Downers Grove Library hires next director Julie Milavec has been hired as the next library director A new director will take over the helm at the Downers Grove Public Library Aug. 1 The library’s board of trustees announced last week that Julie Milavec has been hired as the next library director. She will replace former director Rick Ashton, who retired March 31.

“We are confident that her experience, energy and passion for community engagement will usher in yet another era of excellence and excitement for the library patrons and staff, and for all the residents of Downers Grove,” Board President Wendee Greene said in a statement.

Milavec is currently the director of the Plainfield Public Library District, a position she’s held since 2000. She submitted her resignation from the Plainfield Library on May 9.

“It’s a bittersweet moment,” Milavec said in a statement.

are like family. Keeping up with the demand for service in this community has been challenging.

challenge and said she can’t wait to begin her new role.

Sue O’Brien and Bonnie Reid will continue to serve as interim co-directors of the Downers Grove Library until July 31. Milavec’s last day at the Plainfield Library is July 15.

The Plainfield Library’s board of trustees will discuss a request for proposals for an executive search and plans for an interim library director at its May 18 regular meeting.

The Downers Grove Village Council held a first reading on a series of resolutions that would grant historic landmark designation to three village properties.

The first property, located at 701 Maple Ave., was built in 1895 by William James Herring. According to board documents, the house includes many of the features of a Queen Anne style home. Recent changes to the Downers Grove Historic Preservation Ordinance attempted to make the historic landmark designation process easier by simplifying the application requirements and reducing the regulatory requirements. A home must either be at least 50 years old or be historically significant. Because the home at 701 Maple more than 100 years old and a Queen Anne style, it meets these new requirements for historic landmark designation.

Downers Grove’s original train station, located at 1000 Burlington Ave., was the second property considered at the meeting.

Construction of the station began during the Civil War and was completed in 1864. Its Classical Revival architectural style was inspired by the 1893 World’s ColumbianExpositioninChicago, according to board documents.

Because it has significant historical value to the community and meets the age qualification, the train station would meet the requirements for landmark designation.

The last property discussed at the meeting, located at 1232 Gilbert Ave., is a two-story Folk Victorian style home most likely constructed in 1891. The property meets the requirements by being more than 50 years old and being an “excellent” example of the Folk Victorian style, according to the village. The second and final reading of the resolutions are expected at the May 17 village council meeting.

The Downers Grove Village Council last week held a first reading of a facility sustainability plan that has been an ongoing source of public debate in the village. The plan, which focuses on improvements to the Downers Grove police station and village hall, looks to resolve longstanding issues with the buildings.

“It is time to solve this problem, and move on,” Mayor Martin Tully said at the council’s May 10 meeting.

According to board documents, issues with the police station building include it being undersized, having longterm maintenance needs and operational deficiencies. Staff said village hall also has longterm maintenance needs and operational deficiencies.

Deputy Village Manager Mike Baker said improvements to the police station would include constructing an 11,000- to 13,000-square-foot addition to the south side of the building and renovating the existing space.

As far as improvements to village hall, Baker said minimal necessary maintenance improvements would be performed, and a long-term solution for the building would be decided after the police station improvements were complete.

The estimated cost for renovations to the police station is $14.5 million, while work on village hall would cost $600,000.

Bids for the police station project are expected to go out between June 2016 and August 2017, according to board documents. Construction would start in July 2017 and finish in fall 2018. Funding for the project would come from a 20-year bond issue with a $1.1 million annual debt service payment, as well as $600,000 from a levy formerly for library bond debt

service, $300,000 from the capital fund previously allocated for new sidewalk construction and $200,000 from the gasoline tax formerly for the Fairview Avenue debt service.

Commissioner Bob Barnett said he didn’t think the proposed plan was a good path to take, saying that it didn’t provide a good value to the taxpayers.

“We’re spending a ton of money, with not much to show for it,” he said, adding that he wasn’t trying to diminish the value of what the council is trying to do.

Commissioner David Olsen thanked staff for preparing the plan and said he saw this merely as a first step. “It’s really a first step in addressing our community; making sure that our police have facilities they need to continue to provide the top-notch service that they do,” Olsen said. “It provides a great deal of service to our taxpayers.”

Remaining commissioners said they felt the plan was a good one and offered their support.

The plan could be approved at the May 17 meeting.

Lacey Road Reconstruction The village council also held a first reading of a contract for the reconstruction of Lacey Road to Chicagoland Paving Contractors, Inc. for $549,900.

The reconstruction is covered by $400,000 in the capital projects fund for roadway improvements and $150,000 in the stormwater fund. According to board documents, the project will include the replacement of asphalt pavement, sidewalk repair, installation of new ribbon curb to facilitate drainage, and storm sewer replacements and improvements. The project will take place at Lacey Road, between Ogden Avenue and Virginia Street.

