Westmont improves Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair Event held weekly June through August By Bugle staff Promising to be bigger and better than years past, Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair kicked off its 2016 season firing on all cylinders. More than 2,000 people came out to see approximately 250 classic cars during the June 2 opening night of the 13-week event series, according to Larry McIntyre, communications director for the village of Westmont. Westmont Special Events Corporation, which plans and organizes the weekly affair, made the decision in 2013 to combine its Cruisin’ Nights and fresh marketplace into a single event – the Westmont Street Fair. Since then, the summer series has become a favorite of residents. “This event has tripled in size over the last few years,” said Kristina Kaniauskaite, office manager at WSEC. “This year, we will have a lot of car clubs coming out, so we’re
expecting to have another recordbreaking year.” Held each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. June through August, the organizers of Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair said the event is designed to provide fun for everyone, regardless of age. Live bands, children’s activities, food and business specials, and hundreds of classic cars are just some of the treats that await attendees each week. Live music will be featured at various locations throughout the event on different nights, including 25 N. Cass, across from the Knights of Columbus; NEAT Kitchen + Bar, 246 N. Cass; and J. Fleming’s Absolutely Delicious, 18 N. Cass. There will be a variety of kids activities including art project by No Corner Suns and the Westmont Public Library, as well as kids face painting. Additionally, the open market makes variety of items, including produce and artistic and craft items, available to patrons for purchase. The WSEC said it adjusted its vendor selection process in 2016

Illinois Tollway begins Veterans Memorial widening project in Woodridge Temporary, overnight lane closures scheduled on southbound I-355 Work to prepare for the start of the Veterans Memorial Tollway Roadway Widening Project in Woodridge began last week, with overnight lane closures in the southbound lanes between 63rd Street and 83rd Street. To help provide congestion relief, the Illinois Tollway is widening a 1-mile section of southbound I-355 between 71st and 75th streets. Ramps to and from the south are being realigned to match the new mainline configuration. On southbound I-355, one left lane was scheduled to close at 9 p.m. June 2 for shoulder work to prepare for a traffic shift. The lane
will reopen each morning by 5 a.m. in advance of the morning rush hour, according to the Illinois Tollway. This work is expected to last until mid-June. Once the preparation work is complete, three lanes of traffic are scheduled to be shifted to the left with a work zone on the right to begin roadway widening work. Ramps at 71st Street and 75th Street will remain open at all times. The I-355 roadway widening project will add a new lane on southbound I-355 from 71st Street to just beyond 75th Street to provide four lanes in each direction. Currently, the fourth southbound
lane becomes an exit lane for 75th Street and does not resume until after the entrance ramp from 75th Street. In addition, the 75th Street ramps to and from southbound I-355 will be reconstructed to better align with the new four-lane roadway. Up to 62,600 vehicles per day use this stretch of road, according to the Illinois Tollway. The project is being coordinated with DuPage County, along with local municipalities and police and fire departments. Construction information about the Veterans Memorial Tollway Roadway Widening Project is available in the “Projects by Roadway” section in the Construction/Planning section on the Tollway’s website, www. illinoistollway.com.

County eliminates water commission’s quarter-cent sales tax Tax was eliminated because commission’s move to a selfsustaining utility DuPage County’s sales tax has dropped by a quarter-cent after the elimination of a tax collected by the DuPage Water Commission, according to a news release from the DuPage County Board. Officials said the sales tax was eliminated because of the water commission’s move to a selfsustaining utility. The county
added that the drop in sales tax would save DuPage County consumers $36 million annually. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, DuPage Water Commission Chairman Jim Zay and members of the county board celebrated the sales tax decline at the May 24 county board meeting. In addition to the sales tax reduction, the commission lowered its water rates by 1 percent for 2016-17, which took effect May 1. The commission paid back $70 million in bonds 18 months early, which saved taxpayers $10 million in interest payments, according to the county.

