Jubilee returns to Woodridge for 35th year Park district, village fill corner of Woodridge and Center drives with bands, bingo, food and rides Carnival rides, live music and a variety of food; summer does not get any better than that.

The four-day event organized by the Woodridge Park District and Village of Woodridge promises fun for the whole family.

District celebrates opening of Oldfield Oaks Dog Area Site provides much-needed off-leash dog area in Southeast DuPage County The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will celebrate the opening of its new 7-acre off-leash dog area at Oldfield Oaks Forest Preserve in Darien with a ribboncutting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19.

The new area features concrete plazas with double-gated entrances, a 0.2-mile gravel inner loop trail and a 0.35-mile turf outer loop trail. There’s a 0.6-acre area for small dogs and a 6-acre parcel for all dogs with multiple activity areas. It has picnic tables and trees for buffering and an adjacent 42-car asphalt parking lot, which doubles as a trailhead for

visitors who want to reach the forest preserve’s existing 2 miles of looped trails.

Dog owners will be able to apply for an off-leash dog permit at the event. Permits can also be purchased online 24/7.

Forest Preserve District Commissioner Linda Painter, District 3, had long lobbied for an offleash dog area in this part of the county, noting the nearest areas, Mayslake Forest Preserve in Oak Brook and Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville, are each more than 8 miles away.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide a beautiful spot in southeast DuPage County for dog lovers to bring their pets,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

In addition to Oldfield Oaks, Mayslake and Greene Valley, the District has off-leash dog areas at Blackwell in Warrenville, East Branch in Glendale Heights,

Hawk Hollow in Hanover Park and Springbrook Prairie in Naperville.

The District issues about 10,000 permits for its off-leash dog areas each year, evidence the facilities are quite popular with visitors.

Pet owners who wish to use any of the District’s off-leash areas must have valid permits and follow all rules and regulations, which are available online or through Visitor Services weekdays at 630-9337248.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has been connecting people to nature for more than 100 years. More than 4 million people visit its 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs each year.

SEASPAR recognizes outstanding participants Agency honors volunteers, program participants at annual banquet The South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) honored three outstanding participants in its programming for individuals with disabilities with special awards at its annual Believe & Achieve Recognition Banquet on May 23. Community partners, staff, and volunteers were recognized as well.

Samantha Wagner of Woodridge received SEASPAR’s Athlete of the Year award, which is presented to a participant in SEASPAR’s athletics programming who displays a positive attitude, good sportsmanship, teamwork, knowledge of the game, and skill.

Wagner joined SEASPAR’s Special Olympics Volleyball program in 2015, and after that first season as a Spartan, she also joined the Basketball program and would go on to join the Flag Football program in 2017 as the lone female player on the team. Despite her small stature, Samantha has no trouble holding her own on the court or the field, and she is known among her coaches and teammates for her athleticism, kindness, and willingness to do whatever is best for her team.

Owen Murphy of Downers Grove received SEASPAR’s Cultural Artist of the Year Award, which is presented to a participant in SEASPAR’s cultural arts programming who recognizes the importance of cultural arts.

Thirteen-year-old Murphy has cerebral palsy and spina bifida which impact his mobility, but he participates in SEASPAR’s Adapted Music Lessons program which uses touchpad instruments to make music. Over the last two years, Murphy has discovered an ability to pair instruments and match notes and pitches to create original compositions and arrange them to his favorite songs. Even though Owen is a quiet young man, his music has become a voice through which he can express himself.

Becky Cavanagh of Clarendon Hills received SEASPAR’s new recognition introduced this year, the Rising Star Award, which is pre-

sented to a participant in SEASPAR’s youth programming who has a positive attitude and positive interactions with their peers and staff.

Cavanagh, who has Down syndrome, was the youngest-ever SEASPAR participant at only 23 months old when she first rode the Serena’s Song accessible hot air balloon that SEASPAR sponsors each year at the Lisle Eyes to the Skies Festival. Becky, now 12 years old, continues participating in SEASPAR programs and is also an accomplished Special Olympics athlete, becoming a Global Messenger at just 10 years old.

This year’s Special Olympics Illinois Cop on a Rooftop fundraising campaign featured her in advertisements.

