Blues great returns to Westmont prior to HOF induction Eddy Clearwater joins Muddy Waters as village’s 2nd inductee

This week, the Blues Foundation will induct former Westmont resident Eddy Clearwater into the Blues Hall of Fame, making him the second inductee to have once called the Chicago suburb home.

Influenced by blues great Muddy Waters, Clearwater will be one of five legendary performers inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame May 4.

“This feels like a dream,” Clearwater said about his induction.

To celebrate the recognition and his local connection, the village of Westmont held a special event April 27 in honor of Clearwater.

Staff conducted a video interview with Clearwater about his relationship with Muddy Waters and his recollections of performing at venues in and around Westmont.

The soon-to-be hall of famer was also given a tour of Westmont’s Muddy Water Historical Exhibit, located at Westmont Centre, 1 S. Cass Ave. Clearwater ​used to perform at local clubs in the 70s before moving to Westmont in 1980, according to the village. By that time, Clearwater was a staple in the Chicago blues scene, having relocated to the city from Macon, Mississippi, when he was 15 years old.

In 1980, Clearwater’s breakthrough set “The Chief”

was released through Rooster Blues. His practice of wearing a Native American headdress onstage inspired the title of his first American LP. “That’s the one that kind of put things on the map for me, you might say,” Clearwater said in his publicity bio. “We recorded it in one day.”

Born Eddy Harrington, his first manager, Jump Jackson, coined the last name “Clearwater” in homage to Muddy Waters.

During his recent visit to Westmont, Clearwater loaned a variety of items to be included in the village’s Muddy Water’s exhibit.

He was also accompanied by a couple of his band members to perform a few songs.

The May 4 Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Memphis, Tennessee, the night before the 37th Blues Music Awards.

Hospital awarded highest ranking for patient safety Good Sam among 50 Illinois hospitals to earn ‘A’ Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital announced that it has once again earned an “A” grade for patient safety by the nation’s leading experts on hospital safety and quality.

“First and foremost, we are a safe clinical enterprise,” said Dr. Chuck Derus, vice president

of medical management at the hospital. “As proud as we are of being recognized as a leader in patient safety, we’re committed to getting even better. Each of us plays an important role in creating a culture where patient safety is the top priority.”

The Leapfrog Group awarded

Good Samaritan Hospital with its top grade of an “A” for protecting patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

Each hospital received letter grades ranging from A at the top to F at the bottom in regards to 28 evidence-based safety indicators.

Grades were released this week for

2,571 acute-care U.S. hospitals.

Good Samaritan Hospital is among 50 hospitals in Illinois to earn an A grade. In addition, there were 23 B grades, 37 C grades, and five D grades in the state.

The hospital also received an “A” when the group’s last report card was published in 2015.

This year’s Hospital Safety Score analysis concluded an estimated 33,439 lives could be saved each year if all hospitals had the

same performance as those that received an A. “It’s time for every hospital in America to put patient safety at the top of their priority list, because tens of thousands of lives are at stake,” said Leah Binder, president of The Leapfrog Group, which produces the safety score.

Jaycees founder named 2015 Citizen of the Year Annual award ceremony held April 25 Bugle Staff If there’s one thng Westmont resident Chris Svitak is known for, it’s volunteerism.

The former president of the Westmont Lions Club and founder and former president of the Westmont Jaycees was named the 2015 Westmont Citizen of the Year during an April 25 awards dinner.

The annual award is presented to a Westmont resident who has displayed exceptional community service. It was one of many awards presented to village businesses and residents during the 2016Westmont Awards Dinner – an annual event hosted by the Westmont Chamber of Commerce.

“Chris has proven time and again his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get involved,” Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter said at the event. “His father John won the same award several years ago, so it’s evident that volunteerism runs in the family.”

In addition to his involvement with the Lions Club and Jaycees, Svitak is the chairman ofWestmont’s Red, White & Bar-B-Q Festival and an officer for the Westmont

Emergency Management Agency.

During his acceptance speech, Svitak – who also won the Westmont Special Events’ Making Memories Award – credited his wife Kelly for pushing him into volunteerism.

Once he started, he couldn’t stop.

Westmont Junior High School assistant principal Amy Quattrone was also nominated for the Citizen of the Year Award.

A number of additional awards were presented during the annual ceremony, which was held at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center.

“Over 125 Westmont-area residents, business owners and civic leaders attended the Westmont Chamber Community Awards program to demonstrate support for our community,” WCCTB President Al Carson said.

