Students selected to attend Young Authors Conference Downers Grove students recognized for great work

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is officially representing many students who submitted entries to the 2019 Illinois Young Authors Conference Contest.

This annual writing program invited students to write an original story and submit it to their classroom teacher.

Each school selected one manuscript to be featured at the Illinois Young Authors Conference on Saturday, May 18 at Normal Community West High School in Normal, Illinois.

Unfortunately, just for this year, the Illinois Reading Council had to cancel this year’s Young Authors Conference.

However, Downers Grove Community Relations Coordinator Megan Hewitt, among others, still wanted to recognize the student’s outstanding work.

“The conference gives talented young writers the opportunity to share their stories with peers and with published children’s authors, which is very exciting,” Hewitt said.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council and the Illinois Language and Literacy Council.

Each of the Downers Grove schools invite students to participate in this program each year, showing each of the student’s hard work.

This once in a lifetime optional opportunity is for students to practice their writing and storytelling skills.

Depending on participation levels, schools typically select one winning manuscript per classroom.

“Even though our students were unfortunately unable to attend in Normal this year, we are all still very proud of all that they have achieved,” Hewitt said. “The Illinois Reading Council had to cancel this year’s Young Authors Conference, but it doesn’t take away the work that they have produced.”

Student wins Patriot’s Pen essay contest O’Neill student Ryan Lynde articulates what American Flag means to him in a big way

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Century Post 503 selected an essay written by Ryan Lynde, an O’Neill Middle School eighth grader, as the winner of its 2019 Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.

Lynde’s essay also competed at the contest’s district regional level, where it came in second place out of 2,220 essay submissions.

Patriot’s Pen is the VFW’s nationwide youth essay competition and encourages children to express their views on democracy.

This year, the theme was “Why I Honor the American Flag.”

“It encourages young people to write and express our views on the country,” Lynde said. “For this year’s theme, it was pretty cool to be able to talk about what the flag means for me and to my life.”

In last’s years contest, more than 120,000 students participated in the annual event.

The national winners receive at least $500, and the first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the winner and a parent or guardian.

For all entries, they begin at the Post level for the competition.

Our country means so much to me, Lynde said. The American flag is so important because of how many people have fought for our country and for us to live as citizens in our world today.

The only exception is where schools, classes and youth groups have large numbers of students and wish to conduct their own competition, submitting one winner for each 15 students to the local VFW Post competition.

Because of the abundance

amount of entries, the contest consists of four levels.

The first level (entry) is sponsored by local VFW Posts.

Post winners advance, one for every 15 entries, to the VFW District (regional) level where the one first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (state) level.

The one first-place winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW national competition.

The winner from each Department (state) then competes for the national prizes.

Specifically for Lynde’s essay, it was a tribute to the U.S. veterans who fought for the right to honor the American Flag in times of national emergencies along with times of celebration.

It also focused on how impor-

tant the flag is to his daily life.

“Our country means so much to me,” Lynde said. “The American flag is so important because of how many people have fought for our country and for us to live as citizens in our world today.”

Lynde also said he spent almost a week working and preparing for this essay, while trying to make it precise and show exactly how he felt about the topic.

“There was a lot of hard work and editing the essay because I really wanted to show people what it means to me,” Lynde. “I was happy with the way it turned out and I’m glad I got to write about this topic.”

The VFW also honored Lynde during local and regional banquets this year showing all of his hard work and dedication that culminated over time.

Newspaper Staff Earns Awards South High Blueprint Newspaper Staff Earns Awards and State Honors Throughout each school year, the Downers Grove South High School student newspaper, Blueprint, informs the student body of the latest news, trends and happenings. During the 2018-19 school year, Blueprint earned the following awards and recognitions: “Distinguished School Newspapers Online Website.” School Newspapers Online, a provider of scholastic newspaper solutions, designated Blueprint staff with online digital badges in the areas of website excellence, story page design, writing, multimedia, coverage and audience engagement.

The Blueprint staff was Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Sectional Champions for the second year in a row. Fifteen students competed at the IHSA State Journalism Competition; two students were IHSA State Journalism Medalists, as senior Emmanuelle Copeland placed third in Advertising and junior Jacob Casella was fourth in Headline Writing At the IHSA State Journalism

Competition, students compete in various categories such as copyediting, photo storytelling and video news. Within each category, the students plan and execute a finished piece of work within a short time period ranging from 90 minutes to three hours. The works are then judged and awarded based on a rubric scoring system.

