ARC takes shape Park district athletic recreation center set to open Jan. 2

With construction well underway, the Woodridge Athletic Recreation Center has a tentative opening date.

The Woodridge Park District announced that the ARC, located at 8201 Janes Ave., will begin offering residents a variety of fitness, sports, health, wellness, and social and recreational programs when it opens its doors Jan. 2.

The project broke ground in April 2015, and construction of the two-story $18 million athletic recreation center is expected to end in mid-November. The park district said staff would then begin moving into the building before the tentatively scheduled opening date.

The project has been long in the works, with the park district seeking

public feedback numerous times in the past several years about what residents would like to see in their new athletic and recreation facility.

“We based [the center] off what the public wanted,” park district Executive Director Mike Adams said during a recent tour of the building. He noted that park district received a state grant to offset some of the project’s costs.

When completed, the ARC will have an indoor turf field that can be used for soccer, lacrosse, football, cheerleading and several other sports.

A walking-jogging track, full-size court gymnasium that can be curtained off into two junior sized courts or three volleyball courts, two aerobic-dance rooms, numerous multi-purpose rooms with dividable spaces, and a fitness room with free weights and cardiovascular equipment will also be housed within the new facility.

both the indoor turf field and gymnasium, giving residents a scenic location to run or walk indoors.

Adams said the indoor field can also be used for baseball, and the facility will also offer batting cages for athletes. “[Indoor turfs] are in high demand, so this is going to be used all the time,” Adams said. “Even in the summer, when it’s hot, people are going to come in here.”

The center will also offer plenty of storage space, including lockers rooms and family changing rooms, to go along with that high demand.

“Storage is always a commodity,” Adams added.

A warming kitchen on the first floor will be capable of serving the catering needs of any of the facility’s programs, and a concessions area will also be available. On the second floor, visitors will have access to a ropes course with five platforms to cross.

The building’s design utilizes plenty of natural light, as large windows stretch across much of the building. And in the

Ad hoc committee shares recommendations for comprehensive plan, downtown zoning Recommendations focus on operations, design, transportation and parking

In March, the Downers Grove Village Council created an ad hoc committee tasked with updating the 2011 comprehensive plan.

The comprehensive planning committee, with help from the plan commission, was given the additional responsibility of developing updated zoning regulations in Downers Grove’s downtown area.

According to board documents, the committee met in May and June and updated the focusof the plan to include additions and

modifications to its downtown policy recommendations, revisions to downtown catalyst sites, the creation of a new downtown development concept and development of downtown “sub-areas.”

Director of Community Development Stan Popovich discussed the committee’s findings during the Downers Grove Village Council’s July 12 meeting.

He said its recommendations fall into three categories: design, operations, and transportation and parking.

On the design side, the committee recommended maintaining a “sense of enclosure” in the downtown area,

while also utilizing stormwater best practices and protecting historic buildings.

The committee noted a need for improvement in various downtown operations, such as identifying areas for centralized garbage collection, and encouraging outdoor seating areas for restaurant and entertainment uses.

For transportation and parking, the committee recommend that the village explore a pedestrian grade separated crossing, ensure parking for motorcycles and scooters, and look into new locations for expanded parking opportunities, including a new parking deck.

According to board documents, current rates for a 20-year loan are at 1.86 percent, while current rates for municipal bonds are at 2.7 percent.

Thus, the loan is expected to save the village about $150,000 for 2016 projects.

The council approved an ordinance in February that

authorized the village to borrow funds from the IEPA’s Public Water Supply Loan Program.

Board documents state that this occurred after the IEPA approved a five-year planning document for $18.31 million for water infrastructure projects from 2016 through 2020.

Staff anticipates that the village will use $15 million, rather than the full loan agreement. There are five separate loans under this program, one for each year.

Finance Director Judy Buttny said that since the 2016 project has now been bid, the loan agreement has to be approved.

