Cuts to Meals on Wheels could impact county

‘It would be devastating not only for Downers Grove, but also the county’

The impact of federal and state cuts to Meals on Wheels, if passed, could be devastating, officials told the Bugle.

President Donald Trump presented a proposed budget in May that could cut spending toward the program for seniors; and it could bring concerns to local social services already losing state funding.

While a president’s budget will typically require review by Congress, the proposal as submitted recently intends to highlight the Trump administration’s agenda and how it will prioritize the country’s needs.

“It would be devastating not only for Downers Grove, but also the county, the state and the country,” said Mary Lynn Krolak, executive director of DuPage County Senior Citizens Council. “The levels of funding had flat-lined the last 15

years. The amount stays the same, though costs increase. If funds were cut, it would devastate us. We are hoping for no cuts to the [U.S.] Department of Health and Human Services.”

Downers Grove Township Supervisor Mark Thoman agreed.

“It would have an impact,” he said. “Meals on Wheels makes deliveries to over 380 residents [in Downers Grove Township.] Each stop consists of more than one resident.”

The program, however, does more than deliver meals, Thoman said. A stable of volunteers work to obtain physical and mental assessments of the seniors they serve, as well as an assessment of the household.

“They will make suggestions if they note any issues,” Thoman said. “They can help connect them with services.”

This budget cycle, the State of Illinois shorted the Township by more than $210,000, Thoman said.

“That’s a lot of money to feed senior citizens and keep them in their homes,” he said. “The most effective way to serve them is to keep seniors at home.”

Funding to support Meals on Wheels is all done based on population for seniors through the Department of Health and Human Services, and multiple sources are employed through governmental bodies, agencies and fundraising efforts. Typically, funds are extended to the states through the county, and they are distributed in the amount of $25,000 per township in DuPage County.

To fill the gap, some governmental bodies in the county have sought to provide funding.

Thoman said Downers Grove Township recognizes the value and benefit of the services DuPage County Senior Services Council provides to residents.

“The trustees recently approved [an allotment] supporting the Meals on Wheels program to the $25,000 level with funds they can use to keep them going,” Thoman said.

DuPage County Senior Services Council serves 4,000 residents throughout the county.

Krolak wanted to thank governmental bodies, like Downers Grove Township, for supporting Meals on Wheels.

“I am appreciative of the donation Downers Grove Township gave to support us,” she said. “It was $25,000. We appreciate partnerships to support costs to serve

seniors. It is a community collaboration—a great partnership. I wish other townships would do the same.”

Krolak added, “The relationship with municipalities and townships

are more critical than ever.”

Krolak gave thanks to legislators for taking an active in role in the effort to secure funding to support Meals on Wheels and urged elected officials to pass a State budget.

Students selected for all-state theatre production Six District 99 students were chosen by competitive audition by the Illinois High School Theatre Festival to be part of the 2018 All-State production of the new broadway musical, “Big Fish.”

The All-State cast, crew, and pit orchestra are comprised of top student performers, musicians, and technicians from across Illinois.

The District 99 students were chosen from 345 students across the state who chose to audition; 107 students were selected from 57 different high schools for the final production company.

“If there was ever a doubt that District 99 is a powerhouse in fine and performing arts, the fact that our students are so well represented for this state production removes that doubt,” says Dr. Hank Thiele, District 99 superintendent.

“We are incredibly proud of our talented students, and we can’t wait to see the show next January.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to collaborate creatively with some of the best talent in the state,” says Demetrios Pappageorge, English and Theatre teacher at DGN and former executive director of IHSTF. Nathaniel Haywood, an English teacher at DGS, is the current executive director of IHSTF. Produced by the Illinois Theatre Association, the Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF) is the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival in the world.

The three-day Festival takes place every year in early January and switches locations between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University. Over 4,000 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors, and volunteers come together to put on over 25 different high school productions and over 150 workshops at the festival.