Casella mentioned he arrived at school at 6 a.m. for weeks prior to the state tournament. “[English teacher] Mr. Indreika and I would practice rounds of writing headlines, similar to how the process would be at the state competition,” Casella said. “Writing headlines is like solving a puzzle,

and I hope to compete in the same category next year.”

In the Advertising category, Copeland was given a pretend company with a specific marketing goal. She had to create an on-the-spot ad, including content and artwork. Reflecting on her time as a Blueprint staff member, Copeland is grateful for all she has learned. “Being on the Blueprint has allowed me to learn about other students’ interests and views outside of my own,” Copeland said. “Engaging with more students gave me a well-rounded view of how our school community functions.”

Copeland will be studying art and chemistry at William’s College in the fall.

“This year’s Blueprint team is a young, impressive, and very competitive group of students,” South High English teacher and Blueprint advisor Mary Long said. “We’ll definitely miss our few seniors. They’re a family.”

South High’s journalism staff members were 2018 IHSA Journalism State Champions and 2018 IHSA Sectional Champions. In addition, for the first time in South High history, the Blueprint won a Golden Eagle and students were named Sectional Champions at the 2018 Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association (NISPA) Conference.

Benet Academy uses pair of late game heroics to claim IHSA Class 2A state title over Wauconda

Benet defender Mary Kate Hansen has been dreaming of winning a state championship ever since she began playing soccer a decade ago.

She and her teammates are living that dream.

Hansen scored the tying goal late in the second half and Jaimee Cibulka bagged the gamewinning goal in the second overtime as the Redwings beat Wauconda 2-1 on Saturday in the Class 2A state championship game at North Central College in Naperville.

The dramatic victory, which featured a one-hour lightning delay before the start of overtime, was the culmination of 10 years of effort for Hansen, who along with fellow senior backliner Mary Kate Wilhelm have been friends and teammates since they were 7.

Hansen and Wilhelm have been attending the state finals for nearly as long and yearned to one day play in a title match.

“It’s amazing,” Hansen said.

“It’s like a dream come true.

“When the buzzer went off, I looked over at Mary Kate Wilhelm and it was like time stopped. Everything that I’ve done for the past decade of soccer was worth it.

“Every practice, every work-

out, has been worth it. No coaching staff, no group of girls deserves this more. The coaches worked non-stop and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out.”

Hansen, a co-captain and University of Chicago recruit, saved the Redwings after they had trailed for 61 minutes against fellow first-time finalist Wauconda. The Bulldogs (19-32) went into a defensive shell after scoring midway through the first half and it almost worked.

Then junior defender Kate Flynn sent a cross from the left side into the middle of the box to Hansen, who blasted a 15yard shot into the net with 1:46 left in regulation.

“I’ve been a defender my whole life but I just did what I had to do to keep my team in the game,” Hansen said. “It was a great ball by Kate Flynn.

It was the best feeling I’ve ever had by far.”

It was the fourth goal of the season for Hansen, the anchor of a terrific back line. Benet coach Gerard Oconer was not surprised to see her make an impact at the other end.

“She just refused to let us lose,” Oconer said. “She knew a state championship was on the line, so she would not let us lose.”

Lisle takes fourth in state at Class 1A

Lisle goalkeeper Grace Hoscheidt walked off the field Saturday at North Central College with a look of exhaustion on her face and an ice bag on her injured thigh.

In that, she wasn’t alone.

Hoscheidt and the Lions clinched the program’s third Class 1A fourth-place state trophy last week when they defeated Stillman Valley 4-0 in a supersectional game at Benedictine University.

But their quest to outdo their finest finish ever came up short in a 2-1 loss to Herscher in the thirdplace game.

Hoscheidt, a 5-foot-1 junior, was one of several Lisle players who suffered various knocks in Friday’s 5-0 semifinal loss to eventual state champion Columbia, a powerhouse team that went unbeaten against Illinois opponents this season. But she gutted through the discomfort to make eight saves against Herscher, including a brilliant stop on a breakaway by Mattie Brown with 17:40 left in a 1-1 game.

“I wish I could have done better but in the previous game I got an injury to my thigh and it was just much harder to (put weight) on it,” Hoscheidt said. “So I played the best I could.

“I need improvement, just like everybody else, and I wish we could have won, but the better team won today.”

The Tigers (24-5), who beat the Lions 3-2 during the regular season, were indeed the superior team, at least in the second half during which they controlled most of the possession.

