Local 4th of July celebrations, fireworks Will, DuPage Counties host variety of 4th of July events for families The fourth of July is Tuesday and several communities are holding parades, picnics, festivals and evening fireworks to commemorate Independence Day. Please note that the extended festivals have an admission fee.

JUNE 28 - JULY 2 • LISLE Lisle Eyes to the Skies Festival (Nightly fireworks show).

Lisle Community Park, 1825 Short Street. Three fun-filled days that will include the following: carnival, huge children’s area, craft fair, over 30 food booths, live music on two stages, Balloon Launches are at 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., balloon glows at 8 p.m., and nightly fireworks starting at 9:45 p.m. Each night of fireworks features a theme. July 2 will feature music.

JULY 1 • JOLIET Independence Celebration & Fireworks Show. 6–10:30 p.m. Billie

Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre. Back by popular demand and still free. Following the parade, the Lisle Heritage Society will host an ice cream social on the grounds of the Museums at Lisle Station Park, 921 School Street in Lisle just north of Village Hall. Discover Lisle’s past while savoring a frozen treat.

Sam’s Club closes June 30

Approximately 140 employees were told of the closing June 21 After 24 years at 7300 Woodward Ave., in Woodridge, Sam’s Club, the membership-only bulk retailer is permanently closing June 30.

The approximately 140 employees were told of the closing June 21. According to published reports employees are being provided severance pay and relocation to other stores.

Sam’s Club, founded in 1983, is owned and operated by Walmart. The closing will leave 32 Sam’s Club locations in Illinois: Romeoville, Naperville, Montgomery, Hodgkins, Joliet, Tinley Park, Northlake, Addison, Batavia, Cicero, Evergreen Park, Matteson, Streamwood, Des Plaines, Elgin, Evanston, Wheeling, Vernon Hills and Calumet City.

WORDPRESS.COM On this federal holiday, also known as Independence Day, marking the Colonies’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared independence from the Great Britain and its king, we thought it would be appropriate to share some fun facts about this historic day. We are already familiar with the fireworks, parades , barbeque and festivities like picnics, fairs, concerts and parties that take place on this day, but there are some things many people don’t know about the Fourth.

1. Congress made Independence Day an official unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870. In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

It is believed that the tune comes from the nursery rhyme Lucy Locket. One version of the Yankee Doodle lyrics is “generally attributed” to Doctor Richard Shuckburgh,a British Army surgeon. According to one story, Shuckburgh wrote the song after seeing the appearance of Colonial troops under Colonel Thomas Fitch, V, the son of Connecticut Governor Thomas Fitch.[2] 20. It wasn’t until the mid-point of the season that Lockport junior Tara McElligott realized what kind of season she was having statistically.

All she did once she realized it was improve and end the season with a .508 batting average, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, a .932 slugging percentage. She scored 56 runs and posted a staggering 73 runs batted in – which is tied for 14th all time in the IHSA for a single season.

“I started watching (the stats) half way through the season. I was looking at my last year’s stats and I had 36 RBI, so I realized what I was putting up was that high,” McElligott said. “At one point, one of my teammates found out I was leading the state in RBI and that was really cool. It was crazy to think about it. I changed my swing and my approach at the plate and then it was the girls in front of me getting on and doing their jobs. I was keeping everything simple and just seeing the middle of the ball and getting my job done.”

Her accomplishments netted McElligott a IHSA Class 4A first team nod as well as earning her the 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year honors.

“When I look back on the sea-

son, she was a sleeper for a while, then she really got hot in the last half of the season. In that last third of the season, she was on fire,” said Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec. “We had her in the third spot in the order this year and Tara handled the spot well. Some kids in the past have felt the pressure of being the No. 3 hitter and I don’t think that ever crossed her mind. I really felt she stepped up this year on the field and as a leader and she was that calming force a lot of times.”

A catcher by trade, McElligott played her second position of third base the last two seasons before making the move across the diamond to first this year.

“I played third freshman and sophomore year and played first this year. I haven’t played first since eighth grade,” she said. “In the summer, I catch and play third and in college I will catch and play third, but I have always been versatile and my coaches through the years have always told me that knowing different positions will always help.”

Although she still has one more season at Lockport, McElligott has already committed to the University of Illinois-Chicago and she said making that commitment prior to last season helped relax her.

“It was a huge weight off my shoulders,” she said. “I just have to play for myself and my team and we just want to win. I don’t have

“She has been the most consistent player on our team, made all-conference for Interstate 8 (North) this year,” said Lisle coach Trent Schalk.

“She is a true team player and a leader and has a great attitude,” said North coach Kelly Ash.

KATIE POLASKI DOWNERS NORTH The senior second baseman batted .527 with a 1.335 OPS. She drove in 30 runs and scored 19.

She was a four-time member of the West Suburban Conference All-Conference team.

“She has been a staple at the top of the Trojan order for

the last four years,” said North coach Eric Landschoot. “She will truly be missed by her teammates and coaches. She is truly a multi-dimensional player, an exemplary student and has been a role model student-athlete.”

SAVANNAH RODRIGUEZ DOWNERS NORTH The junior batted .506 with an OPS of 1.335. She belted five home runs, seven doubles, drove in 30 and scored 19 runs. As a pitcher, she was 14-4 with 130 strike outs in 92 innings with a 1.96 ERA. “The Western Illinois commit hit in the middle of an explosive lineup and was also able to maintain a sub-2.00 ERA against tough competition” Landschoot said. “Savannah is smart, aggressive and will be fun to watch next year as one of the top senior softball players in the area.”

Woodridge Rotary supports youth and families in community Woodridge Rotary is proudly completing its 27th year of providing financial support for youth and families to enroll in recreation programs and fulfill their dreams. Over 60 youth and their families have been supported since July 1, 2016.

Since 1990, the Woodridge Rotary Club and the Woodridge Park District have partnered to provide

families with economic hardship the financial assistance to participate in recreation programs.

“Our goal is to make sure that every young person has the opportunity to participate in recreation programs that fulfill their lives,” commented Bob Mocek, Rotary Club President. “It is a tribute to our members and the Woodridge Park District that we have been able to sustain this effort for so long; and we have every intention to continue this program for many years to come,” he added.

“Our partnership with the Rotary Club has been very effective over these years. Hundreds of

Woodridge families have benefitted from this program,” commented Mike Adams, Park District Executive Director.