Additionally, the ARC’s parking lot will be designed using permeable pavers to mitigate stormwater runoff.

“The detention is built within the parking lot,” Adams said.

“This allows the rainwater to go through the brick pavers and into the system and then drains out.”

In October, the park district expects to release a new website for the athletic recreational center that will include information on facility rentals, fitness classes and gym memberships.

The plan commission also recommended a fourth sub-area in the center of downtown at Main and Curtiss, which would allow buildings of three to four stories, as well as mixed-use buildings and offices.

Mayor Martin Tully began the July 12 council discussion by praising downtown Downers Grove as a special place with historic value, but adding that he felt change was inevitable.

Commissioner Dave Olsen said maintaining a historic core downtown is very important.

He added that what the plan

commission described as the fourth sub-area was too large, and he wanted to avoid nonconforming, buildings that don’t follow the zoning code, situations.

“Conceptually, I think the idea of four zoning districts is too much,” Olsen said, adding that he did like the idea of a core district.

Commissioner Bob Barnett proposed a moratorium on demolition permits and special use applications within the downtown business and downtown transition districts.

Tully said he understood Barnett’s concern, but added that special use requests are made frequently and he didn’t want to have a negative impact on those property owners.

“It would be like taking the downtown off the market,” he said.

Electronics recycling program continues Numerous changes have been made to free program Bugle Staff Downers Grove Township will continue its monthly electronics recycling program in Westmont, but participants will notice several changes.

The program takes place from 8 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month at the township’s highway department facility, 318 E. Quincy St. Electronic recycling will not be held if the third Saturday falls on a holiday.

Numerous changes have been made to the program, including a charge for TVs. All TVs will need to have a prepaid coupon from the program’s new recycling

vendor, AVA Recycling. Prices for TVs will range from $15 to $60, and a copy of the coupon can be taken to AVA’s retail store in Glendale Heights to be used as cash towards the purchase of refurbished electronic equipment.

Information on the cost

of recycling TVs and coupon purchases can be obtained by going to the company’s website, www.avarecycling.com, and clicking on the municipal box on the top left portion of the screen.

Additionally, audio cassettes, videotapes and CDs will not be accepted Most electronics will be accepted during the monthly program, including computers, laptops, LCD monitors, batteries and UPS systems; printers, copiers, and fax machines; electronic circuit boards, cords and wires; small appliances and toys; central office equipment; stereo equipment, games and PDAs; banking and financial equipment; medical equipment; and telephones and cell phones.

As in the past, the collection event closes promptly at noon.

Electronics can only be dropped off on event dates, and drop-offs outside of designated hours are not permitted.

Adopt-A-Hydrant program returns Westmont has over 3,000 hydrants The Westmont Fire Department, Public Works Department and Westmont First Committee announced that they will continue the Westmont Adopt-A-Hydrant program.

Westmont has over 3,000 hydrants, and the Adopt-AHydrant program helps the fire department keep the community safe by making sure hydrants are visible and accessible. The goals of the program are safety, aesthetics, pride and creativity, according to the village. Residents can help the fire department by keeping hydrants snow-free during the winter, installing year-round safety flags, and keeping hydrants clean and freshly painted.

This program allows citizens an opportunity to step forward and assist the community safety effort.

Residents and businesses can get involved in a variety of ways, according to the village.

The community safety adoption is no charge, and requires residents to agree to keep their adopted hydrant snow-free during the winter and overgrowth-free during the summer. A community safety adoption plus safety flag costs $10, in addition to keeping hydrants snow-free during the winter and overgrowth-free during the summer. Individuals can also sponsor a safety flag for their adopted hydrant - to be installed by public works.

In addition to keeping hydrants accessible and sponsoring a safety flag, a $50 neighborhood pride adoption allows residents to design artwork and paint their adopted hydrant. Designs can include up to seven colors and must be approved by the village.