SEASPAR also recognized a Community Partner of the Year, which was presented to Level UP Basketball Academy of Downers Grove. Level UP was formed in 2011 to provide children with high level basketball coaching in a positive, fun, and encouraging environment.

Level UP began partnering with SEASPAR in 2015 and hosts an annual basketball tournament

fundraiser to benefit SEASPAR’s Special Olympics programming.

This year’s event alone had 54 teams and raised $4,000, all of which was donated to SEASPAR. Over the last three years, Level UP has donated an incredible $13,000.

Additional awards were presented to outstanding staff and volunteers, including Program Assistant Bob Ackermann of Western Springs, Inclusion Aide Sue Willis of Woodridge, and volunteer Ann Saladino of La Grange.

“At SEASPAR, we celebrate the achievements of our participants in every program, whether it’s a Special Olympics athlete making her first catch in Softball, an adult with socialization challenges interacting with his peers, or a child with autism learning to decompress in our Wonders Multi-Sensory Room,” said SEASPAR Executive Director Matthew Corso. “That positive energy, encouraging our participants to believe in themselves and achieve their potential, is at the core of what we do, and formally acknowledging our participants’ accomplishments with our Believe & Achieve Recognition Banquet is a highlight of the year for staff and participants alike.”

Nauvoo home to growth of Mormon religion

BY EMMA BAKER OF THE HANCOCK COUNTY JOURNALPILOT For the Mormons, Quincy appeared to be a beacon of hope and safety during tumultuous times.

Members of the Mormon faith began arriving in Hancock County about 1839 looking for security after having encountered hostility elsewhere, according to Thomas Gregg, a Hancock County settler who wrote about the Mormon faith in his 1880 book “History of Hancock County, Illinois.”

But in Quincy they were welcomed, which contributed to the faithful choosing Hancock County as a place to settle. They established their own town, Nauvoo, north of Quincy. Gregg’s book describes early Nauvoo, before the building of the Mormon Temple, as a picturesque site on the east side of the Mississippi River, about 10 miles north of Keokuk, Iowa.

“The origin, rapid development and prosperity of this religious sect are the most remarkable and instructive historical events of the present century,” Gregg wrote about the Mormons in Nauvoo.

Illinois was a new home where members settled after being driven out of New York, Ohio and Missouri. Unfortunately, the Mormon followers would eventually be driven out of Illinois, too.

THE FOUNDING OF A FAITH The founder of the religion, Vermont native Joseph Smith, was living in New York in 1820 when, at age 14, he read a passage in the New Testament and went to the woods to pray. It is there where Smith said God and Jesus Christ appeared to him, according to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website. This vision is known now to Mormons as the “First Vision.”

“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head,” Smith wrote, “above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.”

That experience inspired him to found Mormonism. Church members believe Smith was led in 1823 to a hill in Palmyra, New York, where he received, from an angel known as Moroni, an ancient record, engraved on gold plates, that gave the history of the people who lived on the American continent during

the time of Christ, according to the Mormon website.

He used those to write the “Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”

Smith - along with Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris and David Whitmer - then began spreading the word of the book and created a new religion. Cowdery, Harris and Whitmer were known as the “Three Witnesses” and were the only other people to see the plates.

Smith and a few followers made their way to Ohio, where the religion increased in numbers but persecution continued, so they traveled to Missouri.

Church members began to flee from Liberty, Mo., after Smith and other Mormon leaders were arrested in November 1838 on charges of murder, treason, burglary, arson, larceny and theft, according to “Utopian Communities of Illinois” by Randall Soland.

By January 1839, Mormon apostle Brigham Young fled with several hundred followers to Quincy. Thousands more followed.

“Eventually, a total of 8,000 Mormons came to Quincy, where the citizens offered their sympathy and assistance by opening up their homes … giving the Mormons food, clothing and shelter,” Soland wrote.

PLANTING ROOTS Smith joined his family in Quincy, but soon began searching for a new home.

Mormon leaders purchased several hundred acres of land in Commerce, now known as Nauvoo, and began building before the church members joined. By June 1840, there were nearly 3,000 people in Nauvoo.