“The Westmont Chamber, along with the village of Westmont, Rotary Club of Westmont and Westmont Special Events Corporation are collectively proud to recognize the individuals and businesses that help contribute to the growth and success of Westmont, in a manner that keeps Westmont a great place to live, work and visit.”

The various initiatives Wright is credited with spearheading include coordinating community events such as the storm stenciling program and community blood drives, raising thousands of dollars in donations for the Westmont Chamber and People’s Resource

Center, and helping to promote village programs and events via social media.

Westmont Fire Department Lt. Josh Turen won the 2015 Public Safety Officer of the Year Award.

Among his accomplishments considered for the award was the rescue of a man from a burning building.

Jon Kostal of Uncle Jon’s Music, 33 N. Cass Ave., was presented the 2015 Dick Busse Business-ofthe-Year Award, which recognizes a chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion and civic responsibility. Uncle Jon’s Music

beat out Neat Kitchen + Bar for the award because of what the chamber described as its “high level of community interaction and support.”

Additionally, Debby Piha, of the College of DuPage, won the 2015 Roger Westman President’s Award; Westmont Junior High School teacher Colleen Walsh won the 2015 Educator of the Year Award; and Valerie and Kerry O’Connor received the Rotary Club of Westmont’s Paul Harris Award.

The chamber also awarded seven Westmont-area businesses with its 2015 Westmont Community Improvement Award, including Action Fabrics, Coco Froyo/ Immediate Care of Westmont, Expression Dance Studio, Hinsdale Dance Academy, Mullane Healy Godley Irish Dance Company, Orangetheory and Woodgrain Neapolitan Pizzeria.

The inaugural Westmont Dining Reader’s Choice Award was also presented to several restaurants voted best in 27 different categories.

Winners included Las Palmas (Best Mexican Restaurant), Uncle Bubs BBQ (Best Catering and Best Fast Casual), DJ’s Sport Bar and Grill (Best Burger and Best Video Gaming), and Brewed Awakening (Best Coffee Shop), among others.

County awards $1.19 million contract for Highland Avenue bridge work Open House scheduled 4-7 p.m. May 10 at 24 Yorktown Convenience Center DuPage County’s division of transportation will host an open house meeting May 10 to inform residents, business owners and other stakeholders of planned construction on the bridges carrying Highland Avenue over Interstate 88 and Butterfield Road.

On April 26, the county awarded a $1.19 million contract for major repairs needed on the bridges, including partial depth deck patching and joint replacements.

The project also includes roadway resurfacing of Highland Avenue from about 750 feet south of 31st Street to the south expansion joint of the south of the I-88 bridge, as well as pedestrian crossing repairs.

A temporary closure of the

Highland Avenue bridge over Butterfield is expected to begin in mid-July and last through August.

The project is scheduled to begin in early June and be finished

by Labor Day, according to the county.

Detour routes will be posted during the road work, and detour maps are available at www.dupageco.org/DOT/Road_ Construction/HighlandAve. The open house will provide further information regarding the scope of the project.

It is scheduled to take place from 4-7 p.m. May 10 at 24 Yorktown Convenience Center in Lombard – located just north of Yorktown Center.

Library to begin director interviews Downers Grove Library’s board of trustees announced that it has identified a group of finalists in the search for the next library director.

More than 30 qualified applicants were identified by Kansas Citybased executive search firm Bradbury Associates, according to a library news release.

“We were excited about the

quality of the candidates who applied,” Board President Wendee Greene said. \“We attribute the degree of their interest to the wonderful staff, the positive reputation of the library, and the overall appeal of the Downers Grove community and its residents.”

The board of trustees will conduct interviews with three

finalists May 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 503 of First Congregational Church,1047 Curtiss St., Downers Grove.

The meeting will include an opportunity for public comment, immediately followed by a closed executive session during which the three candidates will be interviewed.

Woodridge considers special use, rezoning requirement changes TheWoodridge Plan Commission was scheduled to hold a public meeting May 2 to consider text amendments to the village

municipal code.

Specifically, the plan commission is considering text amendments to Title 9, Chapter 15 of the Municipal

Code. Village staff is proposing to expand the public notification requirements from 250 feet to 350 feet for special use requests and proposed rezoning.

The proposed text amendments would also add notification requirements for new site plan proposals being considered by the plan commission. The text amendments require plan commission review and village board approval.

