Segment linking Will, DuPage preserves now open Whalon Lake, Greene Valley linked thanks to efforts of two forest preserves and quarry company A newly constructed 1.25-mile section of the DuPage River Trail that connects Whalon Lake preserve in Will County to Greene Valley Forest Preserve in DuPage County is now open.

Officials from the Will County and DuPage county forest preserve districts gathered Friday, June 1, for a ribbon cutting at the spot in Bolingbrook where the new trail segment joins the Whalon Lake loop trail. But even as the officials were gathering, bikers, walkers and runners were already utilizing the new trail segment, which begins in the northeastern corner of the preserve and travels east along Royce Road and north on Greene Road to Greene Valley in Naperville.

Andrew Andjelic of Naperville said he rides between the two preserves often, and the new trail connection provides a much safer route.

“It used to be a huge pain to get from my house to Greene Valley and beyond,” he said. ‘I’d have to ride on the road. It was very difficult, especially with the trucks on Royce.”

Scott Oberle of Woodridge said the trail link allows him to ride farther than before.

“I love it,” he said. “I can come from Green Acres (subdivision) and have an expanded ride. It’s much safer and I can stay off the roads.”

The new link allows trail users to go north 2.3 miles through Greene Valley to the Southern DuPage Regional Trail along Hobson Road, according to Kevin Horsfall, manager of planning for the DuPage Forest Preserve. From there, path users can head west about 3 miles to Washington Street and catch the West Branch DuPage River Trail, which runs 11 miles north through downtown Naperville to Blackwell Forest Preserve, he added.

The project was a collaboration between the two forest preserve districts and ElmhurstChicago Stone Company, which operates a quarry adjacent to Whalon Lake.

“This project shows that when you get different government agencies together and you have a vision, you can make it into a reality,” said Suzanne Hart, president of the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners.

Ralph Schultz, chief operating officer for the Will County Forest Preserve, said the project grew out of a 25-year partnership with Elmhurst-Chicago Stone, which constructed and paid for most of the new trail segment in exchange for getting permission to build a floodwater diversion channel in Whalon Lake preserve.

“It’s not only a small link here for the Will County Forest Preserve, it’s a big link to the rest of the trails that are available in Illinois,” said Mary Lou Wehrli, a DuPage County Forest Preserve commissioner.

Ed Stevenson, executive director of the DuPage Forest Preserve, said the project is an example of what can happen when governmental entities and private businesses work together.

“Public-private partnerships can really accomplish beautiful things,” he said. “So congratulations, really, to everyone on a job well done, and we look forward to the next chance to work together.

Jeff Brown, president of Elmhurst-Chicago Stone, said the business was pleased to assist in creating the trail segment.

“Seeing it to completion is a great thing, and we’re happy to continue Elmhurst-Chicago Stone’s tradition of giving back in the communities in which we operate,” Brown said.

In addition to connecting north to Greene Valley, a trail segment that opened in 2015 also links Whalon Lake to the Bolingbrook Park District’s Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm.

Muddy Waters wrote the songs of Chicago’s blues legacy

BY JEFF JOHNSON COURTESY OF THE CHICAGO SUNTIMES Since June 2017, Muddy Waters’ image has beamed down from a 10-story mural at 17 N. State St. in Chicago. But the king bee of Chicago blues looms even larger over the city with his outsized musical and cultural legacy.

The Mississippi Delta native, born McKinley Morganfield in 1913, followed the Great Migration to Chicago in 1943, where he found stardom with his groundbreaking electric guitar sound and classic bands. He died at age 70 in 1983, but new generations of artists often cite the influence of the six-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and Waters’ songs such as “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Rollin’ Stone” are used frequently by filmmakers and advertisers.

International tourists visit Chicago to bathe in Waters’ lore, including a visit to his longtime home at 4339 S. Lake Park. There’s not much to see, though, because the house that Tim Samuelson, Chicago’s cultural historian, has called Chicago’s most historic home has stood vacant and in a state of disrepair for many years. Plans are stalled to convert the Kenwood two-flat into a museum or other attraction.