The village has worked with Chicagoland Paving Contractors Inc., before and they have satisfactorily completed several projects for the community. The second read for the contract will be at the May 17 meeting.

General Assembly approves $700 million to human services agencies Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies Bugle Staff The Illinois Senate and House of Representatives approved legislation last week that would provide $700 million in funding to human service agencies throughout the state.

Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies that provide services such as mental health care, drug addiction treatment and home-delivered meals for seniors.

The House passed the bill 1110-3, while the Senate voted 55-0 to pass the measure.

“Just like we did with emergency funding for higher education a few weeks ago, this is another example of Republicans and Democrats working together to identify available revenue to provide a temporary lifeline through the end of this fiscal year,” Rep. Ron Sandack. R-Downers Grove, said in a news release.

Despite being approved by the House and Senate, SB 2038 still awaits Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

He also called the bill an example of bipartisan cooperation, but stressed that there is still work to do.

“Just as with recent funding for higher education, Democrats and Republicans came together,” McGuire said. “But just as with the higher education measure, this human services measure provides less than half of what the General Assembly one year ago authorized the governor to devote to helping people. We must keep working.”

If signed into law, SB 2038 would allocate $248 million to the Department of Human Services, $243.5 million to the Department of Aging, $170.5 million to the Department of Revenue, $18 million to the Department of Public Health,

$9.1 million to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, $5.4 million for Department of Healthcare and Family Services, $1.3 million to the Department of MIlitary Affairs, $458,000 to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and $343,500 to the Department of Transportation.

“I eagerly voted for this measure because the services involved are extremely important and should be taken out of negotiations, as we try to embark upon reforms that will make our government better serviceable to its people,” Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, said the stopgap measure is a step in the right direction to providing programs for seniors, the disabled, the homeless and people being treated for addiction with needed aid.

“But, it doesn’t include all of the state dollars our human service agencies were anticipating and should receive,” she said. “More has got to be done, and I will continue pushing for a complete human services budget.”

As of May 16, the governor had not given the bill his final approval.

Village seeks local artists for historical mural Mural oversight committee will review submissions, coordinate project Bugle Staff The village of Westmont will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021, but village officials aren’t wasting any time promoting the centennial bash.

As part of the build up to that milestone, the village is asking local artists to participate in a mural project that looks to depict Westmont at different points in its history.

“The concept is to do a total of five murals, with a new mural being debuted each year for the next five

years,” said village trustee Bruce Barker, who is coordinating the mural project.

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter said the village created a 100th anniversary committee to help build momentum to the 2021 platinum anniversary through annual community events.

“One of the projects that our group will kick off this year will be a series of murals depicting various eras of Westmont history,” said Gunter, who chairs the anniversary committee.

The committee is asking for local

artists interested in participating in the project to fill out an online sign up form, which asks for contact information, artistic background and work samples.

A mural oversight committee will review submissions and coordinate the entire project.

“The first mural will be unveiled this year on Nov. 10 to celebrate our 95th anniversary,” Barker added.

Artists strengths should be in the areas of illustration and murals. The online form can be found at https:// goo.gl/04bLtQ. The deadline for submissions is June 24.

Westmont plans 2016 community garage sale Each year, the village of Westmont and Westmont Special Events Corporation encourage to hold garage sales during the same weekend in August with the hope that bargain hunters will ascend on the village en masse.

The 2016 communitywide garage sale is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13. Garage sales will be held both days between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and a garage sale permit is not required for this specific event on these dates.

“This is a popular annual event, and we typically have over 100 participants,” Westmont

Brush drop-off program resumes May 14 The village of Woodridge Public Works Department and the Woodridge Park District operate a brush chipping site on 71st Street, west of Woodridge Drive.

The brush drop-off program is held on the second Saturday of the month May through October from 9 a.m. to noon.

Cars dropping off materials will be charged $5 for the first car load and an additional $3 for each return trip made that day. Trucks vans, or trailers will pay $10 for each load dropped off that day.

The village site does not require bundling, has no length requirement and can accept branches up to 5 inches in diameter. Proof of residency is required.

The chips generated by this program will be made available to residents for free pick-up at the mulch pile on Woodridge Drive.

Operation Kidsafe heads to Woodridge May 21-22 Operation Kidsafe International is hosting free child safety events across the U.S. and Canada, and Woodridge is no exception.

The Child Safety Week program event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21 and noon to 4 p.m. May 22 at a local AllState office, located at 7440 Woodward Ave., Suite H. The

The village and the WSEC will publicize the event on the village of Westmont’s website and through various social media accounts.

