Chilympics returns to village for second year Chilympics takes place from noon to 4 p.m.

Could it even be the best in the country? You’ll have a chance to find out in September when the 2nd annual Chilympics Chili Cook off returns to Downers Grove.

The home-style chili event, organized by the Downers Grove Park District and sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is now accepting applications to compete in the fall event.

The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and an entry to the ICS national finals held in California.

Prizes will also be awarded to the second and third place finishers and to the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Debra Hunt won first place during the Downers

Grove Park District’s inaugural Chilympics chili cook-off last year. Mike Goodman took home the second place and People’s Choice awards in 2013, and John Pastore won third place.

The Chilympics takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at Fishel Park in downtown Downers Grove. The contest is open to all ages and costs $45 to enter, which includes a $20 membership fee to ICS, a $25 Park District registration fee and a commemorative t-shirt.

Competitors must also cook enough chili for the judges and the People’s Choice tasting. For more information and competitor application forms, visit www. dgparks.org. The village of Downers Grove has been notified by the Federal Emergency Management Association that Downers Grove’s rating under the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System has been raised from a CRS 7 to CRS 6.

The Community Rating System is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes communities for implementing floodplain management practices that exceed Federal minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program to provide protection from flooding. Only 57 communities in Illinois participate in the CRS. In exchange for a

The village’s CRS 6 rating qualifies property owners who live in the floodplain for a 20 percent discount on flood insurance premiums as of May 1, 2014. Property owners that do not live in the floodplain can still benefit from a 10 percent reduction in flood insurance premiums.

The rating agency recognized more than a dozen stormwater best practices and activities put in place by the village. Some of these practices include village flood protection standards, local flood studies and open space preservation.

Property owners should ask their insurance agent if they or their company participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, or visit www.floodsmart.gov to find a participating agent in the area to take advantage of the coverage and savings.

Former pastor, missionary returns to Saint Mary of Gostyn Lifelong learner and enthusiastic octogenarian continues to serve Father Donald Kenny, former pastor of St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Parish in Downers Grove, is returning to St. Mary’s in July for a four-evening series on Jesus in the Gospels.

The lifelong learner and enthusiastic octogenarian continues to serve in active ministry in spite of health challenges. Long-time parishioners recall his Bible studies presented with energy, humor and pastoral insight.

A Southside Chicago native, Kenny first taught high school

students as a Christian Brother. He has served in the Joliet Diocese since his ordination in 1966; in addition to St. Mary’s (from 19821994), he is former pastor of St. Andrew in Romeoville and St. Thomas the Apostle parishes in Naperville.

Nearing retirement, he felt a strong call to mission. He learned Spanish and relocated in 2002 to a neglected area of Quito, Ecuador.

With the collaboration of local leaders and supporters in the Chicago area, he established the Quito Barrio Outreach which has developed several initiatives to bring services and dignity to those who live in his community, including a soup kitchen, a day care center, a medical clinic and

adult education.

“I will be sharing what I have learned in Quito about the faith from these simple, uneducated people,” Kenny said in a recent letter to his supporters. “That is how to subtract, how to push stuff --philosophy, psychology, theology--aside and just focus on Jesus. That’s the faith for me now, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

Imagine a halftime show so spectacular the outcome of the sporting event it’s tied to is less than secondary; it’s nonexistent.

If this show sounds appealing, plan to attend the 31st annual Cavalcade of Brass, a competition featuring the best drum and bugle corps from around the country.

“People who come out are going to enjoy the musical and athletic-like aspects of these drum corps,” said Craig Rasin, board member for The Cavaliers, one of seven groups competing at Sunday’s event.

“It’s like a great halftime show, where you don’t care about the football game because the halftime is better.”

The Rosemont-based Cavaliers will host the Cavalcade of Brass, which starts at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Benedictine University Sports Complex, 5700 College Road, Lisle.The upcoming show is just one of the 106 events that make up the 2014 Drum Corps International Tour, an annual summer competition made up of more than 50 competitive drum and bugle corps of varying levels. The tour will stop in 100 different cities in 39 states before it culminates with the DCI World Championship in August at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Cavaliers are one of 22 drum and bugle corps that makes up the DCI’s World Class level, and they have set themselves aside as one of the more decorated groups in that class. Between 1992 and 2006, the Cavaliers won seven DCI Championships, including a dominant run in the 2000s where the corps won five championships in seven years.