Corporate level adoption starts

at $75 and includes working with a local school or organization regarding artwork for the hydrant, coordinating maintenance to keep the hydrant visible and accessible, and sponsoring a safety flag for the adopted hydrant.

All hydrant adoptions are good for three years. Participants are asked to renew their adoption, including adoption fees, annually and help keep hydrants in good condition, touching up with paint as needed and free of snow in the winter.

All neighborhood pride and corporate level adoptions will be automaticallyenteredintheAdoptA-Hydrant contest. Contestants will be judged on creativity, theme and artistic expression. First place receives $100 in area business gift certificates, second place gets $50 in gift certificates, and third place takes home $25 in gift certificates.

It’s the first week of sophomore English class, and my class has been assigned to read “Romeo & Juliet.” The teacher gets the discussion going with a simple question, “Who does Romeo love?” One girl raises her hand and says in a lively tone, “Juliet!”

We all nod our heads in agreement, as the answer seems obvious. But the teacher pauses, turns to the girl, and lets out her best game show buzzer noise: “Ennngght, sorry.” She then pivots toward the board and writes a name: R-O-S-A-L-I-N-E. “Romeo loves Rosaline,” she informs us.

Twenty-five pairs of eyes look at her in dumbfounded silence. Did we read the right play? Who is this Rosaline you speak of?

Of course, she was absolutely right.

Although Juliet’s name makes it into the title of the play, much of Romeo’s time is spent lamenting the fact that he can’t be with Rosaline. Yet, he quickly moves on when he meets Juliet, and the divide between their families only makes his passion stronger.

Ultimately, all logic goes out the window and (hoping we don’t need a spoiler alert here) the two die for one another.

Breaking the spell Is this what we mean by love? Joy, devotion, intrigue…certainly. But fleeting attraction, young lust, and (again, not really a spoiler) death by poison and dagger? I hope not. Love is not the fantasy that fairy tales tell us to spend a life chasing.

Relationships change; they aren’t a fixed state of bliss. The problem begins when a person thinks that love must be a constant thrill ride of passionate perfection.

I won’t be so pretentious as to claim that I have discovered something unique about love that no one else has experienced. What I do know is that holding love up as a mystical ideal can do a lot more harm in our relationships than good. The seemingly mundane aspects of relationships can be just as exciting and important for keeping the connection.

Do you want to know a secret?

Marriage therapist John Gottman has done years of research on what makes marriages successful, with often surprising results. Gottman has become so attuned to the ways that couples interact that he can accurately predict divorce within a few minutes of observing a couple close to 90 percent of the time.

Here’s a quick multiple choice question: What is the most important thing to make a marriage successful?

A). Financial stability B). Marital friendship C). Minimal arguments.

While many people guess that the number of arguments or the number in the bank account determine the likelihood of divorce, the lack of a marital friendship is most often the culprit. The great news is that this friendship – and the love that emerges

from a deeper connection – can be worked on. It doesn’t have to be like the fireworks of “Romeo & Juliet,” which flash bright but fade quickly.

Behold, a pale horse While Gottman doesn’t tell couples to avoid arguing, he does caution them about something he calls “The Four Horsemen.”

These mythical figures take on particular significance when they show up in our relationships in the form of Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness and Stonewalling. These are the four traits that begin to spell doom in relationships, although they too can be worked on in order to keep Death away.

When we identify these unhealthy traits in ourselves, it’s time to pull back and reevaluate our patterns. Ultimately, it comes back to a commitment to the relationship and to the friendship as a foundation that allows a couple to overcome any obstacle. And, there are some simple ways to enhance that friendship, whether the couple has been together for days or for decades.

Got to get you (back) into my life You can test your own knowledge of your partner, while also giving yourself a chance to expand your awareness, by taking an online quiz.

A search for a Gottman relationship quiz will provide several good options.

The questions ask about things like whether you know your partner’s best friends, favorite place to eat, life dreams and how well you respect each other.