Additionally, the plan commission will consider a request

by HSA Commercial Real Estate, LLC to develop a 152,122-squarefoot office/warehouse building and associated site improvements on Lot 3 in Park 355 Business Park. The request before the plan commission is for final plan and plat for a PUD for Phase 3 of the Park 355 development.

This is the final phase of Park 355 and will be a speculative building, which means that no tenants have been lined up for the building prior to construction. Village board consideration of the project is tentatively scheduled for June 2.

Girl Scouts hold camp open house

The Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is inviting the community to experience the new gathering place at Camp Greene Wood in Woodridge.

The open house – scheduled May 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – aims to showcase the new office space, offer tours of the campgrounds and provide a sneak peek into the interactive learning experience known as Journey World, where participants work with others to create a business and save a city.

Half of the more than 46,000 overdose deaths each year in the U.S. are caused by opioids, according to a new educational video released by the FBI. The film, “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict,” highlights the struggles of several individuals who have used heroin or prescription opioids, while placing their tragic stories within the context of a larger nationwide epidemic. In order to slow the drug’s growth and educate people of its deadly potential; healthcare

and law enforcement agencies have begun several new initiatives.

Now, the village of Westmont is joining the fight. The Westmont Police Department recently teamed up with the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration for a program at Westmont High School that included a screening of “Chasing the Dragon.”

“The goal of this initiative is to get everyone talking about this troublesome situation – teachers, kids, families, parents, law enforcement,” Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said.

“This is a problem that will only get addressed properly if there is proactive education, awareness

In Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, heroin and prescription opioids have created a public health emergency defined primarily by an increasing number of overdose deaths in the past decade. The DuPage County Health Department reported that 43 people died from heroin overdose in 2015, 43 in 2014 and 46 in 2013.

Nationwide, the numbers tell a similar story. Statistics presented in the documentary indicate that heroin overdose deaths have more than doubled since 2010.

On April 13, more than 100 members of the Special Olympics Illinois family flocked to Springfield for the first-ever Special Olympics Illinois Capitol Day. This was a day when we educated and thanked Gov. Bruce Rauner and our legislators for their support of Special Olympics Illinois.

This was a day when we came together to open minds and hearts for those of us with special needs.

We were divided into nine groups consisting of those of us who were Special Olympics athletes, family members, unified partners, Special Olympics staff and members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. One of the top members of leadership that we had the honor to visit was Gov. Bruce Rauner. Our Special Olympics family stood outside two large wooden doors that marked where Gov. Rauner’s office was located.

Near the front, Special Olympics Illinois President and CEO Dave Breen stood with Kristen McInerney, my friend from Willowbrook and fellow SEASPAR teammate. McInerney presented Gov. Rauner with a framed Special Olympics lottery ticket to thank him for the state’s support of Special Olympics.

We thanked our legislators for two pieces of legislation that have created additional funding for Special Olympics Illinois. One piece was the Special Olympics lottery ticket.

Since February 2015, $5.5 million in Special Olympics Lottery tickets have been sold.

This would not have been possible without many dedicated legislators who helped to carry the bill.

Take Sen. Mattie Hunter, for example, who was instrumental in helping to carry the lottery ticket bill to the Senate.

When my group met with Sen. Hunter, we thanked her for all the hard work that she did for this piece of legislation.

We educated Sen. Hunter about how Special Olympics has given us opportunities.

These are opportunities not just on the playing field but opportunities to make friends from across the state, to showcase our leadership such as at Capitol Day, and to advance our employability within the community.

For the first time, Special Olympics Illinois has an Income Tax Check-off on the Illinois Income Tax Schedule G. These funds will help to create more opportunities for all those involved in

Special Olympics throughout Illinois.

Within my group, Woodridge police officer Daniel McIntyre devoted his time at Capitol Day in showing his support of Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run program.

In 2015, the Law Enforcement Torch Run program raised more than $4.1 million in support of Special Olympics.

At the end of a long day in the Capitol building, we had a reception at the Pasfield House Inn. This reception was sponsored by Special Olympics Illinois Board member John Penn’s Midwest Region of Laborers International Union of North America.

It was here at the reception where McIntyre told me about the amazing moment that Jack Klawitter had on the Senate floor. Jack, diagnosed with Down syndrome and one of the youngest Global Messengers, had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Michael Hastings. Jack was invited up to sit in the President of the Illinois Senate’s seat and Jack’s picture appeared on the big screen of the Senate identified as “Mr. President.”

Throughout Capitol Day, everyone involved opened mind and heart to a lesson on how our state’s politics work and the impact of Special Olympics.