Brown scored the game-tying goal on a 15-yard rocket from the left side of the penalty area with 27:08 remaining. Lisle’s one good second-half scoring chance came with 19:50 remaining when sophomore Tara Kane sent a lead pass into the box for senior star Alexa Fasone, but Herscher goalie Rourke Zigrossi came out and smothered the ball just before Fasone got to it.

The Tigers got the game-winning goal with 8:22 left. Jillian Milton poked a pass in front to Chloe Walsh for a point-blank shot. Hoscheidt got in front of the shot but the ball squirted under her arm and into the net.

“It was spinning, so I had the ball but not enough (of it),” Hoscheidt said. “I had an opening (under her arm) and it kind of squirmed through.”

The Lions (18-3-2) are now 0-6 all-time in games at the state finals, having also gone 0-2 in 2010 and 2012. But they did notch one noteworthy achievement when sophomore defender Madison Manns became the first Lisle player to score at the state finals.

Manns gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with 32:47 left in the first half when she converted an eightyard shot in traffic after Herscher failed to clear a corner kick.

“I was honestly in shock,” Manns said. “I didn’t process it at first.

“That was everything. We had to push. We just had to give it our all and try as hard as we could.”

The Lions did that. Despite the loss, Lisle coach Paul Kohorn, who has won 196 games in his 16year tenure at Lisle, applauded the effort.

“I’m proud of this team,” Kohorn said. “We were so beat up after yesterday’s game.

“We had so many girls out there playing injured. Of our 21 girls we probably have 14 of them with ice somewhere, so it was hard for us to fully compete, but we did our best.”

Yet Hoscheidt was left feeling as if the Lions have yet to reach their potential.

“I thought we played well but not as best we could,” Hoscheidt said. “We have a lot of improvement that we could have done and I hope that we’re back next year.”

That’s not a far-fetched goal.

The Lions must replace star forwards Fasone, who had 37 goals and 13 assists, and McKenzie Weaver, who finished with 23 goals and 15 assists.

But Lisle returns 17 players, including eight starters. Besides Hoscheidt and Manns, notable underclassmen include Kane, who had 23 goals and eight assists, freshman Emma Weaver, who ended her impressive rookie season with 17 goals and 14 assists, and Fasone’s sister Emma, a sophomore who contributed six goals and five assists.

“Most of our starters are underclassmen,” Emma Fasone said.

“Next year we really want more people to step up and help out with the team.

“To me, we’re so connected now that when we grow together over the next (couple) seasons, we’ll be better as a team.”

Weaver and Alexa Fasone will not be playing in college but their impact on the program cannot be understated. They led the Lions to a 35-5-3 record over the past two seasons, tying the school record for wins in 2018 and breaking it in 2019.

“They’re all great leaders,” Emma Fasone said. “They set really good examples for us so we can succeed in the future without them.”

Kohorn hopes that includes a return to the state finals.

“We’re going to miss our seniors because they were fantastic this year, but we are pretty young,” Kohorn said. “We only started three seniors and one junior.

“We’ve got some good stuff coming back and hopefully we’re in the hunt to come back here next year and do a little bit better.”

Besides, why would you want to stay in debt for 30 years? Do you have a fear of winning with money? Are you feeling so generous toward the bank that you want to just hand them piles of cash every month for three decades?

The average millionaire in this country pays off their mortgage in 10.2 years. Do what smart people do, Julie. Do what people who win with money do. A 15-year, fixed rate mortgage is the only kind of home loan I recommend!

KYLE DEAR KYLE, You can buy an additional $1 million in liability insurance for your home and car for around $250 a year. Why would you want that? If you were a target. Why would you be a target? If you have a net worth of $500,000 to $1,000,000 or more. You might also be a target if you just have a really good income and make a lot of money.

In either case, you’d want to pick up a liability umbrella policy.

Illinois to legalize sports gambling, add casinos Governor pledges signature on bill approved by Senate Sunday

SPRINGFIELD — Six new casinos, along with legalized sports betting, are coming to Illinois after Senate lawmakers approved a massive gambling expansion bill Sunday.

Senate Bill 690, sponsored by Indian Creek Democratic Sen. Terry Link, passed that chamber on a 46-10 vote after being approved by House lawmakers the day before.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has already announced his intention to sign it into law.