Our Brains and (Dis)organization Language is important in considering whole person, not defining by their limitations I belong to a terrific organization called the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD), whose conferences and classes have taught me a great deal about how our brains work, especially when it comes to organization (and disorganization). This month I’m sharing a brief overview of what I’ve learned about several brain-based issues that may offer insight on why you may find getting and staying organized more difficult than you think it should be. I’ve indicated the presenter whose wisdom I’m sharing.

You’ll notice I use “people first” language – e.g., rather than referring to someone as a hoarder, I refer to someone who hoards. This language is an important way of considering the whole person, rather than just defining him or her by their limitations.

ADHD Our brains are a rain forest of diversity: differences among brains are as enriching—and essential—as differences among plants and animals. People with ADHD are hunters in a farmer’s world – they pay attention to distractions to facilitate survival in the wild. Instead of celebrating the natural diversity inherent in human brains, too often we diagnose and medicate those differences. Rather than focusing on the limitations of peo-

By Sue Becker ple with ADHD, think of everyone in the world as being one of hundreds of varieties of flowers that make for a beautiful field of flowers. If you have to function in an environment that isn’t well-suited to the way your brain thinks, make positive environmental modifications that will help you be more successful. (Dr. Thomas Armstrong of The American Institute for Learning and Human Development) HOARDING The daughter of a woman with hoarding disorder talked about how, when someone in the home hoards, hoarding defines the family culture. Objects, rather than family members, become the focus of the person who hoards.

People who hoard are stimulated by an object’s smallest detail, which triggers creativity and generates unessential goals (e.g., “these margarine tubs will come in handy when I work on my craft projects”). These goals support the object’s value and override what one might otherwise view as reasonable decisions about letting go of the objects. People who hoard tend to procrastinate about the projects they intend to undertake with those objects because of perfection-

ism (it’s better not to do anything than do it imperfectly) and doubt (it’s too uncomfortable to make a bad decision about what to let go of so I’ll keep all of it). This procrastination leads to the hoard getting larger – in essence the home is filled with intentions. The potential of the children often gets buried in hoarded homes. There is an online support community for children of hoarders: ChildrenOfHoarders.com. (Dr. Suzanne Chabaud of the OCD Institute of Greater New Orleans) STRESS Chronic stress actually shrinks the brain and is the number one killer in America. Stress has more to do with a person’s genetic “code” than with his or her circumstances. It is possible to change your brain’s propensity to be stressed by shifting the brain’s autopilot from stressed and anxious to peaceful. You can train your mind to change your brain to generate more joy in your work, more order in your life, more love in your relationships and more spring in your step. Attitude is the thing that makes you most powerful psychologically. Reducing stress is not about a to-do list, it’s more about the to-be list. The here and now is the one place where we don’t have stress – it’s thinking about the past and the future that causes stress. However, 85 percent of what we worry about ain’t gonna happen – breathe in, breathe out and move on. Miller, Bachmann lead nominees

Every season, the Voyager Media area has several amazing athletes in many sports, but only a select few can compete at a high level in multiple sports – of those, Voyager Media selects one male and one female from each of its five zones as nominees for the Voyager Media Multisport Athlete of the Year.

Of the five males and five females – one of each are the selected as the winners of the AOY title.

This year’s overall winners are: FEMALE: BROOKLYN BACHMANN - JOLIET/ SENTINEL ZONE Three-sport superstar from Minooka, Bachmann wins her second-straight Athlete of the Year honor.

This season, she averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds on the basketball court. She ended her career as the all-time leader in points in school history with 1,523.

A Voyager Media All-Area team member, she was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention. She will continue her basketball career at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

On the volleyball court, the senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to

go with 43 blocks for the Indians.

She helped Minooka reach the state finals, where it battled for a title and fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“Brooklyn was a fierce leader on the court and we will very much miss her,” said Minooka volleyball coach Carrie Prosek.

“She would dive through bleachers to keep that ball alive for our offense to hit the ball. She could push the ball to the pin no matter where she was and that is truly what kept us alive when things were off. She took ahold of this young team and taught them how to be confident and want to win.”

In the spring, Bachmann was again a state qualifier in the Class 3A pole vault.