“First things first” – we’ve all heard the saying, but how often do we put it into practice as we move through our day? Although my most productive and successful days are those on which I follow this advice, I sometimes (OK, often) find myself doing easy, fun or less important stuff before I get around to working on the things I “should” be working on. That approach can be fine occasionally, especially on the weekend when I want to spend more time playing than working. However, on “work” days, it can be a dangerous habit that can lead to missed deadlines and missed opportunities. So, dear reader, for your benefit, as well as mine, here are some reminders on how to help yourself be more successful by doing first things first!

sectional CHAMPS Downers Grove South wins third sectional title in four years

For the third time in the last four years, the Downers Grove South softball team claimed the sectional title. This time, using a huge final two innings to earn a 13-3, six inning win over Bolingbrook. The Mustangs opened the scoring with a two-run first inning that was interrupted by a 20 minute rain delay. Bolingbrook would battle back and hold a brief 3-2 lead. The game was knotted at 3-3 after a Megan LoBianco home run to left field drew South even. The Mustangs would get three more homers in the game – one by Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year Caroline Hedgcock, one from Rebecca Bluder and a second from LoBianco to break the game open in the fifth inning. Hedgcock earned her 12th win of the season and second of the Plainfield East Sectional. “They are a scrappy team. I told the girls they didn’t get here by luck,” South manager Ron Havelka said of Bolingbrook. “They are a very good team that beat a good West Aurora team to get here. They are young and they will be good in the future. They came back on us, but we had four home runs in the game and a couple with people on and that helped us. That was a 3-2 game
and people won’t realize how close it was for a long time.” The Mustangs played Sandburg in the Benedictine University Supersectional Monday after Bugle press time. A win would send South to the state finals in East Peoria. To get to the sectional final, the Mustangs had to face a familiar foe in cross-town rival Downers Grove North. Hegdcock again dominated in the circle as well as adding a home run in that game to get South on the board after North grabbed the early lead. She also had a two-out RBI double off the fence as part of South’s three-run fourth inning, helping the Mustangs to a 4-2 win. “Downers North is a really good team – a really scrappy team and they put the ball in play and make you have to make plays,” Havelka said. “This is the third time (we faced them in the playoffs) and it is always a battle – but we know it will be fun.” North took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, as Katie Polaski drove in Renee Bielawa , who had tripled down the right field line, for the first run of the game. “They went up 1-0 right away, but we battled back,” Havelka said. Hedgcock held North at bay after that and then evened the

game herself with a homer to center. “As a pitcher things will happen during a game, and you can’t let it bother you when you bat,” Hedgcock said. “Softball’s a game where you have to have a short memory, especially as a pitcher.” North battled back for a run in the seventh, but could not get any closer. “When the playoff brackets come out, I always see where we are and the next thing I do is look and see where Downers Grove South is,” North coach Eric Landschoot said. “They have had such a competitive team the last few years and we have had such a competitive team. They are always great games – close games. They beat us in extra innings a few weeks ago. It is just
always a good game with a lot of future college players on the field, a lot of girls that know the game and a lot of coaches that know the game. “Sometime it is hard to coach the game because you get so caught up in what is going on. It is a fun game to watch when we play. Today was two good pitchers and two good offensive lineups. There is a lot of small ball and they came up with the big hits when they needed them.” Hedgcock knows that when the cross-town teams meet in the postseason, records and seeds are out the window. “Every time we play North anything can happen because they come so amped,” she said. “They played a really, really good game and it is fun playing in a really competitive game.”
While Hedgcock dominated the playoffs, she didn’t have to pitch as many games this season as she did in the past because of the depth of the Mustangs. “Two weeks ago, we threw our number three for a week and she is good – but we wanted teams to put the ball in play and it was good,” Havelka said. The University of Arkansasbound Hedgcock likes to be in the circle, but knows not taxing herself may have been a recipe for success. “I like pitching, so I like throwing, but it has been nice going into the postseason fairly fresh because I haven’t thrown a ton of games,” she said.

Woodridge officials walk to support local businesses Mayor Gina Cunningham and staff met with 20 retailers and service providers
In an effort to connect with local businesses, village officials and staff set out on the inaugural Woodridge Business Walk last month. Mayor Gina Cunningham and staff met with 20 retailers and service providers located within Woodridge Plaza shopping center May 24. Woodridge Plaza, located at 75th Street and Janes Avenue, was selected as the first location for the village’s newest economic development effort. “Growth and success of local businesses is key to a healthy local economy, and the village continues to work to gain a better understanding of issues facing them,” Cunningham said. The village said the walk is among several initiatives to be undertaken this year to assist with local commerce. The Shop Woodridge Task Force began meeting last fall to discuss local business issues and consider ways that the village provide additional support and promote local businesses. An action plan created by Shop Woodridge Task Force is expected to be presented to the village board later this summer. Building upon the village’s current Business Retention Program, officials said the new initiative looks to address Woodridge’s strategic goal to support local businesses.
