Officers carry torch for Special Olympics Illinois Village has been involved with Law Enforcement Torch Run since the early 1990s

More than 4,000 people attended last year’s Woodridge Jubilee.

Law enforcement officers across Illinois took to the streets, highways and roads of the state last week, carrying the torch for Special Olympics Illinois.

Officers carried the “Flame of Hope” on June 8 in order to help raise funds for those hometown sports heroes competing with Special Olympics Illinois. Approximately 3,000 officers, representing every branch of law enforcement, covered the 23 legs of the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run. The Woodridge Police Department team consisted of several officers, including Dan McIntyre and William Bodnar. Many community members also participated in the Torch Run by carrying the torch from 63rd Street and Hobson Road to the Woodridge Town Centre.

The Woodridge Police Department has been involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run since the early 1990s. The department has set a goal of $40,000 for this year.

Discover Westmont mobile app now available

App available on Google Play Store and iTunes

The village of Westmont recently launched the new Discover Westmont smartphone application and business listing.

The app, which residents can download on their smartphones and iPhones, is a platform for users to easily access village news and a new business listing.

“One of the great things about this app is that businesses can create their own coupons that subscribers can now access from their smartphones,” said Westmont First chair and village trustee Bruce Barker. “Several Westmont businesses have created coupons and specials that can only be found through the app.

“We’re hoping this will inspire residents to sign up for this opportunity right away.”

Club concludes year-long project with Sharing Connections Junior Woman’s Club Golf outing fundraiser raises $1,400, helps afford new beds

The Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club marked the conclusion of their year-long community improvement project with local charity, Sharing Connections, at the fourth annual Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club Charity Golf Outing.

Through the generous efforts of the participants at the golf outing, raffle ticket sales raised enough money to purchase seven beds for Sharing Connections clients. Funds raised at the Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club annual Charity Golf Outing are typically designated for Senior Scholarship Awards and other local charity programs.This year, after learning that hundreds of Sharing Connection clients are on a wait list for a new bed, the Ways and Means Committee

Sharing Connections provides furniture and household items to low-income families helping them transform a bare apartment or house into a home. Enrichment program offers STEM summer camps for students Bricks 4 Kidz partners with area park districts

The Downers Grove and Westmont park districts are partnering with Bricks 4 Kidz in Downers Grove to offer summer learning camps in science, technology, engineering and math.

Studies have shown that students without access to educational opportunities experience learning losses over the summer, and the National Summer learning Association said students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during that time.

Betsy Russo, managing director for Bricks 4 Kidz in Downers Grove, calls this intellectual lull “brain drain,” and said the summer months present an ideal opportunity for children to increase their knowledge in STEM subjects.

“Children want to take what

they learned throughout the year and channel it in a way that fits with their interests,” Russo said. “We enjoy providing an atmosphere that allows them to do that and allows teachers to also show off their talents in a unique and inviting way that children can benefit from.”

Russo taught kindergarten and first grade at James G. Blaine Elementary School in Chicago, and decided to get involved with Brick 4 Kidz because of its commitment to STEM education.

“I knew how special this was because it was so difficult to provide this in the regular school day through CPS when I was teaching,” Russo said. “This was partially due to time constraints and partially due to resources. If we want to provide the building blocks for our children to compete in the global marketplace as an adult, they must have a strong foundation in Science,Technology, Engineering and Math.”

The Westmont Park District is partnering with the Darien Park District to provide Comic Creator and Movie Making camps, running July 21 through July 25 and July 28 through Aug. 1. The Downers Grove Park District host Mining and Crafting and Comic Creator camps Aug. 4 through Aug. 8 and Mining and Crafting and Movie Making camps Aug. 11 through Aug. 15.

Russo said that Bricks 4 Kidz contracts teachers to teach its camps, which are modeled by the organization. She added that she also provides instruction at the camps.

“We hope to reach as many children as we can over the summer so we can enhance their STEM education in a fun and engaging manner,” Russo said.

The Woodridge Jubilee starts Wednesday, and that means festival season has officially arrived in the western suburbs.

This year marks the 31st year of the annual summer festival, which runs Wednesday through Sunday on the corner of Woodridge and Center drives in Woodridge.

Live music, food, beverages and, of course, carnival rides are just some of the attractions available to visitors attending this year’s Jubilee.

The village of Woodridge and the park district organize the Jubilee, which last year attracted more than 4,000 attendees over the four days of the festival.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m.