MALE: BRADY MILLER – PLAINFIELD ZONE The Plainfield North junior had a stellar season for the Tigers in three sports.

On the football field, Miller quarterbacked the Tigers to the IHSA Class 7A state final game – ultimately placing second.

On the season he completed 151-of-259 passes for 1,998 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed 39 times for 279 yards and a pair of scores.

During the winter, Miller was one of the veterans leading the North basketball team.

Then, in the spring, he again set his sights on a state run again with the North baseball team.

On the season on the mound, Miller had a team-high 60 innings pitched with a 4-3 record and a 1.40 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, while posting 68 strikeouts. He was an AllSPC¬ selection.

At the plate, he hit .333 with a .393 on base percentage and a .547 slugging percentage. He has 39 hits with six home runs, with 36 RBI and scored 25 runs.

Miller was a Voyager Media AllArea selection in both football and baseball.

DOWNERS GROVE ZONE FEMALE: EMMA MORAVEC The argument can be made

that a runner is a runner and just because someone runs distance races in cross country and track they are not a multi-sport athlete.

But for Downers Grove North’s Emma Moravec, she is not running the distance races in both.

In track, the senior placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 15.08.

She also teamed with Gina Kowalewicz, Rachel Sprague and Kimberly Brent in the 4x400 relay to place fourth in 3:56.90.

In cross country, Moravec was the lone Trojan to qualify for the state finals this season, placing in the top half of the field in the 3.1 mile course at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

MALE: MARTY DOSEN The Benet two-sporter helped Benet come within striking distance of the state finals in two different sports.

In football, the running back posted a combined yardage of nearly 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for more than 900 yards and 10 scores.

With his help, the Redwings fell in the Class 7A semifinals to eventual state champion East St. Louis. In baseball, the Voyager Media All-Area Team member batted .358 and drove in 32 runners. He had five home runs and 14 extra base hits on the season as Benet fell in the sectional final.

DEAR DAVE, My dad wants me to buy a house on a 30-year loan for him and my mom in my name, and let them make the payments. I’m 24 years old and have a good credit score and a nice apartment, but my job depends largely on how the oil industry is doing. My dad filed bankruptcy nine years ago, and he’s already $150,000 in debt again, so he’s never been very responsible with money. I think this would spell big trouble for me, but I’m sure he will be mad if I say no. What are your thoughts?

EMMANUEL DEAR EMMANUEL, Yeah, I think doing something like this would spell big trouble for you. If your dad is irresponsible with money — especially to the point of having to file bankruptcy — what makes you think he’ll make these house payments on time?

I know this would be an uncomfortable conversation to have with your dad, but you need to brace yourself and just do it. Be respectful

and explain exactly why you won’t do this. Think about it, Emmanuel.

When he doesn’t pay the bill on time, it’s going to screw up your credit score. And when you get ready to buy a house, guess what?

You’re going to have trouble qualifying because you already own a house. Most people don’t make enough money to qualify to buy two homes.

Basically, your dad is asking you to not buy a house so they can have one. I can’t tell you how to make your dad okay with saying no to this, but I can tell you that your answer should be no. Let him and your mom know that you love them both, but this is something you just can’t do.

EXAMINE AND REPLACE EQUIPMENT IF NECESSARY The right equipment can protect kids from injury and help them realize their full athletic potential. But damaged or outdated equipment can increase kids’ risk of injury. Examine kids’ equipment long before fall sports season begins so you have time to bargain hunt should anything need to be replaced.

SCHEDULE A PHYSICAL FOR YOUR CHILD Many school districts mandate that athletes receive and pass physicals before they can compete. Speak with the athletic director

The physical will need to be conducted by a predetermined date, but you may also need the physical to be conducted after a certain date for it to be considered valid. Summer vacation may be the only extended period all year that youngsters’ bodies get to heal. GRADUALLY GET BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS While rest gives kids’ bodies a chance to heal and develop, it’s important that young athletes stay in shape over the summer. As the fall sports season draws near, help kids gradually get back in the swing of things.
