Girl Scouts wins grant to create edible garden Henry Puffer Girl Scouts wins national grant to create edible garden A little rain didn’t deter Henry Puffer Girl Scout Troop 51266 and their community partners from planting an organic edible garden during “The Big Dig” event at their school on May 20.

Troop 51266, which comprises fourth graders, won a $3,000 Grants for Gardens national grant from Annie’s Foods, an organic food chain. Henry Puffer was the only Illinois school to receive this grant this year. The girls partnered with Downers Grove Organic Gardeners, Bros@Work and all Henry Puffer Girl Scout troops to hold “The Big Dig.” More than 40 volunteers attended the event.

“I am incredibly proud of Henry Puffer Girl Scout Troop 51266,” said Henry Puffer Principal Todd McDaniel. “From applying for the

garden grant, to collaborating on the garden, these girls, their troop leaders and our community partners all exhibited tenacity toward helping the greater good.”

The Girl Scouts used their grant funding to build three 3’x9’ raised beds, a 2’x5’ herb garden, several pots, a compost bin, tool shed and fencing. They also installed a rain barrel irrigation system, which will catch recycled rainwater from the school roof and use it to water the garden.

“More than 20 varieties of seeds were planted, along with more than 20 plants, all organic!” added Lisa Burkhart, Troop 51266 co-leader and garden coordinator.

In addition, the Girl Scout troops painted beautiful, whimsical elements on several rain

barrels, garden stakes, ladybug rocks and rainmakers, which they placed throughout the garden.

Girl Scout Troop 51266 applied for the Annie’s Foods grant as part of their Juniors Bronze Award initiative. This initiative asks girls to demonstrate their commitment to helping others, improving the community and the world, and becoming the best they can be.

“The goal is to teach kids about where their food comes from, nutrition and healthy eating habits, as well as how to garden and take care of the Earth,” Burkhart said.

“It will also serve all grades as an outdoor classroom for all sorts of subjects and be a great addition to the Puffer campus. A longer range goal is to supply some of the harvested food to our Puffer families, especially families in need.”

Village Board votes for several agreements Board authorized purchase of 2,200 tons of rock salt through county

The Woodridge Village Board of Trustees approved June 1 a first amendment to a license agreement, originally authorized last spring to allow Sigecom use of the Village’s right-of-way.

Board action allows Sigecom to extend the installation, construction, location, operation and maintenance of telecommunication facilities along 183rd Street and Heritage Parkway. Such a measure allows for service to Verizon cellular towers and is similar to the work completed in 2015 by Woodridge School District 68 to connect their various school facilities.

To access the right-of-way, Sigecom was required to secure a 10-year license agreement with Woodridge. That agreement stipu-

Woodridge PD names new Community Outreach Sergeant The Woodridge Police Department named Kenneth (Ken) Ostarello as the new Community Outreach Sergeant effective May 19. In this role, Sgt. Ostarello, previously a Detective Sergeant, will engage with the public for community outreach and crime prevention efforts. Sgt. Ostarello will assist with developing the GRIT curriculum, which combines elements of D.A.R.E. with personal development (i.e., perseverance) and current issues facing youth including social media, peer pressure, and bullying.

School Resource Officer Dan McIntyre, the GRIT instructor at Woodridge schools, will report to Sgt. Ostarello and work closely with him to develop the GRIT program.

The Village is to be paid an annual fee in the amount of $3,000, with that installment increasing by three percent every year thereafter.

Additional installations within Village limits will require authorization by other entities, including the Illinois Department of Transportation, DuPage County, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and ComEd property.

With the approval of the first amendment in a 5-0 vote, Sigecom is to pay $847.42 to account for the prorated amount of the new annual fee for the current year, minus the amount credited for previous overpayment.

Trustee Kay Page abstained from the vote. To prevent slippery roads in the event of rain or snow, the board authorized the purchase of 2,200 tons of bulk rock salt through the DuPage County Joint Purchasing Agreement.

The county received four bids and the Village contended that it is in the best interest to award the

contract to the lowest bidder, Detroit Salt Company. In doing so, Woodridge officials budgeted for a contract award in the amount of $127,400 for rock salt, brine and other liquid treatments.

Should the Village experience a more active winter season, the agreement stipulates that additional services can be provided at a price of $56.49, which previously wasn’t an option.

Woodridge officials approved a series of measures giving the village administrator the ability to enter into agreements with Karyn Byrne, an independent contractor for housing inspection, code enforcement, and building inspection, plumbing inspection and plan review services.

The work Byrnes has performed for the Village dates back to 2013.

Around that time, requests for proposals were sent out seeking contractors and it was awarded to her.

The rates at which Woodridge officials are paying Byrne amounts to a zero percent increase in fees assessed. The contract limits services performed by the contractor to four years and ends April 30, 2021.

Roll call is a brief meeting at the start of every police shift when department supervisors meet with patrol officers to take attendance, check equipment, and inform the oncoming shift of any important and relevant information.