The last time the Cavaliers won was 2006, but Rasin said the corps is poised to get back

Sunday’s Cavalcade of Brass could be a measuring stick for the Cavaliers in 2014. Three of the corps they will see are former DCI World Championship winners, including the Blue Devils. The Concord, California, drum and bugle corps is the most decorated corps in DCI history, winning the World Championship 15 times and finishing in the top five for the past 29 consecutive years.

However, Rasin said the DCI summer tour is about more than winning for the 150 collegeage members who make up the Cavaliers corps.

“Everybody wants to win, let’s be honest about it, but these kids love the tour,” Rasin said, who was a former member of the Cavaliers before joining the board of directors in 2000.

“They love the competition, the camaraderie, the education they get, the friendships they make, the travel they get to do; they just love the activity. For the most part, these kids have a blast doing it.”

The Cavaliers are an allmale fraternity consisting of 150 members between 16 and 22 years old, according to the group’s website. Other DCI corps are open to male and female participation.

The Cavaliers formed in 1948 as the drum and bugle corps for Boy Scout Troop 111 in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. The corps came close to shutting down in the early 1980s, but the village of Rosemont saved the group when it became its official sponsor in 1982.

Residents are reminded that conditions are ideal for the spread of mosquitos and the West Nile Virus. West Nile is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes.

The best way to prevent West Nile Virus disease is to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Start by minimizing the time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are the most active.

When outside between dusk and dawn, people should wear loosefitting, light-colored clothing that includes long pants, longsleeved shirts, socks and shoes.

Additionally, insect repellents

containing DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus should be applied to exposed skin and clothing, and make sure that doors and windows have tight fitting screens.

Homeowners should remove containers from their property that may hold water to eliminate standing water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, i.e., discarded tires, cans, ceramic pots. They also should make sure that rain gutters, downspouts, swimming pools and pool covers are free of standing water.

Water in bird baths should be changed at least once per week, and drain and replace water in children’s backyard wading pools every four to five days.

Additionally, keeping grass and weeds cut short eliminates hiding places for adult mosquitoes.

So, here’s a question for all of us heading into the November gubernatorial elections: Do you prefer a candidate who tells you stuff you don’t like to hear but goes into detail, or one who says some cool things in cool ways but doesn’t explain much?

As I see it, that’s our choices for governor so far. On the one hand, you have Gov. Pat Quinn who wants to extend the unpopular income tax increase and holds out the possible repurposing of the state detention facility in Joliet as a job-creating carrot, or a guy who says Illinois is in terrible shape, needs to have tax cuts and worker’s comp reform, as well as term limits for those conniving, professional politicians in Springfield. But doesn’t say how.

The U.S. and Illinois supreme courts already have said term limits are unconstitutional. I know there are a lot of closet Libertarians out there who would like to see that passed, but really, do we need another law on the books? And this one telling us who we can’t vote for? Sounds like back door disenfranchisement to me.

Yes, Illinois is in terrible shape, and I would love Bruce Rauner to tell us how we are going to

get out of it. Worker’s comp is a mess, there are too many taxes and other burdens on business.

I would love to have heard the plan from a businessman who has raised millions as a venture capitalist.

We had our first chance to see Rauner in person at a Joliet Chamber luncheon Friday where he was the main speaker. He and Lt. Gov. candidate Evelyn Sanguinetti of Wheaton made the rounds during lunch, introducing themselves to attendees, taking pictures with them and having a great time.

Rauner and Sanguinetti each got up and spoke to the crowd about how we need to change things in Springfield, how four of the last eight governors (seven, actually, including a Republican) have wound up in prison, how small business is the backbone of the state and how the current administration is breaking those backs.