“Between 1837 and 1846, Mormon missionaries in Great Britain baptized almost 18,000 British citizens from England, Scotland and Wales, of whom 4,733 immigrated to Nauvoo,” Soland wrote.

Within eight years of settling in Nauvoo, the number of residents had grown to nearly 12,000. About $1 million was raised for construction on a temple, which started in 1841 and completed in 1846. New laws were incorporated to help the church prosper, such as tithing, which started in 1838.

“Under the law of tithing, 10 percent of the member’s possessions and property at the time of baptism, as well as 10 percent of their annual income, was to

be given to the church,” Soland wrote.

The Bill of Incorporation empowered the mayor and aldermen of Nauvoo City Council to pass any law they chose, including the court of Nauvoo authority to grant writs of habeas corpus (a court order that allows a prisoner to be released from detention if a judge determines there to be a lack of sufficient cause or evidence). This law applied to Smith, regardless of jurisdiction.

TROUBLES RE-EMERGE Not everyone was happy with the new faith, though. In 1844, a group of dissidents formed an opposition group to the Mormons, and started a newspaper.

“The first and only edition of the Nauvoo Expositor was printed on June 7, 1844,” Soland wrote. “It contained scandalous and derogatory allegations about the ‘adulteress’ lives of Smith and other Mormon leaders. Smith and the city council declared the newspaper libelous and a public nuisance and ordered the town marshal to destroy the press.”

The group against the Mormons filed charges in Carthage against Smith, saying he incited a riot. But due to the city’s ability to issue writs of habeas corpus, Smith was arrested, quickly tried and acquitted by the Nauvoo court.

Anti-Mormons in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri were outraged, according to Soland’s book. Smith contacted Gov. Thomas Ford for help.

“Ford instead declared the destruction of the Expositor illegal and demanded that the Smith brothers (Joseph and Hyrum) come to Carthage for retrial,” he wrote. Smith was arraigned in Carthage, where bail was set high but was quickly paid. Smith was arrested once more for treason, “on the grounds that Smith had wrongly declared martial law in Nauvoo during the destruction of the presses of the Expositor.”

And it was while being held in the Carthage Jail with his brother, Hyrum, that Smith was killed on June 27, 1844.

According to Soland, “Just after 5 o’clock that evening, a group of men approached the jail. The men on guard fired their guns in the air. One group of attackers stormed up the stairs and fired their guns into the room where Joseph and Hyrum were staying.”

Downers Grove North senior Francesca Marconi played her final soccer season in a new position with a wounded knee and a fierce determination to build on the unrivaled success her team enjoyed in 2017.

Mission accomplished.

Switching from outside back to center back, Marconi cemented her legacy as one of the best defenders in school history. She was the anchor of the back line that recorded 12 shutouts, one fewer than last year’s team which advanced to the state semifinals and earned the school’s first soccer state trophy.

On a team that struggled to score goals at times, Marconi’s toughness, mental fortitude and athleticism was the linchpin of North’s continued success. Despite having a target on their backs, the Trojans

(14-7-4) won their second consecutive sectional championship before losing to Andrew 2-1 in the supersectional.

It was quite a feat for a program that had won just one regional title prior to 2017.

For her efforts, Marconi has been named the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“She’s a tough defender,” Downers North sophomore forward Alexis Parker said. “She won’t stop.

“She just goes and goes and I think that’s great for our team because she has such a high work ethic.”

Parker and her teammates know exactly how tough Marconi is. They have to go against her in practice every day.

“She gives me a run for my money every time,” Parker said. “But it only makes me better.”

ALL-AREA FROM PAGE 5 Swanson, who was last year’s Voyager Player of the Year, has played with Marconi since they were 8.

They played on different club teams for a while but Swanson, a Loyola recruit, prefers to be on the same side.

“You want her on your own team,” Swanson said. “You don’t want to play against her.

“We always talk about how we’re each other’s favorite girls to play with because we’ll always play for each other. The whole game we’ll just look at each other and we’re instantly connected and playing with full heart every time.”

Marconi, who comes from a long line of star athletes, gave her heart and soul to the Trojans, particularly this year, which will be her final competitive season. Marconi was set to sign with Colorado-Colorado Springs but underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in October, which led her to forego a college soccer career.