At a community roll call, residents will have the opportunity to meet the patrol officers assigned to the area; discuss local police issues; learn about the active partnership

between the police department and Woodridge residents; become informed about crime trends, and see the inside of a squad car. The Woodridge Police Department will host the Community Roll Calls at various locations throughout the Village of Woodridge to provide an opportunity for all residents to attend.

An inclusive city moving closer to reality

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST | COLUMN: SPECIAL VOICES I was recently at the Village Hall in Clarendon Hills co-hosting an On The Table event with my friend Diane Compton, of Westmont. The event was an “Inclusive City” discussion with approximately 25 people both with and without disabilities. The Chicago Community Trust, a foundation that for the past 3-years has sponsored civic discussion groups, backed our particular On The Table program; bringing people together to discuss important events and issues in a fun way. Special Olympics also got involved in this On The Table program because it is celebrating Special Olympics’ 50th anniversary next year.

Diane and I were grateful for the opportunity to lead this On The Table discussion. This town hall-style meeting gave those of us in the disability community a place to talk about the need for inclusion in our towns, schools, jobs, and in the media.

Inclusion in our community means exposure for everyone to people with special needs.

“The fact that, whether you’re a regular education or special education teacher, the more you’re exposed to children with special needs you’re going to become more equipped and confident

in your interaction with kids regardless of your certificate,” said Amy McCurry, of Clarendon Hills, and mother to Abbey, a middle school student diagnosed with Down syndrome. “If Inclusion is successful, they [regular education teachers] are with those kiddos [individuals with special needs] as much as special education teachers.” Abbey is always told by her mother to not talk solely to her special education teacher or her aide because her mother wants Abbey to talk to all the various teachers during the day.

This example of my friend Abbey’s inclusive education illustrates how those without disabilities can learn how to have a conversation with someone who has special needs. There might still exist people in our community who think that a person with special needs should not be included in regular education classrooms.

Teachers, other professionals, and all residents of our towns must come together to support inclusion of those of us with disabilities, thus creating an inclusive city. In our schools and jobs and also in the media, whether in film, television, radio, or podcast, those of us with disabilities are often not seen, and if we are, we are not always portrayed in a positive light.

Gradually, however, the inclusion of those of us with disabilities is beginning

to change for the better. The general public is beginning to see the joy and the whole gamut of human experience on the faces of those who are diagnosed with disabilities.

The Emmy award-winning docuseries, “Born This Way,” is becoming an incredibly powerful platform for advocacy.

Beginning three weeks ago, “Born This Way” premiered its third season on the A&E television network, and is showing, through the power of stories, the inclusion of the disability community in our mainstream community.

This television show breaks new ground as being one of the first reality docuseries to feature people with intellectual disabilities. The show centers around seven young adults with Down syndrome as they follow their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships, and work, all while defying society’s expectations of them. Downers Grove North takes fourth place in the Class 3A soccer finals

NAPERVILLE — A lot of people had a hand in the historic feat accomplished this spring by the Downers Grove North girls soccer team.

But when it came time to carry their prize, the Trojans put it in the hands of senior defender Elizabeth Hodonicky.

Hodonicky, who served as co-captain along with forward Emily Redpath and midfielder Maggie Nevrly, beamed as she held the Class 3A fourth-place trophy on Saturday.

The Trojans didn’t win a game in their first appearance at the state finals at North Central College in Naperville, but they did become the first soccer team, boys or girls, in school history to win a trophy.

“As a senior captain and my third year on varsity, I feel like this is the perfect way to end my soccer career,” Hodonicky said. “I know for every single person on the team, they know how hard that we’ve worked for this.

“Whether they played five minutes in a game or maybe not even at all, or if they played the entire game, they know that they’ve all contributed to this and we know our hard work has paid off.”

Downers North (20-4-2) had never even reached a sectional final before this year. But the Trojans won nine straight games before their state championship dreams ended with a 1-0 loss to eventual state champion Barrington in Friday’s semifinals.

Barrington (28-1) scored on a header by Michayla Herr in the seventh minute but were blanked for the final 72 minutes as Downers North junior goalie Grace Stevenson made five saves and defenders Hodonicky, seniors Francesca Marconi and Kelly Doro and juniors Olivia Bull and junior Francesca Marconi continued their season-long strong play.

“I think we gave it our all,” Stevenson said after that game. “We played together.

North falls in extra innings in sectional final

The Downers Grove North softball team may have lost a game – but it gained experience Friday in the Bolingbrook Sectional final.

The Trojans fell 2-1 in nine innings to West Aurora in the sectional final, but not because of poor play.

The game ended on a freak play where a two-out line drive back up the middle struck North pitcher Savannah Rodriguez and caromed back toward home plate, driving in a pair of runs.

“Savannah felt pretty good going into that at bat because she had struck that girl our three times already in the game,” said North coach Eric Landschoot. “But the more pitches you see, the probability goes up. She stuck the bat out, which is what you do with two

strikes and made contact. Savannah was generating all the power and she hit it back up the middle.”