So, what’s your plan, Bruce? I hear Rauner actually does like to answer questions, but his handlers don’t like him to. So there was no question and answer period after his talk Friday, as most guests generally do. There was only a brief press conference afterward where the Chicago media, when not cannibalizing each other, were peppering him with

questions about how he got his daughter into a prestigious innercity Chicago school after she was initially turned down. (Here’s a hint: He’s connected. He’s got dough. What would you do if she were your kid?)

All of this wraps up without so much as a mention of what he would do about the pension crisis, what he would do about worker’s comp, how he would cover the cost of reducing taxes to businesses and others, his position on the South Suburban Airport, the Illiana, education … or anything else.

When I ran out of the Victorian Ballroom after him, calling his name, I was intercepted by a woman who rather rudely chastised me for doing so, instead referring me to Rauner Flack Central. I have heard some of my colleagues have had even ruder treatment.

So instead of answers, Rauner tells the crowd four Democrats told him they were going to vote for him because they liked the cute commercials with his wife.

Venture capitalist, indeed.

Donovan repeats as Voyager Media Player of the Year

For the second year in a row, Westmont shortstop Charlie Donovan posted off the charts numbers, batting .495 with 47 RBI, 50 runs scored, eight doubles, four triples, six home runs and 37 stolen bases and for the second year in a row, Donovan has been named the Voyager Media Baseball Player of the Year.

It is Donovan’s lack of care for stats and numbers that make him such a dangerous player.

“Over the years I have realized that if you play for the team, the individual result will show up,” said Donovan, who committed to the University of Michigan prior to his sophomore year.“If I just stick to the team approach, the stats will be there. If it is all about me and I try and hit a home run every time up, the stats will go down. It is really cool how it works out that way and I think a lot of guys could benefit from that.”

One at-bat this season sums up his mind-set as a player.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning of the supersectional, one run across the plate and the Sentinels still without a hit, Donovan stepped to the plate and instead of trying to hit a home run or rip a double in the gap and clear the bases, he calmly hit the ball to the right side of the field, reached on a fielder’s choice and got the second run across the plate.

“Because that game was so tight and the game was so crucial and those runs were huge, the only thing that mattered to me in that at-bat was the RBI,” Donovan said. “I didn’t care about getting a hit or a home run or being a super hero, I just wanted to get that run in. I was just looking to get the ball on the ground and

get the run in.

“I take pride in trying to play the game the right way. I try not to think too much about statistics and just try to win.

Winning comes from doing the little things that maybe nobody notices, but that have a big impact on the game.”

This season, Donovan also served as the team’s closer, pitching in seven games and posting a 3-0 record with three saves, allowing no runs and only five hits to 13 strikeouts.

“That was huge for us this year,” said Westmont coach D.J. Cocks.

“We got into a lot of tight spots at the end of games and he was willing to go in there and do that for is team. He is a competitor and he wants to win and he is willing to do whatever it takes and that is not something you can say about all guys.”

That attitude and ability helped Donovan and the Sentinels to the school’s best-ever finish, tying for third in state after rain cancelled the third-placed game at state.

“He can do everything for you, and I mean everything. He can go out there and go four-for-four, steal bases, knock runs in, play great defense at short and if the game is close he will come in and close the game out on the mound,” Cocks said. “That is in his instinct and character and that, added to his talent, makes him even more special. He will be remembered as an individual player because of all the records he will break at Westmont, but he wants to be remembered with the team.”

“Joe is a three-year varsity starter,” Downers South coach Darren Orel said.“He is a grinder.

Joe does everything well; hits, throws, plays defense and runs.

Joe is a leader and he will be attending Santa Clara University next year.”

JOE BOYLE Hit .398 with six doubles, three homers and 28 RBI for Benet.

JOE CALLAHAN Plainfield North senior pitcher went 6-1 with a 1.81 ERA and had 46 strikeouts.

NICK DALESANDRO JCA dual threat batted .409 with 28 RBI, seven doubles, four triples and three homers. On the mound, he went 7-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

“Nobody ran on him,” Gustafson said. “If you looked up a hardnosed ballplayer in dictionary it would be him. Just a tremendous all-around player. He could play any position.”

