are as good as they get. Sometimes it can be even harder to hit at a 1A or 2A level. In the summer, I am pounded with fastballs in the 90s and high 80s and legitimate sliders and breaking balls that you get zoned in to a certain way of hitting and then in the spring there are some kids that can hardly get the ball to the plate on a consistent manner. I would argue that for good hitters, it is almost easier to hit good pitching. That is no excuse for not hitting off bad pitchers, because I think good hitters can hit any pitching.

“I have friends that go to big schools and I get text messages and Snapchats joking around saying that if they were at my school, they would be doing the same thing I am and it gets taxing. As much as I just have to play my game, when the awards come and your peers question the level of competition, it is aggravates me.”

Offense is not the only part of Donovan’s game, as he is one of the top defensive catchers in the state as well.

“From his sophomore year through his senior year, he called almost every single pitch,” Westmont coach DJ Cocks said.

“He shut the running game down.

We hardly had anyone steal on us.

He creates strikes for our pitchers by the way he sets up and frames.

He is the best blocker I have seen back there as a high school kid and I played college baseball and

I think he was better than a lot of the guys I saw in college.”

Donovan said his mental makeup is the reason for his well-rounded success.

“I attribute my success in baseball to my mind and how I go about

it,” he said. “Granted, I very fortunate to be blessed with athleticism and I have put in the work to be a good physical baseball player, but my mindset is more important. I

I think the biggest thing is compartmentalizing my analytical baseball mind, my emotional baseball mind and my present baseball mind. Those three subsets of consciousness are so intertwined that they can really mess up each other. You have to realize when emotion is necessary, when diving deep into the analytics is necessary and when to just tone all that out and just make an athletic move.”

While Donovan is headed to the University of Michigan next season, he was drafted a few weeks ago by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft.

If not for his plans to head to Ann Arbor next year, he would have been a much higher selection.

“It was unbelievable (to be drafted),” Donovan said. “Had I wanted to sign professionally, I would have been a higher draft pick, so that was really nice, but that being said it was an incredible honor to be drafted. I grew up the biggest Cub fan, Charlie was a huge Cub fan, last year I went to the World Series Game 5 – I might

have shed a few tears when they won the World Series. I was one of those dummies at the Cubs’ parade sprinting to be up front. So, just the culmination of all my life as a Cubs’ fan and getting drafted by then, it was unbelievable and even though I knew I wasn’t going to sign – a few tears were shed.”

TYLER BAUTISTA, BENET Second baseman hit a teambest .410 with 18 RBI. He scored 31 runs and stole 12 bases.

MARTY DOSEN, BENET Batted .358 for the Redwings, driving in 32 runners. He had five home runs and 14 extra base hits on the season.

TYLER ROSEN, DOWNERS NORTH Senior pitcher and infielder, was 6-1 with one save on the season. In 44.2 innings, he struck out 55 batters and walked only eight. He batted .271 on the season with a .354 on base percentage and led the team with 17 RBI. He will play next season at the College of DuPage.

“We were on an Indian reservation,” she said. “The people felt like we were being forced onto them by the government. So, they were kind of distant from us at first, but slowly they warmed up to us. It was hard for the first one, kind of not knowing what we’re doing, and then the residents are kind of backing away and not really wanting you to be there. By the end, they ended up being really happy once they realized what we there [for] and we were actually trying to help them…

We were volunteers to help them with what they needed.”

The experience also serves as a good way to meet new people, Pietrzak said.

The reactions received from people whose homes are repaired will vary to a degree throughout the trip, David said.

“We have had experiences where the people who own the house were not really happy about it, but in the end after they watch the kids for a week spending time on their house working on these, 90 percent of the time those people step out and say, ‘You know what, I didn’t want this.

According to David, there are very few products for people with vision or hearing impairments or for people who have developmental or cognitive disabilities. The distributors of mobility products tend to come to the Abilities Expo to reach a large audience. On the other hand, the other not-for-profit organizations and resources come to the Abilities Expo to share their resources across the disability community. In 2016, the Abilities Expo Chicago reached approximately 3500 adults and 800 kids.
