Festivalgoers have crazy good time during annual Taste of Westmont

Area residents headed to downtown Westmont this past weekend for a taste of summer during the village’s annual summer fest and carnival.

Running along Cass Avenue from Chicago to Burlington, Taste of Westmont had something for everyone July 7-10. Hosted by Westmont Special events, the fest featured live entertainment, dozens of food vendors and business booths, carnival rides and games, and even a bingo tent.

McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, the famous

Blues musician, called Westmont his home from 1973 until his death in 1983. Taste of Westmont honors him each year by hosting Blues artists on the last day of the festival.

It wasn’t all the Blues, however.

Festivalgoers were treated to a variety of additional music acts throughout the weekend, including Derringer & Rye, Spoken Four and Lava Rock.

Families enjoyed a “Kidzapalooza”

event on the opening night of the festival. Kidzapalooza included an all-night special on carnival rides, a car show and a Battle of the Bands.

For those craving food, Tropical Sno, Taco Express, China Chef, Neat Kitchen+Bar, and several other restaurants were on hand. Sponsors for the event included Hilton, Waste Management, Uncle Bub’s, Westmont Park District and Uncle Jon’s Music.

Roadway, watermain projects set for Downers Grove Project will include resurfacing 15 road segments

At its July 5 meeting, the Downers Grove Village Council heard a first reading of a motion to

award a contract for its 2016 street resurfacing project.

The contract would be awarded to Geneva Construction Company for about $1.9 million. According to board documents, the money for the project comes from the capital fund and the motor fuel tax fund.

The project will include the resurfacing of segments of 15 roads including Chicago Avenue, Cornell Avenue, Downers Drive, Lee Avenue and Grant Street.

According to the village the point of the project is to keep the streets

in “good, maintainable condition.”

The council also discussed a bid for watermain improvements. The village has budgeted $911,000 in the water fund for this project.

Trine Construction Corp. is set to receive the bid of $762,694.50.

Nan Newlon, director of public works, said the project will include the installation of 2,300 feet of watermain and replacement of 43 residential water services.

Three streets will be impacted by the project, including Grant Street, Indianapolis and Lincoln.

County issues guidebook on preventing residential flood Solutions range from installing overhead sewer systems to nature-based solutions DuPage County Stormwater Management recently released a flood-proofing guidebook intended to help homeowners resolve common localized flooding issues from both underground and overland sources.

Jim Zay, stormwater management committee chairman for the county, said resident feedback at county meetings and events served as the catalyst for developing the guidebook.

“Time and time again, residents ask us how they can protect themselves from flooding, particularly where large-scale infrastructure interventions are not an option,” Zay said.

Developed in partnership with Bluestem Communications, the guidebook helps homeowners identify the source of their flooding, as well as various ways to combat this flooding.

Depending on the type of flooding incurred, solutions range from installing overhead sewer systems to nature-based solutions that homeowners can tackle

themselves. The guidebook also includes resources for during and after a flood.

To better understand these flooding issues, DuPage County and Bluestem polled residents who frequently experience varying types of flooding on their property. Common issues and concerns were compiled, and experts were then consulted to formulate effective and simple actions homeowners could take to reduce flooding.

“This guidebook is brief but thorough, making it both convenient and comprehensive for residents,” Zay said. “We’re all in this together, and this is another tool to alleviate flooding issues in DuPage County.”

Village updates plans for police station upgrades Cost of project is estimated to be between $13.4 million and $15.6 million The village of Downers Grove is in the process of working out the specifics of a plan to upgrade its police station, with the addition of between 11,500 and 13,200 square feet expected.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be between $13.4

million and $15.6 million.

However, since the village is pursuing membership in DuPage County’s dispatch service, the need for a physical dispatch center in the police station was eliminated.

According to board documents, the addition is now sized at 11,000 square feet and the total cost will drop by $1 million to $1.5 million.

Deputy Village Manager Michael Baker said this would result in lower annual debt service payments between $70,000 and $105,000.

Downers Grove to join county dispatch, information systems

Downers Grove is moving forward with participation in the DuPage County Justice Information System.

A letter of intent will be sent to DuJIS, the village said. The new system will reduce annual costs for the village by $65,000, according to board documents.

During the July 5 Downers Grove Village Council meeting, Chief of Police Kurt Bluder said the new system will improve service levels. The village currently owns and operates its own system, but Bluder said the system is scheduled for replacement.

The cost of participating in DuJIS is estimated at $120,000 per year.

According to board documents, the annual cost of maintaining the village’s current system would cost $185,000 annually over the next five years. The new dispatch system would start in summer 2017.

In conjunction with the new system, the village is planning on using DU-COMM, DuPage County’s dispatch service.

Downers Grove currently operates dispatch services through its Village Operations Center, but due to changes in state law, it is no longer feasible to do that. The annual cost of DU-COMM will be $1.18 million.