Funding compromise reached, but more work needed Dear editor, I joined my Senate colleagues on April 22 in unanimously approving two bipartisan measures to bridge funding both for higher education and for critical human services.

The proposals aren’t ideal solutions, but they represent compromise and include the needed financing for the programs.

It is important to note that this stop-gap funding for higher education and human services resulted

from cooperation and productive conversation between legislators, legislative leaders and the governor.

The measure we unanimously approved contains funding from the Education Assistance Fund: more than $350 million for state universities, more than $74 million for community colleges, more than $169 million for Monetary Award Program grants, and $6 million for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.

This funding will have an immediate impact on the lives of Illinois’ residents.

The Senate also approved a measure that appropriates $600 million from the Education Assistance Fund to higher education and $441 million from the Commitment to Human Services Fund to help pay for critical human

services programs. This proposal is currently pending in the House of Representatives.

During this process, my Senate Republican colleagues and I fought to ensure that any budget bills advanced be fully funded and not provide a false promise like other measures recently advanced by Democratic legislative leaders.

The challenges aren’t over and debate will continue. But these measures demonstrate Illinois lawmakers’ interest in resolving the state’s issues.

I look forward to getting more work done together, especially enacting a responsible full budget.

Westmont, Lisle hope to make deep playoff push, again By marK GreGory SportS reporter

When Lisle and Westmont met in a two-day home and home series a couple weeks ago, the outcomes of the two games mirrored the team’s seasons as the Lions grabbed game one on the road 6-4 and Westmont traveled to Lisle for game two and won 8-3.

“It is always a battle with Westmont, I don’t care what the records are,” said Lisle coach Pete Meyer.

The split in the games matched the up and down season Westmont has been having “We have had our ups and downs,” coach D.J. Cocks said.

“We have beat some good teams and losing to some good teams.

Defensively we are not there and our bats are struggling a bit and we have some growing pains right now, but it is a long season and we have lot of time. It is pretty early, but we are at the point where we have to start figuring it out. The backwards Ks have to stop coming in big situations, we have talked about that. They have to go down fighting.”

The team may have figured it out before game two, thanks to a player’s only meeting after the game-one loss.

“They get tired of hearing me say it all the time,” Cocks said. “Maybe they can talk it out themselves.”

At the forefront of leadership for Westmont is junior catcher Joe

Donovan.

“Joe Donovan has been there consistent for us,” Cocks said. “Joe has been on varsity for three years and has been through everything we have been through and he knows what it takes and knows how to play the game the right way.

It is in the right hands - that’s for sure.

“He is a leader for us and he was a leader for us as a freshman and he has kept it up for us his sophomore and junior year. I can’t say enough about him. He works hard and does everything the right way and he has just been killing the ball this year, we just have to get more guys to get on that page.”

There are a couple more guys Cocks said are performing well.

“Jackson Fischer on the mound has done a nice job and Matt Alisauskis has been bringing it for us and playing the game the right way, which is good, but until we start doing it as a team we are going to continue to lose close ball games,” Cocks said.

Fischer went seven innings for the win, striking out seven, while Alisauskis had an RBI in each game, including two hits in the opener.

Unlike Westmont, Meyer said Lisle does not have the dominant players leading the charge.

“We have been the epitome of team,” he said. “One day it is our second baseman getting it done, then the next game it is the catcher then the right fielder. We have to be

DGN spikers looking to peak at end of season

Non-conference games are meant to give your team added experience and see different players and systems you wouldn’t normally see in conference play.

It is safe to say Downers Grove North won’t see many better players throughout the year than Joliet Catholic senior Blake Reardon, who carried the hosts to a three-set comeback win in a recent match.

In that match not only did the Trojans have to see a strong player, they had to defend JCA’s constant back row attacks when Reardon was in the back row.

“We don’t see a team run the back row the way JCA did, so that was

good for us,” Downers North coach Mark Wasik said. “We practice the back row in practice, but you aren’t going up against a hitter like that.

Our goal was to be a better six or seven then their one or two and that didn’t happen. Our ball control wasn’t as good as it needed to be.”

Downers North’s advantage over JCA and many of teams is the depth of the team and plethora of potential hitters throughout its lineup.

“We can be balanced and we can bring it from all areas,” Wasik said.

“If we can get the first and second ball contact, we will be ok.”

The Trojans have dealt with a stretch of play without their top hitter, but that can be helpful during the middle of the season rather than at the end of it.

