Rotary GroveFest to support organizations Festivities are set to take place in downtown Downers Grove June 22-25

Rotary GroveFest is returning June 22-25 to Downers Grove to offer food, fun and live entertainment.

The event, founded in 2009, is to bring four days of entertainment and family-friendly activities to area residents.

“They can expect a wide variety of food vendors, as well as local businesses, a beer garden, car show—that we’re very proud of— and just a lot of fun,” said Lisa Rasin, the festival’s chairwoman. “It’s

a great community event.”

Typically, the festival draws an estimated 20,000 people.

“This is our eighth year, we’ve tripled since the first,” Rasin said.

“It started in the parking to the Village of Downers Grove.”

Festivities are set to take place in downtown Downers Grove and feature 60 food and business booths.

Music acts to take to the main stage include 7th Heaven, Rock Academy, American English, Jin and Tonic Band, Sixteen Candles and Libido Funk Circus.

“The community is supportive,” Rasin said. “We have many sponsors and volunteers. We have several volunteer organizations that donate their time. It’s full circle. At the end of the festival, we make a

donation to the organizations.”

Last year, Rotary Club donated to 27 nonprofit volunteer organizations.

“All the money raised goes back to the community,” Rasin said.

Rasin noted the challenges nonprofits face in today’s world to sustain their operations and said that’s where the Rotary Club of Downers Grove aims to make a difference.

“The event helps create that exposure,” Rasin said, noting that Rotary GroveFest gives organizations a chance to run a booth where people can meet with representatives to learn more about programs and services offered.

In the past, Rotary GroveFest has helped to assist organizations like SEASPAR, District 58 Foundation,

the Boy Scouts of America, Indian Boundary YMCA and Alliance for Smiles.

“I think it will benefit the organizations,” Rasin said. “Because of the proceeds, we are giving back to nonprofits, which are worthwhile.

I think it’s important to support the people in the community.”

Rasin said seeing the community come together for the festival each year propels the Rotary Club to continues its mission.

“It’s an overwhelming, heartfelt thanks to the community for helping us to put on the festival,” she said.

Texas man found guilty of ‘99 sexual assault of Lisle woman Noyola-Espinal’s next court appearance is June 15 for sentencing DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Roberto Noyola-Espinal, 41, of Texas, was found guilty of forcing his way into a woman’s home and sexually assaulting her in 1999.

Judge Robert Miller delivered his verdict in the case following a four-day-long bench trial. In all, Miller found Noyola-Espinal guilty of six counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, Class X Felonies and one count of Home Invasion, also a Class X Felony.

On February 7, 1999, NoyolaEspinal approached the then 63-year-old victim’s apartment in Lisle and knocked on her patio door. Thinking it was a friend of hers, the woman began to open

the door. Once she realized she did not know the person knocking on the door, the woman attempted to close the door. Noyola-Espinal forced the door open however, and entered the apartment.

Once inside the apartment, Noyola-Espinal physically and sexually assaulted the woman. After Noyola-Espinal left, the victim then went to her neighbor’s home and called the police.

Following an investigation into the incident led by the Lisle Police Department, a DNA profile of the suspect was entered into the federal Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

The investigation of the assault continued throughout the years.

In October, 2013, a CODIS hit on the DNA collected at the scene of the crime implicated NoyolaEspinal.

On February 27, 2014, NoyolaEspinal was extradited from his home in Texas, where he had fled after committing the assault, and returned to DuPage County to face the charges.

“Seventeen years ago, Roberto Noyola-Espinal forced his way in to his victim’s home where he proceeded to commit unspeakable acts against an unsuspecting, innocent woman,” Berlin said. “While justice may have been a long time coming, today Mr. Noyola-Espinal learned that he will be held responsible for the horrendous acts he committed so many years ago. I would like to commend the men and women of the Lisle Police Department for their persistence and dedication in this case. They never gave up and it is because of their outstanding work Mr. Noyola-Espinal is looking at a very long time behind bars. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Jennifer Lindt and Mike Fisher for their work in holding Mr. NoyolaEspinal responsible for his actions.”

Noyola-Espinal’s next court appearance is June 15 for sentencing. He faces a penalty of between 24 to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Seat belt campaign brings safety to local drivers Between May 15 and May 30, the Lisle Police Department participated in the annual Click It or Ticket high-visibility seat-belt enforcement campaign, bringing awareness to area residents and writing 51 seat belt citations, two suspended license arrests, 34 cell phone citations, three uninsured motorist citations, three speeding citations, and 9 other traffic citations in the process. The campaign, which coincided with one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year, sought to stress the importance of seat-belt use through enforcement and community outreach. Click It or Ticket is implemented through the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by federal highway safety funds.

“It was a successful campaign this year, and we believe through our enforcement efforts, we helped save lives,” said Deputy Chief Wilke. “We know seat belts save lives in vehicle crashes. Issu-

ing tickets was not our goal, but it was a way to remind people of the importance of such a simple action.”

According to the latest data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 9,874 of the 22,441 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide in 2015 were not belted. During this year’s campaign, NHTSA urged law enforcement agencies nationwide to issue seat-belt citations to anyone caught in violation of the law— during the day and especially at night, when 57 percent of those killed are unrestrained. By adding patrols at night, and training officers on specific techniques to catch nighttime violators, the campaign was a “major success,” Deputy Chief Wilke said.

Illinois’ seat-belt use rate is 93 percent, down from 95.2 percent in 2015. The national seat-belt use rate is at 88.5 percent, according to NHTSA’s 2015 data. This Click It or

Bugle, Enterprise earn top newspaper awards Voyager Media Publications honored at Illinois Press Association’s annual convention Voyager Media’s publications, The Enterprise and Bugle newspapers brought home several top awards from the Illinois Press Association’s annual convention in Springfield on June 8-9.