Preliminary research by the medical profession indicates that the use of alternative nicotine products through vaping may pose health hazards to third persons, including children.

Consequently, the village board voted to mirror the Illinois statute concerning the sale and public use of alternative nicotine products.

The new ordinance went into effect May 2.

When reading Robert Frost’s classic poem “The Road Not Taken,” it’s tempting to see only one simple message in his words. As Frost comes to a fork in his path, he chooses the one that appears less worn, less chosen by others.

Doing so, in his own view, makes all the difference.

Readers tend to see this as an ode to going your own way, which is important.

At the same time, it is equally important that the author is making a choice at all, in large part because he must; the path has forced his hand. From the place where the roads of life diverge, we can all choose the new path we will take.

Making changes is hard. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, there is a typical series of stages that we all encounter on our way to lasting change, beginning with the point where we aren’t thinking about it or we just don’t want to do it, and culminating in a permanent lifestyle alteration. To get to the other side of the change hurdle, remember there’s many ways from here to there.

When others can relate to the struggles we experience, they tend to offer advice that mirrors what they did in a similar situation. Despite their good intentions, our friends and loved ones might be setting up a vicious game called “Why don’t you? / Yeah, but…” that never ends well. This game starts with a seemingly helpful suggestion, such as “Why don’t you start running every day” in response to a person expressing their desire to lose weight. The reply then comes back, “Yeah, but my knees are bad and I don’t have good shoes.” More ideas are piled on in search of the key that will fit the situation. After a few more rounds of this, both people grow frustrated, nothing has

But, all is not lost. We can take a cue from Malcolm Gladwell, an author and cultural observer who looks for unique stories that contain hidden truths about our lives. One of his stories involves Howard Moscowitz – one of the most influential market researchers in the food industry.

Moscowitz was once hired by spaghetti sauce manufacturer Prego to determine the ideal sauce for consumers because they were losing market share to Ragu.

What Moscowitz discovered is that there is no such thing as one perfect sauce – a conclusion identical to what he reported to Pepsi years earlier when asked to identify the perfect level of soda sweetness.

What Prego and Pepsi hoped to discover was the one magical formula that could please everyone. However, the reality was more complicated.

Rather than one sauce to meet the tastes of millions of people, there needs to be many different sauces and even more different flavors of soda.

So how does that help any of us, aside from filling local store shelves with dozens of choices?

What it means is that when we are dealing with turning points, life transitions and other challenges, there are many possible pathways.

of the paths that have worked for others: exercise, nutrition, professional counseling, 12-step meetings, medication, faith groups, journaling and moving to a healthier environment.

Looking to role models for paths to success can be useful. Patterns of thinking and acting that have worked for others might also prove effective for us.

Not always, though, and probably not in the exact same way.

Adaptability is one of the great human traits, so use it to your full advantage.

Rather than focusing on what doesn’t work, such as trying to run if you are the person with bad knees, look at what you can do. And instead of emphasizing the laundry list of obstacles that you can’t change, put your attention on what you can control.

keeP cominG Back Three final points to consider. One, starting with baby steps works best.

Small changes tend to snowball into larger changes. Even a slight shift in our daily routine can produce significant changes in mood and behavior.

Secondly, whereas Robert Frost doubted that he would ever return to the same point in the road, we ourselves often face similar difficulties repeatedly, and that’s OK. If what we tried before didn’t work, we have 19 or more other solutions to try.

Finally, as lonely as the journey might seem at times, we are all in good company. The fears, hopes, dreams and joys of life are universal; shared by all of the travelers on a road together.

MUSTANGS Dixon-Tucker, Hackbarth lead strong DGS contingent to state

The Downers Grove area will be well represented next weekend at the IHSA Class 3A girls track and field state finals in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Both Downers Grove South and North had successful sectional meets, with South showing why it is a contender for a state trophy.

The Mustangs finished second at the Lockport Sectional with 107 points, placing behind Lincoln-Way East, who tallied 132.

South will send eight events to the state meet, led by senior Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker, who advanced to state in four events. It is her fourth trip to EIU. In back-to-back events, Tucker won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.23 seconds and tied for the sectional title in the 100 dash in 12.05 seconds.

“That is extremely tough, I had to rush just to have time to check in,” Tucker said. “I did this indoors with the 55 meter dash and 55 hurdles, but with outside being a longer race, it is more tiring, but I train hard and pace myself so I can continue doing both back to back. It is exciting, It feels so good to qualify.”

Tucker also advanced in the 200 dash, placing third in 25.55 seconds.

She also anchored the 400-meter relay team with Nicole Muccianti, Soren Umali and Ariana Finley that placed second in 48.75 seconds.

Michaela Hackbarth advanced in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 12.19 seconds, giving her the opportunity to defend her state title in the race.