“We were missing our No. 1

outside (Bryan Eckmann),” Wasik said. “But this is good for us because anytime you aren’t at full strength, it makes you better as a team because other guys have to step up and that will help you out later. But it is also hard not being at full strength.”

With only one full rotation player back from last year (Dan Kalmer), the regular season, especially the non-conference games, are good to get players the varsity experience they need by the end of the season to be successful.

“We just need to continue to get better and are a relatively young team,” Wasik said. “I want to be peaking by the end of the year. We could be undefeated right now and I don’t think we would be any

Ball control will also be vital if the Trojans want to find success at the end of the season.

“I would like us to be better at ball control and I challenged them at serve-receive to be better because we are a smaller passing team,” Wasik said.

BASEBALL Nick Taviana pitched a no-hitter as Downers North beat Proviso West 11-0. Taviani had 10 strikeouts.

Alan Janowiak, Dalton Baran (3 RBI, triple) and Matt King (double) all had two hits.

•Downers South fell to Addison Trail 4-0 and Morton 11-3.

The Mustangs rebounded with a 5-2 win over Downers North. Danny Oriente had two doubles and Tyler McCulloch had a pair of hits with Mike Hill driving home two RBI. McCulloch went the distance on the mound, allowing two hits and one

earned run.

•Benet fell to Nazareth 9-7 as CJ Birck had two RBI in defeat.

The Redwings also fell to the Roadrunners 10-6 despite two doubles from Danny Sobolewski to go with five RBI and a pair of hits each from Alex Tassos and Bobby Ernsting.

•Lisle caught fire in a 20-5 win over Plano. Christian Grego had four hits with a home run and three RBI and David White had there hits with a double and there RBI. Alec Van Volkenburg (3 RBI, double), Trevor Stitt and Alex Rodriguez (2 RBI) had two hits each.

The Lions added an 11-1 win over Plano behind Zach Heidenry, who struck out six and allowed two hits and one unearned run in five innings. Drew English had three hits with a double, while Stitt, Mark McGrath and Max Sokolowski (2 doubles, 3 RBI) all had two hits.

As long as the Lions continue to have one or more players performing well each game, Meyer knows the team concept can carry Lisle deep into the playoffs.

“We have to pick each other up.

One pitch at a time, one out at a time, one game at a time – all the things you hear all the time, but they are so true,” he said. “Over

the course of a season, it is the team that is mentally tougher that is going to win games. This game is so filled with failure and it is if you can handle the failure. We are trying to figure that out right now, but I wouldn’t even say we are close to having it figured out.

We are focusing on doing the little things better and we have a long way to go.”

Both coaches know what it takes for a successful run through the postseason, as Lisle won the Class 2A state title in 2013 and Westmont shared third place a year later after the game was cancelled due to weather.

“We talked after a game last week about grit and creating some grit,” Meyer said. “We have quite a bit on this team and we just have to grind

these games out. Good teams can do that and we are just trying to establish that right now.”

Like Meyer, Cocks believes Westmont can be a team to make noise in the playoffs.

“We understand we have to get going and peak at the right time and hopefully we can do it because we have the talent to do it and the arms to do it,” he said.

“Please pay close attention to this horrific epidemic. Help reverse it. Save a life. Save a friend. Save a loved one.”

Additionally, the film suggests that the drug’s stigma as problem limited to poor or urban communities is outdated.

FBI Director James Comey said the heroin and opioid epidemic

does not discriminate.

“All across this country, it is taking good people from good homes and leading them down a trail that often ends in pain and sadness,” he said.

Among the numerous tragic personal stories included in the 49 minute film is that of Trish, whose daughter Cierra started using heroin when she was 16 years old. After being convicted of a felony at the age of 18 and eventually completing treatment, Cierra appeared to be on the way to beating her addiction.

“She was seven months clean— eating healthy, getting her rest, no drugs,” Trish says in the film. “My son, my nephew, my mother, and

I went to get her, and she came out and just, she was healthy.

Everything was great.”

However, that all changed one evening when Cierra suddenly lost her battle with heroin addiction.

Trish recalls the evening, saying she called her daughter down for dinner but did not receive a response.

“So I go upstairs, and I’m knocking, and knocking, and knocking on the door and there is no answer,” she said. “I open that door, and my little girl is on the floor dead.”

The story is one of the many tragic lessons included in Chasing the Dragon.

“This film may be difficult to

watch, but we hope it educates our students and young adults about the tragic consequences that come with abusing these drugs and that it will cause people to think twice before becoming its next victim,” Comey said.