Almost each of the newspaper groups’ publications placed in the top of their categories in their division, ranked by circulation range. Both the advertising and editorial departments were recognized by their peers.

Among the editorial awards, The Enterprise had a Top 4 finish for General Excellence and it took first places in overall Newspaper Design as well as Single Page Design by graphic designer Shelley Holmgren. Sports Editor Mark Gregory’s sports features earned the Joliet Bugle a fourth place finish, while his sports feature brought the Bolingbrook Bugle a third place spot. Downers Grove North’s Swanson leads 2017 Voyager Media All-Area Soccer Team

There was a time not long ago when Abby Swanson wasn’t thinking about becoming an AllState soccer player.

All she wanted to do was be able to play the sport again.

The Downers Grove North midfielder suffered a torn ACL her freshman year and spent that season on the bench as the team manager.

“My world flipped over a little bit, my soccer world at least,” Swanson said. “I didn’t know what I was going to be coming back.”

Swanson is one of the best players in the state and she is just scratching the surface of her potential. She followed up a solid sophomore season by leading the Trojans in goals and assists, part of a larger group effort that sparked Downers North to the greatest season in school history.

Swanson tallied 13 goals and 18 assists and led the Trojans to a school-record 20 wins and a fourth-place showing in the Class 3A state tournament. Oh, yes, she also was the first Trojan in more than 15 years to be named All-State.

For those efforts, Swanson is the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“She’s a soccer player,” Downers North coach Brian Papa said.

“She loves the game. If I could ever get her to relax and quit beating herself up, she’s going to be one helluva soccer player because she’s got the instincts that you want in a leader.

“Right now she’s a junior. Once she learns composure, there’s no stopping her. That’s what I’m teaching her.”

Papa, an IHSSCA Hall of Famer who took over the program this year, taught all of his players to aim high. That was helpful even to a player the caliber of Swanson, who surprised herself by earning a starting spot as a sophomore.

“To be starting already sophomore year was kind of crazy,” Swanson said. “So for me I was like, ‘I made it back,’ and that (level) was what I thought (my ceiling) was.

“But over this past year I went into club and I wanted to keep getting better, so (becoming AllState) was a personal goal for this season and it happened, so it was pretty cool.”

A lot happened for the Trojans this year and Swanson was a major catalyst. They earned the No. 1 seed in their own sectional and avenged one of their two regular-season defeats when they

beat Lyons 2-1 on penalty kicks in the final.

Swanson likely saved the season when she tied the game on a penalty kick with 14:58 left in the second half, then converted the clinching penalty kick in the shootout.

That gave the Trojans their first sectional title, but Swanson wasn’t done. She was one of five players to make penalty kicks during a 1-0 supersectional upset of traditional power Naperville North, a team that had 10 Division I players.

“I think she brings an intensity that we really need,” Downers North junior goalkeeper Grace Stevenson said. “Sometimes we just kind of need her and she’s able to step in and be like, ‘Hey, guys, we need to come out hard this half, we need to step it up.’

“I think she really helps build up the energy on the field.”

There is a lot of energy in Swanson, particularly in her powerful right leg, which can

“That’s been a focus from the coaches to me is to kind of keep getting my head up and look for the shot,” Swanson said. “I tend to pass a lot and spread the wealth a little bit.

“But I need to take my chances too because we just need the ball in the back of the net, one way or the other. I wish it was easy.”

Succeeding like the Trojans did this season is not easy. The program had one only one regional title before this year and the fourth-place trophy is North’s first piece of hardware.

Swanson enjoyed every minute of it.

“It’s playing a sport that you love with your best friends,” Swanson said. “How much better can it get than that?”

How much better can Swanson get? The honors student already has committed to Loyola, but

she won’t rest on her laurels with one more high school season left.

“I’m so excited,” Swanson said. “I’ve been talking to (the Loyola) coaches and that will be the next challenge and adventure. I’m going to stay hungry.”

HAILEY ARLIS MINOOKA Senior forward tallied 19 goals and led the Indians to their first conference championship in 36 years. The four-year starter was a three-sport athlete, also starring in golf and basketball.

“Megan has outstanding speed and ability with the ball at her feet, which makes her very difficult to defend,” Plainfield North coach Jane Crowe said. “She often draws two or three defend-

ers at a time and still manages to get to the goal.”

OLIVIA BULL DOWNERS NORTH Junior defender was Honorable Mention All-Sectional selection. Had five assists and scored the game-winning goal in sectional semifinal victory over York.

“When Erin played forward, she was able to use her crafty skills

to consistently beat defenders off the dribble to create scoring opportunities for teammates.”

ERIN GRAEFEN PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Senior forward had 10 goals and five assists. “Erin is fantastic technically, tactically, and in the air which enables her to play any central position at an extremely high level,” Planfield Central coach Ken Schoen said.

KATIE GESIOR, BENET Senior midfielder was a fouryear starter who had 12 goals and eight assists this season to earn All-Sectional and All-East Suburban Catholic Conference honoree. “Katie excels with the ball at her feet and is lethal on free kicks,” Benet coach Gerard Oconer said. “She has worked tirelessly to improve some aspect of her game each of the past four seasons and is an exceptional leader.”

KENNEDY MESSINA MINOOKA Junior midfielder recorded five goals and 11 assists. “Kennedy Messina is a very special player,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said. “She is the most technical player I have had at Minooka. She has a unique ability to put other players in a spot to succeed but can also create great options for herself.”