“I’ve only been doing this for 20

years to get this done, and it’s a little emotional,” said a teary-eyed Link during floor discussion of the bill.

Link estimated that gambling expansion along with other revenueraising measures in the bill could net Illinois more than $12 billion in the next six years.

“This key piece of legislation really is going to make an economic difference of keeping our dollars home,” he said, adding he expects “thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in construction across the state.”

That construction would go toward the six new casinos authorized by the bill in Waukegan,

Rockford, Danville, South Suburbs, Williamson County and downtown Chicago.

Casinos, race tracks and sports facilities that seat more than 17,000 people – such as Wrigley Field or United Center – would also be eligible to buy sports betting licenses under the bill, making Illinois one of about a dozen states to legalize the practice after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year allowed it.

In a news release Saturday, Pritzker expressed his support for the measure and praised the lawmakers who have unsuccessfully tried to expand gambling in the state for years.

“Legalized sports betting and expanding gaming will create jobs up and down the state, …where communities hungry for employment will see 10,000 new jobs,” he said.

“Gaming expansions in this state have been attempted and failed for years. … Today is a win for the whole state.”

Revenues raised from the new casinos, the selling of sports betting licenses, and a higher tax on video gambling machines would go toward funding the vertical components of a long-term capital infrastructure plan, such as state building renovations. Sports betting licenses would range from $3.2 million to $20 million and be offered to both brick-and-mortar facilities and to online operators, with taxes of 15 percent.

Under the bill, race tracks in the state would be able to install slot machines and table games, turning them into racinos. A pilot program will also assess sports betting through the Illinois Lottery, a plan that was considered but dropped by lawmakers earlier in the session.

CHAMPS FROM PAGE 5 It took more than one player, of course, to enable Benet to win. The Redwings (24-3-1) set school records for wins and goals scored (107) and got star turns from most of their starters at one point or another.

The final goal came with 6:33 left in the second overtime when senior forward Abby Casmere slipped past a defender and sent a short pass to her left to Cibulka, who buried a 15yard shot to give Benet its first lead.

“It was a great play by Abby,” Cibulka said. “She kind of had her back turned (to the net) so I called to her and she made the right call knowing I had a better angle.”

It was the 14th goal of the season for Cibulka, a sophomore in her first high school season after playing club last year. She will need to watch film to actually witness it.

“To be honest, I didn’t even see it go in,” Cibulka said.

“Some of those you just know they’re going to go in before you even see it touch the net, but I didn’t even think when I did it.

“I knew my team needed me and I had to go for it because you miss all the shots you don’t take.”

Casmere, who had a teamleading 20 goals this season, opted not to take a shot on the decisive play, putting her trust in her younger teammate.

“I was just trying to turn it and Jaimee was right there,” Casmere said. “I gave a little toe poke to her and I’m very glad she finished it.

“I had all my faith and trust in her. I knew she was fully capable of doing it and she did the job. She’s been amazing all season.”

So have the Redwings, who set themselves the goal of winning their first state title and went out and did it.

“I can’t even describe the feeling,” Cibulka said. “Not a lot of people can say they’ve won a state championship and it’s just huge for me and my team.

“We did it together. All season it was our goal and to finally reach it is an amazing feeling.”

After beating Troy Triad 3-1 in the semifinals behind two goals from Mia Tommasone and one from Flynn, the Redwings were solid favorites to win it all.

Wauconda gave them a tougher-than-expected battle but they pulled through, capping a terrific school year for the Lisle school that saw the girls volleyball and girls basketball team also reach the state semifinals.

“We didn’t want to have to

come down to this, but when it comes down to the last few minutes you obviously want it to go your way and it did go our way,” Cibulka said. “It was very dramatic at the end and to stay composed at the end is so hard, but everyone did that.

“It was definitely a team effort. I’m so proud of my team for coming out on top.”

So was Oconer, a 1998 Benet grad and former longtime as-

sistant coach who succeeded Bob Gros as head coach in 2017 and has compiled a 58-14-3 record. Gros and Henry Wind, who served as Oconer’s assistants, founded the Benet program in 1991.

The magnitude of the accomplishment had yet to set in for Oconer.

“Not completely because you think about this for so many years, you dream about it,”

Oconer said. “Everything has to go right.

“There’s so many things along the way where if it doesn’t go right, like even today, you just don’t win. What makes it even more special is to be able to do it with Bob and Henry on my staff. They built this program from scratch and coaching with them for the last 17 years has just made it incredible.”