Wednesday with the opening of the carnival. Food vendors, the Mille Lite beer tent and the Woodridge Jaycees bingo start at 6 p.m. Thursday, and live music by Hillbilly Rockstarz and Wedding Banned begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Hat Guys and Maggie Speaks will perform Friday evening, starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday marks the first full day of activities, which includes a fishing derby at Lake Harriet, an appearance by Miss Illinois Jessica Jacksa, the Illinois Teen Battle of the Bands competition and a fireworks spectacular. Just South of Heaven, Shine Box and The Blooze Brothers will provide

live music, starting at 5 p.m.

The Woodridge Jubilee wraps up Sunday with unlimited carnival rides for $20. Parking is available at the Town Centre and the Community Center. Rotary GroveFest Rotary GroveFest kicks off the following week in downtown Downers Grove, and attendees can enjoy all the standard festival draws, as well as a few attractions unique to the festival Now in its 30th year, Rotary GroveFest runs Thursday, June 19, through Sunday, June 22.

The Rotary Club of Downers Grove hosts the annual summer festival, which features live music and entertainment from some of the area’s best acts, food and beverages, and carnival and midway rides.

The weekend begins at 5:30 p.m. June 19 with a $23 unlimited carnival ride special for children and adults. The entertainment portion of Rotary GroveFest will begin at 5 p.m. June 20 with Jet Black Comedy performing on the Main Stage in the Wenzel Select Properties Entertainment Area. The Jin & Tonic Band, 7th Heaven, Billy Croft & the 5 Alarm, Evolution, and many more bands will fill out the Main Stage entertainment lineup.

taste of Westmont The month of July will begin

with an exciting summer fun schedule, as the Taste of Westmont is set to follow Fourth of July weekend.

Westmont Special Events has hosted the annual Taste of Westmont for 10 years, starting in 2004. The Taste, which runs Thursday, July 10, through Sunday, July 13, in downtown Westmont, started in 1996.

The award-winning, outdoor festival will feature a variety of carnival games and rides, live music, beer and margaritas in the Taste’s beer garden, and food from over a dozen vendors.

“We have a lot of great activities planned for this year, some of the past years’ favorites in our Youth Stage area like our battle of the bands, face painting, karate demos and fortune teller,” said Kristine Turano, WSEC office manager. “But this year, we are also adding a visit from the Northern Illinois Raptor Center that will be bringing live owls and other raptors to the event.”

The event also will feature musical performances from some of the area’s best local bands, including Hillbilly Rockstarz, American English and Ides of March.

Sentinels tie for third place in Class 2A

The last week of the state playoffs was a strange one for Westmont, to say the least.

First, the Sentinels won 2-0 0ver Ottawa Marquette on June 2 in the Class 2A Benedictine University Supersectional without posting a single hit in the game.

That win secured Westmont its first-ever state trophy, but how it got what it got just added to the oddity.

After losing 6-2 to Byron on June 6, the Sentinels were to face Freeburg for third-place.

That game, however, never happened because of rain, forcing the Illinois High School Association to cancel the game and award both teams a share of third.

“It was not the way we wanted to end it, but going into the last day, your goal is to come home with something better than fourth place,” said Westmont coach DJ Cocks.

“They gave us third place, so we will take it, although not really the way you want to get it. It is a weird way to end the season, but there is nothing we could do about it pouring from 2 p.m. until 4 a.m. It was unbelievable.

I have to hand it to the IHSA. At least they got the championship games in because those are more important than the third and fourth place games. They did what they had to and I appreciate them recognizing us.”

The sharing of third-place is not unheard. In 2011, DuQuoin and Prophetstown shared third in Class 2A when the game was rained out after six innings with the score tied at 4-4.

The way the season ended

was especially abrupt for seniors Tommy Franczak, Tim Abbatacola, Michael Geduldig, Greg Pietrzak, Zach Moran, John Kelly, Jack Gordon, Sam Montalbano and Adam Berg, who all went into the state finals expecting two more games in their Sentinel careers.

“Yeah, for the nine seniors we have, we went down there thinking we were going to play two more games, but we didn’t get to two,” Cocks said.“In some way, it’s our fault for not winning the first game and making the second game possible.”

In the opening game, Westmont grabbed an early 2-0 lead when Franczak drove in Moran in the first inning and Kelly scored Moran in the third.

Byron scored three in the third inning and added another three in the sixth.

Moran was 2-for-3 with both runs scored, while Charlie Donovan, Franczak and Berg all had one hit.

“After what has happened these last two weeks, everyone has given so much to get downstate and get a trophy, we are drained,” Cocks said.