Waters’ bluesman son Larry “Mud” Morganfield, who like his dad is a singer-songwriter-guitarist, spent time at the house, but never lived there. But he quickly rattles off the names of blues stars who did.

“James Cotton, Pinetop Perkins, Otis Spann and Little Walter all stayed there, and everyone from Paul Butterfield to Keith Richards went there,” Morganfield said. “I don’t care to have that house. What I care about is the house standing and representing Chicago as the real house of the blues. … Chicago needs to keep this man’s legacy alive.”

Morganfield admitted that being the son of a blues immortal can be a double-edged sword from a career standpoint.

“It’s both a curse and a blessing,” he said. “You have people who say, ‘He sounds like his dad, but he ain’t Muddy.’

Of course I’m not. But I have other people come up and tell me, ‘I had a lump in my throat because you remind me so much of your daddy.’ “

Others who want to walk in Waters’ footprints may visit the Chess Studios (www.bluesheaven.com/ historic-chess-studios. html) at 2120 S. Michigan, where the bluesman recorded many of his bestknown records and rock ‘n’ roll icon Chuck Berry strutted his stuff. Family members of the late Willie Dixon, who penned some of the biggest hits of Waters and fellow Chess artists such as Howlin’ Wolf, operate the studios with their nonprofit Blues Heaven Foundation.

Keith Nelson, Dixon’s grandson, conducts the tours and serves on the Blues Heaven board of directors. He said tours, which cost $10, are given hourly from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. He said between 100 and 350 people tour Chess weekly, and many ask about Waters.

“He’s always a huge part of the legacy,” Nelson said. “Muddy would be your most popular artist. He was your face.

I’m a big comic book fan, and if you had a blues comic book, Muddy would be your Superman.”

Musicians seeking to capture the Waters mojo may soon have their choice of two recording studios at Chess. “We’re planning to put older recording equipment from 1961 upstairs and modern recording equipment in a new studio downstairs,” Nelson said. “Hopefully this project will be done by the end of 2018 or early 2019.”

Carrying on the legacy of Waters and other postwar Chicago blues greats is the mission of current Chicago blues kingpin Buddy Guy, who once operated the late, lamented Checkerboard Lounge on a section of East 43rd Street renamed Muddy Waters Boulevard.

Guy moved Downtown in 1989 with his Buddy Guy’s Legends (www.buddyguy. com), now at 700 S. Wabash.

While sweet home Chicago takes

pride in its reputation as “the home of the blues,” with a lakefront festival that has drawn hundreds of thousands of music lovers yearly since 1984, the city also is a cornerstone of modern jazz.

In fact, Chicago’s jazz fest predates its blues bash by a decade.

King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton were early stars on the jazz scene, and the immortal Louis Armstrong further popularized the New Orleans sound in Chicago in the 1920s. Later Benny Goodman and a host of fellow big-band leaders swung at ballrooms such as the elegant Trianon in the Woodlawn neighborhood and the Aragon in Uptown.

Today the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (www. aacmchicago.org) guides Chicago jazz in adventurous new directions, and the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (www. greenmilljazz.com), 4802 N. Broadway, builds on its Prohibition-era tradition.

Highland School wins $10Kin Yorktown contest District 58 schools earn a total of $20,500 through mall contests Downers Grove Grade School District 58 schools won a total of $20,500 this year through contests sponsored by two local shopping malls.

Yorktown Center staff visited Highland School on Friday, June 1 to present the school with a $10,000 check for winning first place in the Yorktown Center School Bucks program. The check presentation took place during Highland’s all-school meeting on Friday afternoon.

“I am so proud of our community and PTA’s efforts to win this contest!” said Highland Principal Bridget Moore. “We appreciate Yorktown Center’s commitment to education, and we look forward to using the prize money to improve our school.”

The Yorktown Center School Bucks program awards shoppers points based on each dollar

spent at Yorktown stores and restaurants. Shoppers could choose which elementary school to award their points. directly from jail staff to an inmate and provides individual options to pass the time while awaiting trial or serving their sentence which decrease the anxiety of incarceration causing less friction between inmates and staff. The use of the tablet will allow additional educational opportunities and informational materials not yet in place in an effort to reduce recidivism of an inmate.