Don’t worry, a low score doesn’t mean the end is near, but it might be a good opportunity to work on the areas that are lagging behind. And, just taking the time and making an effort could be enough to see fireworks again.

Former Raider Doris to compete for Guyana in 2016 Olympics By mArK GreGory sports rEportEr

For the last four years, Bolingbrook native Troy Doris has had his sights set on competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janerio, Brazil – however the way he is getting there may seem unconventional to some.

Doris will compete in the triple jump, representing the country of Guyana, the fourth-smallest country on mainland South America. Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Suriname to the east and Venezuela to the west.

Doris is Guyanese by naturalization, with both his parents being born there and coming to America at a young age.

“It has been years of anticipation and hope for this moment,” Doris said. “I used to compete for the U.S, but I felt that switching to Guyana just gave me a better opportunity for track and field.

The U.S. is more competitive and I knew I could have done it, there are just so many people that I know that I know there are chances to miss out on competing in these Olympic games even if you are one of the best in the world.”

Doris had been the No. 2 ranked jumper in the world earlier this year, but he knows with a talented American contingent competing for a bid at Rio, one bad day could

have saw him miss out on his opportunity.

“Now that everyone is established, I am currently No. 6 in the world, which is phenomenal, but I see how quick things change,” Doris said. “I have had a number of bad days. Thankfully I have had more good days than bad days to cover them up. It is just crazy to keep myself in a situation to be ranked this high and maybe not be able to compete with some of the best in the world.”

The better chance to compete was not the only reason Doris chose to compete for Guyana – there is a sense of national pride within his parents and family.

“I am excited to compete to compete for Guyana and I have wanted to compete for them since 2012,” he said. “I have roots there and my family is from Guyana and it is very sentimental for them and now that I have the opportunity to compete, I am taking full advantage. For me to be in a situation to be the guy representing them is amazing.”

Guayana is slated to have only four track competitors and two swimmers represent the country in the games, so Doris knows it will be a more intimate experience.

“It gives you the feeling that more eyes are on you from the country,” he said. “There is no pressure, but they are expecting good things. It is a grand situation.

Jarosz tabbed AO; Sobolewski leads locals

When Plainfield North’s Zach Jarosz opted to have surgery midway through the basketball season to be ready by midseason for baseball, he had one thing on his mind – a state baseball title.

While the Tigers came up short, the plan worked for Jarosz as he came on strong down the stretch of the season and helped the Tigers win their first state trophy.

That capped a remarkable season career for Jarosz, but his senior year is one for the record books.

That is why Jarosz is the Voyager Media Male Multisport Athlete of the Year.

It all started during the football season, where Jarosz made some incredible catches, including one to help beat Oswego.

For the season he caught 47 passes for 842 yards and 12 touchdowns. The stats don’t tell

the whole tale though as Jarosz was named All-State in Class 7A. “He was a game breaker for us and proved to be a very difficult matchup for many teams,” North football coach Tim Kane said after football season. “He also set numerous school records for receiving yards and TD’s.”

Next up was basketball where Jarosz started and saw extensive minutes as a hard-working player that coach Bob Krahulik praised throughout the season.

His loss midway through the season hurt the team in multiple ways as Jarosz not only brought toughness to the team, he added a valuable body as the Tigers were riddled with injuries by the end of the year and went with a six or seven man rotation at the end of the year.

Then came baseball, where he didn’t start the season but was the leadoff hitter once healthy and batted .356 with nine doubles, two triples and scored 28 runs in 27 games, culminating with the

state trip.

Other multisport athletes of the year, by zone, are:

NANA AKENTEN, VALLEY VIEW The Bolingbrook junior was IBCA 3A/4A special-mention AllState and a member of the AllSouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division team.

Akenten was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area Basketball third team after he averaged 14 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting .460 from floor and .345 behind the 3-point line.