“Our top goal was to win a state championship and that didn’t happen, but we have to focus on what we did and that was getting there and giving Westmont something they had never had before and that’s a trophy in baseball.”

To get to state, Westmont won despite getting no-hit by Ottawa’s Evan Snyder in the supersectional.

Snyder and Moran battled with a combined no-hitter into the fifth inning when Marquette got a single.

leadoff. A sacrifice but attempt by freshman catcher Joe Donovan scored Geduldig when the Marquette third baseman threw the ball over first base and down the right field line.

Donovan advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when his brother, Charlie, grounded into a fielder’s choice.

While the Sentinels lose nine seniors, bringing back a player like Charlie Donovan, the No. 1 ranked junior in Illinois by the

Prep Baseball Report, as well as younger brother Joe, Cocks knows he has pieces to work around.

“We have work to do,” Cocks said.“We have players to develop and pieces to put in place from the seniors that are leaving, but we have all summer for that.

And, believe it or not, we start summer baseball (June 9) at Neuqua Valley, so we are right back at it.

“There are not many teams

that can say they have, what I believe, will be the No. 1 player in the senior class next year in the state. And Joe Donovan, you would never believe he is a freshman if you watch him play. Having those two guys to build around is unbelievable and as a coach, I cherish having those two guys on my team. If you have guys like those two to build around, the rest will fall into place and we will be a force to be reckoned with next year.”

Keeping it in the family: Handwork tabbed POY

It is never easy to replace a 39goal scorer.

It is even harder when the player everyone expects to step up is the former player’s younger sister.

For Plainfield North’s Heather Handwork, she was able to duplicate her sister Ashley’s achievements.

Not only did the Tigers repeat as regional champions, Heather was able to hit the 30-goal

plateau as well, finishing the season with exactly 30 goals despite playing much of the season in the midfield.

And, she has concluded her season with the same award her sister won last year, the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“It’s exciting,” Heather said.

“It’s great for the family and is awesome for me to get this award.”

“Heather has been the most dominant player in the area this year, and the best player on the field in each game we

have played,” Plainfield North coach Jane Crowe said. “She has 30 goals, and has played many games in the midfield. She has led our attack, and has been able to score in a variety of ways. She can shoot from distance, beat defenders off the dribble and score in the air off of restarts.”

While there was pressure on Heather, a senior, she was able to handle that well.

“I felt a lot of pressure,” she said. “It was weird not playing with her and took some time to get used to. I felt like I dealt with it well. I really stepped up. I was

happy with scoring 30 goals, I think I scored 18 last year.”

There was also pressure on the team as they were looking for players to fill the scoring void.As a team, they were able to make the appropriate adjustments to clinch a sixth straight undefeated Southwest Prairie Conference season.

“Everyone was nervous coming into the year, but everyone played well and we played a little differently,” Heather said. “We attacked from the outside and up the middle.

Our other captains, Sara Stevens

and Shayna Dheel, stepped up a lot as well.”

Heather improved her game in the summer by playing against older competition, as well as top competition. She played up in age in club season and went to the national camp in California where she competed with the U-18 team.

Now she will be reunited with her sister at Marquette University.

South captures sectional crown

Joe Becht opened the scoring with a two-RBI single in Downers South’s 10-1 sectional final win over Plainfield North.

One of simple key to winning a baseball game at any level is to take advantage of the other team’s mistakes.

That was what Downers Grove South did Saturday, as the Mustangs turned Plainfield North bobbles into runs, posting seven in the third inning en route to a 10-1 win and the Oswego Sectional title.

It was South’s first sectional title since 2005 and the second one in program history.

After a pair of scoreless innings by both teams, the Mustangs broke the game open on the back of four hits and just as many Tiger errors.

Joe Becht had a two-RBI single to get South on the board, while Danny Oriente and Chris Pedrak added RBI. The three combined for seven RBI, while

Matt Zinnecker went 4-for-5 in the game.

“We are having fun. We are not putting too much pressure on ourselves and we are just playing baseball and let the rest happen,” Becht said.“We are a team and we understand the importance of playing team baseball. No one is out here hitting 10 bombs a year.

We just execute and everyone on the team can execute and get a job done.”

Becht said he has enjoyed the Mustangs’ playoff run as much as anything he has done in sports.

“This has been the best time of my life,” he said. “This is what I have been talking about and imagining since I entered high school. I have been playing with these guys my entire life and this is what we have been playing for and this is just a great way to go out.”

Mustangs shut out in sectional final

All year long Downers Grove South had not been shut out in a game.