Notre Dame’s sparkplug shortstop led the Dons in batting average (.372), on-base percentage (.437), slugging percentage (.455) and hits (45), was second on the team in stolen bases (10) and tied for second on the team with 19 RBIs while hitting leadoff. He made the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association team as a junior.

As a junior last year, Pennington was the Hawks’ lock-down closer, helping the team advance to supersectional play. He didn’t miss a beat making the switch from closer to ace starter, posting a 9-1 record and an ERA of 1.62.

Like his teammate, Gehrig Parker, Pennington earned IBCA all-state honors.

RYAN TAYLOR Taylor hit .473 with 44 hits,14 doubles, three homers and 25 RBI for Downers South.

“Ryan has been are most dangerous offensive player this year and I think his numbers speak for themselves,” Orel stated. “His defense has been awesome as well. Ryan has four saves on the mound in some key situations as well.”

ZACH THOMAS Joliet West senior hit .441 with five doubles, two

triples, 25 RBI and 21 runs scored. He walked 17 times and fanned only three times in 123 plate appearances.

On the mound, he was 7-2-1 with a 1.14ERA. In 55.1 innings, he allowed only 28 hits and nine earned runs, walking 23 and striking out 70.

NEAL TYRELL Minooka senior hit .417. He tallied 10 doubles and 14 RBI, while striking out only eight times in 127 at bats.

JOVANY URBIETA Senior from Plainfield East hit .400 with 11 doubles and 31 RBI.

MITCH VOGRIN Senior pitcher from Minooka was 9-0 with one save with a 1.15 ERA and 0.821 WHIP. He allowed 33 hits and 22 walks while striking out 85 batters.

MATT WELCH Welch hit .346 with 45 hits, four doubles, six stolen bases and 38 runs for Plainfield N o r t h .

Treetops resort

Premier Golf Four courses offer variety Last week I talked about the great experience of playing 63 holes of golf in a day in the Man vs.

Golf Challenge at taylor’s take Treetops Resort in by scott taylor Gaylord, Michigan.

This week, I will go into greater detail about the courses we played.

We started on the Premier Course, which, in my opinion, was the toughest of the courses.

The greens were absolutely brutal (toughness wise, they were in great shape). There were multiple holes where I thought I would be in great shape but my ball trickled down a slope.The par-5 7th hole I hit a great approach set that rolled back down the hill to the front of the green,inches away from having a 5-foot birdie putt. The next shot rolled right back down to me. It is those shots you see on TV when you watch the pros play the more difficult courses.

The variety of holes is also great as you have both short and long holes, uphill and down hill shots. The fifth hole allows you to attempt to drive the green if you are a big hitter. The eighth hole is an 80-foot drop par-3, while the ninth hole has the green uphill one or two clubs worth.

The only major water on the

hole is at the par-3 11th with water down the right hand side, making you play your tee shot over the water.At the end of the day, I think this was my favorite course to play and it gave me a feel of what the pros play on. Even at seven in the morning and with the wet dew on the ground, the greens were fast!

Next we played the Tradition Course, which is a links style course. Being in the northern Michigan area,however,there were still some trees to navigate around.

While this course is probably the least popular of the five atTreetops, it still is a great course to play. It is quite a bit shorter in length than the Premier and is less difficult, although not easy. After the tight fairways at the Premier, there was more space for errant tee shots at the Tradition.

The greens were still pretty fast and the rough was still tough to navigate out of. The front nine has a couple of doglegs and has a couple of holes that are nearly drivable by the longest of hitters.

I am normally a fan of these risk/ reward holes and my favorite is the par-4 13th hole.It plays at 293 from the blue and 275 from the white.

But unlike the couple of reachable holes on the front, this one seems to have more trouble and a more difficult green to navigate, with a bunker 240 out to the left. The course closes with a par-5.

The par-3 seventh hole at Threetops is the hole Lee Trevino aced for $1 million in 2001.

Threetops, the famous par-3 course, was next up for us. Much to my surprise, the course played quite short given the professional event that was played out there.