Together, we bring home $50,000 a year, and I feel like this car is interfering with our ability to save money and pay off $35,000 in debt. We already have two decent cars we drive to work, so what should I do about this?

STACY DEAR STACY, There are lots of guys out there who like shiny toys — especially cars. I get it, because I’m one of them. But these kinds of things are luxuries, and stuff like this should wait until the household and finances are in order. The family should always come first.

Dumping money into this while you two are struggling financially doesn’t make sense. On top of that, it’s causing problems between you two on a deeper level. I’m sure your husband isn’t a bad guy, so try sitting down with him and explaining how it makes you feel. Let him know what it’s doing to your finances and your marriage. You might even write the financial side down, so he can see exactly what kind of shape you two are in and where the money is going.

Once you do this in a kind, but concerned, manner, it may be a real eye-opener for him. On top of that, you might consider giving him a little incentive to get on board with the idea of getting your finances in order. Suggest that once the debt is gone, and you’ve got some savings in place, there might be a little extra cash on hand to help get that car up and running.

Despite falling in the IHSA Class 4A sectional, Downers Grove North hit its two seasonal marks

The goal of the Downers Grove North softball team every year is the same thing – win a regional championship and hit the 25win plateau for the season.

The good news for the Trojans is with a 5-2 win over Neuqua Valley on May 26, they hit both goals winning the East Aurora Regional.

The bad news was, a game later, North fell 7-0 and were nohit by Oswego East and Stanford recruit Emily Schultz.

“That was not a great note to end on – but at the beginning of the season, there are two things we want to – 25 wins, which we did with the regional championship and a regional championship and we did both of those things,” said Trojans’ coach Eric

Landschoot. “Obviously, we would like to keep winning, but we ran into an outstanding team today. We ran into a pitcher that had 10 or 11 strikeouts and nohit us. I think we put one ball hard in play. We were off balance at the plate and she got the best of us.

“They came out ready to go and we came out a little bit flat and they jumped on us right away.”

One loss to a team with five Division-I recruits is not something that should define or darken the Downers Grove North season.

“It was a great season, nothing to hang your head on. The season has to end sometime.”

Al Carius Award returns to Naperville North Central College’s combined success in men’s cross country and track and field during the 2017-2018 academic year has been rewarded by the United States Track & Field and

Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), which has bestowed the Al Carius Program of the Year Award on the Cardinals, bringing the award to Naperville for the fourth time in the 10-year

history of the award and the first time since 2011-2012.

The award, named after longtime North Central cross country and track and field coach Al Carius (H) ‘16, goes to the pro-

gram which achieves the highest average finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.

The Cardinals have finished first or second in the standings seven of the 10 years since the award’s inception in 2008.

North Central won its 18th Division III national title in cross country last November, a national record across all three of the NCAA’s divisions, and has finished first at the championship six of the past nine years.

The Cardinals also placed second at the Division III Indoor Championships in March, then closed the year with a secondplace showing at the Division III Outdoor Championships last weekend, North Central’s highest finish at an outdoor national meet since 2011, to finish with a total of five points in the Program of the Year standings.

Rowan University (New Jersey) was a distant second with 29 points, followed by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (35.5), Loras College (37) and the University of Wisconsin-Stout (43).

North Central also won the Al Carius Award following the 20092010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 academic years.

TRACK AND FIELD In recognition of their combined excellence in academics and athletics, North Central College men’s cross country and track and field student-athletes Zach Hird and Matt Norvell have been named to the 2017-2018 Google Cloud NCAA Division III Academic All-District Team, as nominated and voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The pair are among 12 individuals voted to the All-District Seven Team, which includes institutions from the states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

An accounting major, Hird is an Academic All-District selection for the second straight year and was also named to CoSIDA’s Division III Academic All-America Team in 2016-2017.

During the cross country season, he placed 26th at the Midwest Region Championships and 86th at the Division III National Championships as

the Cardinals won their national all-divisions record 18th national title.