The Trojans (26-7) tallied their lone run in the third inning off a bases loaded walk, but couldn’t scratch anymore off West Aurora pitcher Hannah Beatus.

“What really did us in, we left seven people on base and off a pitcher like that you really need to take advantage,” Landschoot said.

“When you have those chances, you need to go for the throat.”

Despite the loss, Landschoot said the team has nothing to be upset about this season.

“This was one of the first years that the bracket kind of played in our favor and once we beat Plainfield East and then took out Plainfield North, our kids believed they could beat anyone and rightfully so,” he said. “It hurts to lose now, but at the end of the day, we

are a very good team. We beat two very good teams and took another very good team to nine innings. It hurts now, but we have nothing to hang our heads about.”

With a talented team coming back, led by Rodriguez, who Landschoot called the top junior pitcher in the state, the Trojans have a bright future.

“I love the team we have coming back next year,” Landschoot said. “We have our top four pitchers coming back, we have, on any given day, seven or eight starters back and we had a very strong JV team that went undefeated in conference. I like where we are at, I like where the program is. The next couple days hurt, but when you start looking at the long term of the program, I think this postseason going forward that we really can hang in there with any team in the state.”

Things didn’t go the Trojans’ way in the third place game against Collinsville, either. Downers North took a 1-0 lead when Carissa Mysliwiec scored in the 12th minute off an assist from Simone Gardner, but the Kahoks scored four straight goals and went on to win 4-2.

“It was amazing,” Redpath said of her goal. “It was hard to enjoy it, though, because I wanted to get back there and win (the game), but I was definitely trying my best.”

That’s something the Trojans did all season, buoyed by the positivity and experience of veteran coach Brian Papa, who took over the program this year.

“This year in particular we just all had a constant bond with each other,” Hodonicky said. “Right from the start we all just connected and we knew that we could go places.

“When Papa initially told us that he wanted us to go to state,

we were kind of wary of his ideas.

He told us to stay positive through all situations. We knew that if we worked hard together and we stayed as a team that we would be going places.”

Once the Trojans got there, however, they had to battle the nerves many first-time qualifiers experience.

“We were definitely really nervous going into the games,” Red-

path said. “I think that was a big program.

“But the whole time we were just enjoying the ride. We’re just really happy to be here. Hopefully we’ll be back here again and I think the legacy we can leave is (future teams_ will probably be less nervous.”

Downers North will graduate 12 seniors but Stevenson and fellow starters Mysliwiec, Bull and

juniors Chloe Nowka and Carlie Nehls will return.

“It’s been really awesome to be here,” Stevenson said. “I think it gives us something for next year to look forward to for everyone who is coming back.

“This has been important for our whole team to kind of see what is possible when you work hard and you’ve got the right system in place.”

Age is no reason to adjust the Baby Steps DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are in our 50s, and we have just $12,000 to pay off before we’re debt-free. We’ve paid off almost $70,000 in debt in the last two years. We would like to buy a house soon, but we know we also need an emergency fund.

It would take us almost a year to build up an emergency fund, so should we make adjustments to the Baby Steps since we’re getting older?

“Born This Way” is not just a show about and for adults with Down syndrome. People with any disability and those without can relate to the show. Kris Bomgaars and her daughter, cast member Megan, told me that everyone from medical professionals to legislators to restaurant workers and everyone in-between is watching this show.

“I had someone say to me once ‘I didn’t know I could have a conversation with someone who had Down syndrome’” said Kris Bomgaars.

“And oh my gosh, are you kidding me I can’t get her [Megan] to stop having conversations.”

The stories like the ones shown on “Born This Way” or that of my friend Abbey McCurry being included in regular classrooms are why inclusion matters.

These stories show us how are inclusion in our towns, schools, and media should be.

Independent living is one of many storylines that viewers see on this current season of “Born This Way.” This past fall, I sat down virtually with Cristina Sanz and her dad Mariano, of Long Beach, Calif. and stars of Born This Way. Cristina and Mariano told me about one of her dreams that she would like

you’ve been paying off debt. You need a fully funded emergency fund or three to six months of expenses set aside before you start saving for a down payment on a home.

You’ve been making great progress, and you obviously have a good income to be able to pay off debt that quickly. Maybe in your case you could lean a little more toward the three-month side with your emergency fund before you start saving for a house. Then, after you’re all moved in, you could revisit the emergency fund and beef it up to six months.

I had the opportunity to speak with others of this incredible cast of “Born This Way” on my own radio show program, Special Chronicles, and in getting to know this diverse group of young adults with Down syndrome, I feel like we could be great friends.

One of the stars, Steven Clark, was diagnosed with Mosaic Down syndrome, a rare form of Down syndrome that differs from the Down syndrome diagnosis that many of his cast-mates have. In addition to starring on “Born This Way,” Steven is a huge fan of movies. He has binders filled with movies he’s seen and wants to see, he plays Challenger baseball, and he hopes to someday try competing in more sports within Special Olympics.

“Not only is it [Born This Way] a docuseries, it’s our lives,” said Steven. “You’ve got to have a narrative, you’ve got to have a story.”