The only hole over 170 yards from the tips is the third hole, which plays 219 from the back. However, there is a 140-foot drop that makes the hole much shorter. It is spectacular to play. While all were great holes, the seventh hole was my other favorite. It is the hole of Lee Trevino’s ace for $1 million in 2001 and is only 150 yards from the back, despite playing 80 feet downhill. The slope from back to front on the green though makes it tough to putt.

All of the greens proved to be tricky.Not only were they lightning

quick, they were tough to read and if you were stuck on the wrong side of the slope, a three-putt was likely. I definitely don’t think I will play a par-3 course like that one.

We finished off the Signature Course, the most expensive of the courses.The first hole was actually my favorite hole as there was a big drop off the tee on the par-4.

The course seemed to play slightly easier than the Premier, although it was still plenty tough.

The greens always seemed to be tough to get to, especially the ninth hole, where the pin was tucked right behind the bunker. Luckily, I played for the center of the green and it sloped towards the pin. It is one of those courses where you could play it much better with the

experiences.

As was the case with all the courses, there was not much water on the course as only one hole provided the threat. However, the course provided several other challenges along the way. I really enjoyed the 15th and 16th holes as the 15th hole had a very narrow green that was uphill on the par5 and the 16th hole went back downhill off the tee.

Overall each of the courses were unique. I hope someday I will be able to play the Masterpiece as well as it looked awesome as well. Even if you can’t play 63 holes in a day, taking a weekend up to Northern Michigan to play the courses over a two or three day span would be a great investment.

Q&A: Chuck Lorre, John Wells on state of TV High drama, quality impossible when going for quantity

Lorre is currently the sitcom’s reigning king, producing four CBS comedies, including “The Big Bang Theory.” John Wells might have stewarded the last genuine dramatic mega-hit in “ER,” as well as acclaimed series such as “Southland” and “Shameless.”

Both call Warner Bros. home, which was where they convened to discuss the TV business and the writer/producer/showrunner’s lot - including the unique camaraderie of the writers’ room, their discomfort with suits labeling what they do “content,” and a mutual love of the medium behind all those hugs they’ve received (understandably, given their successes) from Warner Bros.

Variety: How do you generally feel about the state of the TV business now?

John Wells: I always say the same thing, which is we just tell stories. The way in which they are distributed changes, but as long as people are interested in hearing stories about their lives and other lives and worlds, for the writers and for the people who are creating this material there are many more opportunities because there are more places to do it and allow you to do it for a much smaller audience.

The thing that’s in peril - and it’s been in peril forever, so I don’t want to overstate it - is the state of what network television’s going to be, which has supported the entire ecosystem forever with syndication. Chuck Lorre: It makes me think of something (producer) Marcy Carsey said to me 20 years ago.

I was developing for them, and I said, “What network would this go on?’” and she said, “What difference does it make? Those are trucks.They bring the product to market.” I always loved that.

They’re just trucks. What’s inside the truck is the only thing that matters.

Variety: We’re also seeing this wave of mergers. As guild members, how much does that concern you?

Wells: I’ve lobbied. I’ve actually testified. I don’t think wildly massive conglomerates - I understand why they want to be big and what the advantages are for them - are an advantage for the viewer and the people making the content. I don’t see how it’s going to be beneficial to anyone other than the larger company to have that kind of control over the means of distribution. It doesn’t lead to better material, which is what we’re always really concerned about.

Lorre: The first thing you learn when you work for a big company like Warner Bros. is synergy’s a myth. Human nature is self-interest and the agendas of these little fiefdoms are doing what they just normally do, which is pursuing what’s good for their careers and their little part of the company.

When I came into this, I had this very naive notion that we’re all in this together, like a big club.

It’s not a big club. It’s medieval is what it is.

Variety: Chuck, in terms of sitcoms, do you feel like the last man standing?

Lorre: No, I really don’t. I was very much influenced by what Phil Rosenthal did, because he brought it back to the basics of

two people talking. When it’s well written, well produced and acted, it’s fascinating. Two people talking on a couch can pull you in.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” did that. Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen sitting on the couch talking about something that was interesting and funny was enough. That brought me back to what I learned on “Roseanne” way back when - 25 years ago - that it’s a play, really.

What we do is putting on a play, except we get do-overs.