That changed Saturday at the Oswego East Sectional final, as No. 4 seed Naperville Central took down the No. 2 Mustangs, 4-0.

“We just couldn’t get a lot of good, solid contact,” Downers South coach Ron Havelka said. “We just couldn’t muster anything. It is a tough one to swallow. They area a fine team and this is a very tough sectional.

There were four teams that could only go downstate and only one team can win.”

The Redwings scored two runs in the first, one in the third and one in the fifth for the margin of victory.

“I don’t think we panicked,” Havelka stated. “We were down 2-0 to them earlier in the season and scored six runs in the fifth inning and beat them 6-2. Last year we were down 6-0 in the first inning and came back to

beat them 10-8. I always feel our team can come back. Today it just didn’t happen.”

Meanwhile, Downers South failed to get a runner past second base in the game.

The Mustangs finished the season with a 33-3 record.

“I was real proud of them,” Havelka said. “We had an unbelievable season. We ended up 33-3 and that is one of the best records we’ve had in a long, long time. We’ve had some unbelievable teams, but this team accomplished a lot.”

Downers South advanced to the championship game with a 7-4 win over No. 3 seed Downers North.

The Mustangs scored all seven of their runs in the third inning off of star pitcher Dale Ryndak, who had given up less than seven earned runs all year.

“Simply put, hitting is contagious,” said Downers South’s Jessica Andree, who opened the scoring with two RBI. “We wanted this game so bad. Once we got the one hit, we >> see FINAL | page 15

“Once he got the big lead,he did what he needed to do,” Downers Grove South coach Darren Orel said of Taylor. “Peter hasn’t thrown in a while, sometimes you get in the playoffs and don’t use your bullpen. He had a good year for us and I thought it was important to get him out there.”

The sectional title game was almost a carbon copy of the Mustangs’ win in the sectional opener.

In that game, South made the best of five Waubonsie Valley errors to win 9-2.

“They helped us a little, without a doubt. That kid was tough on the mound,” Orel said.

“But we took advantage and Danny (Spinuzza) was excellent (on the mound).”

Pedrak drove in a pair of unearned runs in the first and added another in the fifth on an Oriente RBI triple before scoring four runs with a ball finding the outfield grass and opening a 7-1 advantage.

Downers North responded with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a three-run homer from Jaclyn Pasakarnis, but it wasn’t enough.

“They have a lot of firepower and have a lot of girls in the lineup who can hit,” Downers North coach Eric Landschoot said. “Any time you can string some hits together, you are going to be in business. We normally don’t see that happen off Dale.

We did bounce back, but we came up a few runs short. I want to give our girls credit for staying up until the last out. They didn’t give up and gave it all they had.”

“We would have liked to close the door better,” Havelka said.

“We will take the win. They scored four runs and got a little thrill out of it. They are a tough team. They are a very good team and have a very good pitcher and we were able to get some runs off her, so that was great.”

“These guys are grinders,” Orel said. “They are ballplayers and they just compete and they have fun doing it. There have been games we have been down and games we have lost and they have that same attitude. It is just really fun when it is going your way.

“This group likes each other and they like to play baseball and that is something that you can’t teach and you can’t coach.

Either they have it or they don’t and this group has it. This group really, really likes each other.

They are not doing this for me or the school, they are doing this for each other.”

The Mustangs played St. Rita in the Crestwood Supersectional on Monday,May 9 after press deadline.

Caroline Hedgcock carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and didn’t allow an earned run in the game.

The win marked the second straight year the Mustangs have knocked out the Trojans in sectional play.

“It is a great feeling,” Daly said.

“We knew what we did last year against Elaine Heflin, who was a great pitcher. We wanted to come out on top this year. We knew that Dale is a great pitcher too. We practiced a lit this week and stayed together as a team.”

Despite the loss, it was a great season for Downers North, which went 28-3 on the year.

“We can’t just focus on this game,” Landschoot said. “It will hurt for a while, but we have to be proud of our season. We were conference champs in a tough conference and regional champs in a tough regional. We went 28-3. That is the part we have to hang on to so we have that mental edge in the offseason.”

“It was a great year,” Ryndak said. “We were expecting to win a lot of games this year. It kind of stinks losing to your crosstown rival, but they are a good team.

They know how to hit the ball land how to hit against me. They are good.”

The sophomore forward filled the void and then some, setting single-season school records for most goals (19) and most points (46).

rachel schneiDer Bolingbrook senior made a huge return this season after suffering a torn ACL last year.