Currently, the village spends $1.06 million for its current operations, but the net cost includes annual revenue from the village of Westmont, which utilized

Downers Grove dispatch services.

Bluder said DU-COMM provides the same or enhanced level of service for police dispatching services, fire/EMS dispatching services, fire alarm monitoring, major incident responses, severe weather alerts and overnight street parking permission.

However, the village will receive reduced service levels for public works dispatching, police station after hours lobby reception, severe weather incident tracking, LEADs services and video monitor viewing.

According to board documents, the village will assign existing staff members to the additional tasks of those services. However, it will accept the reduced levels for police station after hours lobby reception.

As has been widely reported, the “leave” win means that the British government must invoke Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, which outlines the legal process by which a state can withdraw from the EU. But when will that happen?

Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he would step down in October and suggested that the next prime minister should initiate the Article 50 process. Once it does, the withdrawal negotiations would begin.

At a minimum, it would take two years, but that time frame could be extended

by unanimous agreement among the remaining 27 member nations. During the process, the U.K. would obey EU treaties and laws, but not take part in any decision-making.

The biggest issue is how trade would be handled between the EU and the rest of the world. There are three exit options, based on current models. The first is total exit, under which the U.K. leaves the EU and does not continue to benefit from any part of the single market. Then there is the Norwegian model, whereby the U.K. would leave the EU but join the European Economic Area. Finally, there is the Swiss model, which would mean the U.K. leaves the EU and does not join the EEA but enters various bilateral agreements with the EU to obtain access to the market in specific sectors, rather

Many wondered what Downers Grove North star athlete Jaida Green would do for an encore her senior year.

The Penn State-bound basketball player and 2015 Voyager Media Female Multisport Athlete of the Year had one more basketball season to showcase her talent and was competing in the high jump for the second year.

All she did was improve upon her previous year in both sports, averaging 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and won a state high jump title.

For her accomplishments, Green is the repeat winner of the Voyager Media Female Multisport Athlete of the Year.

In basketball, not only did Green showcase herself on offense or on the boards, she was a dominant defensive player as well with her length. She finished the year with 54 steals and 63 blocks, a rare feat to be dominant in both defensive statistics.

She then proved her athletic prowess by high jumping her way to a state title, jumping 5-feet, 7-inches, after placing third last year with a jump of 5-6.

It is only the second year she came out for track and field.

Some may say there are many

similarities between the two sports, but the technicality of the high jump makes it quite different.

Her success in the sport will only help her when playing for Penn State in the fall.

“I think the high jump is so different from basketball,” Green said. “In basketball, you are just refining your skills. In high jump, I really knew nothing so it was fun to come out and learn a new sport. Being able to calm your nerves in the high jump can help me transfer it to basketball, too.”

The rest of the top multisport athletes, by zone, are:

Brooklyn BAcHmAnn, Joliet/shoreWooD Minooka junior was a rare three-sport athlete and excelled in all three of them.

In the spring, she was a state qualifier in the pole vault, clearing 10-feet in the Friday preliminaries.

In the winter, Bachmann was the floor leader of the Indians from the point guard position and led the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game. She also shot 73 percent from the foul and had 83 assists.

Illinois Women’s Open back at renovated Mistwood Pettersen looks to defend title at IWO

The 2016 Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open returns to Mistwood Golf Club Monday, July 18.

While the course will be the same as last year, competitors will be welcomed by a new clubhouse this year after the final stage of the remodeling project was completed.

The tournament is a 54hole stroke play event that begins Monday and concludes Wednesday. There is a cut after

two rounds where around the top 40 percent and ties qualify for the final day.

The tournament is open to all female professionals and all female amateurs with a USGA Handicap Index of 15.0 or less.

They must also be 17 years of age by time of tee off.

However, there are special exemptions and last year a special exemption, Madasyn Pettersen, took home first place.

If she returns again this year it will be way of another special exemption as she will be just 16 years old.

The Rockford phenom shot a

6-under par 66 in the final round last year to win by five strokes and become the youngest winner in event history. She also went on to win the Class AA IHSA state title in the fall with an even par tournament score.

She will look to become the first repeat winner since 2009 when Michigan State golfer Aimee Neff defended her title.

Chelsea Harris and Brooke Farrell tied for second last year in the IWO. Kerry Postillion is the only player to win three tournament titles.

DeJoria paves own path

When race fans watched female drivers like Courtney and Brittany Force scream down the pavement at Joliet’s Route 66 Raceway at the NHRA Nationals, there is no surprise that the two are in the sport, because after all, they are the daughters of John Force, an NHRA legend and they just joined the family business.

The plan for Alexis DeJoria was also to join the family business – her father is John Paul DeJoria – the billionaire co-founder of Paul Mitchell and majority owner of Patron Spirits – but at age 16 DeJoria found a passion to drive.