“Nana is one of the most talented kids we have had in our program and is only going to get better,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said after his all-area selection. “He is an outstanding student-athlete who represents everything that is good about BHS.” In the spring, Akenten teamed up with Shawn Showalter, Tanner

Banks and Tyler Elmore to advance to the state track and field state finals. The quartet posted a time of 1:30.36 in the 800-meter relay.

JON ARENAS, NILES Arenas was a two-sport all-area member for Maine South. During the football season, he had 56 receptions for 732 yards and eight touchdowns, bringing his twoyear totals to 88 catches for 1,362 yards and 14 scores.

On the hardwood, he was a third team all-area selection and Voyager Media All-Star game participant. He recorded 14.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, in addition to 101 assists and 57 steals.

“Jon was a three-year starter that helped us win 25, 26 and 21 games,” Maine South basketball coach Tony Lavorato said. “In his senior year, he led our team on and off the floor with his dedication and passion for our program. Jon was always a natural scorer, but developed himself into an all-

around player throughout his career. His greatest impact to our program was his character. He has influenced many future Hawks with his dedication and approach.”

DERRIUS RODGERS, JOLIET/SHOREWOOD In a season full of talented multi-sport athletes in the Joliet area such as Minooka’s Joe Butler (basketball and baseball) and JCA’s Harold Davis (basketball and football), it was Lockport’s Derrius Rodgers that earned the nod.

A core member of the Porters’ football team, playing defensive back and wide receiver, he had expected to continue his career on the gridiron in college.

Then track happened.

The same success that convinced Rodgers to pursue track at Illinois State University also earned him the nod for the

There has only been one Olympic medalist in the history of Guyana, as bantamweight boxer Michael Anthony earned a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union.

Rio will not be the first time Doris has competed overseas and he said he has enjoyed all of the experiences.

Rodgers claimed three medals at the IHSA state finals, grabbing a pair of second-place finishes, coming up just short of Galesburg’s Josh Eiker in both the 100-meter dash (10.66 seconds) and the 200 dash (22.13).

Rodgers’ medal in the 100 dash is the first-ever for a Porter and his second-place finish in the 200 ties him for second all-time with

“I have always appreciated the professionals that were in my situation that I looked up to, but I think what has gotten me to the point where I am able to go all over and compete is the fact that since high school until now, I just take it year by year and try and do my best and appreciate every moment I get out of it,” he said. “It just so happens that the moments are getting bigger and bigger and they are to the point to where I am competing against the best in the world and I have a chance to travel the world and have these neat

experiences and experience other cultures is something that I never imagined I would do as a 15-year old jumping in high school.”

While at Bolingbrook, Doris owns two of the top 20 best triple jumps in Illinois history, including the No. 2 spot with a state championship leap of 52-feet, 3-inches his senior season in 2007.

He also claimed the state title in the event his junior year and won the long jump his senior year.

The then had a successful career at the University of Iowa before turning professional after

graduation.

“It was an interest freshman year and sophomore year it became an obsession,” Doris said. “Then, my junior and senior year, I had significant progression and I knew then I could take it serious and go to college and professional. I knew it was meant for me.”

Knowing it was meant for him meant a shot at the Olympics, which now that it is a reality, was not something Doris was going to skip the games because of something like Zika Virus, which has been the reason some of the

world’s top golfers and basketball players have passed on going.

“I understand because like for the basketball players, their focus is on winning the NBA title. But for track, this is what you work so hard for and it is not easy to just give up on it,” he said. “I can only control what I can control. I can’t control the political situations and I can’t control Zika virus, so I just worry about what I can control.”

What Doris will look to control is his opportunity and bring an Olympic home for Guyana and for Bolingbrook.

Rodgers’ third medal came as he joined Chris Gargano, Jesse Bustami and Sheldon Snapp to place sixth in the 800-relay with a time of 1:27.67.

Rodgers owns the Lockport honors of the most individual medals with four, as Setta has three individual awards and was part of three relay teams. He also joined Nick Setta and Dan Schrock as the only Lockport athletes with

three medals in one state final.