Instead, the aspiring nurse will attend South Alabama, where she will she be reunited with her sister Gianna, a former All-State forward for North who will finish her nursing studies after playing soccer at Colorado State. “(The decision) was tough,” Marconi said. “It definitely has (made this year more special) especially coming off last year, trying to work up to that or even better this year.

“After my surgery, my knee has not been 100 percent, so it’s been a lot of wear and tear on my body.

Sometimes I’m so exhausted.”

But Marconi never exhausted her desire to compete and win and as a result, the Trojans didn’t, either. She was a rock in the middle of the back line, playing every game despite some discomfort.

“I didn’t really think about it because of the mental stuff but every now and then it would hurt,” Marconi said. “(Downers North coach Brian) Papa was really good about it. If I needed a rest he’d take me out.”

Few players know what Marconi went through better than Swanson, who missed her freshman year with a torn ACL but recovered to become a two-time All-Stater.

“That’s tough,” Swanson said.

“I’ve been there with the knee stuff.

“I know a huge part of it is mental, so the fact that she can push it back and keep playing is awesome.

(Marconi) just focused on getting better and getting back out there and for the team. I think that shows a lot about her.”

Indeed, Marconi has always had a team-first attitude. The four-

“I started as a midfielder in park district until eighth grade,” Marconi said. “Then my coach put me on defense because he saw that I was a bigger body and stronger in the back than I was up top. I had more of a defensive mind and my technique was better in back.”

Marconi’s physical talent can be attributed to her genes, though her defensive role is an anomaly within her family. She is the granddaughter of Joe Marconi, who was a fullback on the Chicago Bears’ 1963 NFL championship team.

Marconi’s aunt, Janelle Marconi, was a track and field star at Downers North who won the state title in the discus in 1986 and now coaches track at Hinsdale Central. Then came her sister, Gianna, who was a star forward for the Trojans.

So Marconi had a name to live up to when she started at North.

“It’s really just an awesome opportunity overall,” Marconi said.

“Bears fans at North know about (her grandfather).

“I’ve got my aunts and uncles who have left a legacy and then Gianna being all-state and going D-1 in college has left a huge legacy. To walk into that, it was big footsteps to fill so I’ve just been working hard all four years and trying to be the soccer player she was and just do my best.”

Marconi is one of six children.

She has three brothers, two of whom expect to be athletes at North in the future, and a sister, Mia, who is a junior forward for the Trojans. But she has felt no pressure to excel.

“My parents (Renee and Jonathan) have raised us to know that they don’t expect us to be like any of our other siblings. They know we’re individually different and good in our own things. Coming in I knew we had the Marconi reputation, but I just did what I could.”

What she did was considerable and her final season went by fast, though she was smart enough to relish every moment.

“This is the last time I will be able to wear a jersey and represent a school, so (I wanted to) take it all in,” Marconi said. “Just play with all your heart and don’t walk off the field thinking you could have done more.”

ISABEL CERDA PLAINFIELD SOUTH Senior forward scored 12 goals and five assists to earn all-conference honors. Voted team Offensive Player of the Year.

ALLYSON FISCHER LOCKPORT Senior forward earned all-conference and all-sectional recognition for the third straight season.

Tallied seven goals and nine assists and finished prep career with 30 goals and 25 assists. Committed to Illinois-Springfield.

ERIN FLYNN BENET Senior forward had nine goals and 13 assists, leading Redwings in assists for the third straight year.

KATE FLYNN BENET Sophomore defender was a dynamic two-way threat at left back.

There’s gas for his car, along with maintenance and insurance. He’ll need to save a little money — maybe even for college — and I’m sure he’ll want some spending cash, too.

Sit down, and teach him how to make a written budget by figuring out the upcoming month’s income and expenses ahead of time. Also, make sure he knows how to properly balance and reconcile his bank account.

It’s still your responsibility to provide him with the basic necessities at this point. But I love your willingness to teach your son how to handle money intelligently.

The sooner he learns some basic money management principles, the sooner he’ll be able to handle his finances responsibly in the real world!