“I worked for the family business right out of high school for four years and that was the initial plan,” she said.

“But when I was 16 I went to a drag race for the first time – the Winternationals in Pomona – and I just fell in love with the cars and it was something that was just in the back of my mind that someday I have something I really want to do. I have no family that has raced, so for me to do something like this is completely out of left field. I had no experience whatsoever except for the hot rods we raced around when I was a teenager in high school and I think that was where the love of motorsports and American hot rods came into play.

“After four years, I was so obsessed with the sport and I really wanted to give it a try. I went to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School and got licensed and found an old, used Super Gas Corvette bracket car that was for sale and basically used all my savings to buy that car and start a little team. It was basically just me and a family friend that could drive a big rig and kind of work on a car. I just threw myself into the mix and tried to make it happen and move up through the ranks and now I am exactly where I wanted to be. I welcome the challenge. These cars are intense. You are never just taking a ride. You are always in control of that car.”

While many may assume the road was easy for DeJoria and

that her father simply wrote a check and got her into a car – that couldn’t be further from the truth.

DeJoria started at the bottom and worked her way into the driver she is today.

“My dad didn’t come from a successful family as far as finances go. My grandparents came over on a boat – one from Italy and one from Greece when they were like 12 and 13 – so they had to work really, really hard just to put food on the table and clothes on their backs,” she said.

“My dad came from very hard means and he had to work his butt off and that is the kind of strong work ethic that he instilled in all of his children. This is what my passion is. My father’s passions are his companies that he has built from the ground up.”

As she was working her way through the ranks, DeJoria said that she never considered being female to be an obstacle for her to reach her dreams.

“It was not like I wanted to be a football player,” she said. “These cars don’t know male from female – it is not like basketball or baseball where you have to separate the two. In these cars, it is everybody’s game out here.

At the time I started, there were a few females racing in the pro ranks that I followed very closely and so when I came in it wasn’t a shock. It was more like ‘here’s another one, let’s see what she can do.’ But, the pressure is on.

You do feel more pressure than if a guy is starting out in the league because you have more eyes on you.”

Of all the motorsports circuits, the NHRA has by far the most female drivers and several of them are among the sport’s elite drivers.

“NASCAR and IndyCar didn’t have someone like Shirley Muldowney,” DeJoria said. “They didn’t have a female that came in and did really well and won championships. If NASCAR had a girl like that, you would see a lot more than Danica Patrick driving those. IndyCar has had a few females and that is probably next in line – but it is all about the women that paved the way before us. And now, about 40

In 2014, her third season in a Funny Car, DeJoria became the first woman ever to make a sub-four second run, posting a 3.997-second ET at the same NHRA Winternationals in Pomona where she saw her first race.

At the next race, DeJoria earned her first Funny Car win and then grabbed her second category win in Las Vegas later that year.

Her third career win came in September of 2014 at the 60th

U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

Last season, DeJoria did not earn a win, but did end up in the top 10 in the points standing and grabbed her first win this season in Las Vegas in April.

“Our car is a lot better this year, we have new chassis this year and they are more consistent and we are able to apply power where we need it and it has been working out really well for us,” she said. “There have been some changes performance wise to the funny car class in general – headers, injectors, fuel systems, changes in how we run the clutch, just a number

of things that have added more horsepower and more thrust. We are all running record numbers.

Every time we go to a track this year, we are breaking the track record for sure and sometimes the world records are being broken as well and everyone is resetting their own records. It has been incredible thus far this year and we are only about half way done, so there is a lot more to do.”

That second win will have to wait at least a couple more weeks, as she was eliminated by Robert Hight in the second round of Sunday’s finals in Joliet.

When you kick things into overdrive like you folks have done, two things have happened. One, you’ve extended the time that you’re going to be supporting the kids financially.

Two, you’ve got a lot of baby birds to feed and clothe. Unless you have an astronomical income, it slows down the process of hitting financial goals like getting out of debt, because you’ve got a drain on the math side of things. It’s a wonderful drain; it’s a glorious drain; but mathematically speaking where

the money is concerned, it’s still a drain.

You really don’t have any choice but to do a budget. Having seven kids doesn’t give you an excuse to live out of control or mean that living out of control without a plan is the definition of success.

You’ve got to set more emergency categories aside in your budget.

You’ve got to budget heavier for food, medical, transportation and things like that, because you’ve

got more things pulling at you — and your money!

Even a coordinated central bank intervention could not fight off the power that a fraying EU might create throughout the world.

Very few traders, economists or bankers thought that BREXIT would occur; as a result, they are still in a bit of shock. The short, intermediate and long-term implications of Brexit are simply unknowable at this point. Like the weather in London, it looks we will be forced to live with lots of clouds, occasional storms and, hopefully, an occasional ray of sunshine.