“It is really nice, I like racing against fast competition, it just motivates me more,” she said. “I am trying to improve on every meet and prepare for state. Our team motto for the state series is survive and advance.”

Now that she has advanced, Hacknbarth wants to repeat as champion.

“I want to defend my state title,” she said. “A sub 2:10 would be really nice. Also, our team could do really well, so as many points as I can get is great.”

This year will be different for Hackbarth as she is the one everyone is gunning for.

“I have had to adjust my mindset for that and I think I have done a good job,” she said. “Staying undefeated all year and knowing I can beat anyone in the state has given me confidence. I trust in my training and I don’t really worry about the other girls. If I focus on what I am doing, the times and places will come.”

She also advanced in the 400 dash in 57.90 seconds.

Katie Stapleton placed second in the 3200 run in 11:26.62.

“It was a really fast race out there tonight,” Moreavec said. “Michaela went out hard and I followed her and I think overall, it went well. I really like racing against other fast people.”

Just like Hackbarth wants to defend her title, Moravec wants to better her runner-up spot from a season ago.

“I want to finish better last year,” she said. “Even if I just get a faster time, I’ll be happy.”

CLASS 2A Benet Academy won the Lisle Sectional with 107 points, placing ahead of Glenbard South (83) and Montini (78).

Local gymnasts perform well at state finals

Downers Grove North sophomore Lukas Elisha did not compete for the Trojans gymnastics team a season ago, but shoulder surgery forced him to miss part of his club season.

“I missed a lot of the club season and I wanted some meets, so this was a good opportunity,” Elisha said. “It was fun, to be honest. This is my first year in high school gymnastics and I am used to club meets.

The atmosphere is a lot different. In club, everyone wants to kill everyone because it’s so competitive, but here everyone is so supportive and everyone is cheering for everyone even if they are not on the same team.”

In his first IHSA state final, Elisha finished eighth in the

all-around with a total score of 51.10.

He scored a 9.15 on the floor, a 7.80 on the pommel horse, a 7.85 on the rings, an 8.90 on vault, an 8.6 on parallel bars and an 8.8 on the high bar.

In the individual portion of the meet, Elisha advanced to the finals in the parallel bars and the high bar. and placed third in the high bar with a score of 8.75 and fifth in the parallel bars with an 8.70.

Another Downers Grove gymnast battling back from injury is South senior Evan Baird.

“I broke my hand and had surgery in December and got back in the middle of February and just started picking up the skills that I had last year in April,” Baird said. “I think I did pretty well considering what I came back from. It is my senior year and I didn’t want the obstacle to

get in the way of my last year.”

Baird was happy with the way his day went.

“I was pretty happy with how it went,” he said. “I think high bar and vault were my best today. I have been struggling with high bar after the hand break and I was struggling with completing my routine. This was the first or second one I have hit.”

With his gymnastics career closing, Baird is looking to join Illinois State University’s Gamma Phi Circus - the oldest collegiate circus in the nation.

“I want to take my skill from gymnastics and move it into something else,” Baird said.

South’s other gymnast, Brock Herion, placed 15th in the allaround competition.

He scored a 8.55 on the floor, a 7.55 on the pommel horse, a 8.15 on the rings, an 9.55 on vault, an 8.70 on parallel bars and an 7.20

on the high bar.

“I had a really good day today, these were some of the best routines I have done this year.

I finally landed my dismount,” Baird said. “I just relaxed and had fun and that was the secret. There were meets I

went in tight and nervous and today I just relaxed. It is really awesome representing a school that has such a great legacy of good gymnastics. It is also cool coming out here with a small team and showing people we shouldn’t be brushed aside.”

There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved. That being said, if you don’t have $3,200, offer him whatever you’ve got — $2,000 or the original $2,500 as a settlement.

Make sure he understands that you’re not offering to pay the amount you have on the debt, but that it’s being offered as settlement in full if the debt is cleared.

Summer Nights Classic Car Show returns May 20 Array of classic cars will line streets, musical entertainment also featured The annual Summer Nights Classic Car Show returns to downtown Downers Grove next week for its 24th year.

Beginning May 20, the weekly show will take place from 6-9 p.m. every Friday through Sept. 2, except June 24.

An array of classic cars will line the streets, while hundreds of families enjoy the display at this

free community event.

All classic cars are welcome on Main Street from Maple to Franklin and the weekly “featured cars” will be parked on Curtiss Street.

Featured cars must be pre-1985, and a trophy will be awarded to the “best” featured car each week.

The season kicks off with the featured cars being Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Cadillac.

Tim Curran will provide live entertainment, playing piano hits from the 70s through today. Live entertainment will be at the Main Street Train Station from 7-9 p.m.