He earned All-America honors in indoor track and field with a seventh-place finish as part of North Central’s distance medley relay team, earning the distinction for the second consecutive indoor season.

He won an individual championship at 1,500 meters in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Outdoor Track & Field Championships and qualified for the outdoor national championships at 5,000 meters, placing 12th.

Norvell, a double major in history and finance, earned his first All-America award during the cross country season, placing 17th at the national championships after finishing fourth at the CCIW Championships and seventh at the Midwest Region Championships.

He added a second All-America plaque indoors, placing eighth in the 5,000-meter run.

He finished second in the 5,000 at the CCIW Outdoor Championships and qualified for outdoor nationals at 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

North Central has now received 49 Academic All-District selections from CoSIDA. By virtue of their All-District status, Hird and Norvell are eligible to be selected for this year’s Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced June 19.

• Responding to the brighter lights of the national stage with remarkable poise, North Central College junior Naomi Yamane achieved a lifetime best showing in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Coming into a national meet for the first time and seeded 22nd out of the 22 entrants into the event, Yamane felt little pressure beyond her own desire to succeed.

“There’s the usual nerves, competing in a meet in general, but there was nothing to lose because I came in 22nd,” she said.

The loss ended the Trojan careers of seniors MacKenzie Bernhard, Renee Bielawa, Madilyn Greenaberg, Jade Mejia Wick, Savannah Rodriguez, Catherine Smerz and Olivia Wojciak.

“This group of seniors are all great kids, great students, five of them are playing next year either at Division-I or DivisionII,” Landschoot said. “They will all be successful people the rest of their lives and hopefully they have had a good experience the last four years. They were outstanding mentors. At practice when I stepped away, they kind of took on the role of coach. It is always best when they are able to coach and mentor each other.

As a head coach, what you want to see is kids who are playing college ball next year helping the freshmen and sophomores.”

On her first throw of the competition, Yamane delivered a distance of 52.38 meters (171 feet, 10 inches), a personal best by more than two feet.

She followed with a mark of 52.33 meters (171’8”) on the second throw before a slight improvement to 52.39 meters (171’10”).

Yamane finished third in the first flight of competitors and 10th overall, just missing a spot in the finals.

Yamane credited the seasonlong diligence of North Central throwing coach Sean Magnuson in the implementation of an improved element of technique with her improved performance throughout this outdoor season.

“This year, speeding up my third turn has been a big thing,” she said. “Sean has really tried to ingrain that in my mind. I think I did that today.

“I really want to get on the podium next year, and qualify in at least one other event.”

“Savannah was injured most of the season. Our go-to pitchers most of the season were Estelle and Audrey Gusel – I am not saying she had a coming out party, because people knew who she was,” Landschoot said. “She is going to Holy Cross in two years and she will be throwing a lot for us next year and Estelle will be throwing a lot for us next year.”

And next year, the goals for the team will be the same – with a hopefully better outcome in the sectional.

“We expect to be right back here next year with a better outcome, hopefully,” Landschoot said. “I am always a firm believer that if you have realistic expectations, but you set those expectations high, that people and teams will meet the challenge. Every week we look at the schedule and know that we need five wins that week and check them off. Hopefully that is one of the things they learn from me is that you have to hit those short term goals in order to, three months later, reach the season goal.”

season, the North Central College men’s track and field team found itself joined in a fierce battle at the top of the team standings Saturday in the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. When the dust settled, the Cardinals finished as the national runners-up once again in a meet that was not decided until the final running event was complete.

With a total of 35 points, North Central finished a single point by the University of Mount Union’s (Ohio) winning score of 36. Rowan University (New Jersey) placed third with 27 points, while Benedictine University finished fourth with 26.

The Cardinals owned a fourpoint lead as the teams took to the track for the 4-by-400-meter relay.

North Central’s foursome of Daniel Spaccapaniccia, Michael Stanley, Ben Nordman and Peyton Piron delivered a champion’s effort, hitting the finish line in three minutes, 11.27 seconds.

The time is the fastest by the quartet this season by more than a second and ranks third-fastest in the program’s history outdoors.