He leaves Lockport with five medals in his career, making him the second most decorated Porter ever behind Setta, who won six medals from 1995-98.

Input sought on future of DuPage County tourism DCVB will hold a series of three identical public workshops aimed at brainstorming The DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau announced a series of public workshops it says will aid in the development of a strategic plan for DuPage County’s multibillion dollar travel and hospitality industry.

Called “DuPage GPS: A Tourism Roadmap,” the bureau will look for ways to “Grow, Prosper and Share” in the economic bounty of tourist revenue flowing to the county.

“As the second largest county in Illinois, with a population approaching one million, DuPage cannot afford to rest on its laurels and expect tourism to grow here without sustained effort,” said Beth Marchetti, executive director of the DCVB. “We all benefit from a vibrant tourism industry and ‘DuPage GPS’ is our way of getting the valuable public input we need to ensure that conventions and tourist dollars remain a cornerstone of our economy.”

To that end, the DCVB will hold a series of three identical public workshops aimed at brainstorming new and creative ways to maximize the benefits of the hospitality industry. Input and ideas that help DuPage County host more conventions and meetings, fill more hotels and restaurants, and increase attendance at entertainment venues will be discussed and debated.

Veggie Fest is returning to Lisle this weekend for an 11th year of making attendees’ taste buds happy and healthy.

Congressman Bill Foster, D-Illinois, will open the 2016 festival with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. July 23. One of the largest vegetarian food and lifestyle festivals in North America, the free festival runs July 23 and 24 at the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center, 4045 N. Naperville Road in Lisle.

The annual festival offers a wide variety of vegetarian options in its international food court. Veggie Fest favorite Caribbean Kitchen will once again offer its veggie chicken dishes. And, new dishes such as Buddha Bowls – quinoa, brown rice, greens and flavorful sauces – and vegetarian chilidogs have been added to the food court’s 2016 menu.

“If you’re a vegetarian, you’ll love knowing you can eat something at every single booth in the international food court,” Veggie Fest spokesman Jonathan Kruger said. “If you’re new to vegetarian food, we’re sure you’ll

find something that makes you say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know vegetarian food could be so good.’”

Additionally, the festival will feature a large selection of vegan and raw food options.

Food is not all that’s on the Veggie Fest menu.

Health professionals will engage attendees on a variety of diet, lifestyle and environmental issues both days of the fest.

Dr. Kim Allan Williams Sr., president of the American College of Cardiology and chief of cardiology at Rush University Medical Center, will join Dr. Terry Mason, chief operating officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health, to make their case for a plant-based diet. Williams is scheduled to present “Nutrition and Heart Disease: Taking the DIE out of Diet” at 1:30 p.m. July 23, and Mason will present “The Public Health Approach to Breast Cancer” at 1:30 p.m. July 24.

Nature’s Path Organics CEO Arran Stephens will present “Global Warming and the Impact of Plant

Based Solutions” at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Renowned spiritual master Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, head of Science of Spirituality, will be the keynote speaker at Veggie Fest’s Spirituality & Health Symposium.

Maharaj is scheduled to speak on both days of the fest. Saturday’s keynote address, titled “Healthy and Happy You,” and a Sunday talk, titled “Keys to a Peaceful Life,” will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the main tent.

Additionally, festivalgoers will enjoy engaging food demos by restaurant owners, chefs and authors; a children’s tent with face painting, clowns and crafts; live music from some of Chicago’s best bands; and more than 100 vendor booths to explore.

“It’s easy to see why over 30,000 people from around the world attended the two-day Veggie Fest last year,” Kruger added.

State Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, is teaming up with state Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, to host their annual senior fair next week in Lemont.

More than 50 community partners, including AAA and Wellspring Healthcare, are expected to participate in the senior fair, scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to noon July 27 at CORE Fitness Center, 16028 W. 127th St. “Our senior fair is a one-stop shop for seniors and their families