Variety: Do you see value in the development process? Or would Wells:Well, I’d always rather just go shoot it, just because it removes a lot of the anxiety in the middle of it. But there’s tremendous value to seeing it and changing it. Even if you just go and shoot it, you’re going to make a number of adjustments based on what you actually see. Once you start something, you have an idea of what it’s going to be and then you see what it actually is, and oftentimes a character changes completely, somebody interacts with someone in a different way, stylistically it changes.

Lorre: But you don’t necessarily know the show until, God, really, episode six, seven, eight, nine, 10. You start to get a sense of what’s the tone, what’s its voice, what’s its comedic rhythm? And the characters do change. You learn how to make them better, but also you learn about the actors’ strengths and write to the strengths.

Pilots are so misleading. If you looked at a pilot for any successful show, go and look at it two years later. You’re looking at a different show because there’s a learning curve, and that involves time, and time is in short supply in a business that’s running scared.

Variety: Does the fact that you’re getting immediate public feedback have any value, or is it something

that you just have to shut out?

Lorre: You have to block it, otherwise you’ve turned over the writing and producing of your show to who? At the end of the day, you put on a show you love and hope people agree with you.

It’s that simple. It’s the only way it can have any integrity.

Wells: It’s a very self-selective group. I pay some attention to it primarily because the younger writers like to come and tell you what they read. But I always say, “Alright, we had 2.5 million viewers this week and you read 140. Is that representative?” Plus a lot of times the reaction is what you want it to be, even if it seems negative, like,“Oh my God, I can’t believe they did that” and “I hate them for doing that.”

Variety: Has determining what you made on a show become an issue?

Wells: Some of the things that were put in place during the strike have been very helpful in figuring some of that out. But the reality is the way in which shows are valued changes because the audiences are smaller. It’s a matter of people making less money overall but more people are working. So that’s been the tradeoff.

Lorre: The old model was producing 100 episodes and then selling it to syndication. Quantity drove business models. It’s not necessarily the most creative approach. Would you want to make 100 episodes of “True Detective?” It’s almost impossible to sustain that level of drama and quality when you’re going for quantity.

Variety: If you had to pick one advantage cable has, what is the most important?

Wells: What makes the most difference in dramatic television is time and money. You look at a wonderful show like “Game of Thrones,” they’re shooting 16, 18, 20 days.“The Good Wife” has got to do 22 episodes and they have to do it well, which they do, but they’re doing those in eight days. There’s a huge difference in what the budget is, but also the amount of time you have to kind of handcraft the product.

So the time and the money are connected.

Lorre: A couple of years ago I ran into Larry David and I said, “What’s it like doing 10 as opposed to 24?” and he goes, “Same amount of time.”

July Fourth Celebration and Fireworks. The celebration kicks off at 4 p.m. with food vendors, free kids crafts, a petting zoo, performances by the Westmont Community Band and the Grand Avenue Big Band, bingo, and more. Residents are invited to join the fun with food, games, beer and live music, and stay for the Fireworks Spectacular at 9:30 p.m.

“Because it’s the 15th year of fireworks at Ty Warner Park, our fireworks presentation is going

to be bigger than ever,” Park District President Diane Main said in a statement. “We hope everyone can come out and enjoy this incredible community event.”

In addition to celebrating the nation’s birthday, the village of Woodridge will commemorate two additional anniversaries. This year, the village of Woodridge turns 55 and the Woodridge Park District is celebrating its 45th anniversary. A Fourth of July Picnic will be held from 11

a.m. to 3 p.m. at Castaldo Park in Woodridge.

The celebration will include an anniversary giveaway, a chance to win an anniversary prize basket, a performance by The Music Company, a birds of prey show, and free pony and train rides for the small children. Hot dogs, brats, corn on the cob, chips, pop, water, and ice cream treats will be available for a nominal charge, and beer is available for adults.

The village of Downers Grove and Woodridge will partner with

the City of Darien this year for their annual fireworks show. The fireworks show will take place at approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Zigfield Troy Golf Course, 1535 75th St. The best view of the fireworks will be from the parking lots along 75th Street.
