Local WWII veteran ‘just lucky to be alive’

After surviving the kamikaze attacks while on the USS Franklin, David Baruch reflects on what Independence Day really means to him BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com

David Baruch is not your everyday veteran. At the age of 17, he enlisted to join the Navy in World War II, and was stationed aboard the USS Franklin CV-13 aircraft carrier alongside 3,500 men. Before joining the Navy, Baruch worked as a runner for the New York Times newspaper. “At that time they were called runners which is what I would do,” Baruch said. “After someone would write up the story, we would then run the story to the editor.” When making the decision to enlist, the thought of seeing the world was one of the main reasons Baruch wanted to take a new journey in life. Being sent to San Diego after basic training, Baruch was enamored at being stationed on the USS Franklin. “This ship was three football fields long and four stories high,” Baruch said. “I thought at the time that it was a dream ship to be on.” In March of 1944, Baruch and the entire crew of the Franklin were out in the Pacific for around a year in the midst of World War II. On March 19, 1945, the United States, USS Franklin, Baruch and

Before dawn, the Franklin, which had maneuvered to within 50 miles of the Japanese mainland, closer than any other U.S. carrier during the war, launched a fighter sweep against Honsh and later a strike against shipping in Kobe Harbor. The Franklin crew had been called to battle stations twelve times within six hours that night and commanding officer Leslie Gehres downgraded the alert status to Condition III, allowing his men freedom to eat or sleep, although gunnery crews remained at their stations. Baruch was at the bottom part of the ship where he then describes everything as going “very quiet”.

fishing at “Discover Mayslake” on Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook. The free, all-ages open house will offer short meditation walks and an outdoor stretching session to help spotlight programs and events offered throughout the year at the 87-acre estate, which is home to the 1920s Tudor Revivalstyle Mayslake Hall, a national historic landmark. Three Mayslake regulars will perform during the event, Sinfonietta Bel Canto at noon; Acappellago at 1 p.m.; and First Folio Theatre — Mayslake’s resident theater company — at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

sky high,” Baruch said. While treading water, a pilot, who had been blown off the flight deck and was standing on a piece of an airplane, called to Baruch. After the pilot pulled Baruch up out of the water, he said he only said one thing. “The pilot looks at me and goes, where is your life jacket?” Baruch said. “I started laughing.” The two men floated west, with the pilot severely injured. Baruch had to navigate the makeshift raft alone, trying to keep them both afloat. They were eventually rescued by a raft and brought aboard by the USS Marshall. “I was so glad we found that raft and someone reached down to pull us up because I didn’t have any energy or strength left to do it,” Baruch said. The bombing of the USS Franklin makes the ship, the most heavily damaged ship ever without sinking, however 920 men died and more than 250 were injured. With Independence Day celebrated last week, Baruch knows how lucky he is to still be alive, and he doesn’t take that for granted. He is part of only three percent of the 16 million World War II veterans who are still alive today. “I could have been one of the many ones who were not lucky and didn’t make it out alive,” Baruch said. “I’m not sure why, what reason or if I will ever know, I just know I’m lucky to still be here and tell the story.”

Visitors can take in the beauty of Mayslake on naturalist-led hikes through the forest preserve’s highquality prairie, oak savanna and woodland and on garden walks led by volunteers who care for the estate’s heritage garden. They can stop by exploration stations featuring bugs, participate in a scavenger hunt, or try archery and fishing with Forest Preserve District rangers. Kayaking will also be available for a fee. “Discover Mayslake is a great celebration and showcase of all that Mayslake has to offer during the year and the many ways we connect people to nature through the arts and history,” said Janneke Fowers, the District’s cultural education manager.

DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey

Help friend with what he needs, not what he wants Q. I’m on Baby Step 2 of your plan, and I’ll be debt-free except for my home by the end of the year. I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out of hand with his requests for money. A. I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt and you simply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you participate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits. Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no. Let your friend know how hard you’re working to get your finances in order and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken so far, and let him know he could be successful doing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s willing to accept this kind of help. In some cases, helping someone means offering what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really helping someone who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash.

GLVC sponsors bowling along with lacrosse beginning this season

A day after revealing women’s lacrosse as its 23rd sponsored sport, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Wednesday it will begin sponsoring women’s bowling as its 24th sport for the upcoming year. The inaugural season of GLVC women’s bowling will feature seven institutions, including full-time league members Drury University, Lewis University, Maryville University and McKendree University, as well as associate members University of Central Missouri, Lincoln University and Upper Iowa University. Five of the seven aforementioned programs – Central Missouri, Drury, Lincoln, Maryville and McKendree – competed under the banner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) over the course of the last three seasons. McKendree has reached the final match of the Intercollegiate

Team Championship in each of the past three seasons. Under the direction of head coach Shannon O’Keefe, the Bearcats earned the national title in 2017, scored a runner-up finish in 2018, and was edged 3-2 in the 2019 title match by Robert Morris University (Ill.) this past April. One month prior to nationals, McKendree swept Central Missouri 4-0 to claim its second consecutive MIAA Championship.

It was a successful first season for the Lewis Flyers as they finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked No. 37 in the NCAA RPI, brought home two runner-up trophies from NCAA tournaments and made match play at a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) tournament. Head coach Scott Taylor enters his second season directing the Flyers. Larry Hughes has served as the

head coach at Drury for all four years of the program history, including the last three under the NCAA banner. He guided the Panthers to third place at the MIAA Championships in 2017, followed by a pair of fourth-place results the past two seasons. Drury will compete in the GLVC’s inaugural season in memory of teammate Caroline Conrad, who tragically passed away in an auto accident last week. All seven programs will advance to the inaugural GLVC Bowling

Championship, which will take place at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, Illinois, March 21-22, 2020. In addition, Quincy University announced last month it will add both men’s and women’s bowling beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. For more information on GLVC women’s bowling, stay tuned online at GLVCsports.com and @ GLVCsports (#GLVCwbowl) on Twitter throughout the year.