She posted eight goals and nine assists this year and was an AllSectional selection and was All-Conference for the second time. She will play next season at Illinois Wesleyan.

nikia smith Bolingbrook senior made a position change this season and scored 19 goals and had 13 assists in her first year as a striker.

A defender by trait, she was fourtime All-Conference, two years All-Sectional and this season was named to the All-State team.

She will continue her career at Northwestern University.

sara steVens Stevens had 18 goals and seven assists this year for Plainfield North.

News Metra postpones work on Main Street Platform Metra has postpones work on the Main Street Platform and Friday provided a statement on the status of the project.

“Metra’s proposed plans for the construction of the new Downers Grove Main Street station platforms were implemented for construction,” a statement read on the village of Downers Grove website.“During

the demolition of the west halves of the platforms, we identified unforeseen conditions relating to drainage issues and matching existing conditions.

“We enlisted the support of a design consultant who has surveyed the station and is working with Metra to develop a proposal to adequately address these drainage issues while still

meeting ADA requirements.

Metra anticipates receiving an initial proposal today [Friday, June 6] and construction to resume next week.

“We realize our commuters have noticed the lack of activity on the construction site;however, we are taking this opportunity to ensure that the new platforms address the drainage concerns.”

WEST NILE VIRUS Since the first outbreak of West Nile virus in 1999 along the east coast of the United States, news media have provided extensive coverage of other outbreaks.

Mosquitoes, which usually contract the virus by feeding on infected birds, then bite a human and introduce the infection where it multiplies in the bloodstream.

While some infected individuals will remain asymptomatic, most will have just mild symptoms.

These include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches and fatigue. In a very small number of cases, less than 1 percent of infected people will develop more severe symptoms such as meningitis, convulsions, paralysis and mental confusion.

Though there are no medications that can treat the West Nile Virus infection, the symptoms typically resolve in a few

days. As noted, the vast majority of people will have mild symptoms that require supportive care such as ibuprofen for fever and body aches, rest, and fluids.

In more severe cases, patients may be admitted to the hospital for higher levels of support and monitoring.

Take measures to prevent exposure. Mosquitoes prefer to gather and lay their eggs in areas of standing water such as stagnant ponds, birdbaths and flowering pots. Avoid these areas and consider removing them from your yard. Mosquitoes prefer to feed at dawn and in the early evening, so remain indoors during these times. When outdoors, apply insect repellent with DEET as noted in the discussion of Lyme disease. The virus cannot be spread from person to person so infected individuals need not be quarantined.

he arrival of warm weather often signals the end of cough and cold season. However, families must be watchful for infections carried by mosquitoes and ticks, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

In this month’s column, we will discuss the signs and symptoms of these infections, how they are transmitted and strategies to prevent exposure.

LYME DISEASE DOCTOR’S RX

During the coming months families need to be aware of Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Should anyone develop symptoms of either infection, they should contact their primary care physician immediately.

Thousands of cases of Lyme disease have been reported since it was first recognized in 1975. A type of bacteria called a spirochete causes the infection.

It is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks, which are tiny, blackbrown insects about the size of a poppy seed.

Infected deer ticks have been found in many parts of the United States, especially the northeastern states; California; and closer to Chicagoland in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Deer ticks live in forests or grassy, wooded areas and are most active from late spring through early fall. People have been exposed and infected during all types of outdoor activities from camping or hiking in secluded forests to their own backyard.

Lyme disease can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics, and patients will recover fully. If not recognized and treated, the infection can progress to more serious complications such as arthritis, meningitis and paralysis of facial nerves.

Families traveling to, or spending time in areas where deer ticks are prevalent should take note of the following strategies that

have been shown to decrease the chance of exposure.

Whenever possible people should stay on cleared paths and avoid the shaded, moist,

wooded and grassy areas where the ticks prefer to live. Using insect repellent with DEET is also very effective. These products are safe for children when they contain no more than 30 percent DEET, and are washed off with soap and water when returning indoors.

Children and adults should wear enclosed shoes or boots, and keep arms and legs covered. Wearing a hat can protect the scalp.

Wear light colored clothing to make it easier to notice ticks. The most effective way to prevent infection may be doing a complete tick check after returning indoors. Humans are usually infected when the tick has been attached for more than 48 hours, so prompt removal of ticks is critical.

If ticks are found attached to the body, the following steps will aid in removal. Fine tipped tweezers can be used to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Try not to squeeze the body of the tick. Pull back slowly and the tick will usually release. The area should then be cleaned with alcohol and antibacterial ointment.
